 Suy niệm Tin Mừng Chúa Nhật thứ Tư Mùa Thường Niên

Qua bài Tin mừng, chúng ta hãy tưởng tượng người bị quỷ ám sẽ cảm thấy như thế nào sau sự việc được Chúa Giêsu cứu chữa? Có lẽ anh ta đã bị dày vò và đau khổ bởi những việc làm xúi dục và bị điều khiển bởi ma quỷ trong nhiều năm. Cuộc sống của anh là một chuỗi thời gian nhất thời tạm lắng đọng giữa những cuộc tấn công dữ dội và liên tục của ma quỷ. Anh ta khó có thể cảm thấy nhẹ nhõm hơn trong cuộc sống gia đình hay trong tình bạn, bởi vì họ cũng không thể bảo vệ được anh. Anh không có cách nào có thể tiếp tục với cuộc sống bình thường, và có được sự yên bình. Ở một mức độ to lớn hơn, anh đã mất đi món quà quý giá nhất của mình đó là sự tự do. Niềm hy vọng duy nhất của anh khi phải đối mặt với một địa ngục trần gian như vậy là sự can thiệp trực tiếp của Thiên Chúa, một phép lạ nhiệm màu.
Trong một khía cạnh nào đó, mỗi chúng ta đều có thể liên tưởng đến tình huống tưng tự. Chúng ta không bị quỷ ám, nhưng tất cả chúng ta đều có những sự đau khổ và cám dỗ, thường được che giấu trong chúng ta như có một sức mạnh bí ẩn vô hình đang hành hạ chúng ta, giống như ma quỷ đã có quyền lực trên người bị quỷ ám trong Tin Mừng hôm nay cho đến khi Chúa Giê-su xuất hiện.
Có thể khi người bị quỷ ám này đang nghe Chúa Giêsu giảng dậy trong hội đường, anh ta cảm thấy sự kích động của ma quỷ. Có lẽ anh ta đã cảm nhận được rằng con quỷ trong người anh đang cảm thấy bị đe dọa. Có thể anh ta đang tiến lại gần Chúa hơn, được lôi kéo bởi một niềm hy vọng bí ẩn, hay trong tiềm thức. Đột nhiên con quỷ sử dụng sức mạnh thông thường của nó, chiếm lấy thân xác và giác quan con người của anh này để tấn công Đấng Cứu Thế. Chỉ bằng một lời nói, Chúa Giêsu làm ma quỷ thinh lặng và xuất ra khỏi anh ta.
Người bị quỷ ám bị ném xuống đất trong cơn thịnh nộ, tức tối của ma quỷ, và cuối cùng ma quỷ đã bị trục xuất và chạy xa. Sự thanh bình đã trở lái cho người đã bị quỷ ám... . Anh ta có dám tin không? Anh ta mở mắt ra và biết rằng giờ đây anh đã trở lại với chính mình, cuối cùng anh đã được giải thoát khỏi những dằn vặt khôn nguôi của ma quỷ trong con người của anh. Đôi mắt của anh ta gặp Đấng Cứu Thế; lòng biết ơn nào có thể khoả lấp trái tim của anh khi anh nhìn thấy tình yêu và sự vui mừng tỏa sáng từ khuôn mặt của Đấng Cứu Rỗi anh!
Chúa Giêsu Kitô đã đến để mang lại sự sống mới và niềm hy vọng mới cho mỗi trái tim con người, và Ngài vui mừng mỗi khi một người nào đó trong chúng ta đã để cho Ngài thực hiện theo cách của Ngài. Một dấu hiệu hùng hồn của sự cứu rỗi này là bí tích hoà giải. Trong tòa giải tội, chúng ta sẽ nhận được tất cả những lợi ích về mặt tâm lý và trong thực tế khi xưng tội, chúng ta xưng tội với Chúa như một người thật, đang sống. Và qua người linh mục, chúng ta nhận được sự bảo đảm tuyệt đối về sự tha thứ của Thiên Chúa và những ân sủng khác để bắt đầu một sự khởi đầu mới. Việc xưng tội giống như một dấu hiệu của sự cứu rỗi: chính Thiên Chúa là Đấng đang làm việc ở đó, và chắc chắn bảo đảm như thế.
