Tin mừng hôm nay, cho chúng ta đã nghe những lời tiên tri của Chúa Giêsu khi Ngài phán rằng Ngài là Bánh Hằng Sống từ trời xuống. Qua những lời này, Chúa Giêsu đã chuẩn bị cho các chúng ta, những người đã tin vào Ngài được vào tham dự Bữa Tiệc Ly. Hôm nay Ngài giới thiệu cho chúng ta Bí tích Thánh Thể của Giáo Hội Công giáo.
Nhiều người không tin Chúa Giêsu Và lời Chúa về Bánh Hằng Sống, vì thế họ đã phàn nàn, họ bàn tán với nhau và tự hỏi làm sao Chúa Giêsu có thể từ Trời xuống khi họ biết rằng chính cha đẻ của Ngài là ông Giuse và mẹ của Ngài là bà Maria. Chính vì thế mà nhiều người đã không tin vào Chúa vì họ không chịu lắng nghe những gì mà Chúa Giêsu đang tỏ bày và tiết lộ cho họ. Con người có đầu óc trần tục tối tăm của họ, Người Do thái tìm cách thách thức mọi lời Chúa Giêsu nói hơn là chịu khó lắng nghe và suy ngẫm để hấp thụ lời Chúa. Vì sự chai cứng của lòng trí và con tim, họ không được giải thoát được tinh thần, và điều này đã ngăn cản họ nhận thức được sự thật.
Ngày nay cũng vậy, một số người trong chúng ta đã không nghe và không chấp nhận những lời dạy nào của Giáo hội Công giáo vì họ không lắng nghe hay không muốn nghe. Họ đang đặt tất cả sức lực của mình để thách thức mọi lời nói, mọi thẩm quyền, giáo lý của hội thánh v.v ... thay vì lắng nghe tiếng của Chúa Thánh Thần ngự trị, Đấng đã được sai đến để dạy dỗ và hướng dẫn họ. Đôi khi chúng ta cần phải im lặng và lắng nghe. Sau đó, chúng ta nên dành thời giờ để cầu nguyện và suy ngẫm về những gì chúng ta đã nghe, để cho ân sủng của Chúa Thánh Thần soi sáng tâm hồn chúng ta để chúng ta có thể nhìn thấy ánh sáng trong Thánh Thần.
Trong các bài Tin Mừng trước, Chúa Giêsu đã phán: "Không ai cũng có thể đến với Ta nếu không được Cha, Ðấng đã sai ta lôi kéo." Như đã nói trước đây, chính bởi ân sủng của Thiên Chúa cha trên Trời mà chúng ta được lôi kéo đến với Chúa Giêsu qua Chúa Thần ngự trị, Đấng dạy dỗ và hướng dẫn chúng ta. Những ai được lôi kéo đến với Chúa Giêsu, những ai lắng nghe lời dạy của Ngài, những ai tin vào Ngài và sống đức tin Kito giáo của họ trong Đấng Cứu Thế, thì Ngài sẽ khiến họ được sống lại vào ngày sau hết. Chúa Giêsu phán: “Hễ ai nghe và học nơi Cha, thì đến cùng ta”. Những ai lắng nghe trái tim mình, món quà miễn phí mà họ đã lãnh nhận trong Bí tích Thánh Tẩy, họ nghe thấy tiếng Chúa gọi và họ hướng về Chúa Giêsu. Vì không ai có thể đi đến cùng Cha, trừ khi họ đi qua Chúa Con, Đức Chúa Giêsu Kitô.
Thần Khí của Thiên Chúa lôi kéo chúng ta đến với Chúa Cha. Nhờ ân sủng của Chúa Cha, đức tin của chúng ta được thiết lập vào Sự Thật. Chúng ta tin vào Chúa Giêsu Kitô là Đấng Cứu Rỗi của chúng ta. Chúng ta tin vào sự sống lại. Chúng ta tin rằng Đức Giêsu Kitô sẽ phục sinh thân xác đã chết của chúng ta vào ngày cuối cùng để chúng ta cũng có thể được biến đổi một cách vinh hiển theo hình ảnh của Ngài. Tất cả những gì Thiên Chúa làm cho chúng ta đều được hoàn thành bởi sự tham dự của cả Ba Sự Hiện Diện Thiêng Liêng của Chúa Ba Ngôi Chí Thánh.
