Trong bài đọc thứ Nhất, chúng ta thấy các cộng đồng Kitô giáo lúc sơ khai chia sẻ tài sản với nhau và quan tâm chung đến tất cả Kitô hữu: "Không ai chiếm cứ hay cố giữ quyền sở hữu cá nhân, nhưng thay vào đó họ chia sẻ với nhau tất cả những gì họ có. Họ làm chứng cho sự phục sinh của Chúa Giêsu, vì tất cả họ đang sống trong thời gian ân sủng đặc biệt. " Trong bài đọc Tin Mừng, trong cuộc trò chuyện Nicodemus, Chúa Giêsu nói về việc "tái sinh trong Thánh Linh" và để có được sự sống đời đời mà Con Người đã bị treo lên câu thập giá, như người Do Thái bị rắn cắn được cứu bằng cách nhìn lên con rắn bằng đồng được treo trên cảy cao. Chúa Giêsu nói về việc Người bị treo lên thập tự giá để cứu rỗi nhân loại.
Như thánh Phêrô đã giảng trong Chủ nhật ngày lễ Ngũ tuần, " Đức Giê-su Na-da-rét, là người đã được Thiên Chúa phái đến với anh em. Và để chứng thực sứ mệnh của Người, Thiên Chúa đã cho Người làm những phép mầu, điềm thiêng và dấu lạ giữa anh em. Chính anh em biết điều đó. Theo kế hoạch Thiên Chúa đã định và biết trước, Đức Giê-su ấy đã bị nộp, và anh em đã dùng bàn tay kẻ dữ đóng đinh Người vào thập giá mà giết đi. Nhưng Thiên Chúa đã làm cho Người sống lại, giải thoát Người khỏi những đau khổ của cái chết. Vì lẽ cái chết không tài nào khống chế được Người mãi.."(Công vụ 2: 22b - 24)
Tất cả những người tín hữu của Chúa Kitô đều được tái sinh trong nước qua phép rửa và Chúa Thánh Thần, Họ hy vọng sẽ đạt được sự sống đời đời nhờ đức tin vào Con Thiên Chúa người đã xuống thế làm người như chúng ta và đã chết trên thập tự giá để cứu rỗi con người nhân loại chúng ta.
Chúng ta hãy cầu xin Chúa gia tăng đức tin của chúng ta vào Chúa Giêsu Kitô.
In the first reading we see the early Christian communities sharing property with one another and taking care of all their fellow believers and followers of Christ: "No one claimed private ownership of possessions, but rather they shared things in common. With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, for all of them were living in an exceptional time of grace."
In the Gospel reading, in his conversation with the Jewish leader Nicodemus, Jesus speaks of being "born in the Spirit" and having eternal life through the Son of Man being lifted up, just as the Hebrews of old bitten by serpents were saved by looking at the mounted bronze serpent. Jesus was speaking about his being lifted up on the cross for the salvation of mankind.
As Peter preached on Pentecost Sunday, "God accredited him [Jesus] and through him did powerful deeds and wonders and signs in your midst, as you well know. You delivered him to sinners to be crucified and killed, and in this way, the purpose of God from all times was fulfilled. But God raised him from the pain of death, because it was impossible for him to be held in the power of death." (Acts 2: 22b – 24)
All believers of Christ are re-born in baptism in water and the Holy Spirit and hope to reach eternal life through their faith in the Son of God who became man and died on the cross for man's salvation. We pray for an increase in our faith in the Lord Jesus.

As we reflected upon yesterday, Nicodemus is one of the only Pharisees who ultimately converted, became a follower of Jesus, and is today considered a saint. The only other Pharisees who were recorded by name as converts to Christianity were Saint Paul and Gamaliel. Acts 15:5 also indicates that some other Pharisees ultimately converted.
