Suy Niệm Thứ Tư Tuần thứ Ba mùa Chay

Các điểu luật mà Chúa đã ban cho loài người đều có ý nghĩa, ít nhất là những điều luật thực sự do Thiên Chúa ban ra. Luật của Chúa giúp chúng ta trở nên thực sự là con người và biết xây dựng xã hội dựa trên công lý, tình thương, chia sẻ và sống trong sự hòa bình. Khi chúng ta tuân giữ các luật này, chúng ta phát triển trong sự thịnh vượng và hạnh phúc; khi chúng ta vi phạm những luật này, thì chính chúng ta tự tạo ra đau khổ cho chính mình. Sách Đệ Nhị Luật thôi thúc con người phải tuân theo các điều răn của Thiên Chúa, vì đó là những điều khôn ngoan mà Thiên Chúa đã dạy. Tất cả các quốc gia khác sẽ thấy một xứ sở tuyệt vời và đó là dân Chúa đã tạo ra và khắp cỏi địa cầu sẽ phải ngạc nhiên trước sự khôn ngoan và sáng suốt của họ, và Thiên Chúa sẽ được ca ngợi. Khi chúng ta tuân giữ các điều răn của Thiên Chúa trong cuộc sống hàng ngày của chúng ta, chúng ta cũng sẽ được hạnh phúc và bình an. Chúng ta cũng sẽ làm chứng nhân cho sự khôn ngoan và tốt lành của Thiên Chúa.

            Một số người nghĩ rằng Chúa Giêsu đến đã bãi bỏ Luật Của Chúa đo các tiên tri truyền lại, nhưng còn hơn thế nữa. Trong Tin Mừng Matthew, Chúa Giêsu nhấn mạnh rằng Ngài để là chỉ để hoàn thành những luật đó. Trong thực tế, Ngài còn "chú trọng hơn nữa 'trong một số trường hợp, Ngài nhấn mạnh rằng những người theo Ngài phải vượt qua những người Pharisêu trong sự công chính và công bằng. Đường dẫn đến Nước của Thiên Chúa không phải là luôn luôn là một điều dễ dàng và có nhiều điểm thô. Chúng ta không nên nghĩ rằng phúc âm là một cánh cửa miễn phí để chúng ta bước qua một đời sống đạo đức và tinh thần dễ dàng. Đừng nản lòng và cũng đừng thất vọng vì những sự thất bại của những người khác trong giáo hội hay trong xã hội. Những lời dạy của Chúa Giêsu đem lại những lợi ích cho chúng ta;  hạnh phúc, sự tăng trưởng của chúng ta và hạnh phúc. Luôn luôn phấn đấu cho con đường ở trên cao hơn, không nên phụ thuộc vào những người khác và những cách họ có thể tạo.. Lạy Chúa, xin giúp chúng con luôn luôn biêt phấn đấu để tuân theo các lệnh của Chúa ban.

 

Reflection SG 2016

The laws that God has given humankind make sense, at least the laws that really come from God. Divine laws help us to be truly human and to build societies that are based on justice, compassion, sharing, and peaceful living. When we obey these laws, we prosper and are happy; when we violate them, we create misery for ourselves. Deuteronomy urges people to obey God’s commandments because they are wise. Other nations will see the wonderful land that the people of God have created and marvel at their wisdom and discernment, and God will be praised. When we follow God’s commandments in our daily lives, we will be happy and at peace. We will also be witnesses to God’s wisdom and goodness.

            Some think that Jesus abolished the Law and the Prophets, but far from it. In Matthew, he insisted that he merely fulfilled it. In fact, he even ‘raised the bar’ in a number of cases, insisting that his followers outdo the Pharisees in righteousness. The path to the kingdom of God is not always an easy one and there are many rough spots. We should not think that the gospel is a ‘free pass’ to an easy moral and spiritual life. Do not be discouraged or disillusioned by the failings of others in the church or in society. The teachings of Jesus are intended for our benefit — our happiness, growth, and well-being. Always strive for the higher path, regardless of the path others may chose.  Lord, may I always strive to obey Your commandments.

 

Wednesday 3^rd week of lent

Opening Prayer: Jesus, you want me to be great in the Kingdom of Heaven! It’s hard to imagine since I see myself as weak and so far from sanctity. Help me enter into this time of prayer, speak to me, and help me to be open to your will so that you can help me desire what you desire. 

Encountering Christ:

1.      Had He Come to Abolish: Jesus brought something radically new to God’s people, the chosen people of Israel, and often surprised them by the changes he made to their teachings. They had, after all, added many extraneous tenets to the law over time, expecting the people to fulfill them. And Jesus was setting some of this aside. He was imploring them to live virtue, not absolute legalism, so it could very well have seemed to them that Jesus had come to abolish the law. In reality, life in the Church was to become much different than the Judaism practiced in those days—a prime example being the replacement of animal sacrifices offered repeatedly in the temple with the celebration of the Eucharist. Jesus did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it.

