Bài Giảng Thánh Lễ Chúa Nhật Thứ Nhất Mùa Chay năm B.
Mùa Chay năm nay bắt đầu với bài đọc 1 từ chương 9 của sách Sáng thế ký. Nếu chúng ta đọc toàn bộ câu chuyện Sáng thế ký, chúng ta sẽ tìm thấy câu chuyện về ông Noê từ chương sáu đến chương chín.
Trong chương 6, câu chuyện bắt đầu với một lời báo trước về sự sa đọa của con người. “Khi Thiên Chúa thấy sự gian ác quá ghê tởm của con người trên trái đất đến mức nào, và lòng họ không ước ao gì khác ngoài những điều ác, Thiên Chúa hối hận vì Ngài đã tạo ra con người trên trái đất, và lòng Ngài rất đau buồn.” Một số bản dịch Kinh nthánh khác còn nói rằng "Thiên Chúa đã ghê tớm vì tội lỗi của con người."
Trong các bài đọc Kinh thánh, chúng ta nhớ rằng Giao ước Cũ của Thiên Chúa không phải bắt đầu từ thời của ông Ábraham hay ông Môisen. Nhưng Giao ước Cũ đã bắt đầu từ thời Nôê. Như chúng ta đã nghe trong bài đọc 1, cầu vồng hay cái mống trên mây là dấu hiệu của sự Giao ước giữa Thiên Chúa với con người chúng ta! Đó một dấu hiệu của sự chiến thắng của Chúa Giê-su trước ma quỷ và Sa-tan, kẻ thống trị thế giới này.
Lời nhắn nhủ này rõ ràng nói về sự chiến thắng này. Sự khải hoàn của Chúa Giêsu là một sứ điệp hoàn hảo trong Mùa Chay. Nó cho chúng ta biết rằng vì sự chiến thắng của Chúa Giêsu qua cái chết của Ngài trên Thập giá, nhờ Ngài và với Ngài, chúng ta cũng có thể toàn thắng trong cuộc chiến chống lại ma quỷ, ti lỗi và sự dữ.
Vào thời ông Nô-ê, dân chúng trên khắp thế giới trở nên ác độc, ghê gớm, họ thực hiện đủ mọi hành vi ghê tởm và xúc phạm đến Chúa là Thiên Chúa Đấng tạo nên họ. Vì điều này, mà Thiên Chúa đã bảo ông Nô-ê đóng một chiếc tàu và tập hợp gia đình ông cùng hai loại động vật. Khi con tàu được hoàn thành, ông Nô-ê và gia đình của ông, tổng cộng tám người, bước vào tàu với tất cả các thú vật. Sau đó, như chúng ta biết từ những gì Kinh thánh đã dạy chúng ta, là Thiên Chúa đã phạt loài người với cơn đại hồng thuỷ là ngập lụt cả thế giới. Khi lũ lụt đã rút hết nước và con tàu đã chạm đất, Thiên Chúa đã hứa với ông Nôê và con cháu ông là Thiên Chúa hứa là Ngài sẽ không bao giờ cho đại hồng thuỷ hay cho lụt lội cả thế giới để tiêu diệt mọi sinh vật trên trái đất nữa. Ngài đã ban con người thấy cầu vồng để mọi người nhìn thấy trên bầu trời. như là một dấu hiệu cho lời hứa của Ngài.
Trận lụt Đại hồng thuỷ này là biểu tượng của Bí tích Rửa tội của chúng ta do quyền năng của Chúa Thánh Thần. Vì qua Bí tích này của Giáo hội, chúng ta đã chiến thắng qua quỷ và Satan do ân sủng của Thiên Chúa là Cha, do quyền năng của Chúa Thánh Thần và niềm tin của chúng ta nơi sự hy sinh và cứu chuộc của Chúa Giêsu Kitô.
Trong Bài Đọc thứ Hai qua Thư Thứ Nhất của Thánh Phêrô, chúng ta đã nghe Thánh Phêrô so sánh những sự đau khổ của những Kitô hữu với những đau khổ của Chúa Giêsu, Chúa chúng ta. Ông Phêrô nói với họ rằng vì Chúa Giêsu đã toàn thắng, nên họ cũng sẽ chiến thắng. Phép Rửa của họ là lời cam kết về sự chiến thắng của họ vì nhờ Phép Rửa mà họ đã được thông phần vào sự phục sinh của Chúa Giêsu Kitô.
Giống như việc Nô-ê được cứu thoát cơn lụt Đại Hồng Thuỷ, thì những người Kitô hữu như chúng ta cũng sẽ nhận được sự cứu rỗi qua đức tin của chúng ta nơi Chúa Giêsu và việc chúng ta được nhận Phép Rửa.
Sau khi chết trên thập tự giá, Chúa Giêsu đã phục sinh. Ngài đã được đem về Trời trên Thiên đàng và được Thiên Chúa là Cha tôn vinh trên hết mọi loài thọ tạo.
