Trong bài Tin Mừng hôm nay nhắc chúng ta về câu chuyện Chúa Giêsu đi trên mặt nước. Trong Kinh Thánh, Nước là một biểu tượng của sự nguy hiểm. Ngay từ đầu, Thánh thần Thiên Chúa bay lơ lửng trên mặt nước. Điều này báo hiệu cho sự thống trị của Thiên Chúa trên tất cả các quyền năng và những sự rối loạn.

Trong cả bốn Tin Mừng đều nhắc đến câu chuyện về Chúa Giêsu làm chủ trên những con sóng bão. Chiếc thuyền với Phêrô và các môn đệ khác là gợi mở cho chúng ta thấy đó Giáo Hội Công Giáo của chúng ta. Giáo Hội này đã trải qua các vùng nước như sông hồ biển cả... và Giáo Hội đã đi qua thời gian. Giáo Hội cũng đã từng trải những sóng to bão lớn, những hỗn loạn, tham nhũng, ngu xuẩn, nguy hiểm, bắt bố, tù đầy và việc chết vì Đạo chắc chắn sẽ xảy ra.

Reflection Tuesday 18th Ordinary Time 2018

In Gospel today is the story of Jesus walking on the water. Water is, throughout the Scriptures, a symbol of danger. At the very beginning, the spirit of the Lord hovered over the surface of the waters. This signals God’s lordship over all of the powers of disorder

In all four Gospels there is a version of this story of Jesus mastering the waves. The boat, with Peter and the other disciples, is evocative of the Church. It moves through the waters, as the Church will move through time. Storms—chaos, corruption, stupidity, danger, persecution—will inevitably arise.

Now during the fourth watch of the night, which is to say the darkest time of the night, Jesus comes walking on the sea. This is meant to be an affirmation of his divinity: just as the spirit of God hovered over the waters at the beginning, so Jesus hovers over them now. So he says to his terrified disciples: “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” But even more than that: you can participate in my power. “Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.” This is the story of all the saints.

Tuesday 18th Ordinary Time

Opening Prayer: Lord Jesus, grant me spiritual eyes and ears to discern the difference between your presence and chaos. May I choose to walk toward you rather than toward the chaos that seems to surround me.

Encountering Christ:

1. Contrary Currents: Place yourself in this Gospel scene with Peter. Two contrary currents are present: the sea of chaos versus the steady figure of the Lord with hand outstretched. Where will you fix your gaze? The sea of chaos is present in our interior and exterior, crashing against us and creating a sensation of instability, drowning, fear, agitation, confusion, and mistrust in our next step. The media, family situations, culture wars, political divides, work challenges, Church conflicts, money problems, disharmonic relationships—all a sea of chaos in the world in which we are called to steady the rocking boat. To whom do we look for peace and stability, trust and redemption in the midst of the turmoil?

2. Courage: Jesus spoke into the chaos: “Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid!” His words were commanding, consoling, and inviting. No situation is too chaotic to drown out the Gospel. These words resonated amid a Galilean squall and echoed through the confusion of a first-century martyrdom to the present-day turmoil of twentieth-century chaos. We need the grace to recognize the Lord’s commanding and consoling voice in the depth of our interior. We sit with this appeal from the Lord: Courage, be not afraid! Our Lord invites us to take a step toward him with an act of trust. Let us recall past moments in our life where the Lord proved himself faithful and trustworthy. Let’s look to salvation history. He promised that “You will be my people and I shall be your God” (Jeremiah 30:22). Let’s bank our act of trust on the proof of his fidelity. God has sent his Son into the chaos to redeem us.

3. Profession: The disciples taught us the way. They recognized the Lord and proclaimed their newfound discovery. “Truly you are the Son of God!” No amount of chaos or apparent limit to one’s faith impedes the most free and profound act of the human person: adoration and worship of the Lord. In situations that create turmoil, anguish, upset, or instability, we step out of the boat towards the Lord in faith. We hear his voice. We prostrate before him and profess our faith, “Truly you are the Son of God!” In this profession, we discover our identity as a beloved son or daughter in the Son whom he has come to rescue from the depths of Sheol.

Conversing with Christ: Lord Jesus, you have the word of everlasting life. Help me hear your commanding, consoling, and inviting words to me personally. You call me to stake a claim on my identity as a beloved child of God. No one can take that from me. Help me distinguish between the world's voices and your voice, and hold firm to the steady hand that you offer.

Resolution: Lord, today, by your grace, I will pay attention to the contrary voices, identify them and turn to you for my next step.

Qua bài đọc thứ nhất hôm nay, chúng ta thấy ông Môisen đã bị những người gần gũi nhất với ông phản đối chống lại ông, đó là, Aaron và Miriam. Họ đã kể ra hai cái tội của ông Môisen và thách thức ông. Thứ nhất, ông đã kết hôn với một người ngoài không phải là dân Do Thái, và thứ hai, ông là người độc tài và là người duy nhất phát ngôn viên của Thiên Chúa Yavê. Về phần mình, ông Môisen đã không phản ứng gì đến những lời khiếu nại cáo buộc của họ. Thay vào đó, ông chỉ biết đáp lời những lời của Thiên Chúa Yavê một cách trực tiếp.

The passage from the Book of Numbers describes how Moses is opposed by those closest to him, that is, Aaron and Miriam. They challenge him on two accounts. Firstly, that he married a foreigner, and secondly, that he is the sole spokesperson for Yahweh. Moses, for his part, does not respond to the complaints. Instead, the response comes directly from Yahweh.

Yahweh’s response takes the form of an instruction and a punishment. Yahweh informs Aaron and Miriam, that more than all other prophets to whom Yahweh speaks in ‘dreams’ and ‘visions’, Yahweh has a personal and intimate relationship with Moses. With Moses, Yahweh speaks ‘face-to-face’. Then, Yahweh punishes Miriam with leprosy. However, upon hearing the plea of Aaron, Moses intercedes for Miriam’s well-being. Through his actions, Moses demonstrates the qualities of an honorable leader, that is, one who does not react in the face of opposition, and is willing to intercede for those who oppose him.

These days, qualities of humility and forgiveness are a rarity among many leaders, even in the Church. Like Aaron and Miriam, they want to be given due recognition and positions of honour. In addition, they are quick to reprimand or punish those who have done them wrong or who oppose them. It reminds us that Christian leadership is not based on power, pride or position but on one’s total trust in, and dependence on God. Lord, help me trust You completely.

Reflection:

Faith is a free gift from God and is beyond our logical understanding and human control. And this is why pray for the gift of faith even as small as a mustard seed. This takes grace from above and we must continually strive to beg for this grace. We cannot expect our faith to grow through our human efforts and constraints.

As much as faith is a gift from God, fear is a human trait. It is in our daily experiences that we have fears to face. It is perhaps this reason why we bend our knees to seek for God's assuring presence in our world. .

In today's Gospel reading, we hear Jesus asking us to have complete trust in him, as he chastises Peter as he began to sink while walking on the water, "Man of little faith, why did you doubt?" (Mt14: 31)

Indeed why did Peter doubt when our Lord was so close by? Now is the time for us to believe and the trust that our Lord is always close by our side.

Let us pray for faith in Christ to help us live on confidently amidst many uncertainties in our lives. And when we feel overwhelmed, at that very instant, he will take us and pull us to safety. Lord, please help us to always have faith. Finally, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.
