Suy Niệm Tin Mừng Thứ Hai Tuần 22 Thường Niên - Luke 4:16-30 -

Khi Chúa Giêsu trở về quê nhà Nazareth, Ngài công bố một thông điệp hy vọng dành cho những người nghèo khổ, đói khát, đang bị bỏ rơi và những người đau khổ. Đức Giêsu đã cho chúg ta thấy phúc lành của Thiên Chúa không phải chỉ dành riêng cho người Do Thái, nhưng còn ban cho những người không phải Do Thái nữa. Những người cùng quê cùng làng với Đức Giêsu không thích những lời tuyên bố này và ho đã trở thành những người thù nghịch với Ngài.

Mỗi ngày, chúng ta nghe Tin Mừng, chúng ta phải có thể nói như Đức Trinh Nữ Maria: «xin Chúa cứ làm cho tôi như lời sứ thần truyền". (Lc 1:38); và Thiên Chúa sẽ trả lời: «"Hôm nay đã ứng nghiệm lời Kinh Thánh quý vị vừa nghe" . Tuy thế, để cho Lời Chúa có hiệu quả trong cuộc sống của chúng ta, chúng ta phải loại bỏ tất cả những định kiến, những sự ghen tương, thù hận trong lòng ​​của chúng ta. Những người đương thời của Chúa Giêsu không hiểu được ý nghĩa lời của Chúa, bởi vì họ đã nhìn Ngài với đôi mắt với lòng ghen tỵ của con người «anh này là ai, chẳng phải anh là con bác thợ mộc Giuse thấp kém ?» (Lc 4:22). REFLECTION 2019

Jesus' words have never been meant to be taken lightly and today's Gospel reading makes this abundantly clear. When at the synagogue in his hometown Nazareth, he quotes from Isaiah to declare his mission and work, his own towns-people could not believe him, "Who is this but Joseph's son?"

The people of Nazareth got more indignant when Jesus showed them they were acting as their ancestors did, "No prophet is honored in his own country." Jesus reminded them of God's actions for other people when the Prophet Elijah fed the widow and her son in Sidon, beyond Israel, and when the Prophet Elisha healed the Syrian Naaman of his leprosy.

The mission of Jesus continues as the mission of the Church. Each member of the Church is tasked to help out in some way, "to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and new sight to the blind; to free the oppressed and announce the Lord's year of mercy."

Những người tin vào Đức Kitô có niềm hy vọng. Đấy là thông điệp của Thánh Phaolô gởi cho những người Thessalonica. Vâng, Đức Giêsu sẽ đến lần thứ hai. Điều này là đáng khích lệ, bởi vì khi Ngài đến, Ngài sẽ hiệp nhất chúng ta với chính Ngài mãi mãi. Cuộc sống của chúng ta đôi khi có thể có rất nhiều đau khổ, Chúng ta không thể phủ nhận được điều này. Nhưng Chúa Giêsu mời gọi chúng ta nên kiên trì và bền đỗ trong sự kiên nhẫn bởi vì có cái một gì đó lớn hơn đang đợi chờ chứng ta ở phía trước. Những gì thật tốt đẹp nhất cho chúng ta nhưng chưa đến. Chúa Giêsu mong muốn rằng chân lý này sẽ ảnh hưởng đến cách chúng ta sống hôm nay.

Memorial of the Passion of Saint John the Baptist

Opening Prayer: Lord Jesus, as I reflect on your words today, penetrate my heart with your love so that I can put aside all loves that don’t lead to you.

Encountering Christ:

1.      Herod Was Greatly Puzzled: These simple words of Scripture indicate the need for discernment. What flustered Herod? Something resonated within him that did not sit well. John’s words provoked those sentiments or affective movements. Inwardly Herod found himself at a crossroad between attraction and resistance. John, the prophet of God, spoke to the core existential inclination of Herod’s heart. He, too, was called by God to a life of holiness and goodness, participation in life itself. And yet, the consequences of his chosen path grated his moral nerve. Herod was troubled because he did not think it possible or desirable to make the break from sin and follow that barely kindled joy that resonated when truth and life are revealed.

2.      Herodias: Herodias saw John as an obstacle to her anticipated achievements. Like the enemy of our soul, she stopped at nothing to thwart the movement of Herod’s heart towards God’s truth and life. She was vigilant, always looking for opportunities to present themselves to further her ambition. Even her own daughter played into Herodias’s hands. By her daughter’s dance, Herodias exploited what was natural to Herod, his desire to please and his pride, to remove John’s influence from their lives. 

3.      John the Baptist: John was an anomaly among the people of his time. While seen as crazy by some and a thorn in the side to others, he attracted those who were sincerely seeking a path of truth and righteousness. Imprisonment did not stop him from speaking the truth about the situations at hand. And in the end, it cost him his head, literally. He was beheaded, and his head was brought in on a platter. It is a gross display of irreverence for a man who spoke of the things of God. Despite this, his message still resonates today with those who will open their ears to listen without resistance. John continues reminding us to prepare a way for the Lord. Our task is to recognize any interior resistance and reject it to grow in the grace of God.

Conversing with Christ: Lord Jesus, grant me true discernment to detect the interior movements that come from my original call to holiness and love. Grant that I may be vigilant and name and resist anything that stands in the way of true surrender to you. 

Resolution: Lord, today, by your grace, I will listen interiorly for any resistance I feel toward living greater faith, hope, and charity.