Chúa Giêsu nói rằng không ai đã thấy Cha ngoại trừ Đấng đến từ Thiên Chúa. Ngài đã thấy Chúa Cha. Không ai đã từng thấy Cha vì Cha là đấng vô hình. [Rom. 1:20; Cô-lô-se 1:15; 1 Tim. 1:17; Heb. 11:27]
Giáo hội Công giáo dạy chúng ta, phải nhớ lại rằng Thiên Chúa vượt qua sự phân biệt giữa con người giữa các giới tính. Người không phải là đàn ông cũng không phải đàn bà: Người là Thiên Chúa." (CCC. # 239) Chính Thiên Chúa đã phán, "Ta là Thiên Chúa và không có một Thiên Chúa nào khác." [Hô. 11: 9] Sự Hiện diện Thiêng liêng của Thiên Chúa là Cha như Ngài đã được bày tỏ cho chúng ta qua Chúa Giêsu Kitô. Giáo Hội Công Giáo cho biết thêm, " Sự thanh tẩy tâm hồn liên quan đến những hình ảnh về người cha hoặc người mẹ, phát sinh do kinh nghiệm bản thân hoặc văn hóa, làm ảnh hưởng đến tương quan giữa chúng ta với Thiên Chúa. Thiên Chúa, Cha chúng ta, siêu việt trên mọi phạm trù của thế giới thụ tạo. Đem những ý niệm của chúng ta trong vấn đề này để gán cho Thiên Chúa hoặc để chống lại Ngài, là tạo ra các ngẫu tượng để tôn thờ hoặc để hạ bệ. "(CCC. # 2779). Thiên Chúa Cha đã bày tỏ chính Ngài qua Chúa Giêsu Kitô. Như Chúa Giêsu đã nói, "Nếu các ngươi biết Ta, thì cũng sẽ biết Cha Ta. Từ nay các ngươi biết Ngài và đã thấy Ngài." [Jn. 14: 6-7]
Chúa phán: “Ta là Bánh hằng Sống. Ai tin Ngài thì được sự sống đời đời. Trong khi tổ tiên của thời Cựu ước ăn ma-na trong đồng vắng, tất cả đều chết. Nhưng những ai ăn Bánh từ Trời xuống, thì sẽ được sống đời đời. Và Bánh mà Ngài ban là thịt Ngài cho sự sống của thế gian. Những lời này lặp lại toàn bộ mầu nhiệm Bí tích Thánh Thể. Chúa Jêsus là Thiên Chúa! Nơi Ngài ngự trong thân thể là sự trọn vẹn của Thiên Chúa Ba Ngôi Chí Thánh là Chúa Cha, Chúa Con và Chúa Thánh Thần.
Trong Thánh lễ, linh mục chủ tế sẽ đọc lời nguyện truyền phép bánh và rượu. Vào lúc đó, bánh và rược sẽ được biến đổi thành Mình và Máu Chúa Kitô. Vào lúc đó, Thiên Chúa sẽ hiện diện với chúng ta qua Bí tích Thánh Thể. Trong Bánh và Rượu được thánh hiến sẽ thể hiện sự trọn vẹn của Thiên Chúa, cả Ba Sự Hiện Diện Thiêng Liêng của Ba Ngôi Chí Thánh.
Khi chúng ta lãnh nhận Chúa Thánh Thể, chúng ta sẽ nhận được Sự Hiện Diện Thiêng Liêng của Chúa Ba Ngôi, Chúa Cha, Chúa Con và Chúa Thánh Thần trong tâm hồn chúng ta.
Anh chị em thân mến, hãy tin vào Lời của Chúa Giêsu. Hãy tin rằng Bí tích Thánh Thể là Bánh Hằng Sống. Không có Thánh Thể, chúng ta không có cuộc sống trong chúng ta. Những ai tin vào lời của Chúa Giêsu, kiên trì với đức tin sống động của mình, và những người lãnh nhận các Bí tích của Giáo hội, họ đang trên đường đến với sự sống đời đời trong Nước của Thiên Chúa. Vì Bí tích Rửa tội ban cho chúng ta phần đầu tiên là sự tạo thành mới của hạt giống Thiên Chúa . Bí Tích Thanh Tẩy làm cho chúng ta trở nên công bình trong mắt Thiên Chúa. Nếu chúng ta phạm tội, hãy tìm đến Bí tích Giải tội để phục hồi sự công bình của chúng ta. Một khi chúng ta đã công chính trở lại, chúng ta hãy tiếp cận với Bí tích Thánh Thể, Bánh Hằng Sống bảo đảm sự cứu rỗi của chúng ta trong Chúa Kitô!
