 Suy Niệm Tin Mừng Thứ Ba Tuần thứ 5 Thường Niên. (Mark 7:1-13 )

Tin Mừng hôm nay là một bản cáo trạng mà Chúa Giêsu lên án các quy luật của con người và những luật lệ mà những người Biệt Phái đã áp đặt nặng nề trên dân chúng. Những luật lệ này không có dính dáng gì tới trong việc thờ phượng Thiên Chúa đích thực.

Trọng tâm của Lề Luật mà Chúa dạy là yêu mến Thiên Chúa và thương yêu tha nhân. Tình yêu của Thiên Chúa không thể là sự mâu thuẫn với tình yêu tha nhân. Ví dụ, chúng ta không thể yêu mến Thiên Chúa và coi thường những người khác và bất kính với cha mẹ của chúng ta. Chúa Giêsu là gương sáng cho mọi người chúng ta bắt chước trong việc thờ phượng Thiên Chúa đích thực của Ngài.

Trong Tin Mừng hôm nay, Ngài bác bỏ việc thực hành những nghi thức rửa tay vô ích trươc khi ăn của những người Biệt Phái, Nhưng Ngài thực sự hiểu biết những gì là cần thiết để trở thành một Người Do Thái đạo đức và những gì là luật lệ vô nghĩa hoặc vô dụng. Đối với những người yêu qúy bản thân mình hơn cả Thiên Chúa, Ngài sẽ không ngần ngại khiển trách để giúp họ nhìn thấy con đường chân chính của sự thánh thiện.

Sự thánh thiện không phải là một sự tuân giữ luật lệ thế gian một cách hoàn hảo. nhưng phải biết kính mến Thiên Chúa với một trái tim tinh khiết. Ngoài ra , những vị thánh là những người biết tìm cách sống trong một cuộc sống thật đơn giản, biết sẵn lòng làm những điều tốt cho người khác và giúp đỡ những người nghèo khổ và bị áp bức.

Chúng ta không nên bắt chước cuộc sống của những người Biệt Phái. Nhưng thay vào đó chúng ta hãy như vua Solomon trong bài đọc thứ nhất, là người chỉ mong muốn xây dựng được một ngôi nhà cho Thiên Chúa ngự trị, Chúng ta hãy cũng bắt chước xây một ngôi nhà cho Thiên Chúa ngay trong tâm hồn của chúng ta, trong gia đình và trong khu phố của chúng ta. Chúng ta phải biết theo định hướng của Thiên Chúa vì đó sẽ là kim chỉ nam dẫn đưa chúng ta tới không những chỉ là sự thịnh vượng mà còn đưa chúng ta tới sự an bình và hòa hợp trong cuộc sống của chúng ta và trong những gia đình của chúng ta nữa.

Reflection:

The gospel is a very strong indictment of the human rules and regulations the Pharisees added to the Torah which deviated from the true spirit of worshipping God. These rules have no place in the genuine worship of God. The heart of the Law is to love God above all things and to love one's neighbor. Love of God cannot be contradictory to love of neighbor. For example, we cannot love God and despise or neglect our parents. Jesus is the best example of true worship of God. In the gospel, he would not perform the useless ritual washings of the Pharisees. He knew what was essential to being a good Jew and what rules were meaningless or useless. Also, he showed his love for his mother to the end. But he clearly put love of his heavenly Father above all things and this he taught to everyone. To people who love themselves more than God, he would reprimand in order to help them see the true path of holiness. Holiness is not in being a perfect accomplisher of rules and regulations but in loving God with a pure heart. Also, the holy man seeks to live a simple life, doing good to his neighbor and helping the poor and the downtrodden. Let us not be like the Pharisees. Instead let us be like King Solomon in the first reading who desired only to build a house for Yahweh to dwell in. Let us also build a house for God in our hearts, in our families and in our neighborhood. We have to be God-oriented because that will bring us not only prosperity but also peace and harmony in our lives and in the lives of our families.

Introductory Prayer:

Lord, thank you for your Gospel and for all the truth it teaches me. Thank you for warning me of attitudes and dispositions that could become temptations for me. I love you for your goodness and mercy, and I entrust myself into your loving hands.

Petition: Lord, help me to serve you sincerely, in truth and love.

1. “This people honor me only with lip service, while their hearts are far from me.” Jesus calls his disciples to authenticity. Too often so-called disciples give the impression of following him, while at the same time accepting sensual loves and lusts in their heart. Although the Pharisees display the outward trappings of holiness, the way they treat Jesus and others betrays their true character. Jesus would call them “whitewashed tombs” (Matthew 15:27): clean and bright on the outside, but full of dead men’s bones within. Self-righteousness would be their downfall. Such dispositions may lend the proud man certain short-term security, but it will always be illusory since it is not rooted in the truth. Is there any way in which I also pay tribute to God with my lips but say something else in my heart, or behave contrariwise in my actions?

