 Suy Niệm thứ Tư tuần thứ 33 Thường Niên 

Trong bài đọc thứ nhất hôm nay chúng ta nghe thấy đức tin và sự can đảm của bà mẹ của bảy người con bị xử tử vì nhất quyết tuân thủ luật Đạo của người Do Thái, khi bà nói với người con út " Con ơi, con hay thương mẹ đã cưu mang con 9 tháng và bú mớm 3 năm, cùng đã nuôi nấng, dẫn đưa con cho đến tuổi này và đã dưỡng dục con. Hỡi con, mẹ xin con hãy ngước nhìn trời đất mà xem tất cả mọi vật trong đó, và hãy biết rằng Thiên Chúa đã làm ra chúng, không phải do vật gì đã có trước và về loài người thì cũng như thế. Ðừng sợ tên lý hình ấy, nhưng hãy ở sao cho xứng với các anh con và chết, ngõ hầu nhờ (Chúa) thương, mẹ được gặp lại con làm một với các anh con". (2 Mc 7: 28 - 29) 

Qua bài dụ ngôn trong bài Tin Mừng, Chúa Giêsu muốn dạy chúng ta lả chúng ta phải tận dụng và quý mến những món quà mà Thiên Chúa đã ban riêng cho mỗi người chúng ta trong cuộc sống: chúng ta sẽ được thưởng hay bị trừng phạt một cách tương ứng. Những món quà được Chúa ban cho chúng ta đã làm cho thế giới này thèm muốn có thể đó là: quyền lực, uy tín, danh tiếng, tiền tài.... Những món quà, năng khiếu này có thể giúp lợi ích cho chúng ta và nhân loại tùy thuộc vào cách chúng ta hành sự và sử dụng chúng. Thành công và nổi danh nổi tiếng có thể là những đam mê có thể đưa dẫn con người chúng ta lấn sâu vào tội lỗi, đưa chúng ta đến sự hủy diệt chính mình. Tài năng vaâ năng khiếu của chúng ta có thể không được phát triển và năng động trong chúng ta có lẽ vì nhiều lý do: như vậy đó là do chúng ta đã thiếu trách nhiệm vì chúng ta đã không biết dùng tài năng của Chúa ban cho chúng ta. Không ai là người không được Chúa ban cho cái tài năng riêng biệt và đó chính là món quà mà Chúa đã ban tặng cho chúng ta. Mọi người chúng ta ai cũng đều có một cái tài năng riêng nào đó để giúp chúng ta hành động và cộng sự với Thiên Chúa trong cải tạo và đổi mới cái thế giới mà chúng ta đang sống,.

REFLECTION
In the first reading we hear about the faith and courage of the mother of seven sons killed for their adherence to Jewish law, "I ask you now, my son, that when you see the heavens, the earth and all that is in it, you know that God made all this from nothing, and the human race as well. Do not fear these executioners, but make yourself worthy of your brothers – accept death that you may again meet your brothers in the time of mercy." (2 Mc 7: 28 – 29).

In the parable of the talents in the Gospel reading, we are told that we must make the best use of the gifts given us in life: we will be rewarded or punished accordingly. Our God-given gifts win for us much coveted worldly honors: power, prestige, fame. They could be boon or bane depending on how we use them. Success and fame could be all-consuming passions, leading to our own destruction. Our talents could remain dormant in us for a variety of reasons: such would be great lack of responsibility on our part. No one is without talents and gifts. Everyone has something to offer and to work with. Even in old age, we can give good example and guidance.

Opening Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help me to value the talents you have blessed me with and generously use them for the glory of your name!

Encountering Christ:
1. He Gave Them Coins: “He called ten of his servants and gave them ten gold coins and told them, ‘Engage in trade with these until I return.’” Our Lord entrusts to all of us the building up of his kingdom! By virtue of our baptism we have become heirs of the kingdom with Christ. He doesn’t hold back anything that we need for this task. Jesus wants nothing more than to share what he has received with us so that, by his grace, we can do even greater works than he did. If we could only capture what an honor it is to be invested with such responsibility! Jesus wants us to join our efforts in communion with his brothers and sisters. Do I have zeal to use my talents to “do the works of God” that he calls me to? Am I willing to work alongside others in this effort?
2. No King for Us: Despite Jesus’s complete trust in us, we often rebel, and sometimes show outright disdain, for the talents we have been given. Our fallen tendency is to want to do it our way and not have to depend on God or anyone else. Yet, this attitude always leads us to disappointment, frustration, and loneliness. Jesus tells us: “Apart from me you can do nothing!” When I engage in work–at home, at the office, or in ministry–am I aware that Jesus has rights over me, that I am using talents “on loan” from the Father? How seriously do I take his command to go and bear fruit?
3. Well Done, Good Servant!: “You have been faithful in this very small matter; take charge of ten cities.” The Lord is never outdone in generosity! If we could only grasp the depth of love and trust Jesus willingly puts in each of us, we would fall on our faces in worship and tell him without reserve to ask anything he wishes of us. No matter what the Lord entrusts to us, little or big, he is willing to entrust us with even more if we are willing to love and serve him fully. After all, he created us and knows what is best. We can put ourselves completely in his hands without hesitation. Do our hearts reflect a servant’s gratitude toward his good and trustworthy Master?

