Suy Niệm Bài Đọc lễ Thánh Andrê Tông Đồ
Trong Tin Mừng hôm nay chúng ta được biết rất ít các chi tiết mà Chúa Giêsu đã đã thực hiện việc kêu gọi các môn đệ và tông đồ của Ngài. Tất cả chúng ta chỉ được biết qua bài Tin Mừng hôm nay là việc Chúa Giêsu gọi hai cặp anh em để đi theo Ngài làm môn đệ, hai cặp anh em đó là Phêrô, Andrê, Giacôbê và Gioan. Chúng ta tự hỏi Chúa Giêsu đã nói gì với họ mà họ đã có cảm hứng để bỏ tất cả mọi thứ họ đang làm để theo Chúa, một người không quen không biết, một người xa lạ đối họ? Chúa Giêsu đã nói những gì để thuyết phục họ để họ theo Ngài? Làm thế nào mà Chúa Giêsu đã có dịp để tiếp cận và quen với họ? Trong việc Chúa Giêsu đối xử với họ có cái gì đột xuất khác thường mà làm họ tin và theo Chúa?
Tin Mừng không cho chúng một câu trả lời rõ ràng, Tuy nhiên, chúng ta có thể, phản ánh và đặt mình vào vị trí của các tông đồ đầu tiên như Andrê hôm nay. Có lẽ chúng ta phải gãi đầu, gãi cổ để suy nghĩ về một số đặc điểm về người đó: sự trung thực, tính toàn vẹn, sự rộng lượng, uy tín, và những số ưu điểm khác của người ấy. Chúng ta chắc chắn không dễ gì bỏ tất cả để theo ngươi mà chúng ta không hề quen biết.
Theo trí tưởng tượng của chúng ta, chắc chắn các tông đồ đã có cái nhìn quan sát như thế và đã nhận thấy được những phẩm chất tuyệt hảo và sự lôi cuốn nơi Chúa Giêsu. Còn những gì đặc biệt khác nơi Chúa có lẽ sẽ thuyết phục được họ trong những bước đường theo Chúa mỗi ngày của họ.? Đây cũng là những phẩm chất mà chúng ta cần phải tìm thấy nơi người mà chúng ta muốn lựa chọn là người lãnh đạo của chúng ta. Đây cũng là những giá trị phẩm chất mà chúng ta cần nên dạy con em của chúng ta và thúc đẩy những phẩm chất ấy trong xã hội mà chúng ta đang sống. Vì đó là những đặc điểm làm cho chúng ta trở nên giống như Chúa Giêsu, và nếu như trong cuộc của chúng ta được ngày càng trở nên giống như Ngài, thì chúng ta sẽ chắc chắn sẽ được cứu.

Thánh Andrê lúc đầu là môn đệ và đi theo Thánh Gioan Tẩy Giả. Khi Andrê và Phêrô được Chúa Giêsu gọi để theo Ngài, và để trở thành những người thợ đánh cá người. Họ đã để lại tất cả mọi thứ để theo Ngài. Trong bài đọc thứ nhất, Thánh Phaolô nói với chúng ta rằng tất cả những ai, Do Thái hay Dân Ngoại đều giống như nhau, được gọi để theo Chúa Giêsu, nhưng không phải tất cả mọi người biết lắng nghe Tin Mừng của Chúa. Chúng ta đã nghe lời mời gọi đó và thể hiện sự chấp thuận của chúng ta bằng cách tin tưởng từ trong tâm hồn và thú nhận với đôi môi tuyên xưng đức tin của chúng. Đức tin mà chúng ta đã nhận được là khotàng to lớn lớn nhất của chúng ta và nếu để mất đức tin đó thì chúng ta sẽ có sự mất mát to lớn nhất của cuộc đời chúng ta. Opening Prayer: Lord God, I am only able to pray because you have given me the gift of faith. You have bid me, called me to prayer. Here I am, Lord, and I want to follow your lead. You are the Lord of my life. You are the only one worth following. Thank you for calling me to be your disciple.
Encountering Christ:
Fisher of Men: This short Gospel passage has all the excitement of the beginning of an adventure story. Andrew, the unsuspecting fisherman plying his trade, was suddenly called to the extraordinary life of an Apostle: “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Would Andrew have understood what this curious invitation implied? Possibly. Andrew had seen Jesus when John the Baptist had proclaimed, “Behold the Lamb of God,” and he “heard what he said and followed Jesus” (John 1:36-37). Jesus had prepared him ahead of time to receive his vocation as a “fisher of men.” Jesus always gives us what we need to fulfill our vocational calling.