Thánh Gioan Nepomuceno là một linh mục thời trung cổ hiểu sâu sắc điều này. Vào những năm 1300, tại Cộng hòa Séc ngày nay, thánh Gioan Nepomuceno nổi tiếng về sự thánh thiện đến nỗi nữ hoàng xứ Bohemian đã mời thánh nhân đến để giải tội cho bà. Bà là một người vợ tận tụy, sốt sắng nhưng chồng bà, Vua Wenceslaus, là một người đàn ông buông thả, bạo lực và ghen tuông. Nhà Vua đã nghi ngờ nữ hoàng một cách sai lầm, là không chung thủy. Vì muốn tìm hiểu chắc chắn, nhà vua cho gọi thánh John và ra lệnh cho ngài tiết lộ những gì mà nữ hoàng đã nói với ngài trong toà giải tội. Thánh nhân giải thích rằng ngài không thể làm như vậy, bởi vì những gì trong toà giải tội chỉ có một mình Thiên Chúa biết, và người linh mục chỉ là người trung gian. Nhà vua cố gắng mua chuộc thánh nhân nhưng không hiệu quả, nhà Vua đã đe dọa thánh nhân. Và thánh Gioan cũng một mực từ chối. Nhà vua đã bắt giam thánh nhân trong ngục. Sau khi nhà Vua phóng thích thánh nhân ra ngoài nhà bắt đầu đe dọa thánh nhân trở lại mà mãnh liệt hơn. Nhưng cho dù nhà vua có làm gì đi chăng nữa, vị linh mục thánh thiện này vẫn trung thành với chữ Tín của mình, và với tư cách là một người linh mục, thánh nhân thậm chí còn chỉ ra một số sai trái của nhà vua. Khi nhà vua nổi cơn thịnh nộ lên đến tột đỉnh và ông đã ra lệnh giết Thánh Gioan và ném xác ông xuống sông Moldau.
Bích tích Hoà Giải cũng giống như tất cả các bí tích khác, là một dấu hiệu rõ ràng cho thấy ơn cứu độ mà Chúa Kitô ban cho chúng ta thực sự đến từ Thiên Chúa, không phải là việc làm hay quyền năng của trần thế.
Chúa Giêsu vị Cứu Chúa của chúng ta không phải là một anh hùng trong quá khứ, như Socrates hay Julius Caesar. Chúa Giêsu cũng là con người thật, một con người sống động và hiện diện với chúng ta hôm nay cũng giống như khi Ngài đã hiện diện trong hội đường người Do thái hai ngàn năm trước. Ngài hiện diện ở đây trong Bí tích Thánh Thể, trong Ngôi nhà tạm, mọi ngày và mọi đêm, như ngọn đèn trên cung thánh mỗi nhà thờ hầu nhắc nhở chúng ta biết về sự hiện diện của Ngài. Mỗi khi chúng ta cần đến sức mạnh hay ân sủng của Ngài để củng cố tâm hồn mệt mỏi và yếu đuối của chúng ta, chúng ta có thể đến với Chúa tại đây trước Nhà Tạm trong các thánh đường. Và Chúa Giêsu hiện diện trong tòa giải tội, qua người linh mục của Chúa. Mỗi khi chúng ta cần được thanh tẩy, tìm kiếm sự tha thứ và chữa lành trong ân sủng của Chúa, chúng ta có thể tìm thấy Ngài trong toà giải tội, chính Chúa Giêsu đã trục xuất ma quỷ và làm kinh ngạc đám đông. Chúa cũng tha thứ và trục xuất tội lỗi hành động ma quỷ ra khỏi linh hồn chúng ta. Và Chúa Giêsu cũng hiện diện trong Kinh Thánh, cuốn sách duy nhất trên toàn thế giới được Chúa Thánh Thần soi dẫn trực tiếp. Khi trái tim của chúng ta lo lắng, bồi hồi sợ sệt, chúng ta cần nghe những lời khôn ngoan của Ngài, chúng ta có thể tìm thấy Ngài trong Kinh Thánh. Và Chúa Giêsu cũng đang hiện diện giữa chúng ta trong phụng vụ, bởi vì Người đã hứa rằng bất cứ nơi nào có hai hoặc ba người cầu nguyện nhân danh Ngài, thì Ngài sẽ hiện diện ở đó.