Conversing with Christ: Jesus, my lord and king, I recognize you as lord of my life and King of the Universe. I so often struggle with a rebellious spirit that shouts out “non servium!” (I will not serve!), but I don’t want to give in to this temptation. I want to serve you in communion with others, with generosity and fidelity. Make my heart like yours and bear fruit for the kingdom with the gift of my life!
Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will generously and faithfully seek to accomplish well the small duties of the day.

Trong thế giới của chúng ta ngày nay, mọi người dường như ai cũng nghĩ tới lợi nhuận trong việc buôn bán, hay lợi tức trong việc đầu tư. Hầu hết chúng ta dành thời gian của chúng ta làm việc, tìm cách đầu tư làm giàu và lúc nào cũng muốn có thêm lợi nhuận nhiều hơn. Chúng ta muốn có lợi tức to lớn sau khi chúng ta đã bỏ ra một số vốn dù lớn hay nhỏ, lợi càng nhiều càng tốt cho chúng ta. Thậm chí chúng ta còn muốn nhận lãn suất nhiều hơn là những gì chúng ta đã bỏ ra.
Thật vậy, dụ ngôn hôm nay Chúa muốn nói với chúng ta rằng Thiên Chúa đòi hỏi chúng ta phải biết dùng những năng khiếu và tài năng mà Chúa đã ban cho chúng để phát triển và sinh lời cho Nước Chúa. Thiên Chúa muốn chúng ta được hạnh phúc và được sống cuộc sống thật đầy đủ với những gì chúng ta đã bỏ công lao và sức lực tài năng của chúng ta để đầu tư vào cuộc sống đời sau của chúng ta. Điều quan trọng là chúng ta phải nhận thấy và đánh giá cao những gì chúng ta đã đầu tư. Những ân sủng, tài năng của Thiên Chúa đã trao ban cho chúng ta một cách tự do và với tình yêu thương thật vô bờ bến vì thế chúng ta phải nên cảm tạ, biết ơn và vui vẻ đón nhận và sử dụng những món quà, những năng khiếu của chúng ta một cách đứng đắn, với mục đích vinh danh Thiên Chúa qua việc giúp ích cộng đồng hay những người thiếu may mắn khác.
Sau hết,, chúng ta hãy cầu nguyện cho nhau, cho những ai đã cầu nguyện cho chúng ta và cho những ai cần đến những lời cầu xin của chúng ta nhiều nhất.

Reflection:
In our world today, everyone seems to be concerned about profit or return of investment. Most of the time we prefer to receive than to give. We want a return for what we have put in. We may even want to receive much more than what we have put in. In today's Gospel parable, is God teaching us about the importance of profit and return of investment?
Indeed the parable tells us that God demands that we make good use, the best use, of gifts and talents given to us. God wants us to be happy and live our lives to the fullest with what we have been given. It is important that we see and appreciate what we have been given. His gifts have been given to us freely and with great love: we should be grateful and joyful in our use of them not only for ourselves but also for others.
Finally, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.

Meditation: How does God establish his kingdom here on the earth? The Jews in Jesus' time had a heightened sense that the Messiah would appear soon to usher in the kingdom of God's justice, love, and peace on the earth (Isaiah 11:1-9). Jesus, in fact, spoke in messianic terms of the coming reign of God. Perhaps his entry into Jerusalem would bring about such a change and overthrow of Roman domination. Jesus speaks to their longing for a new kingdom in the parable of a nobleman who went away to receive a kingdom. The parable reveals something important about how God works his plan and purpose with the human race. The parable speaks first of the king's trust in his subjects. While he goes away he leaves them with his money to use as they think best. While there were no strings attached, this was obviously a test to see if the king's subjects would be faithful and reliable in their use of the money entrusted to them. Third, the king rewards those who are faithful and he punishes those who sit by idly and who do nothing with his money.

The Lord Jesus offers us a kingdom of justice, love, and peace and he calls us to live as citizens of this kingdom where he rules as Lord and Master. Through his atoning death on the cross and through his resurrection victory, Jesus frees us from a kingdom of darkness where sin and Satan reign. Through the power of the Holy Spirit the Lord gives us freedom to live as his servants and to lay down our lives in loving service of our neighbors (Galatians 5:1,13). The Lord entrusts us with his gifts and graces and he gives us freedom to use them as we think best. With each gift and talent, the Lord gives sufficient grace and strength for using them in a fitting way. As the parable of the talents shows, God abhors indifference and an attitude that says it's not worth trying. God honors those who use their talents and gifts for doing good. Those who are faithful with even a little are entrusted with more! But those who neglect or squander what God has entrusted to them will lose what they have. There is an important lesson here for us. No one can stand still for long in the Christian life. We either get more or we lose what we have. We either advance towards God or we slip back. Do you trust in God's grace to make good use of the gifts and talents he has given you?
"Lord Jesus, be the ruler of my heart and mind and the master of my home and goods. Fill me with a generous and wise spirit that I may use the gifts, talents, time, and resources you give me for your glory and your kingdom."