2. “The worship they offer me is worthless.” True worship begins with humility when the soul recognizes that it possesses no good in and of itself, but that all of its goodness comes from God. The Pharisees offered no real worship to God since, in effect, they worshipped only themselves by relying more on their talents and goodness than on the goodness that comes from God. It is not insignificant that when Jesus describes a Pharisee’s prayer in the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, he says “The Pharisee prayed this prayer to himself” (Luke 18:11). How can I make sure that my prayer is truly devoted, meaning that I am addressing Our Lord with the words of my heart?

3. "You make God’s word null and void.” The Pharisees used the talents and gifts God had given them not for God’s glory, but for their own personal gain, whether that gain consisted of praise and admiration or personal comfort and ease. True worship of God, truly placing God above all else, involves using the things God created as means to reaching him. As number 226 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “It means making good use of created things: faith in God, the only One, leads us to use everything that is not God only insofar as it brings us closer to him, and to detach ourselves from it insofar as it turns us away from him:

My Lord and my God, take from me everything that distances me from you.

My Lord and my God, give me everything that brings me closer to you.

My Lord and my God, detach me from myself to give my all to you.”

Conversation with Christ: Lord, thank you for my life and all the good things you have given me. Help me to realize that you have created everything and that all I have is from you. May I use all I have to serve others and as a means to come closer to you, the source of all good.

Resolution: I will examine my conscience to see if I am using any of my gifts and talents to glorify or serve only myself. If so, I’ll strive to put these same gifts at the service of God.

Trong Tin Mừng chúng ta đọc hôm nay, chúng ta thấy Chúa Giêsu và các môn đệ phải đối mặt với những người Pharisêu và các luật sĩ về truyền thống của họ. Người Do Thái có phong tục tập quán phải rửa chân , rửa tay trước khi vào bàn ăn. Truyền thống này trong thực tế đã trở nên quá máy móc mà không có chỗ cho việc thực hiện những điều răn của Thiên Chúa. Chúa Giêsu mang sự thay đổi đến với chúng ta, hầu muốn cho người Do thái nhận thức được rỡ ràng những gì Chúa dậy và được thực hiện mới quang trọng chứ không phải là những thói quen vô nghĩa.

Những Điều răn của Thiên Chúa lập ra là vì lợi ích của con người, nhưng những người Pharisêu và các thầy thông giáo đã việc giải thích và bóp méo các điều răn và việc thực hành những điều răn này để phù hợp với nhu cầu ích kỷ, tham lam của họ. Chúa Giêsu đã chỉ cho họ thấy những điều sai quấy này qua các ví dụ của như việc dâng tiền cúng cho Đức Chúa Trời, nhưng không hề kính phục và chăm sóc cha mẹ già. Do đó Tin Mừng hôm nay Chúa muốn dạy cho chúng ta biết rằng pháp luật và truyền thống của con người phải tuân thủ pháp luật của Thiên Chúa. Giới răn của Thiên Chúa là tình thương yêu, là công lý và hòa bình, như Chúa Giêsu đã cho chúng ta thấy qua cuộc sống của riêng của Ngài. Chúng ta không thể a dua, đồng ý với những tập tục, truyền thống đó để hợp thức hoá cách làm lợi cho một nhóm người hay đem lại lợi ích riêng cho mình.

Lạy Chúa, Xin giúp chúng con biết phân biệt sự thật về các điều răn của Chúa trong cuộc sống của chúng con một cách khôn ngoan sự

Every human community has certain customs and traditions without which it cannot sustain itself. The customs that we follow now have gone through centuries of transformation, constantly changing according to human situations and needs. God’s teachings and commandments never change. In today’s Gospel Jesus confronts the Pharisees and the teachers of the law about their tradition. The Jews had been following the customs of ritual washing before every meal. This tradition had become so mechanical in practice that it did not leave any place for the commandments of God. Jesus brings this aspect to the awareness of his opponents.

God’s commandments are for the good of the human person, but the interpretations and practices of the Pharisees and teachers of the law had twisted the commandments to fit their selfish needs. Jesus pointed this out to them through the example of offering money to God instead of caring for parents. The Gospel thus teaches that human laws and traditions should comply with God’s laws. God’s commandments are mercy, love, justice and peace, as Jesus showed through his own life. We cannot compromise them to fit our self-interest.

Lord, help us discern wisely the truth of Your commandments in our life
