 Suy Niệm Lễ Kính Thánh Phêrô và Phaolô Tông Đồ Ngày 29-6

Lời nguyện:

Lạy Chúa Giêsu, Chúa đã kêu gọi các tông đồ của Ngài lãnh đạo Hội thánh mới của Ngài, và đặt Thánh Phêrô đứng đầu và Thánh Phaolô làm tông đồ cho dân ngoại. Trong sự kết hợp với Vị Đại Diện của Chúa Kitô trên đất, và các giám mục đang hiệp thông với Ngài với tư cách là những người kế vị các tông đồ, hãy giúp chúng con cũng nhận ra lời mời gọi trong ơn gọi của chúng con để phục vụ Chúa như một nhân chứng để thu hút mọi người xung quanh của chúng con nhận thức về Chúa là Chúa cứu thế của họ và Chúa là Đường, Sự thật và là Sự sống.

Gặp gỡ Chúa Kitô:

• Qua Tin Mừng hôm nay, chúng ta phải trả lời thế nào cho câu hỏi của Chúa Giêsu: "Người ta nói Con Người là ai?" Trong nền văn hóa hiện tại của chúng ta, cách mà những người Kitô giáo chúng ta trả lời câu hỏi này quan trọng hơn bao giờ hết. Sự bối rối nghi ngờ bao quanh nhân cách con người của Đức Kitô, đặc biệt là giữa những người trẻ hôm nay. “Việc xác minh giáo lý của Giáo hội Công giáo không dễ dàng và thoải mái với hầu hết những người trưởng thành có tên tuổi trong xã hội ngày nay, những người có xu hướng nghi ngờ những gì họ coi là quan điểm hẹp và cứng nhắc.” Nếu chúng ta không thể làm chứng đầy đủ về việc Đấng Cứu thế là ai, thì làm thế nào thế giới mới đi đến được với ân sủng cứu rỗi mà chỉ Đấng Cứu thế ban cho? Chúng ta hãy cầu nguyện xin Chúa giúp gia tăng đức tin của chúng ta để câu trả lời của chúng ta cho thế hệ trẻ trung ngày nay có thể được xác thực và thuyết phục: là "Chúa Giêsu Kitô là Đấng Cứu Thế, là Con của Thiên Chúa Cha hằng sống trên Trời."

"Con là Phêrô, và trên tảng đá này, ta sẽ xây Giáo Hội của ta." Ngài chọn chúng ta để đảm nhận một vai trò quan trọng và không thể lặp lại trong việc thành lập vương quốc của Ngài Trên Trời. Ngài đã cho chúng ta sự hướng dẫn mà chúng tôi cần và Ngài chỉ muốn chúng ta trung thành với Gíao Hội của Ngài va và Vị Đại diện của Giáo Hội.

Nhưng nhờ vào thánh ý của Chúa, chúng con được Chúa Thánh thần soi sáng hướng dẫn và ban cho những ân sủng riêng của Chúa Thánh Linh. Xin giúp chúng con trở thành những người con trung thành của Giáo Hội và làm chứng nhân cho Chúa Kitô bằng lòng trung thành của chúng con trong kế hoạch cứu rỗi của Chúa trong mọi trường hợp và bất kể giá nào. Lạy Chúa, hôm nay nhờ ân sủng của Chúa ban, con cầu xin Chúa cách riêng cho Đức giáo hoàng và các ý nghĩ riêng của ngài.

 

Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles 2022

Opening Prayer:

Lord Jesus, you called your apostles to lead the new church, placing St. Peter at the head and St. Paul as the apostle to the gentiles. In union with your Vicar of Christ on earth and the bishops who are in communion with him as successors of the apostles, help me to also realize my call to serve you as a witness so as to draw men and women to the knowledge of you: the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Encountering Christ:

· Our Answer: “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” In light of our current culture, the way Christians answer this question is more vital than ever. Confusion surrounds the person of Christ, especially among young adults. “The verities of Catholic Church teachings sit uncomfortably with most emerging adults today, who tend to be suspicious of what they view as narrow and rigid viewpoints.” If we can’t give adequate witness to who Christ is, how will the world come to the saving grace that only Christ offers? Let us pray for an increase in faith so that our answer to today’s youth can be authentic and convincing: "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."