When the many encounters between Jesus and the Pharisees are considered as a whole, it’s clear that there was great resistance among them toward Jesus and His teaching. They were constantly seeking to trap Him and, of course, ultimately were responsible for His death, along with other leading religious leaders from the Sanhedrin. For that reason, it’s easy to understand that there must have been great pressure upon all the Pharisees to reject Jesus. Each one of them would have felt the power of peer pressure to act in accord with the general view of Jesus’ condemnation. This is the context of this passage above in which Nicodemus questions Jesus. This passage continues yesterday’s Gospel conversation in which Jesus says clearly to Nicodemus that the way to Heaven is to be “born from above.” Nicodemus questions how one can “be born again,” and then Jesus issues this apparent criticism of Him quoted above.
It’s helpful to understand that Jesus’ criticism was not a condemnation of Nicodemus. It was not in the tone of His normal “Woe to you…” statements; rather, it was a gentle but very direct challenge to Nicodemus so as to move him from his questions to faith. And that’s the key. Nicodemus did not come to Jesus to trap and condemn Him like the other Pharisees did. Nicodemus came because he was confused. And most likely, he was confused because he felt great peer pressure from his fellow Pharisees to condemn Jesus.
Understanding this context should help us understand not only the goodness and courage of Nicodemus but also the loving boldness of Jesus. Jesus knew that Nicodemus was open. He knew that Nicodemus could be won over. But Jesus also knew that Nicodemus needed to be challenged in a direct and firm way. He needed a bit of a “holy push” so as to enter into the gift of faith. Of course, Jesus’ challenge ultimately won Nicodemus over.
Reflect, today, upon any way in which you, too, need a “holy push” from our Lord. What form of worldly pressure do you experience in life? Do friends, neighbors, family members or co-workers impose upon you in some way a peer pressure that is contrary to the life of true holiness? If so, ponder the ultimate courage of Nicodemus, Saint Paul and Gamaliel. Let their witness inspire you and allow our Lord to challenge you where you need it the most so that you, too, will receive the “holy push” that you need to be a more faithful follower of Jesus.
My Lord of all strength, You are unwavering in Your determination to challenge me in the area that I need it the most. Help me to receive Your gentle rebukes of love when I am weak so that I will have the courage and strength I need to be a faithful follower of You. Give me clarity and understanding, dear Lord, and help me to overcome the misleading pressures of the world. Jesus, I trust in You.
Opening Prayer: Lord God, your words are difficult. How am I to understand this passage? I am made of flesh, and my thoughts are fleshly, and I feel incapable of being spiritual. I beseech you, send forth your Holy Spirit! Things shall be created, and you will renew the face of the earth!
2. He Came Down from Heaven: The Son of Man “has come down from heaven.” We recite it every Sunday in the Creed; it is the answer to all our yearnings for God. We are too weak to rise up and search God out in his heavens. Therefore, he has had mercy on us; he has come down from heaven. This is what sets Christianity apart from all other religions; God became man. “For us men and our salvation, he came down from heaven.” Such is the absurdity of his love for us that he would leave heaven to live with us. Such is the divine wisdom of the Incarnation. The Fathers saw this mystery prefigured in the Old Testament: “Only then did she [wisdom] appear on earth and live among human beings” (Baruch 3:38).
3. The Serpent in the Desert: The reference to Moses lifting up the serpent in the desert comes from Numbers 21:4-9, which is read on Tuesday of the fifth week of Lent. The people complained against God and Moses because of the poor food and lack of water in the desert. As a result, they were plagued by fiery serpents who killed many of them. But God ordered Moses to craft a serpent and raise it up as a standard, and anyone who looked at it was healed. God always provides a way of repentance and salvation for his people. The Son of Man was also lifted up on the Cross so that everyone who believes in Jesus crucified and risen has eternal life. This is why he came down from heaven. This is the “how” of our salvation.
Conversing with Christ: Lord Jesus, you have taught me that I need your Holy Spirit. It is your Holy Spirit–the Spirit of Jesus–who enables me to know and love and confess you. “No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:3).