Lạy Chúa Giêsu, Chúa đến với chúng con trong Bí tích Thánh Thể và Chúa đến với chúng con trong những giây phút cầu nguyện này. Chúng con biết rằng chính Thiên Chúa Cha đã lôi kéo chúng con đến với Chúa. Xin giúp chúng con đổi mới niềm tin của chúng con đối với Chúa. Chúa biết những sự nghi ngờ và thử thách của chúng con. Tuy nhiên, thay vì nuôi dưỡng chúng trong lòng, chúng con đặt tất cả những yếu đuối, hồ nghi thử thách này trước mặt Chúa vì chúng con biết rằng Chúa muốn chúng con làm như thế và Chúa đang chờ đợi chúng con. Chúa muốn mang lại sự sống cho chúng con bằng cách ban cho chúng con Mình và Máu của chính Chúa. Xin Chúa giúp chúng con nhận được ân sủng của Chúa trong mỗi giây phút cầu nguyện, và trong mỗi lần rước lấy Mình và Máu Thánh Chúa.
19th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Good morning! On this Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, how pleased the Lord must be with our beautiful gathering for the purpose of feeding our souls with the Word of God and the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Feeding our souls, that is the message that shines forth from the Scripture readings that we have just heard.
Reviewing today's First Reading from the First Book of Kings, [1 Kgs. 19:4-8] when applying a spiritual approach, we can perceive that much of what was said is symbolic. Elijah had gone a day's journey into the wilderness and he was tired. His journey into the wilderness can be perceived as someone who is aimlessly wondering on earth. He has no purpose in life. He does not know why he is living. He perceives life as being born and then dying. It is a life without hope. Elijah sat under a solitary broom tree and asked that he might die. He had enough of life, realizing that he was no better than his ancestors. He asked God to take his life. Then he fell asleep. From this passage, it can be perceived to spiritually mean that he who has no hope has no purpose in life. He will easily give up, accepting death as his way of ending the miseries of the world. He knows that his human nature is weak. The pleasures of the world will not last. All his wealth will come to an end. Why accumulate treasures if they will all turn to dust once one is gone? In his mind, he says to himself, 'If there is a God, end it all here and now! No more suffering!' Going to sleep is symbolic of the end of one's walk in the darkness. Suddenly, one is touched by the grace of God. As an angel touched Elijah and told him to eat the cake baked on hot stones and to drink from the jar of water, the one who experiences a spiritual awakening learns of the living hope in Jesus Christ. He learns of the Bread of Life that is represented by the cake baked on hot stones. He learns of the living water, the Holy Spirit, that is represented by the jar of water. He is told to eat and drink. Receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist and the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit!
Having eaten, Elijah laid down again to sleep. This is symbolic of relapse into sin. Once more, the sinners walk in the darkness. A second time, the angel of the Lord touched Elijah, this being symbolic of the grace of God touching the heart of the sinner a second time. Once more, the sinner is told to eat and drink, otherwise the journey will be too much for him. As Elijah did, the sinner gets up and returns to the Church Sacraments, allowing the indwelling Holy Spirit to continue to sanctify Him in Christ.
By persevering in the living faith through the Bread of Life, such being pleasing in the eyes of the Lord, the faithful one is no longer grieving the Holy Spirit. Now, he has the strength to go on for forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mountain of God. The forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mountain of God is symbolic of a forty-year journey towards the eternal Kingdom of God. In those days, the people did not enjoy the medical benefits that we enjoy today. As such, living for forty years was the average life span of a person. By persevering in his living faith for all those years, surely, he has obtained his salvation in Christ, inheriting the eternal promises of God the Father.
During today's Second Reading from the Letter to the Ephesians, we heard St. Paul say, "Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption." Christ Himself declared that He was marked with His Father's seal. [Jn. 6:27] Christians are also marked with a seal: 'It is God who establishes us with you in Christ and has commissioned us; He has put His seal on us and given us His Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.' [2 Cor. 1:21-2; Eph. 1:13, 4, 30] This seal of the Holy Spirit marks our total belonging to Christ, our enrollment in his service for ever, as well as the promise of divine protection in the great eschatological trial." [Rev. 7:2-3, 9:4; Ezek. 9:4-6] (CCC # 1296)
Called to be holy as God is Holy, we must put aside our worldly ways that fall short of shining in Divine love. We must set aside all bitterness, revenge, anger, arguments, slander and malice. We are called to a better life than that, to be gentle and kind to one another, to be peace-makers, affectionate, tenderhearted, forgiving as God has forgiven us.
