Trong bài Tin Mừng, Chúa Giêsu đã nổi giận đánh đuổi những người buôn bán lợi dụng kinh doanh trong khu vực Đền thờ: “nhà của Ta sẽ là nhà cầu nguyện, còn các ngươi thì làm nó thành hang trộm cướp." (Lk 19 - 46) Trong đoạn Tin Mừng này, Chúa Giêsu đã dùng dịp này để tiên đoán về sự phục sinh của mình, "'Phá hủy ngôi đền thờ này đi, và trong ba ngày ta sẽ dựng lại'. ... Thật ra, Chúa Giêsu đã nói về Đền thờ là thân xác của Ngài. Chỉ khi Chúa sống lại từ cõi chết, thì các môn đệ của Ngài mới nhớ những lời này. “(Jn 2: 19 - 22)

Qua việc đuổi bọn buôn bán trong Đền thờ, Chúa Giêsu đã khẳng định sự tôn trọng Đền thờ hay Nhà của Thiên Chúa, trong đó Thiên Chúa là đấng Thánh trên các Thánh, nơi mà Hòm Bia Giao ước của Thiên Chúa đã được yên vị nơi này. Trong cơn giận dữ Ngài đánh và đuổi những người bán thú vật cho việc hiến tế hay làm lễ vật; Ngài lật đổ quầy bàn đổi tiền. "Hãy cất khỏi đây những thứ vật này, và đừng biến nhà của Cha ta thành một cái chợ." (Ga 2: 16)

Vậy còn chúng ta, chúng ta đã cư xử thế nào trong nhà thờ? Chúng ta đã ăn mặc thế nào khi đến nhà thờ? Chúng ta đã thể hiện sự tôn trọng như nào trong Thánh lễ và trong các việc phụng vụ khác như đọc kinh, chầu Thánh Thể? Trong các nhà thờ của chúng ta đều luôn được lưu giữ Chúa trong Thánh Thể, và Chúa Giêsu luôn luôn ở giữa chúng ta trong hình bánh rượu. Nhà thờ của chúng ta chính là nhà của Thiên Chúa.

Lạy Chúa, xin hướng dẫn lời nói và việc làm của chúng con ngày hôm nay và mỗi ngày trong đời của chúng con để chúng con có thể dâng lên Chúa những lời ngợi khen, tôn kính và phục vụ.

 

REFLECTION
In the first reading Judas Maccabeus, the leader of the Jews loyal to their covenant with Yahweh, with joyous celebrations restores proper worship at the Temple in Jerusalem which had been desecrated by invaders.

In the Gospel reading Jesus in anger drives out the merchants who   were profaning the House of God with their active trade and business in the Temple area: "My house shall be a house of prayer: but you have turned it into a den of robbers." In the longer account in John of Jesus clearing the Temple in Jerusalem, Jesus uses the occasion to predict his resurrection, "'Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.' . . . Actually, Jesus was referring to the temple of his body. Only when he had risen from the dead did his disciples remember these words." (Jn 2: 19 – 22)

By his cleansing of the Temple, Jesus affirmed respect for the House of God, wherein the Holy of Holies, the Ark of the Covenant rested. Enraged, he drove out the merchants selling animals to be sacrificed or given as offering; he overthrew the tables of the money-changers. "Take all this away and stop turning my Father's house into a marketplace." (Jn 2: 16)

How do we behave in church? How do we dress for church? What respect do we show during Mass and other religious services? Our churches house the Blessed Sacrament, Jesus in our midst as bread. Our churches are God's house.

 

Opening Prayer: 

Lord, help me to value not only the sacredness of my own person, but also the sacred space of the parish where I worship you in the Eucharist. Grant me a deeper consciousness of your continual presence.

Encountering Christ:

1. A House of Prayer: Over and over again in the Gospel accounts we see Jesus going off to pray in silence, preach in the synagogue, and go to the temple for worship. His attitude was obvious: he honored his Father and had a deep awareness of the sacred space of his own person and in places of worship reserved for the Father’s honor and glory. Jesus was so very conscious of his Father’s continual presence that he could enter the chamber of his heart alone and be with his Father for long periods of time. How can we imitate Jesus in his constant communion with the Father? How can we protect the sacredness of our prayer time and our reverence for the church in which we worship?

