Mẹ Người nói với những người giúp việc: "Hễ Người bảo gì, phải làm theo" (Jn 2:5)
Câu nói ngắn gọn này, được lồng vào trong câu chuyện trong tiệc cưới ở Cana, cho chúng ta nhiều điều suy ngẫm. Đó là mệnh lệnh yêu thương, được Đức Mẹ nói với những người hầu bàn trong tiệc cưới. Và mặc dù những lời của Mẹ ban đầu được nói với những người hầu đó để mang lại phép lạ đầu tiên và dấu hiệu về thần tính của Chúa Giêsu, chúng ta có thể chắc chắn rằng Đức Mẹ cũng nói những điều đó cho mỗi người chúng ta. “Hãy làm bất cứ điều gì Người nói với chúng con” Thật là một mệnh lệnh đẹp đẽ của tình yêu! Khi chúng ta nghe những lời này nói với chúng ta, chúng ta phải vâng nghe những lời này như sự hướng dẫn hoàn hảo và liên tục của Đức Mẹ. Vì vậy, trong cuộc sống, chúng ta thường làm những gì chúng ta muốn làm. Chúng ta thường hay bị lôi kéo đến tới những thứ đam mê và ham muốn rối loạn của chúng ta. Chúng ta tranh đấu với sự ích kỷ và thường đưa ra những lựa chọn sai lầm cho cuộc sống của mình. Đây là một thực tế đơn giản của tội lỗi mà chúng ta phải chiến đấu với mỗi ngày. Nhưng nếu chúng ta biết lắng nghe lời Đức Mẹ, nghe như những lời từ trái tim Mẹ nói với chúng ta, thì chúng ta sẽ có một hướng đi mới trong cuộc đời.
Muốn làm theo ý Chúa trước tiên đòi hỏi chúng ta phải biết lắng nghe tiếng Chúa. Chúng ta phải lắng nghe Chúa nói với chúng ta. Chúng ta phải làm thế nào để có thể làm được điều này? Trong tâm trí chúng ta thường tràn ngập nhiều suy nghĩ và chúng ta dễ bị ảnh hưởng bởi nhiều thứ. Đôi khi, trong lòng của chúng ta đang chứa chấp không những chỉ có những thứ đam mê, cảm giác và cảm xúc rối loạn làm chúng ta bối rối, mà còn có rất nhiều tiếng nói đa dạng và khó hiểu trong chính thế giới của chúng ta. Chúng ta bị ảnh hưởng bởi những điều tốt hay xấu mà chúng ta gặp hàng ngày, bởi các phương tiện truyền thông đại chúng, bởi những điều chúng ta đọc hoặc xem, và thậm chí bởi chính tên ác quỷ khi hắn cám dỗ chúng ta ngày này qua ngày khác. Nếu mỗi ngày chúng ta có thể cố gắng loại bỏ những tiếng nói sai lạc trong cuộc sống của mình và biết lắng nghe tiếng nói đơn sơ, rõ ràng và sâu sắc của Thiên Chúa, thì chúng ta đã có thể thực hiện được bước đầu tiên tốt đẹp. Nhưng từ đó, chúng ta cần phải “làm” điều Chúa muốn nơi chúng ta. Nghe tiếng Chúa nói có thể đã là khó, nhưng để làm những gì chúng ta nghe từ nơi Chúa có thể còn khó hơn. Người ta nói rằng con đường dẫn đến địa ngục được lát bằng những ý định tốt. Mục đích tốt thôi là chưa đủ. Làm theo ý muốn của Thiên Chúa với tất cả sức lực của chúng ta là câu trả lời đúng.
Hôm nay, chúng ta hãy suy ngẫm về câu hỏi kép này. Thứ nhất, chúng ta  có nghe được những gì Chúa đòi hỏi nơi chúng ta mỗi ngày không, hay la chúng ta dang bị lầm lạc và bị ảnh hưởng bởi nhiều tiếng nói khác? Thứ hai, chúng ta thực hiện những tốt điều mà chúng ta biết Chúa đòi hỏi ở chúng ta như thế nào? “Hãy làm bất cứ điều gì Chúa nói với chúng ta ” Hãy suy ngẫm cụm từ này và lắng nghe nó như một mệnh lệnh yêu thương thực sự từ nới Đức Mẹ của chúng ta.
Lạy Mẹ yêu dấu nhất, xin hãy nói với chúng con những lời này mỗi ngày. Khi Mẹ làm như vậy, xin Mẹ cũng hãy cầu nguyện cho chúng con để chúng con có thể lắng nghe tất cả những gì Con của Mẹ mong muốn nơi chúng con và vâng theo tiếng Ngài bằng cả tấm lòng. Chúng con xin cảm ơn Mẹ vì lời “Xin vâng” trọn vẹn và sự vâng lời Chúa trong mọi sự. Xin cho chúng con biết noi gương Chúa mỗi ngày. Lạy Mẹ Maria, xin cầu cho chúng con. Chúa ơi, con tin vào Ngài.