These are the qualities of the children of God who shine in Christlike love. These qualities model after Christ who loved us and who gave Himself up for us, as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God."
Opening Prayer:
Holy Spirit, open my heart that I may enter this time of prayer with you, hear your voice, and let your grace give me new life today.
Encountering Christ:
1. Murmurs of Doubt or Whispers of Faith?: The Jews listening to Jesus’s words murmured their questions: How could this be? Is he really saying what we are hearing? We are reminded of two others who asked questions when perplexed by what God was proposing. Zechariah, upon hearing the announcement that his son John would be born, asked, “How shall I know this?” (Luke 1:18). Mary, too, asked the angel, “How can this be?” (Luke 1:34). With Zechariah and Our Lady, as with the crowds and the response God desires from us, we find there is a great difference between murmured doubts or complaints and pondered whispers of faith seeking understanding. Wherever our faith is being tested, instead of siding with the doubting crowd, let us offer our questions with faith and great trust.
2. Drawn by the Father: The Catechism, in its section on prayer, affirms that every time we turn to God, it is because he has invited us first. The initiative is always his, and even the grace to respond comes from him (CCC 2567). The key is belief, that is, the open, welcoming acceptance of God’s inviting gesture. This is what it means to listen to the Father and come to Christ; our job is to listen; God’s is to make what he promises come to fulfillment. Catholic faith in the Eucharist affirms and expresses this truth: we come to his Real Presence to receive grace, and he makes that grace fruitful and effective in our lives. Though his action is often in ways unseen, our faith affirms it and helps it grow.
3. The Bread of Life: In this passage, we hear echoes of God’s revelation to Moses (Exodus 3:14). When he spoke to Moses in the burning bush, he revealed his name: I AM who am. God is the One who is, who holds all existence in his hands and whose word is effective: it does what it says. This reference would not have been lost on Jesus’s listeners. Twice he repeated in this passage, “I am the bread of life.” Where in my own heart do I need to let Jesus speak these words of truth and life? Into what dusty corners, closed depths, or discouraged heartaches does he wish to breathe his life and draw me to him?
Conversing with Christ: Lord Jesus, you come to me in the Eucharist and you come to me in these moments of prayer. I know that it is your Father who draws me to you. Help me to renew my faith in you. You know each of my doubts and struggles. Yet, rather than harbor them in my heart, I name each of them before you and place them at your feet, knowing you want me to and you wait for me. You wish to bring me life by giving me your own Body and Blood. Help me to receive your grace in this and each moment of prayer, and in every reception of Holy Communion.
Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will begin to prepare my heart with openness, faith, and longing for the next opportunity I have to receive Holy Communion
Sunday, August 8, 2021- Interior Murmuring
Today's reading from the Gospel of John, [Jn. 6:41-51] we heard the prophetic words of Jesus when He said that He is the Living Bread that came down from Heaven. Through these words, Jesus was preparing the believers for the Last Supper that would introduce the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist in the Holy Catholic Church. Many did not believe Jesus. They complained. They asked how could He have come down from Heaven when they knew that His father was Joseph and His mother was Mary. Many did not believe because they were not listening to what Jesus was revealing to them. They had worldly minds that were darkened, seeking to challenge every word that Jesus spoke rather than listening. Through the hardening of their hearts, they were not spiritually disposed, this preventing them from perceiving the truth.
It is the same today. There are some who do not hear any of the teachings of the Holy Catholic Church because they are not listening. They are placing all their energies towards challenging every word, every authority, every doctrine, etc... rather then listening to the voice of the indwelling Holy Spirit who has been sent to teach and guide them. Sometimes it is necessary to remain silent and to listen. Then we should prayerfully reflect on what we heard for some time, allowing the grace of God to enlighten our hearts so we can see the light in the Spirit of Truth.
Jesus said to those who were complaining among themselves, "No one can come to Me unless drawn by the Father who sent me." As previously said, it is by the grace of God the Father that we are drawn to Jesus through the indwelling Spirit of Truth who teaches us and guides us. Those who are drawn to Jesus, those who listen to His teachings, those who believe in Him and live their Christian faith in Christ, He will raise them on the last day.
