Suy Niệm Tin Mừng Thứ Ba Tuần 23 TN - Luke 6:12-19, 2019

Trong bài đọc thứ nhất, thánh Phaolô nhắc nhở chúng ta phải trung thành với những sứ điệp trong Tin Mừng, với những lời giáo huấn của Chúa Jêsus mà thánh Phaolô và các tông đồ đã rao giảng cho thế giới.

Trong bài Tin Mừng hôm nay, chúng ta thấy sau một đêm dài cầu nguyện, Chúa Giêsu chọn mười hai tông đồ để làm bạn đồng hành thân thiết với Ngài, và sau cuộc đời của Ngài trong thế giới này, Họ sẽ là nhữnh người lãnh đạo, dẫn dắt Giáo hội của Ngài. Họ chỉ là những người bình dân, quê mùa và chất phát, họ chỉ là dân đánh cá, là bhững người thu thuế. Hai người trong số đã phản bội Ngài, một người chối bỏ Ngài trước mặt những người đầy tớ của những thượng tế, còn người kia thì phản bội, bán Ngài cho các thầy thượng tế và các kỳ lão Do thái với giá 30 đồng và họ đã giết Ngài. Còn lại những người khác thì cũng đã bỏ Ngài chạy trốn ngay trong lúc Ngài bị bắt, bị nạn và trong lúc Ngài phải chịu đau khổ nhất. Khi Ngài bị xỉ nhục và phải chết trên thập giá chẳng có ai ến với Ngài ngoại trừ những người đàn bà một người môn đệ Ngài yêu..

Tuy nhiên bằng cách nào đó, họ vẫn một lòng tin tưởng và họ tìm cách củng niềm tin vào nơi Ngài. Và với quyền năng của Chúa Thánh Thần, họ đã khiến ngọn lửa Tin Mừng Chúa Kitô được bùng cháy lên trên toàn thế giới. Và tất cả mọi người trong họ (ngoại trừ một người, đó là người được Chúa yêu) cũng đã phải chíu những cực hình như Chúa và chết tử đạo vì Tin Mừng vì họ muốn chứng tỏ tình yêu của họ đối với Chúa Giêsu, Đấng Cứu Thế.

Xin Chúa cho chúng ta là những người yêu mến Chúa biết vững tin và trung thành theo Chúa Kitô một cách đích thực. Nguyện cho Giáo Hội của Chúa Kitô luôn có những người kế nhiệm Thánh Phêrô biết trung tín và đáng tin cậy như các thánh Tông Đồ khi xưa đã làm là đem Tin Mừng của Chúa Kitô đến với mọi người.

REFLECTION 2019

In the first reading Paul reminds us to remain faithful to the Gospel message, to the teachings of Jesus which Paul and the apostles preached to the world.

In the Gospel reading, after a night of prayer, Jesus names the twelve apostles, ordinary men he has called and chosen to be his close companions and co-workers and who would, after his life on earth, lead his Church. They were ordinary people: a few fishermen and their friends, a tax collector, devout Israelites. Two would betray him, one before simple maid-servants, the other would betray him to his death before Jewish religious leaders for thirty pieces of silver. Except for one, all would abandon him at his trial and death.

Yet somehow they remained his faithful followers. And with the power of the Holy Spirit set the world on fire. All, except for one, died martyrs' deaths in witness to their love for Christ.

May we be faithful and loving followers of Christ. May the Church always have faithful and trustworthy successors of the Apostles as leaders of the Church.

Tuesday 23rd Ordinary Times

Opening Prayer: Come Holy Spirit, open my heart and mind to encounter your truth. Imprint your truth and love into my heart so that I can continue the work of your Apostles in your Kingdom here on earth.

Encountering Christ:

1. Called to Be Apostles: Jesus had been gone all night long, and when he returned in the morning, he “called his disciples to himself.” Jesus invited all who were there to hear the decisions he had made in prayer. Then he called each of the Twelve to apostleship by name. One by one, they stepped forward, accepting the offer to build up the Kingdom of God in a unique and powerful way. These were called to great service, a service of apostleship, to leadership. Like the Apostles, each of us has a unique vocation to follow him as his apostle of peace, his ambassador in the world today (2 Corinthians 5:20).