The Great Saint: St. Andrew has a special place in salvation history. He was the Apostle who brought St. Peter to Christ (John 1:41). He and Philip also brought the Greeks to Christ (John 12:22-32). Before the multiplication of loaves and fishes, Andrew was not afraid to state the obvious: “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?” ( John 6:8-13). Perhaps, though, today’s Gospel is most revealing of Andrew’s character because we see–at the very beginning–Andrew’s loving spontaneity and his radical trust in Jesus. This fisherman, whose whole livelihood depended on fishing boats and equipment, "left [his] nets and followed him.”
My Vocation: As we begin this Advent season, the Church’s “New Year,” it can be a good time to reflect on our original calling. Perhaps we were like Andrew; happy fishing and doing our own thing until someone gave witness to God, compelling us to leave our safety nets and follow Jesus as dedicated apostles. Or perhaps we were like Zebedee; staying “behind” to fish and earn an income to support the family and the missionaries. Or are we like Peter who had heard about Jesus but hesitated, needing a miracle and a direct invitation to accept the call and follow Jesus? However our vocation began, we can be grateful for the call as we vigilantly keep our eyes fixed on Jesus this Advent.
Conversing with Christ: Lord Jesus, grant me the courage to follow you as St. Andrew did. Thank you for our friendship, our story, your calling me to follow you. Please continue to help me persevere in all you ask of me. St. Andrew, pray for us!
Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will reach out to a friend and do something small to be another Christ to him or her.
November 30 St Andrew, Apostle (Rom. 10:9-18; Mt. 4:18-22)
Andrew had been a follower of St John the Baptist. When he and Peter were called by Jesus to be His followers, and fishers of men, they left all things to follow Him. In the first reading, St Paul tells us that all men, Jews and Gentiles alike, are called to follow Jesus but that not all will listen to the Good News. We have heard that call and manifest our acceptance by believing from our heart and confessing with our lips. The faith we have received is our greatest treasure and to lose it would be our greatest loss. Since it is a priceless gift and is offered to all men and women, it shoud be our endeavour to share this faith like Peter and Andrew who were ‘fishers of men’. This sharing of faith can be done in many ways, and the means available to each one of us is to live a better Christian life nourished by the love of the Lord in prayer.
The experience of St Theresa of the Child Jesus, Patroness of the Missions, who did her missionary work from within the walls of a convent, is our assurance that we too can collaborate with Jesus in the Church by spreading the Good News of God’s love to all people.
• Lord, may the example of St Andrew spur within us the desire to share our faith with others, especially by being generous in loving You and our fellowmen and women.
November 30- Feast Saint Andrew Apostle
Opening Prayer: Lord, thank you for this time to reflect on what you are calling me to. Open my heart so that I may be as generous in my response as your first disciples were.
Encountering Christ:
1. Call to Prayer: After receiving news of John’s arrest, Jesus took time to pray and then called his first disciples. He had a mission to accomplish and he focused on two important elements: prayer and communion. He turned to his Father and then invited others to join in his mission. He didn’t waste any time getting started. The time he had was limited and had to be used wisely. The mission we are called to also comes with a sense of urgency, and a call to repentance, prayer, and then action.
2. A New Way of Life: Andrew and Simon were in the midst of their work, casting their nets in the sea. James and John were mending their nets, preparing for the next day’s work. Yet when Jesus called them, they immediately left their work, their former way of life, and their families to follow him. This not only shows us that Jesus must have had a powerful presence, but also that he wants to have a close relationship with us, which can require that we leave certain things behind. He asks a lot from us as his disciples, but the graces that he gives us in return make it all worth it!
3. Called to Action: We know that Jesus called his disciples to himself, and eventually he sent them out to continue the mission he started with them. This is how Jesus continues to work in the world today. He calls us to come to him in prayer, he forms us, he reveals his love to us, and then he sends us out. He launches us in our own vocation, among our own people, and gives us a mission to bring others—our family, children, friends, and coworkers—to him so that he can reveal his love to them as well.
Conversing with Christ: Lord, I want to be an effective apostle, to be the apostle you call me to be. Show me what I need to let go of so I can be more deeply convicted, grow in closer relationship with you, and bring others to know and love you. Thank you, Lord, for entrusting to me the souls you have placed in my life. Be my guide and my strength always.
Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will look at how I am being an intentional apostle. Are there areas where I need to trust more in your plan and less on my own?