Jesus asked those who were present, is it not written in the Scriptures that the prophets said, "And they shall all be taught by God?" This is a very powerful statement. It echoes God the Father drawing His children to Jesus. It echoes God the Father saying in our hearts, 'He is the way, the truth and the life.' It echoes the incarnation of God through Jesus. It echoes Jesus who is God teaching the people. Through Jesus, at that moment, the prophecy of the prophets was being fulfilled. Jesus who is God was teaching the people.
Jesus said, "Everyone who heard and learned from the Father comes to me." Those who listen to their hearts, the free gift that they have received during the Sacrament of Baptism, they hear the calling of God and they are directed towards Jesus. For no one can go to the Father unless they go through the Son, Jesus Christ.
The Spirit of God draws us to the Father. Through the grace of the Father, our faith is established in the Truth. We believe in Jesus Christ as our Savior. We believe in the resurrection of the dead. We believe that Christ will resurrect our physical bodies on the last day so we too may be gloriously transformed in His likeness. Everything that God does for us is accomplished by the involvement of all Three Divine Presences of the Holy Trinity. Then Jesus said that no one has seen the Father except the one who is from God. He has seen the Father. No one has ever seen the Father because the Father is formless and invisible. [Rom. 1:20; Col. 1:15; 1 Tim. 1:17; Heb. 11:27] In their struggle to bring God the Father down to earth in a physical and visible nature, over the centuries, painters have created pictures of God the Father as an old man. This practice, on the increase during the last century, has spread to every nation, especially during the last few decades. None of these paintings and "so called" holy pictures accurately reflect God the Father. In fact, they are an insult to the Divine Presence of God the Father, turning the believers away from the truth.
The holy Catholic Church teaches us, "We ought therefore to recall that God transcends the human distinction between the sexes. He is neither man nor woman: he is God." (CCC. # 239) God Himself said, "I am God and no mortal." [Hos. 11:9] The creating of images of God the Father as an old man is literally creating a false god, another idol to worship. It falls short of reflecting the true nature of the Divine Presence of God the Father as He has been revealed to us through Jesus Christ. On this subject, the Holy Catholic Church further says, "The purification of our hearts had to do with paternal or maternal images, stemming from our personal and cultural history, and influencing our relationship with God. God our Father transcends the categories of the created world. To impose our own ideas in this area 'upon him' would be to fabricate idols to adore or pull down."(CCC. # 2779)
God the Father manifested Himself through Jesus Christ. As Jesus said, "If you know Me, you will know My Father also. From now on you do know Him and have seen Him." [Jn. 14:6-7] Jesus continued His discourse on He being the Bread of Life. Whoever believes in Him has eternal life. While the ancestors of the Old Testament ate the manna in the wilderness, they all died. But those who eat the Bread that came down from Heaven, they will live forever. And the Bread that He gives is His flesh for the life of the world.
These words echo the whole mystery of the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Jesus is God! In Him dwelled bodily the fullness of the Three Divine Presences of the Holy Trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. In a short while, I will be consecrating the bread and the wine. At that moment, they will be transformed into the Body and the Blood of Christ. At that moment, God will physically be present with us through the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. In the consecrated Bread and Wine shall be physically present the fullness of God, all Three Divine Presences of the Holy Trinity. When you will receive the Holy Eucharist, you will be receiving the physical Divine Presences of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in your hearts.
My brothers and sisters, believe in the Words of Jesus. Believe that the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist is the Bread of Life. Without it, you have no life in you. Those who believe in the teachings of Jesus, who persevere in their living faith, and who receive the Church Sacraments, they are on their way to eternal life in the Kingdom of God.
For the Sacrament of Baptism bestows you with the first instalment, the new creation of the seed of God. It makes you righteous in the eyes of God. If you sin, reach out to the Sacrament of Confession to reinstate your righteousness. Once you are righteous again, reach out to the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, the Living Bread that secures your salvation in Christ!

Trong đoạn Tin mừng hôm nay, Chúa Giêsu đã đưa ra một trong những lời dạy rđầy vinh quang và sâu sắc nhất của Ngài. Ngài tiếp tục giảng dạy cho dân chúng và các môn đệ của Ngài về Bí tích Thánh Thể, Một Món quà quý báu đó chính là Mình và Máu thánh của Ngà,Đó chính là Bánh Sự sống. Ngài nói: “Ta là bánh hằng sống từ trời xuống; ai ăn bánh này sẽ được sống đời đời; và bánh mà ta sẽ ban, chính là thịt ta vì sự sống của thế gian”. Và khi nghe những lời này, họ xì xào về Ngài.