Chúng ta tin những điều này bằng bộ óc con người của chúng ta, nhưng chúng ta có tin bằng trái tim và tâm hồn của chúng ta không?
Mỗi khi có vị Giáo hoàng nào đến thăm một thành phố hay một quốc gia nào, mọi người hầu như náo nức, ngưng trì mọi hoạt động bình thường của họ và tìm cách tiếp cận với ngài. Tuy nhiên, Đức Giáo hoàng chỉ là người Đại diện của Chúa Kitô, quyền chỉ huy thứ hai của Chúa Kitô. Nhưng chúng ta có chính Chúa Kitô hiện diện trong chúng ta mọi nơi, mọi lúc và trong mọi cách.
Hôm nay, Chúa Giêsu tái cam kết với chúng ta trong Thánh lễ này, chúng ta hãy đổi mới cam kết của chúng ta với Ngài. Chúng ta hãy đặt hy vọng về hạnh phúc, ý nghĩa và kết quả trong ân sủng cứu rỗi của Ngài, chứ không phải chỉ là những nỗ lực của chúng ta. Và trong tuần này, chúng ta hãy cố gắng tích cực tìm kiếm sự hiện diện của Chúa nơi chúng ta, để Chúa có thể tạo ra sự khác biệt mà Ngài muốn tạo ra trong cuộc sống của chúng ta.

Imagine how the man possessed by the unclean spirit would have felt after this dramatic incident. He had been tormented by an evil presence perhaps for years. His life was a series of momentary lulls amid constantly recurring and violent demonic attacks. He could take little relief in family life or friendships, because they couldn't protect him either. He had no way of carrying on a normal, peaceful existence. To a great extent he had lost his most precious gift, freedom. His only hope in the face of such a hell on earth was the direct intervention of God - a miracle.
   In some way, each one of us can relate to that situation. We are not possessed, but we all have our sufferings and temptations, often hidden, that seem to have a mysterious power over us, just as the devil had power over this man - until Jesus came along. Maybe while this possessed man was listening to Jesus in the synagogue he felt the agitation of the evil spirit. Maybe he could sense that the demon felt threatened. Maybe he moved closer to the Lord, drawn by a mysterious, subconscious hope. Suddenly the demon exerts his usual power, taking over the man's body and senses in order to lash out at the Messiah. With a mere word, Jesus silences and expels him.
   The man is thrown to the ground in a final burst of evil fury and then, silence. Peace. Dare he believe it? He opens his eyes and knows that he is now himself again, finally freed from the unspeakable torment. His eyes meet Christ's; what gratitude fills his heart as he sees the love and gladness that shine from his Savior's face! Jesus Christ came to bring new life and new hope to every human heart, and he rejoices whenever we let him have his way. One eloquent sign of this salvation is the sacrament of confession. In the confessional, penitents receive all the psychological and practical benefits of confessing their sins to a real, live person. And then, through the priest's ministry, they receive the absolute assurance of God's forgiveness and an influx of grace to make a fresh start. Confession is a like a signature of salvation: God himself is the one at work there, guaranteed. St John Nepomuceno was a priest who understood this profoundly. He lived in the Bohemian city of Prague in the 1300s, in what is now the Czech Republic. He was so well known for his holiness that the queen took him for her confessor. She was a devoted wife, but her husband, King Wenceslaus, was a self-indulgent, violent, and jealous man. He suspected her, wrongly, of being unfaithful. Wanting to find out for sure, the king called St John and asked him to reveal what the queen had told him in confession. The saint explained that he could not do so, because what is said in confession is between the penitent and God alone, the priest is just the mediator. The king tried to bribe him. When that didn't work, he threatened him. St John wouldn't budge. The king threw him in prison. Then he released him and the process of intimidation began all over again. But no matter what the king did, the holy priest stayed faithful to his trust, and even pointed out some of the king's faults as a Christian leader. When the king's fury and rustration reached their peak, he ordered St John to be killed and his body thrown into the River Moldau. Confession, like all the sacraments, is a clear sign that the salvation Christ offers really does come from God, not from any mere earthly power.