· The Rock of Our Church: “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church.” Part of God’s plan for us is to become a member of his family, the Church, and to have a Vicar, St. Peter and his successors, to lead us until Christ comes again in all his glory. St. Peter professed his faith in Christ as the Messiah and Jesus, in response, chose him to lead the Church. Christ never leaves us alone. He chooses us to take an important and unrepeatable role in establishing his kingdom. He has given us the guidance we need and only asks us to be faithful to his Bride and her Vicar.

· Gates of Hell: “And the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” Certainly, in times of dissent and scandal, it can be challenging to believe that hell is not prevailing against the church, but we can always trust in God’s promise. And in times like this, we must realize that we are chosen by Christ to bear witness despite opposition and skepticism. We know that the Holy Spirit leads us through his Vicar, the pope, through our local church community, and through God’s personal inspirations in our life. We can call upon the Holy Spirit, especially when we feel a bit disillusioned or confused, to keep us steadfast in the truth of the Gospel.

Conversing with Christ: Lord, you entrusted the Church, your Bride, to flawed humans like me. But through your will, I am endowed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Help me to be a faithful son or daughter of the Church and bear witness by my fidelity to your plan of salvation, no matter the cost.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will pray in a special way for the pope and his intentions.

 

Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles

Opening Prayer: Lord, help me to open my heart to understand more deeply who you are as I spend this time in prayer.

Encountering Christ:

1.      Spiritual Rock Stars: Sts. Peter and Paul are arguably the most important and influential men in the Church and the world, one our first pope, and the other an apostle to the Gentiles. What made them great was not their talent, personalities, or intelligence. They were leaders and saints because they cooperated with the Holy Spirit to do the will of the Lord. This passage gives us an early example of Peter's sensitivity to the Spirit. He declared Jesus was the son of God, and Jesus called him “Blessed,” adding, “Flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.” We need not have a superior intelligence or a winning personality to become a saint. We will be holy to the degree we cooperate with the Holy Spirit in fulfilling God’s will for our lives.

2.      Our Story of Conversion: In these verses, we are introduced to Peter, the Rock. No longer Simon, Peter is now the foundation of the new Church and the keeper of the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. We can imagine Peter’s awe at having had such a powerful experience of the Spirit, his surprise at the words of Jesus’ anointing, and perhaps a bit of trepidation at the responsibility to bind and loose, if he even understood it at that moment. Peter’s whole ministry was ahead of him and he likely felt zealous and empowered. We can presume so, because a few verses later Peter was rebuked by Jesus when he boldly objected to the prediction of Jesus’ Passion (Matthew 16:22-23). In today’s second reading we heard Paul speaking toward the end of his ministry about being “poured out like a libation” (2 Timothy 4:6). Paul was looking back over his life’s work, affirming that “the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the proclamation might be completed and all the Gentiles might hear it” (2 Timothy 4:17). Their story of their journey from obscurity to sainthood is our story too. Like Peter and Paul, we one day awoke to the spirit-filled realization that we are personally, unconditionally loved by God. Over time, we exchanged our initial zealousness for a faithful determination to accomplish our unique unrepeatable mision. We are strengthened by prayer, the sacraments, and our community of believers, until one day we say, like St. Paul, “I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith.” As we work day after day in the Church’s field hospital (Pope Francis, Feb. 5, 2015), may we draw consolation from these words of St. Paul: “From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance (2 Timothy 4: 6-8).

3.      The Papacy: Jesus gave Peter the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven and the power to bind and loose. With these few words, Jesus revealed much about the future Roman Catholic Church. According to the Catechism 553, “The ‘power of the keys’ designates authority to govern the house of God, which is the Church. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, confirmed this mandate after his Resurrection: ‘Feed my sheep.’ The power to ‘bind and loose’ connotes the authority to absolve sins, to pronounce doctrinal judgments, and to make disciplinary decisions in the Church. Jesus entrusted this authority to the Church through the ministry of the Apostles and in particular through the ministry of Peter, the only one to whom he specifically entrusted the keys of the Kingdom.” Since these words were spoken by Jesus, there has been an unbroken succession of popes leading our Church. We pray for our Holy Father at every Mass and, out of love for the Church, we also include his intentions in our personal prayer.

