Suy Niệm Tin Mừng Thứ Ba Tuần thứ Tư Mùa Chay

Qua bài đọc thứ Nhất trong sách Ezekiel hôm nay, chúng tan hư thấy một mùa xuân đang đến với hoa cỏ rực nở, vây cối đâm chổi nở hoa. Mùa xuân này được miêu tả như Chúa Thánh Thần mà Thiên Chúa sẽ ban cho những người được chọn của Ngài. Nước chảy từ nơi ngực Chúa Jêsus, khi người lính lấy đòng đâm vào lồng ngục Ngài chính là biểu tượng của Đức Chúa Thánh Thần. Bởi vì chỉ có Chúa Thánh Linh mới có thể cho phép và giúp chúng ta sinh hoa kết trái. Chúa Thánh Linh ban cho chúng ta sức mạnh và khả năng để thực hiện và làm những công việc tốt.

    Trong Tin bài Mừng, Chúa Giêsu đã chữa bệnh cho một người bị liệt cả người nay tại hồ Bét-da-tha. Ở nơi này khi sóng trong hồ nổi dậy. nước trong hồ có thể chữa được các thứ bệnh tật, nhưng hôm nay, chính Chúa Giêsu đã chữa lành người bại liệt nằm đây bao nhiêu năm chỉ bằng hành động và lời Ngài phán ra. Tất cả chúng ta cần được chữa lành và thanh tẩy, để được tái sanh trong nước rửa tội và trong ơn Chúa Thánh Thần. Người bại liệt nằm một chỗ trong 38 năm, đã được Chúa chữa lành “vác chóng mà đi”. Còn chúng ta, cho dù chúng ta có bị đau bệnh trong tâm hồn của chúng ta có bao lâu đi nữa, Đức Chúa Jêsus vẫn có thể chữa lành cho chúng ta nếu chúng ta muốn và cho phép Ngài đến với chúng ta. Trong Mùa Chay này, chúng ta hãy xin Chúa Giêsu giúp thánh tẩy và làm sạch tội lỗi của chúng ta, để chúng ta biết canh tân cuộc sống của chúng ta và làm cho chúng ta biến thành những người mới luôn có trái tim biết yêu thương và lòng thương xót. Chỉ có Ngài mới có thể cứu chữa những bệnh tật cho chúng ta. Chúng ta hãy kiên trì cầu xin và tin tưởng vào Ngài.

REFLECTION

In today's passage from the book of Ezekiel, we read about a spring which makes everything grow. This spring prefigures the Holy Spirit which the Lord will give to His elect. The water that flowed from Jesus' side after the soldier pierced him with a lance is also a symbol of the Holy Spirit. Only the Holy Spirit can allow us to bear fruit. The Holy Spirit gives us the strength and ability to do good works.

    In the Gospel, Jesus cures a sick man at the Pool of Bethzatha. Once again there is water which cures but it is Jesus who cures through his words and actions. All of us need healing and purification, to be born again through the waters of baptism and through the Holy Spirit. The sick man had been sick for 38 years but no matter how long we have been sick, Jesus can cure us.

    During this time of Lent, let us ask Jesus to cleanse us of our sins, to renew us and make us new persons full of love and mercy. Only he can cure us. Let us pray and have faith in him.

Tuesday 4th week of Lent

Opening Prayer: Jesus, I want to be healed. Help me to be open to receiving your mercy and grace so I can live an abundant life here and now and have eternal life with you in the next.

Encountering Christ:

1. Desert Wandering: Today’s Gospel passage continues the Johannine theme of miraculous healing. Just before this in the Gospel of John (also yesterday’s Gospel reading), Jesus healed the royal official’s son. Here he healed a man who had been ill for thirty-eight years. Thirty-eight years is significant because that is how long Israel wandered in the wilderness of Paran (see Numbers 33). Moses wrote: “And the time from our leaving Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, until the entire generation, that is, the men of war, had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them” (Deuteronomy 2:14). This man had been crippled, sitting near a pool of healing water but unable to access it, for thirty-eight years; he was “wandering in a desert.” Bethesda means “house of mercy” or “house of grace” in Hebrew. The man was in need of mercy and grace, but he could not access i t. He needed Jesus to extend mercy and grace to him in order to restore him to life. Is there any place in our life when we have been wandering away from Jesus’ mercy and grace?

2. Come to the Water: Jesus asked the man if he wanted to be healed. Jesus wants to heal us too, but we must consent to be healed by believing that he has the power to heal us from everything that afflicts us, most importantly our sins and vices. Jesus’ mercy and grace flow out of him as “living water” (John 4:10). We are called to come to his pool of mercy and grace and submerge ourselves in it. Each time we approach Jesus to confess our sins in the sacrament of Reconciliation, we come to this deep pool of mercy. We open our hearts, allowing our sins to come out of us, and Jesus pours his living water of mercy into them, purifying and restoring them. We receive mercy for our sins and grace to strengthen us against future temptation.