     This Jesus who saves is not a hero from the past, like Socrates or Julius Caesar. He is just as real, alive, and present today as he was in that synagogue almost two thousand years ago. He is here in the Eucharist, in the tabernacle, every day and every night, as the sanctuary lamp reminds us. Whenever we need to let the power of his grace fortify our tired and weak souls, we can do so right here. And Jesus is present in the confessional, through the ministry of his priest. Whenever we need to be cleansed, forgiven, and healed by his grace, we can find him there, the very same Jesus who expelled demons and astonished the crowds. And Jesus is also present in the Bible, the only book in the whole world directly inspired by the Holy Spirit. When our worried hearts need to hear his words of wisdom, we can find him there. And Jesus is present among us in this liturgy, because he promised that wherever two or three gathers in his name, he will be there.
    We believe these things with our heads, but do we believe them with our hearts? When the Pope comes to visit a city or a town, everyone stops their normal activity and goes out to see him, to be with him. And yet, the Pope is just the Vicar of Christ, Christ's second in command. But we have Christ himself present in all these ways, all the time.
     Today, as Jesus renews his commitment to us in this Mass, let's renew our commitment to him. Let's put our hopes for happiness, meaning, and fruitfulness in his saving grace, not in our efforts alone. And this week, let's actively seek out his presence, so that he can make the difference he wants to make in our lives.
     Opening Prayer: Lord, fill my heart with love for your word as I reflect in these moments. Send me not only understanding, but a deeper movement of my heart toward you.
Encountering Christ:
1. A New Teaching: In this first chapter of Mark, Jesus was just beginning his ministry and was welcomed in the synagogue to teach. As he began, the devout Jews who were listening realized something greater was in their midst (Luke 11). He taught with authority—with power from the Father, and they were astonished. Every day when we reflect on the word with Christ, he wants to teach us in the same way. He has given us commandments and the Church as authorities in our life. May we be as receptive to his authority as were the men in the synagogue that day.
2. Even the Devil: Jesus’s authority and power calm stormy seas, heal the sick, forgive sins, and expel demons. We know this about Jesus because of his word, but the congregation that day didn’t have hindsight, and they failed to recognize Jesus as the Son of God. The demons even proclaimed that Jesus was “the Holy One of God” but the men did not yet believe. When we listen attentively to Jesus’s teachings and subjugate ourselves to him, we will grow to recognize Jesus’s actions in our daily lives. And we’ll be astonished as he teaches us and shows his tender loving care for us and those we love.
3. Jesus Was Famous: Mark tells us in this Gospel that fame followed Jesus from the very beginning of his ministry. In our modern post-Christian culture, Jesus is “famous” as a spiritual leader of sorts, but those of us who love him want a different kind of fame for Jesus. We want others to know and love Jesus the way we do. When those bogged down with temporal needs come to us for consolation, are we able to give them Jesus? To remind them that they are children of this powerful and loving Trinitarian God? Are we able to spread Jesus’s fame person by person?
Conversing with Christ: Lord, even though I talk to you daily in my prayer, I know that I do not even begin to comprehend the depths of your love for me. I want to recognize your actions in my daily life, to become ever more aware of your presence. And I want to share the “good news” with others so that they too will love you. Speak to me, teach me, and allow me to be your messenger to someone today.
Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will speak your name aloud if given the opportunity to console or advise someone.

Qua bài Tin Mừng hôm nay chúng ta học biết cách dạy dỗ của Chúa, vì Chúa Jêsus dạy dỗ với thẩm quyền vì Ngài là Con Thiên Chúa! Ngài là Đấng có những lời của sự sống đời đời. Ngài đã ở bên Chúa Cha từ muôn thuở. Ngài đã đến để dạy chúng ta con đường đến với Nước Trời. Ngày nay Chúng ta nghe rất nhiều lời nói trong thế gian của chúng ta nhung những lời này có thể gây ra những nhầm lẫn cho chúng ta và khiến chúng ta nghi ngờ đức tin của chúng ta. Liệu chúng ta có thể nghe được sứ điệp Chúa Giêsu Kitô là đường, là sự thật và sự sống bằng trái tim của đức tin?