2.      Until All Things Have Taken Place: God slowly revealed himself to man through the patriarchs of the Old Testament and the prophets. But when God sent the Word, Jesus fulfilled the law and left us revelation that will never change. According to Hebrews 1:1-2, “In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets; in these last days, he spoke to us through a Son, whom he made heir of all things and through whom he created the universe.” Through the Scripture and Church Tradition, we have this public revelation, and we continue to deepen our understanding of it as the Church has interpreted private revelations for us over the millennia. What a consolation this can be for us, who pray with and meditate daily on the Scriptures, to have this reassurance of truth! It can also be a warning, however: “Christian faith cannot accept ‘revelations’ that claim to surpass or correct the Revelation of which Chri st is the fulfillment…” (CCC 67). If we find ourselves objecting to the “smallest letter or the smallest part of the letter,” we can lean on the Holy Spirit to enlighten us. 

3.      The Greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven: We could very easily become distracted by wondering if the Pharisees, whom Jesus was addressing, were destined to become “least in the Kingdom of Heaven.” Rather than concern ourselves with who will be “greatest” or “least,” which is a judgment reserved for Our Lord, let’s take to heart his invitation to obey and teach the commandments to others. By serving Jesus in this way, we are cooperating with the graces Jesus tells us are necessary to enter his eternal Kingdom, and acknowledging that all souls in Heaven are great through his divine will.

Conversing with Christ: Lord, I want to be one of those who love your law. You promise to make me like you, to complete me, and to bring me one day to heaven. Help me see how your law and living it out are a part of that plan so that I can love you more and make your will the passion of my life. 

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will review the Ten Commandments with an attitude of love.

Những người Pharisêu và những thầy thông giáo, những kẻ thù Chúa Giêsu đã xem Ngài như  là một Người nổi loạn gây phá rối,  và vì đó là lý do tại sao họ sợ Ngài. Nhưng Chúa Giêsu tuyên bố một cách khác, Ngài nói rằng Ngài đến không phải để phá hủy luật pháp, nhưng để thực hiện nó một cách trọn vẹn. Và Ngài kêu gọi mọi người hãy làm như thế.

            Hôm nay, chúng ta đang sống trong một thế giới với những sự tiến triển của kỷ thuật nên tương đối tiện lợi và làm cho con người đâm ra lười biếng. Với phhương tiẹn kỹ thuậ hiện đại, con người chúng ta tìm ra nhiều phương cách tránh né luật lệ và làm cho con người trở nên lời biếng hơn, thậm chí trong đức tin của họ. Chúng ta có thể hiểu một cách dễ dàng lý do tại sao. Vì chúng ta dang sống trong một thế hệ rất gắn bó với sự tự do và do tiếp xúc với thông tin mau chóng qua những kỹ thuật mới, và nhiều "tiếng ồn" của tất cả các loại thể khác nhau qua Diện Thoại di động, internet…. Sự dễ dãi và chấp nhận đã trở thành một cách sống.

            Nhưng Chúa Giêsu không bỏ qua kiểu tiếp cận đấy. Ngài đã kịch liệt phản đối và dạy chúng ta  rằng Ngài đại diện cho pháp luật của Cha Ngài, là Thiên Chúa, và luật pháp của Chúa thì không bao giờ thay đổi. Nhưng với Ngài luật pháp không phải là một hạn chế, nhưng một lời mời gọi sự tự do, tự do khỏi sự rang buộc bời ma quỷ và tội lỗi, và tất cả những nỗi đau khổ sẽ đi kèm với tội lỗi.

Ngài cũng đã cho chúng ta một sư thử thách mỗi ngày: là sống và giữ luật của Thiên Chúa, bất chấp mọi sự cám dỗ của ma quỷ đáng cám dổ chúng ta phá bỏ Luật đó.

            Có phải chúng ta đang sống cuộc sống quá thoải mái, tự do, và làm ảnh hưởng đến những người khác, à họ cũng sống như vậy? Hay chúng ta luôn biết đứng và bảo vệ luật của Thiên Chúa, và mang lại cho những người khác với chúng ta tự do đích thực? Sau hết, chúng ta hãy cầu nguyện cho nhau, cho những người đã nhờ chúng ta cầu nguyện và cho những người cần những lời cầu nguyện của chúng ta nhiều nhất.

 

Reflection

A disruptor – this was how Jesus' enemies viewed Him, and it was precisely why they feared him. But Jesus claimed otherwise, saying that He came not to destroy the law, but to fulfill it. And He called on the people to do the same.

            Today, we live in a world of convenient relativity and loose interpretation. There are many ways around rules, and people have grown lax, even in their faith. It's easy to understand why. We are a generation so fixated on freedom and so exposed to information and "noise" of all kinds. Permissiveness becomes a way of life.

            But Jesus does not condone that kind of approach. He vehemently says that He stands for His Father's law, and that the law is unchanging. But the law for Him was not a restriction, but an invitation to freedom – from sin, and all the pain that comes with it.

            He poses us the same challenge today: to stand on the side of God's law, despite every temptation to break it. Coldplay puts it eloquently in the song Clocks: "Am I part of the cure? Or am I part of the disease?" Do we live lives of permissiveness, and influence others to do the same? Or do we stand for God's law, and bring others with us to true freedom?