Một lần nữa, thật là một điều ngớ ngẩn đối với nhiều người vào thời điểm đó. Nhưng đáng buồn thay, điều tương tự này vẫn xảy ra theo nhiều cách khác nhau cho đến ngày nay. Mỗi Chủ Nhật và mỗi ngày nếu có thể, chúng ta có cơ hội rước lấy Mình và Máu Thánh Chúa, Linh hồn và Thần tính của Đấng Cứu Thếi, Vua của muôn loài, Đấng Cứu Thế, Đấng Tạo Hóa, Thiên Chúa Toàn Năng và Vinh Quang! Tuy nhiên, rất nhiều người trong chúng ta phải làm gì? Chúng ta đến tham dự Thánh lễ một cách không quan tâm, mất tập trung, và quan tâm nhiều hơn đến những gì chúng ta sẽ làm sau đó trong ngày hơn là những gì chúng ta đang làm trong Thánh Lễ.
Đây là một sự thật đáng buồn cần được sửa chữa. Thánh John Vianney nói: “Nếu chúng ta hiểu được ý Nghĩa món quà Chúa ban trong Thánh Lễ, chúng ta sẽ chết ngay lập tức vì tình yêu. Chúng ta có hiểu Thánh lễ không? Lầm bầm về lời dạy của Chúa Giêsu về Bí tích Thánh Thể không nhất thiết phải chỉ là điều chúng ta nói thành tiếng. Chúng ta “lẩm bẩm” về Chúa Giêsu trong nội tâm khi chúng ta không hiểu, không chấp nhận và tham dự vào món quà vinh quang này. Lầm bầm cũng giống như thiếu niềm tin và sự ôm ấp hoàn toàn về món quà quý báu này. Có lẽ chúng ta không lẩm bẩm bên ngoài bằng lời nói của mình, nhưng chúng ta có thể thấy rằng chúng ta lẩm bẩm bên trong tâm hồn với ý nghĩa rằng chúng ta không quan tâm đến Món quà quý giá này.
Hôm nay, hãy suy ngẫm xem lòng bạn có được tham dự trọn vẹn với Chúa Giêsu Thánh Thể hay không. Khi nghĩ đến việc đi tham dự Thánh lễ, bạn có tràn ngập niềm vui và một niềm khao khát thiêng liêng sâu sắc không? Hay bạn xem nó như một nghĩa vụ cần phải thực hiện? Nếu đó là nghĩa vụ bạn cần phải thực hiện nhiều hơn, thì bạn có thể có nhiều nội tâm "lẩm bẩm" hơn bạn nhận ra.

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B)
In the passage above, Jesus was giving one of His most glorious and profound teachings. He was continuing His teaching on the Most Holy Eucharist, the Gift of His Body and Blood as the Bread of Life. He said, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” And upon hearing this teaching, they murmured about Him.
Again, what a silly thing for many to do at that time. But sadly this same thing still happens in a variety of ways today. Every Sunday (and every day if we are able) we are given the opportunity to consume the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of the Messiah, the King of all Kings, the Savior of the World, the Creator, Omnipotent and Glorious God! Yet, what do so many of us do? We come to Mass disinterested, distracted, and more concerned about what we will be doing later in the day than what we are doing at the Holy Mass.
This is a sad truth that needs to be corrected. “If we but understood the gift of the Holy Mass we would die instantly out of love,” said St. John Vianney. Do you understand the Mass?
Murmuring about Jesus’ teaching on the Eucharist does not necessarily have to be only something we say out loud. We “murmur” about Jesus interiorly when we fail to understand, accept and enter into this glorious gift. Murmuring is the same as lacking a complete conviction and embrace of this gift. Perhaps we do not murmur externally with our words, but we may find we murmur interiorly in the sense that we lack interest in this Precious Gift.
Reflect, today, upon whether or not your heart is fully engaged with the Holy Eucharist. When you think about going to Mass, are you overwhelmed with joy and a deep spiritual longing? Or do you look at it as an obligation you need to fulfill? If it is more of an obligation you need to fulfill, then you may have more of an interior “murmuring” than you realize.
Lord, help me to see You in the Holy Mass. Help me to long for You in the Most Holy Eucharist. May I never lack proper faith and devotion. May I always be filled with a deep love for You, present in this Sacred Gift! Jesus, I trust in You.