    Chúa Giêsu có quyền năng, Ngà ra lệnh cho ma quỷ và ma quỳ phải kính sợ. Ma quỷ phải kính sợ quyền năng của Chúa Kitô. Ma quỷ phải câm miệng và bị đuổi đi chỉ bằng một lời của Chúa Kiô. Vì vậy, chúng ta thường lo lắng và sợ hãi là tội lỗi và ma quỷ có thể kìm kẹp chúng ta trong những sự dữ mà chúng ta không thể thoát được. Chúng ta lo sợ là chúng ta không thể sống theo những gì mà Chúa mong muốn nơi chúng ta. Tuy nhiên, với lời của Chúa đã làm cho ma quỷ phải trốn chạy ngay lập tức. Chúa cũng có thể làm như thệ trong cuộc sống của chúng ta nếu chúng ta tin tưởng vào Ngài.
    Những sự gian ác to lớn hay tội lỗi nào mà chúng ta không thể trục xuất ra khỏi lòng chúng ta được? Những lầm lỗi chính hay những khuyết tật trong cuộc sộng của chúng ta là gì? Tất cả những cố gắng để cải hoá cuộc sống của chúng ta đã bị ngăn chặn bởi sức mạnh của sự gian dối này, lớn hơn đức hạnh của chúng ta. Chúng ta cần quay về với Đức Giêsu Kitô và tin tưởng vào lời của Ngài. Chúng ta cần phải cầu xin Ngài giải thoát chúng ra khỏi cái sức mạnh của ma quỷ đang lôi cuốn chúng ta và xin Ngài gìn giữ và đem chúng ta trở lại tình yêu thương cho chính mình và những người khác.
    Lạy Chúa xin ban cho chúng con có sự can đảm để chúng con dám mạnh dạn và tin tưởng vào quyền năng của Chúa để giúp chúng con vượt thắng những tội lỗicủa chúng con và xin cho chúng con sức mạnh để tránh thoát được những sự ảnh hưởng của ma quỷ trong cuộc sống của chúng con.

Reflection Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
His Way of Teaching: Jesus teaches with authority –– of course he does, because he is the Son of God! He is the one who has the words of eternal life. He has been at the Father’s side from all eternity. He has come to teach us the way to the Kingdom of Heaven. So many voices in our world today can confuse us and make us doubt our faith. Can we not just listen with hearts of faith to the simple message that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life?
2. Jesus Is in Charge: Jesus commands the evil one, and he submits. The evil one fears Christ’s power. The evil one is silenced and chased out by a mere word from Christ. So often we worry and fear that sin and evil have a grip on us that we cannot break. We worry we cannot live up to what the Lord expects of us. Yet, his word makes that evil one flee immediately. He can do the same in our lives if we put our total trust in him.
3. The Evil I Cannot Overcome: What is the major evil or sin that I have not been able to expel? What is the primary fault or defect in my life? All my effort to improve has been blocked by this insidious power, greater than my virtue. I need to turn to Christ and put my trust in his word of life. I need to ask him to free me from that power which consumes me and holds me back from loving and giving myself to him and others.
Conversation with Christ: Speak that word of life, Lord. Free me from the power of the evil one. Do not let him run my life or keep me from your love. Give me your grace, and I will be satisfied.
Resolution: I will be bold and trust in the Lord’s power to help me overcome my faults and the power of the devil’s influence on my life.

4th Sunday in Ordinary Time (B)
We hear in today’s gospel how Jesus – new Prophet – speaks and acts with astonishing authority. Jesus is always offering His followers a new way of looking at the human condition. A possessed man or a deaf person or a leper were viewed as mistakes or cursed in the religious-culture of Jesus’ time. They were “out-casts”! Jesus casts out the evil which made the person the “out-cast”. Jesus is offering us a different view of ourselves – His view. He has come to cast upon the earth a sacred sense of humanity. He enters into our human condition to redeem us.
   Jesus comes, not as fire or thunder, but as the gentle voice of the loving God who desires to establish His Lordship over the possessed or wandering or injured of this world. He knows the ways of His opponents and drives them into defeat. As Christians we watch Jesus’ victory in our lives. He drives out selfishness, violence and anxiety from our burdened lives. It is a battle; and to the patient and trusting, goes the victory.
   As Moses raised his follower’s sense of themselves and led them out of slavery into freedom, so does Jesus! He draws us out of sinfulness and leads us from being enslaved to the evil forces to a life of freedom – of possessing ourselves in Jesus Our Lord. Lord, You have formed a people in the image of Your Son.
