 Suy Niệm Thứ Hai 26 Thường Niên

Để "trở nên như trẻ em" giống như bài Tin Mừng hôm nay không có nghĩa là chúng ta thiếu hiểu biết và yếu đuối, bất lực và dễ tin. Nhưng để "trở nên giống như trẻ em" có nghĩa là chúng ta phải trở nên nhỏ bé như các em nhỏ hoàn toàn phụ thuộc vào cha mẹ và các đấng bậc lớn tuổi trong mối quan hệ của chúng ta với Chúa Cha trên trời. Có nghĩa là chúng ta phải trở nên thấp bé ngây thơ, "vô tội" tin tưởng, vâng phục Chúa Cha của chúng ta trên trời cũng giống nhơ các em nhỏ lệ thuộc vào cha mẹ. Có ghĩa là chúng ta phải quên đi niềm tự hào, sự kiêu ngạo và quá tự tin vào bản thân mình mà phải đặt niềm tin của chúng ta vào Thiên Chúa.

Liệu chúng ta có "trở nên giống như những trẻ em" trước mặt Thiên Chúa là Cha của chúng ta trên trời? Liệu chúng ta có thể tin tưởng và phó thác hoàn toàn trong tay Chúa Cha?, Ngài sẽ hướng dẫn và chăm sóc chúng ta như Thiên Chúa trang phục, điểm tô cho hoa cỏ trên đồng cỏ,“Thiên Chúa sẽ mặc những gì cho chúng ta?" (Mt 6, 30) " Vậy nếu anh em vốn là những kẻ xấu mà còn biết cho con cái mình những của tốt lành, phương chi Cha anh em, Đấng ngự trên trời, lại không ban những của tốt lành cho những kẻ kêu xin Người sao?!" (Mt 7: 11)

REFLECTION

To "become like little children" in the Gospel reading does not mean to be ignorant and weak, helpless and gullible. To "become like little children" means to be little children totally dependent on their parents and elders in our relationship with our heavenly Father. It means we should be "innocent," with the pure innocence of little children, trusting, obedient and dependent on our Father in heaven in the way of little children with their parents. It means we somehow let go of our pride, arrogance and complete confidence in ourselves.

In the first reading Yahweh, God of Israel, faithful to his covenant, reiterates his love for Israel and promises their return to Jerusalem, "I am going to save my people ... They will be my people and I shall be their God."

Are we able to "become like little children" before our heavenly Father? Are we able to have complete trust and confidence that our heavenly Father will take care of us? "If God so clothes the grass in the field which blooms today and is to be burned tomorrow in an oven, how much more will he clothe you?" (Mt 6: 30) "As bad as you are, you know how to give good things to your children. How much more, then, will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him!" (Mt 7: 11)

Monday 26th Ordinary Time

Opening Prayer: Lord, hold open my heart that I may receive you every day through your word. Help me to approach the throne of your grace worthily, free from serious sin, and with the pure heart of a child. Amen.

Encountering Christ:

1. Status and Its Symbols: Remember the context of this passage: the disciples were arguing about which of them was the greatest. Recall that each of these men was personally selected by Christ himself, committed to a new path of following the Lord. What a comforting reminder that no matter how blessed we have been or how much we believe ourselves to be devoted Christians, there will always (because of original sin) be a corner of our souls that is tempted to compare ourselves with others. Jesus knows, he sees, and he loves us anyway. Our sinful tendencies don’t disqualify us from fulfilling our God-given mission as long as we stay close to Jesus.

2. Welcoming the Least: Jesus’ answer to the squabbling disciples was to show them a child. The one whose “status” God values most is the “least” among us. We are called to provide for and care for all those “least”: the children, the poor, the elderly, and the sick. We do this best when we empty ourselves of our pride and our ego, and then turn our hearts to the Lord. He is then free to use our hands, feet, voice–our whole selves–to serve those in need.

3. Forming Alliances: This passage could be summarized thus: the disciples bickered about which of them was the greatest; Jesus reminded them their duty was to the least; then John changed the subject (so he thought) and said, “We saw another guy trying to be as great as us, but we put a stop to that!” Jesus brought John (and us) right back to the topic at hand—our Christian obligation is to humbly serve the poor and the least among us. And in this effort, we are right to welcome assistance, for whoever is not against us is for us.

Conversing with Christ: Jesus, you showed me a child and asked me to receive him in your name. Help me to see those least among us as those most in need of our compassion and charity. By your grace, help me seek the help I may need to minister to those you would have me care for.

Resolution: Lord, today, by your grace, I will, in some small way, die to myself in humility and obedience and seek ways to assist those in need.

Reflection:

Our gospel reading today follows key events in our Lord's public ministry: Peter's profession of faith in him as the Messiah of God, his prediction of his suffering, death and resurrection and his transfiguration with Moses and Elijah before the apostles Peter, James and John.

It is in this context that Jesus finds his disciples arguing "about which of them was the greatest." And Jesus educates them in God's value system by bringing in a little child before them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name, welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me, welcomes the one who sent me. And listen: the one who is found to be the least among you all, is the one who is the greatest."

In God's value system, the least is the greatest. For "fortunate are those who have the spirit of the poor. . . those who mourn. . . the gentle. . . those who hunger and thirst for . . . those who are persecuted for the cause of justice." (Mt 5: 3 – 10)

The Son of God "emptied himself, taking the nature of a servant, made in human likeness. . . humbled himself by being obedient to death, death on the cross. That is why God exalted him and gave him the Name which outshines all names." (Phil 2: 7 – 9)

The following of Jesus is the following of the humble Suffering Servant, "If you want to follow me, deny yourself take up your cross and follow me." (Mk 8: 34)