3. Jesus, Font of Healing: Jesus Christ is the new temple (cf. John 2:21). In our first reading today, Ezekiel had a vision of this new temple with a wonderful stream flowing ever deeper from its right side (Ezekiel 47:1). This stream made saltwater fresh and dirty water clean. Wherever it flowed, it brought health and life in abundance (Ezekiel 47:8-12). The new temple mount is Calvary, where the sweet waters of baptism flowed out of Christ’s side: “...one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water” (John 19:34). The man wanted to get to the healing water in the pool; in his abundant mercy Jesus, the font of healing, came to him.

Conversing with Christ: Jesus, thank you for coming to save and heal me. Help me to come to your living waters of mercy and grace. I know that I cannot save myself, but I need you to come and bring me salvation and restore my wholeness.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will make a plan to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation soon.

Chúng ta như đang sống qua một cuộc sống hầu như chỉ biết chấp nhận những gì mà thế giới vật chất này đã giao ban cho chúng ta và chỉ biết chờ đợi cho một sự may rủi hay một thời điểm nào đó khi có một cái gì đó hoặc có ai đó sẽ đến để giúp chúng ta để đem chúng ta vào hồ Nước Bếtthada để được ơn chữa lành. Hôm nay Chúa Giêsu nói với chúng ta rằng Ngài có thể chữa lành cho chúng ta và Ngài muốn giúp chúng ta trong các tình hình phức tạp hiện tại của chúng ta. Nhưng chúng ta đã không nhận ra được ơn lành và sức mạnh nơi Đức Giêsu Kitô. Ngài sẽ cứu chữa chúng ta tất cả các bệnh tật (không những chỉ có về thể chất nhưng cũng còn cả tình cảm và tinh thần). Nhưng một điều duy nhất mà chúng ta cần phải làm đó là cầu xin với một tấm lòng kiên trì, thành thật, đơn sơ và tin tưởng.

    "Lạy Chúa Giêsu, xin Chúa đặt trong tâm hồn chúng con một niềm khát kháo mãnh liệt để cúng con biết thay đổi và biến đổi theo cách thánh thiện của Chúa. Xin Chúa Thánh Thần thanh tẩy trái tim chúng con và đổi mới tâm hồn của chúng con để chúng con có một tình yêu đầy nhiệt thành và biết khao khát làm những gì đẹp lòng Chúa và biết từ chối tất cả những gì trái với ý muốn của Chúa. "

Reflection:

Today's gospel talks about a man who is sick and cannot move freely by himself. He has been waiting for 38 years to be able to get into the pool when the angel of the Lord touches it so he can be healed, but because of his condition he is unable to do so. Then one day, Jesus comes and heals him, just like that, because he wanted to.

    We all live our lives like this sick man. We go through life just accepting what has been handed to us by the world and just waiting for the moment when something or someone will come to help us to go into the pool to be healed. We are waiting for someone to come into our lives to change our situation, to help us out of our difficulties, for someone to give us the money to pay off a debt, for someone to discover a cure for the cancer we have, or for someone to give the answer to the board exam so we can finally pass it and start earning a lot.

    Let us not wait for someone to come and help us. Today Jesus is telling us that he can heal us and he wants to help us in our present situation. We do not realize that our healing (not only physical but emotional and spiritual as well) comes from Jesus Christ. All we need to do is ask.

REFLECTION 2017

Both readings today speak of life-giving water: the first reading speaks of water from the Temple which gives life to fruit trees and plants; the Gospel reading speaks of an extraordinary pool with special healing power.

    In the Gospel reading Jesus cured the sick man but enraged the Jews because he healed on the sabbath and told the cured man to take up his mat, something not allowed on the sabbath.

    The Jews did not appreciate Jesus' kindness when he cured the man sick for thirty-eight years: all they saw was Jesus violating the sabbath. How much do we appreciate God's continuing goodness and care for us? Are we hypocrites like the Jewish leaders?

REFLECTION

During this time of Lent, one message that comes through to us is that of cleansing; to be made new, to be refreshed. The first reading presents us with the vision of a river flowing from beneath the temple. Its water gives life to all that come into contact with it because "this water comes from the sanctuary."

    Today's Gospel mentions the paralytic by the pool at Bethesda. He was there because he believed that the water had healing powers. An angel, the people believed, would stir the water and the first person to get into the pool after the stirring would be cured of any illness he had. This paralytic, incapable of lowering himself into the pool and having no friend or relative who would put him into the water, was however a man of strong will and deep faith. Sensing the paralytic's firm desire to be cured, Jesus told him to pick up his mat and walk. At that very moment the man walked.

    Jesus manifested himself as the source of the healing, cleansing, refreshing and renewing water. Acceptance of this as true is the response Jesus looks for in each of us. God loves us and wants all of us to be saved. He wants all, not just the good, to be saved. He is patient with us and allows a special time for the desire to grow within us. For this reason Jesus chose to heal the paralytic on a Sabbath. As God saw it, the Sabbath was made for man and not the other way around.