2. A Den of Thieves:  By virtue of original sin we are wounded and tend toward concupiscence. Our souls, and even our church, can sometimes seem like a den of thieves with attitudes, vices, and spirits that undermine our sacredness, our intimacy with God, and our reverence for the house of God. Jesus asks us to look intently at him and allow him to expose those interior spaces which require renovation. He will do the heavy lifting if we allow him to show us where we need to do the spiritual work.

3. Resistance or Openness?: The chief priests, scribes, and leaders of the people didn’t accept the message and actions of Jesus and immediately dismissed him as a radical and fanatic, without just reason. His listeners, however, were amazed by Jesus and hung on his every word. Jesus fed their souls, their hopes, and their lives. Every day Jesus is teaching in the temples of our lives. He is accessible at daily Mass, in adoration chapels, and through the charity of others we meet. We are called to be good “students” of the Master: to be attentive to the message he wants us to learn each day, each moment. God plans to give us all the grace we need to join him one day in heaven. All we need do is pay attention.

Conversing with Christ: Lord Jesus, I want to grow in the awe of the dignity and sacredness of my person and allow that to translate into how I worship and honor you in the life of the church. Help me to say no to all sin and vice—those thieves seeking to steal my heart from you!

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will pray in a place (whether at home or at church) where I put all distractions aside so as to be fully present to you.

Các bài đọc hôm nay nhắc nhở chúng ta về việc chuẩn bị và sẵn sàng tâm hồn chúng ta. Chúa Giêsu đã thanh tẩy Đền Thờ vì Đền thờ là ngôi nhà của Chúa Cha, cha Ngài, là một nơi dành cho việc cầu nguyện, tế lễ để vinh danh Thiên Chúa, chứ không phải là chỗ đễ cho các việc kinh doanh buôn bán, bóc lột. Chúa Giêsu thanh tẩy đền thờ và giờ đây Ngài cũng muốn chúng ta phải thanh tẩy đền thờ trong tâm hồn chúng ta, vì mỗi người chúng ta là đền thờ riêng cho Chúa ngự trị.

Trong một bồi cảnh gợi nhớ đến sự dâng hiến đền thờ Solomon ban đầu của  800 năm trước (1 Các Vua 8), Dân Chúng thời Tiên tri Maccabees  tái cung hiến Đền Thờ và họ đã hân hoan, ăn mừng ngày lễ trong tám ngày. Cho đến này, Mặc dù đền Jerasalem không còn nữa, nhưng mỗi năm, người Do Thái vẫn còn nhớ đến kỉ niệm ngày cung hiến đền thờ này khi họ ăn mừng lễ Hanukkah trong tám ngày. Chúng ta cũng là đền thờ của Chúa Thánh Thần, Trong cuộc sống hàng ngày, chúng ta phải tự nhắc nhở và nhớ rằng Thiên Chúa đang ở trong chúng ta. Cách mà giúp chúng ta được thanh tẩy là hãy đến với Chúa trong bí tích Hoà giảì, để chúng ta làm hoà với Thiên Chúa để chúng ta được thánh tẩy và thánh hoá tâm hồn của chúng ta, nơi mà Thiên Chúa hằng ngự trị mỗi ngày trong cuộc sống của chúng ta.  

Lạy Chúa, xin hướng dẫn lời nói và việc làm của chúng con ngày hôm nay và mỗi ngày trong đời của chúng con để chúng con có thể dâng lên Chúa những lời ngợi khen, tôn kính và phục vụ.

 

Reflection:   Lk. 19:45-48)

 For what do you prepare in life — an important exam, the start of a new year, the birth of a child? Today’s readings are about preparation. Jesus cleanses the Temple. The Temple is his Father’s house  a place meant for prayer and not for business. Jesus cleanses the Temple at this time because he is about to teach there. His teachings are received most deeply when they become part of our prayer.

    In the first reading, the Jewish Maccabees retake control of Judea from the Seleucid Empire. They arrive at the Temple and see that this sacred place has been neglected and desecrated. The people are disturbed by this sight but they purify the site, build a new altar and eventually make the Temple a place where God is worshipped again. In a scene that is reminiscent of the original dedication of the Temple by Solomon 800 years before (1 Kings 8), the Maccabees now rededicate the Temple. The people rejoice for eight days.