Trong bài Tin mừng, Chúa Giêsu đã loan báo cho mọi người biết rằng Nước Thiên Chúa sẽ bắt đầu phát triển trong thế giới này. Chúng ta, là những người con cái của Thiên Chúa, chúng ta đã được nhận Phép Rửa của Thiên Chúa, chúng ta là những nhân chứng sống động cho Chúa về sự hiện diện của Nước Chúa trong thế giới này của chúng ta .
Qua Giáo Hội Công Giáo, chúng ta là dân được Chúa chọn, là tư tế thánh thiện, và được hiệp nhất trong một trong Thân Thể với Chúa Kitô.
Nhờ Bí tích Rửa tội, cánh cửa dẫn đến ơn cứu độ của chúng ta được mở ra. Qua Bí tích này, chúng ta nhận được ấn tín của Chúa Kitô và sự ngự trị của Chúa Thánh Thần như là bước đầu tiên của chúng ta để được ơn cứu rỗi. [2 Cor. 1:22]. Bí tích Thánh tẩy không tẩy sạch chất dơ bẩn khỏi thân xác của chúng ta vì thân xác của chúng ta được mời gọi để chết đi. Nhưng đó là một lời kêu xin Thiên Chúa cho chúng ta có được một lương tâm tốt qua sự phục sinh của Chúa Giêsu Kitô, Đấng đang ngự bên hữu Đức Chúa Cha.
Chúa Giêsu đã chiến thắng sự bất tuân, bạo động và áp bức. Qua sự chiến thắng của Ngài, chúng ta cũng có thể được toàn thắng. Trong bài Tin Mừng hôm nay, chúng ta đã nghe thấy là Chúa Giêsu đã chiến thắng Satan như thế nào. Khi Ngài ở trong đồng vắng bốn mươi ngày, Ma quỷ, Sa-tan đã cám dỗ Ngài. Nhưng Chúa Giêsu không dễ để cho chính Ngài bị Ma Quỷ dụ dỗ. Chúa Giêsu đến trong thế giới này để chống lại và lật đổ vương quốc thế gian này của Sa-tan, mà sự khởi đầu của nó là khi ông Adong và bà Eva đã bất tuân lời Thiên Chúa trong Vườn Địa Đàng.
Chúa Giê-su đã đến với thế gian để dành lại Nước Thiên Chúa, nơi từng thuộc về Ngài một cách hợp pháp, nhưng đã bị Sa-tan đánh cắp qua tội lỗi của nhân loại
Hôm nay, Chúa Giêsu nói với chúng ta rằng, “Thời kỳ đã mãn, và Triều Đại Thiên Chúa đã đến gần. Anh em hãy sám hối và tin vào Tin Mừng.” Là thành viên của Nước Thiên Chúa, trong Mùa Chay, chúng ta được mời gọi ăn năn tội lỗi mà chúng ta đã xúc phạm đến Thiên Chúa. Chúng ta được mời gọi để nhớ đến sự chiến thắng khải hoàn của Chúa Giêsu Kitô. Chúng ta được kêu gọi để chiến thắng trong cuộc sống đức tin của chúng ta nơi Đức Kitô với tư cách là con cái của Thiên Chúa qua phép rửa tội. Chúng ta được mời gọi để tiến lên và tỏa sáng bằng sự vâng phục, sự phục vụ, lòng bác ái của chúng ta với người khác, qua những lời cầu nguyện, việc hy sinh, và tất cả trong tình yêu của Thiên Chúa. Nếu chúng ta làm như vậy, chúng ta biết rằng thì cuối cùng sự chiến thắng của chúng ta cũng sẽ vinh quang nhờ sự cứu rỗi mà chúng ta sẽ được thừa hưởng với tư cách là con cái của Thiên Chúa.

First Sunday of Lent B
Lent begins this year with a 1st reading from chapter 9 of the book of Genesis. If we read the complete story of Genesis, we will find the Noah story from chapters six through nine. In Chapter 6, the story begins with a notice of the depravity of the people. “When the Lord saw how great was man's wickedness on earth, and how no desire that his heart conceived was ever anything but evil, he regretted that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was grieved.” Some of the translations may say that “God was sickened by the sins of man.”
In the scripture readings, we remembered that the Old Covenant of God goes far beyond the days of Abraham or Moses. The Old Covenant had its beginning in the days of Noah. As we heard earlier, the rainbow in the clouds is the sign of God's Covenant with us! a sign of the triumph of Jesus over Satan who was the ruler of this world.
This message clearly speaks of this triumph. The triumph of Jesus is a perfect message during the Lenten Season. It tells us that because of the triumph of Jesus by His death on the Holy Cross, through Him and with Him, we can also be triumphant in our battle against evil.
