Sept 29, the Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. We are familiar with Michael, the fighter and warrior of God, and with Gabriel, God's messenger to Mary and Zechariah for the birth of their sons.
The Archangel Raphael, "the Medicine of God," appears in the book of Tobit to heal Tobit from his blindness and to protect Tobias in her marriage to Sara who had been tormented by many devils.
In the first reading from Revelation, we see Michael, God's warrior, defeating Satan and his evil hosts. These struggles against evil forces continue today. The Church teaches against evil and lies. Michael helps protect the Church and all those who live for goodness and truth.
In the Gospel reading, at Jesus' call of his first disciples, we hear Jesus assuring us that angels are at God's bidding, "ascending and descending upon the Son of Man." The angels and archangels help us in our life journey to heaven and the kingdom of God. We are urged to call upon them in our daily lives and in time of need.

The Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael
“Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” John 1:51
In Heaven, we will see all things as God sees them. That full perspective will be beyond glorious. And among the many things that will amaze us from the perspective of Heaven is the incredibly powerful ways that the celestial beings participate in the bringing forth of the Kingdom of God. The Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels and Guardian Angels all cooperate with God’s grace in ways similar to how every member of an orchestra works together to produce a single piece of beautiful music. God is the conductor, but these celestial beings participate in the grand fulfillment of the will of God, acting as living instruments of His divine grace.
Today’s feast honors three of the great archangels mentioned in Scripture: Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. The Archangel Michael is described as a protector in the Old Testament Book of Daniel and as one who does battle with satan in the Books of Revelation and Jude. In Revelation, Michael casts satan out of Heaven along with the other fallen angels. The Archangel Gabriel is spoken of also in the Book of Daniel as one who interprets Daniel’s vision. In the New Testament, he is identified as the one who appears to the high priest Zechariah while Zechariah is offering sacrifice in the temple. In that appearance, Gabriel revealed to Zechariah that his wife would have a child, even though she was advanced in years. Gabriel is perhaps best known as the one sent to the Blessed Virgin Mary to reveal to her that she will become the mother of the Savior of the World. Lastly, the Archangel Raphael is referred to in the Old Testament Book of Tobit and is said to have been sent to bring healing to Tobit’s eyes.
As we honor these three archangels, we can be certain that they are three of a countless number of other angelic beings who cooperate with God, bringing forth His grace and His will into our world. Try to imagine that profound truth. Some angelic beings build up the Kingdom of God by devoting their existence to the perpetual worship of God before His throne. The highest of these are the Seraphim. Other angelic beings build up the Kingdom by bringing forth God’s grace and truth to us, intervening in our lives in accord with God’s will. These are especially the guardian angels. The archangels, three of whom we honor today, especially have the task of communicating to us the most important messages and graces from God.
Reflect, today, upon the glorious reality of the whole host of the celestial beings. Specifically call upon the mediation of these three celestial beings whose names we know, Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, as well as upon the mediation of our guardian angels and all others celestial beings. By doing this, we not only entrust ourselves to their loving care, but we also make an act of faith in God by expressing our belief that God has chosen to use these celestial beings to bring forth His Kingdom. By themselves, angels are powerless to act. But since they act only in unison with the will of God, their mediation is as powerful as the grace of God, since it is God Who works through them. Acknowledge them today, call upon their mediation and profess your faith in the glorious work that they do to build up God’s Kingdom.
Most glorious Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, please do come to my aid. I entrust myself, my family, our Church and the entire world to your loving mediation. Please bring forth God’s grace into our lives, communicate God’s Word and His holy Will, protect us from all harm and bring healing to those in need. Angels of God, pray for us. Jesus, I trust in You.

The Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael 2025
Opening Prayer: Lord God, I praise you as the Creator of all things. I look forward to the day in heaven when I can contemplate the wonderful variety of your spiritual creatures. May I be protected this day by Saint Michael, enlightened by Saint Gabriel, and encouraged by Saint Raphael.
Encountering the Word of God
1. Saint Michael as the Guardian of God’s People: As Christians, we profess that God is the Creator of heaven and earth, of all that is visible and invisible. The angels that God created are spiritual creatures, called to glorify God without ceasing and chosen to minister according to God’s plan of salvation for humanity. The good angels surround Christ, their Lord. They serve him especially in the accomplishment of his saving mission to men. The Church venerates the angels who help her on her earthly pilgrimage and protect every human being (see CCC, 351-352). The Old Testament sees Michael as the guardian of God’s people; he is the great prince who has charge of them (see Daniel 10:21; 12:1). “It is no surprise then that he appears [in Revelation 12] to foil the devil’s attempt to make war on the woman (the Church) and Christ. The passage demonstrates that there is a spiritual battle waging behind the scenes of history” (Barber, Coming Soon, 158).
2. Saint Michael’s Battle: Michael the Archangel battles against the devil, who tempted Adam and Eve "out of envy"(Wisdom 2:24). Satan was at first a good angel, made by God; but Satan and other angels fell when they rejected God and his reign (CCC, 392). It was a rejection of God's loving and merciful plan. The fall of the angels seems to have something to do with God's love for man and God's plan to make men share in the life of grace with the angels. Seeing the link between the angelic fall and the Incarnation of the Son of God, the Fathers of the Church thought “that the angels fell because they rejected the notion of a God-Man, whom they would have to worship” (Barber, Coming Soon, 158). Saint Michael, by contrast, accepted God's plan and cast Satan and his angels from heaven, down to the earth.
3. Satan’s Defeat: Satan, the accuser of men, has been thrown down. Through the Cross, Christ is victorious over death, and the Kingdom of God is inaugurated and established. Satan’s defeat happens in several ways. First, Satan is cast down by Michael at the beginning of time. Second, through Christ’s work on earth, Satan is again cast out. “Thus when Christ speaks of His own death, He says, ‘[N]ow shall the ruler of this world be cast out’ (John 12:31)” (Barber, Coming Soon, 160). The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8). Heaven rejoices because Satan has been defeated. “Yet a woe comes upon the earth because Satan is now angry at being cast down and looks to take out his frustration on man. However, his time is ‘short’” (Barber, Coming Soon, 162). Satan is powerful, but he cannot prevent the building up of God's reign. There will come a day when Christ returns in glory with his angels and casts the devil into the lake of fire for eternal punishment (Revelation 20:10). Satan rejected God's love from the beginning; Michael welcomed it. Satan wanted to reign without God; Michael desired to reign with God through service. Satan seeks to frustrate God’s plan; Michael seeks only to accomplish it. Satan is the father of lies and tempts us to sin against God; Michael serves the truth and protects the Church along the way to the definitive establishment of God’s Kingdom.
Conversing with Christ: Lord Jesus, King of the Universe, grant me your powerful grace today to work for your Kingdom, spread your merciful love, and serve my brothers and sisters. May I be inspired today by the example of your archangels to carry out my mission according to your plan of salvation.

The Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael 9-29- 2023
Opening Prayer: Lord, thank you for this precious time pondering your word. Bless me as I seek inspiration for my day.
Encountering Christ:
A True Child of Israel: Our Lord told Nathanael that he was a true child of Israel, that there was “ no duplicity in him.” Jesus was drawing attention to the nobility of Nathanael’s soul. Nathanael was not about impressing others. He wasn’t concerned about appearances. He was authentic, real, honest, and trustworthy. This disposition pleased Jesus. Can we say the same for ourselves? Let us pray for the grace to be true to our Christian convictions, no matter what pressures we undergo.
I See You: “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” Wouldn’t we like to know what went on under that fig tree? Any guess would be mere speculation, but the important thing to know is that the occurrence Jesus referred to was probably quite significant to Nathanael. He seemed overcome with amazement that Jesus knew him more deeply than anyone had ever known him before. Jesus also knows each of us intimately. He knows our deepest intentions when others only see words and actions. He knows our distorted intentions—ones that can corrupt even the most heroic of gestures. And he knows our heart's deepest desires, sometimes before we do. The more we allow God into the most intimate sanctuary of our soul, the greater will be our experience of the wonders he can do in us. It is remarkable that God knows us as he does, even more remarkable that he loves us as he does, and still more remarkable that he calls us into union with him. Our experience of giving God permission to plumb the depths of our hearts opens us to the truth of being deeply, overwhelmingly loved by him and finally to the experience of allowing him to transform us and lead us to union with him.
Angels Accompany Us: We celebrate angels in today’s liturgy. The word “angel” means messenger. In spiritual reality, angels are everywhere. Personal guardian angels are with us throughout our life. Angels are present at each Mass adoring Jesus along with us. Angels are invoked at funerals as we ask them to lead us to paradise (CCC 335). “The whole life of the Church benefits from the mysterious and powerful help of angels (CCC 334). How blessed are we by these mysterious creatures God has given us! How often do we think of them? Welcome their presence in our life? Ask them for favors?
Conversing with Christ: Lord, I can never fully comprehend how well you know and love me. You even gave the church the gift of archangels. I am grateful for all of your spiritual gifts and want only to know you more and more with each passing day.

September 29, 2022- Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Archangels
Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to be like your disciple Nathanael, having no duplicity in me. Instill in me a love for the truth, so that, in large ways and small, I may always be truthful with those around me. Amen.
Encountering Christ:
1. Where Do We Rest?: Scripture tells us that Nathanael had been spotted by Christ under a fig tree. What was he doing there? Praying? Enjoying nature? Having some alone time? In our electronic age, “rest” never seems to happen. There is always one more post, email, tweet, text, video, or comment. When was the last time we took a moment to find a quiet spot, “under a fig tree,” where perhaps the Lord can touch our heart in a new way?
2. A Heart That Is Pure: This encounter with Nathanael is but one example of how Jesus treats his followers as individuals. He knows each of us by name and what is in our hearts. As Psalm 139 says, “Lord, you have probed me, you know me: you know when I sit and stand; you understand my thoughts from afar…Even before a word is on my tongue, Lord, you know it all. Behind and before you encircle me and rest your hand upon me.” Since Our Lord knows all of our thoughts, including those that may be keeping our heart from being pure like Nathanael’s, let us thoroughly examine conscience, looking for attachments that may be drawing us away from our all-knowing, all-loving God. Jesus is ready and waiting to purify us through the sacrament of Reconciliation.
3. Why Do We Believe?: Nathanael’s spontaneous burst of faith must have delighted Jesus. Jesus promised that Nathanael would “see greater things than this.” Nathanael’s faith would need strengthening as he grew from a new convert to an Apostle martyred for his belief in Jesus. Each of us has had moments of spontaneity when faith seemed easy as we followed the Way. But, in difficult times, our faith can be tested. Why do we continue to follow Christ—out of love, fear, and habit?
Conversing with Christ: Jesus, strengthen my faith! I want to be a diligent worker, full of faith, and ready for any trial. I know my heart is not pure, but I trust your grace to transform me continually.