 
January 7, when before Epiphany
His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.” John 2:5
This short phrase, inserted within the story of the Wedding Feast of Cana, gives us much to ponder. It is a command of love, spoken by our Blessed Mother to the servants at the wedding. And though her words were initially spoken to those servants so as to bring forth the first miracle and sign of Jesus’ divinity, we can be certain that our Blessed Mother also speaks them to each one of us.
“Do whatever he tells you.” What a beautiful command of love! When we hear these words spoken to us, we must hear them as our Blessed Mother’s perfect and ongoing guidance. So often in life we do what we want to do. We are drawn here or there by our passions and disordered desires. We struggle with being selfish and often make poor choices for our lives. This is the simple reality of sin that we struggle with every day. But if we can heed the Blessed Mother’s words, hearing them as words spoken from her heart to ours, then we will have a new direction in life.
Doing the will of God first requires that we listen to the voice of God. We must listen to our Lord speak to us. How well do you do this? Our minds are often flooded with many thoughts, and we are easily influenced by many things. Not only do our disordered passions, feelings and emotions confuse us at times, but there are so many varied and confusing voices within our world itself. We are influenced by those we encounter every day for good or ill, by the mass media, by the things we read or watch, and even by the evil one himself as he tempts us day in and day out.
If we can daily strive to eliminate the many misleading voices within our lives and tune in to the simple, clear and profound voice of God, then we have taken a good first step. But from there, we need to “do” that which God asks of us. Hearing God speak can be difficult, but doing what we hear from God can be even more difficult. It has been said that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Good intentions are not enough. Doing God’s will with all our might is the answer.
Reflect, today, upon this twofold question. First, am I able to hear what God asks of me each and every day, or am I misled and influenced by many other voices? Second, how well do I put into action that which I know God asks of me? “Do whatever he tells you.” Ponder this phrase and hear it as a true command of love from our Blessed Mother.
Dearest Mother, please speak these words to me every day. As you do, please pray for me that I may listen to all that your Son asks of me and obey His voice with my whole heart. Thank you for your perfect “Yes” and your obedience to God in all things. May I learn to more fully imitate you every day. Mother Mary, pray for us. Jesus, I trust in You.

Introductory Prayer: My Jesus I believe in you. Your goodness overflows: I long to imitate you more in my life so that others can catch a glimpse of you shining through me. I want to do whatever you tell me. I know this moment of prayer in my day is a chance for an intimate dialogue with you, so here I am: ready to listen and respond with an active faith, hope and love.
Petition: Lord, give me ears to hear your words to me. Give me the faith and trust to act on them.
1. They Have No Wine: Before anyone else, Mary sees the potentially embarrassing situation that faces the families of the bride and groom. She was sitting next to Jesus so she could say to him quietly, mother to son, “They have no wine.” She asks this of him even though his public life is not yet launched. Mary is constantly interceding before her Divine Son on behalf of her children. How often do I turn to her for a favor? Do I realize that there is no greater intercessor in heaven than our Blessed Mother?
2. Do Whatever He Tells You: At his mother’s words, Jesus’ public ministry is launched. Mary’s faith-filled words to the servers are repeated to me today, “Do whatever he tells you.” The servers are given most unusual instructions. They are told by Jesus to fill jars used for the ritual cleansing of feet with water and then draw some out to be taken to the headwaiter to taste. Surely they must fear the angry reaction of their boss, or mockery from the guests. Sometimes when Jesus tells us to speak up for him in unfriendly territory, our human respect and fear of rejection can paralyze us. When was the last time I experienced this fear? Did I overcome it with faith and speak up for the Lord? Or did I silently succumb to the fear of rejection or mockery?
3. Coworker in the Redemption: Jesus addresses his mother as “Woman,” signifying that she is the new Eve who, together with her Divine Son, will crush the Serpent’s head, releasing human beings from the bondage of sin. This moment launches a holy partnership, a mutual acceptance of sacrifice for the salvation of souls, for so the Heavenly Father has willed it. Do we comprehend Mary’s love for each of us? She willingly sacrificed her beloved Son for our redemption, cooperating with him, uniting herself to him every step of the way until she stood beneath the cross. The Holy Eucharist foreshadowed by the feast of Cana is a gift of both Christ and our Lady. Let us ask Mary to purify our hearts for the reception of this Most Holy Sacrament.
Conversation with Christ: Lord Jesus, just as your Mother did at Cana, you ask us to have the same eye for detail as we seek to charitably look after the needs of others. Help me to forget about myself, so that I can quickly and efficiently do whatever you ask of me. Help me to trust in your guidance and love. Mother Mary, teach me to welcome sacrifice as you did, so I too can be faithful and follow Jesus to the cross and be a coworker in the redemption.
Resolution: I will overcome my hesitancy and longing for human respect in order to share my faith with someone today.