In the days of Noah, the people throughout the world had become very evil, practicing all kinds of abominations that offended the Lord God. Because of this, God told Noah to build an ark and to gather his family and two of every kinds of animals. When the ark was completed, Noah and his family, eight persons in total, entered the ark with all the animals. Then, as we know from what the Holy Bible teaches us, God flooded the world. When the days of the flooding were over and the ark had touched land, God promised to establish a Covenant with Noah and all his descendants. God promised that never again would He flood the entire world to destroy every living thing on the earth. As a sign of His promise, He gave the rainbow to the world for all to see in the sky.
This flood is a symbol of our Sacrament of Baptism that was to come by the power of the Holy Spirit. For through this Church Sacrament, we triumph over Satan by the grace of God the Father, the power of the Holy Spirit and our faith in the atoning sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ. In the Second Reading from the First Letter of Peter, we heard Peter comparing the sufferings of the Christians with the sufferings of our Lord Jesus.
Peter tells them that since Jesus had triumphed, they would also triumph. Their Baptism was the pledge of their triumph for it gave them a share in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Just as Noah was saved by passing through the waters of the flood, so also, Christians receive their salvation through faith in Jesus and their passage through the water of Baptism. Having died on the cross, Jesus resurrected. He was raised to Heaven and glorified by God the Father above all living creation. In the Gospel, Jesus was announcing that the Kingdom of God would begin its growth on earth. We, God's baptized children, are living proof of the presence of the spiritual Kingdom of God on earth. Through the Holy Catholic Church, we are God's chosen people, a holy priesthood, and united as one in the Body of Christ.
Through Baptism, the door to our salvation is opened. Through this Sacrament, we receive the seal of Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit as our first step towards salvation. [2 Cor. 1:22]
The Sacrament of Baptism does not remove the dirt from our physical bodies for our bodies are called to die. But it is an appeal to God for a good conscience through the resurrection of Jesus Christ who is now sitting at the right hand of the Father. Jesus triumphed over disobedience, rebellion and persecution. Through His triumph, we can also be triumphant.
In today's Gospel, we heard how Jesus was triumphant over Satan. While in the wilderness for forty days, Satan tempted Him. Jesus did not allow Himself to be seduced by Satan. He came on earth to overthrow the worldly kingdom of Satan that had its beginning when Adam disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden. Jesus came on earth to reclaim God's Kingdom that rightfully belongs to Him, but stolen by Satan through sin.
Today, Jesus tells us that, “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel.”As members of the Kingdom of God, during the Lenten Season, we are called to repent of our sins that offend God. We are called to remember the triumph of Jesus. We are called to triumphantly live our faith in Christ as baptized children of God. We are called to go forward and shine by our obedience, our servitude, our charity towards others, through prayers, sacrifices, all in the love of God. If we do so, we know that in the end, our triumph shall also be glorious through the salvation that we shall inherit as children of God.

First Sunday of Lent (Year B)
The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him. Mark 1:12–13
Today’s Gospel from Mark presents us with a short version of the Temptation of Jesus in the desert. Matthew and Luke give many more details, such as Jesus’ threefold temptation from satan. But Mark simply states the fact that Jesus was driven into the desert for forty days and was tempted.
What’s interesting to note is that it was “The Spirit” Who drove Jesus into the desert. Jesus did not go there against His will; He went there freely in accord with the will of the Father and by the direction of the Holy Spirit. Why would the Spirit drive Jesus into the desert for this time of fasting, prayer and temptation?
First of all, this time of temptation took place immediately after Jesus was baptized by John. And though Jesus Himself did not spiritually need that baptism, these two series of events teach us much. The truth is that when we choose to follow Christ and live out our baptism, we receive a new strength to fight evil. The grace is there. As a new creation in Christ, you have all the grace you need to conquer the evil one, sin and temptation. Jesus, therefore, set for us an example in order to teach us this truth. He was baptized and then was driven into the desert to face the evil one so as to tell us that we also can conquer him and his evil lies.
As Jesus was in the desert enduring these temptations, “the angels ministered to him.” The same is true with us. Our Lord does not leave us alone in the midst of our daily temptations. Rather, He always sends us His angels to minister to us and to help us defeat this vile enemy.
What is your greatest temptation in life? Perhaps you struggle with a habit of sin that you fail at time and time again. Perhaps it’s a temptation of the flesh, or a struggle with anger, self-righteousness, dishonesty or something else. Whatever your temptation may be, know that you have all you need to overcome it on account of the grace given to you by your Baptism, strengthened by your Confirmation and regularly fed by your participation in the Most Holy Eucharist.
Reflect, today, upon whatever your temptations may be. See the Person of Christ facing those temptations with you and in you. Know that His strength is given to you if you but trust Him with unwavering confidence.
My tempted Lord, You allowed Yourself to endure the humiliation of being tempted by satan himself. You did so to show me and all Your children that we can overcome our own temptations through You and by Your strength. Help me, dear Lord, to daily turn to You with my struggles so that You will be victorious in me. Jesus, I trust in You.