2. The Twelve: The number twelve is significant in our Judeo-Christian tradition. For example, there were twelve tribes of Israel, symbolizing God’s power and the completeness of Israel’s government (1 Kings 4:7). Speaking of the Twelve Apostles, St. Augustine wrote, “Twelve is a sacred number…These twelve were to make known the Trinity [three persons] throughout the whole world—that is, throughout the four corners of the world. That is the reason of the three times four” (Tractates on the Gospel of John). This Gospel verse contains foreshadowing of Judas’s betrayal, which reduced the Twelve to the Eleven for a time. But even then, Peter knew that one would need to replace him to complete the Twelve, and the Holy Spirit directed them to choose Matthias to replace Judas (see Acts 1:12-26). The government in Christ’s Kingdom had to become complete again. Do we see ourselves as subjects of Christ the King, or are we self-reliant? How can we grow in trust and submission to Our Lord, who governs us through his Church?

3. Kingdom of Mercy: In this Gospel passage, Luke shows that the Kingdom of Christ has come. Christ established his majestic government of Apostles; he went out to encounter the world filled with sickness and tormented souls. He brought the people his peace and healing through his power and glory. The world thinks of status and prestige as its marks of royalty, but Christ turned that idea upside down and showed that real power and majesty are manifested through works of mercy. His Kingdom shall come this way: full of hesed, God’s merciful love. We are called to share God’s merciful love with whomever we meet.

Conversing with Christ: Jesus, I adore you as my Lord, my God, and my King. I am sorry for the times when I have rejected your authority through my sins. Thank you for establishing your Kingdom here on earth. Please give me the fortitude to be your apostle and extend your mercy, compassion, and love reign. Christ our King, thy Kingdom come!

Resolution: Lord, today, by your grace, I will pray this scriptural decade of the rosary, focusing on the Proclamation of the Kingdom: USCCB Third Luminous Mystery.

Trong bài Tin Mừng, chúng ta thấy rất nhiều người Do thái kéo đến để nghe lời giảng dạy của Chúa Giêsu và để được chữa lành tất cả các tật bệnh về thể xác cũng như bệnh tinh thần. Thế giới của chúng ta hôm nay thực sự là rất cần một vị cứu tinh như Chúa Giêsu. Trong xã hội hôm nay, chúng ta thấy rất nhiều những người ham thích danh vọng, hưởng thụ, tham lam, hận thù, vv và họ không bao giờ hài lòng với những gì mình có. Họ chẳng bao ngại cho dù họ có phải làm nô lệ cho ma quỷ và xác thịt, miễn sao họ thoả mãn được cái tham vọng hay dục vọng của họ. Một cách sâu sắc hơn, họ đang tìm kiếm sự giải phóng và họ biết có ai đó đang thực sự quan tâm đến họ. Đó là cách mà người Do Thái trong phúc âm đã cảm thấy và họ đều vây quanh Chúa Giêsu.

Họ nghỉ là Chúa Giêsu thực sự có thể giải quyết những vấn đề nghiêm trọng của con người. Như chúng ta thấy các chính trị gia có thể sẽ làm cho vấn đề trở nên tồi tệ hơn, trừ khi họ thực sự là người Kitô hữu. Những nhà tâm lý học chỉ có thể chữa trị bệnh tâm ký cho người bệnh, nhưng cũng chỉ có giới hạn, trừ khi họ dẫn đưa bệnh nhân của họ đến với Đấng Chữa Lành là Thiên Chúa. Con người thường hay tìm đến các loại người để giải quyết vấn đề của họ chỉ đến với Thiên Chúa mỗi khi họ đang tuyệt vọng. Nhưng Chúa Giêsu phải là lựa chọn đầu tiên của chúng ta, đặc biệt là nếu vấn đề là tình cảm, tinh thần hoặc tâm lý. Ngài là người thầy thuốc tốt và là người bạn thân tốt nhất, và luôn hướng dẫn và giúp đỡ của tất cả chúng ta.

Reflection

In the gospel, we see how so many people came to listen to Jesus' words and to be healed of their physical and spiritual ailments. Our world is truly in need of a savior. We see people consumed by greed, hatred, anger, lust, etc. and they are not happy being enslaved by the devil. Deep down they are looking for a liberator and they know when someone truly cares for them. That is how the Jews in the gospel must have felt so they all crowded around Jesus. It is only Jesus who can truly solve the serious problems of man. Politicians, unless they are truly Christians, will make matters worse. Psychologists can only do so much unless they lead their patients to the Divine Healer. People often turn to all kinds of problem solvers and as a last recourse, ask God's help when they are desperate. But Jesus should be our first option, especially if the problem is emotional, spiritual or psychological. He is the best teacher, guide, friend and helper of us all.