Conversing with Christ: Lord, you founded the Church on Peter the Rock and named Paul Apostle to the Gentiles. They had illustrious roles in your divine plan for the Church. Help me to appreciate my role in the Church as well. You have called me to the faith and placed me in my parish, my community, and my family as a member of the Church, for which you are the living head. By your grace, may I spread the Kingdom and be a fruitful member of the Church.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will offer an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be for the Holy Father. 

 

Suy Niệm Tin Mừng thứ Tư, tuần 13 Thường Niên

Bài Tin Mừng hôm nay cho chúng ta biết là ma quỷ hiện hữu và chúng luôn tìm cách xâm nhập vào tâm hồn và ngay cả thân xác của chúng ta để hãm hãi chúng ta. Ma quỷ luôn cố gắng tìm cách để tách biệt chúng ta ra khỏi Thiên Chúa bằng cách cám dỗ và làm cho chúng ta mù quáng không nhìn nhận thấy sự thật, và ngăn cản chúng ta làm những gì đẹp lòng Thiên Chúa.

            Làm thế nào ma quỷ hay nhhững sự gian ác có thể thành công trong việc đạt được mục tiêu của chúng? Ma quỷ sẽ tìm cách và làm bất cứ điều gì khiến mọi người chúng ta phải tách rời xa Thiên Chúa, ví dụ như cách chúng làm cho chúng ta tin rằng chúng ta là bậc thầy của chính mình, bằng cách tập trung và đạt sự chú tâm của chúng ta vào các giá trị bên ngoài.

            Một khi chúng ta sống trong đường lối của tình yêu, chân lý và sự thật, nhưng rồi chúng ta lại để cho bóng tối, hoang vu, tham vọng và những lời nói dối len lỏi vào trong tâm hồn của chúng ta và chúng sẽ nắm lấy cơ hội đễ chia rẽ chúng ta và Thiên Chúa. Tuy nhiên, chúng ta không thể tuyệt vọng ngay cả những khi chúng ta đang ở trong một tình huống như vậy, bởi vì Thiên Chúa sẽ ban cho chúng ta những ân sủng và cứu chúng ta như Chúa Giêsu đã giải thoát người bị quỷ ám như trong bài Tin Mừng hôm nay. Điều duy nhất là chúng ta cần phải làm là đặt niềm tin của chúng ta trong Chúa và trong tình yêu vô biên của Ngài, hãy tin tưởng và chắc chắn rằng Ngài sẽ không bao giờ bỏ rơi chúng ta. Lạy Chúa, xin giải thoát chúng con thoát khỏi mọi sự dữ của những điều gian ác, và sự cám dỗ của ma quỷ.

 

Wednesday13th Week in Ordinary Time

Due to the rapid and advanced development of science today, people hardly believe that the evil spirit is still around us trying to mislead us or influence our daily decisions and lives. Nonetheless, why does the Bible, which is called the book of love and truth, bother to tell us about the evil spirit? Because the evil spirit is trying to separate us from God, blind us from seeing the truth, stop us from doing what pleases God.

            How could evil succeed in achieving its goal? It would do anything that leads people away from God, for example by making one believe that he is the master of oneself, by directing one’s attention and focus on external values.

            Once we are away from love and truth, then darkness, desolation, and lies will take hold of us. However, we are not hopeless even if we are in such a situation, because God will empower us with grace and rescue us as Jesus liberated the man in today's gospel. The only thing we need to do is to put our trust in him and his infinite love, confident that he will never abandon us.

Lord, liberate us from the siege of evil.

 

Reflection:
In the first reading, Amos invited us to shun evil. Sometimes the more something is prohibited, the more we feel challenged to indulge in it. The commandments of the Lord was not meant to make our life more miserable or to be a "killjoy." The Torah contained guidelines for us to live. To seek the good is to make us live in the peace of the Lord. We should not even consider to be in the company of demons, or in moments of discouragement, give up and seek the evil paths. The evil ways will lead to our ultimate ruin and today's Gospel reading  confirms that the demons will perish with the herd of pigs, charging and  drowning themselves in the lake. There can be no future, if we desire to keep and harbor evil in our hearts. We should hate wickedness and love virtue so we may be found pleasing in the eyes of God.