       Each year, Jewish people still remember this rededication as they celebrate Hanukkah for eight days. We are also a Temple of the Holy Spirit. In daily life, what or who helps us to remember that God dwells within us? Is there anything from which we desire to be cleansed?

Lord, guide my words and deeds today so that I may give You praise, reverence and service.

 

Meditation: Why did Jesus drive out the money changers in the temple at Jerusalem? Was he upset with their greediness? This is the only incident in the Gospels where we see Jesus using physical force. Jesus went to Jerusalem, knowing he would meet certain death on the cross, but victory as well for our sake. His act of judgment in the temple is meant to be a prophetic sign and warning to the people that God takes our worship very seriously. In this incident we see Jesus' startling and swift action in cleansing the temple of those who were using it to exploit the worshipers of God. The money changers took advantage of the poor and forced them to pay many times more than was right – in the house of God no less! Their robbery of the poor was not only dishonoring to God but unjust toward their neighbor. In justification for his audacious action Jesus quotes from the prophets Isaiah (Isaiah 56:7) and Jeremiah (Jeremiah 7:11). His act of judgment aims to purify the worship of God's people and to discipline their erring ways. Despite the objections of the religious leaders, no doubt because Jesus was usurping their authority in the house of God, the people who listened to Jesus teaching daily in the temple regarded him with great awe and respect. Luke tells us that "they hung upon Jesus' words" (Luke 19:48). How hungry are you for God's word?

 

If we approach God's word with a humble attentive heart and with a willingness to be taught by the Lord, then we are in a good place to allow God's word to change and transform us in the likeness of Christ. The Lord wants to teach us his ways so that we may grow in holiness. The Lord both instructs and disciplines us in love to lead us from the error of our sinful ways to his truth and justice. "God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness" (Hebrews 12:10). The Lord calls us to be a holy people who worship him with reverence and gratitude for his great mercy and kindness towards us. Do you allow God's word to transform you in his way of love and holiness?

 

Bài Phúc Âm hôm nay cho thấy lần đầu tiên Chúa Giêsu chúng ta thấy Chúa Giêsu phát giận và dùng sức mạnh đập phá các quầy hàng trong đền thánh . Chúa Giê su lên Jurusalem và biết rằng mình sẽ phải gặp những thử thách và sẽ phải chết trên thập giá, nhưng Ngài cũng chiến thắng cho tội lỗi của chúng ta.

Những việc Ngài làm và xử sự trong đền thánh đó làm những điềm cảnh báo và dấu hiệu tiên báo cho mọi người biết rằng Thiên Chúa mong muốn chúng ta tôn thờ và tôn kính Ngài cách nghiêm trọng. Trong dịp này chúng ta thấy Chúa Giê su đã dọn dẹp và thánh tẩy đền thánh bằng cách đánh đuổi những kẻ buôn bán và lơi dụng đền thờ làm nơi kinh tài và hưởng lợi cá nhân.

 

Nếu chúng ta đế với Lời Chúa với tâm hồn kiêm cung và biết lắng nghe tiếng Chúa dạy bảo chúng ta, thì chúng ta đi đúng hướng Chúa đã định sẵn cho chúng ta và nhờ đó Lời Chúa sẽ biết cải chúng ta nên giống Chúa Giê su. Vì Chúa muốn chúng ta tất cả đều nên thánh. Chúa muốn dạy các môn đệ của Ngài và chúng ta là phải biết yêu thương vì yêu thương sẽ đưa chúng ta tránh được tất cả các tội lỗi và hướng dẫn chúng ta đến với tình yêu , sự thật và công lý. Thiên Chúa luôn muốn chúng ta nên thánh để thờ phượng Chúa một cách kính cẩn và với tấm lòng biết ơn Ngài vì Chúa là Người đã ban tất cả mọi sự cho chúng ta.

"Lord Jesus, you open wide the door of your house and you bid us to enter confidently that we may worship you in spirit and truth. Help me to draw near to you with gratitude and joy for your great mercy. May I always revere your word and give you acceptable praise and worship."
