Hôm nay là Chúa nhật đầu tiên của năm phụng vụ mới B và là Chúa nhật đầu tiên của Mùa Vọng. Mùa Vọng là mùa chuẩn bị đón Chúa chúng ta đến.Chúng ta đang chuẩn bị cho điều gì? để thắp đèn Giáng sinh trên đường phố? Một vài tuần trước, chúng tôi ở Singapore và chúng tôi đã thấy cảnh trang trí Giáng sinh ở khắp mọi nơi trong thành phố. Lúc đó mới chỉ là đầu tháng 11.
Vậy chúng ta làm gì vào dịp Giáng sinh? Giáng sinh này chúng ta sẽ có một vị khách đặc biệt phải không? Bạn đang chuẩn bị gì khi mong chờ ai đó đến thăm mình vào dịp Giáng sinh này? Dọn dẹp nhà cửa, dọn phòng sẵn sàng cho khách?
Trong đời sống thiêng liêng của chúng ta, có một Đấng muốn dành thời gian với chúng ta trong lễ Giáng Sinh này và mong mỏi chúng ta dành thời gian với Người, đó là Chúa Giêsu. Chúng ta sẽ biến đây thành một Giáng sinh tuyệt vời nhất mà chúng ta từng có bằng cách mở rộng trái tim và ngôi nhà của chúng ta cho Chúa Giêsu. Hãy để Chúa Giêsu đến thăm trái tim và ngôi nhà của chúng ta trong lễ Giáng Sinh này. Chúng ta phải chuẩn bị cho chuyến viếng thăm của vị khách đặc biệt này và dành chỗ trong lòng mình sẵn sàng cho Ngài.
Hôm nay chúng ta bắt đầu ngày đầu tiên của Mùa Vọng và Mùa Vọng là mùa hy vọng. Đó là thời kỳ chúng ta chờ đợi việc thực hiện lời hứa của Thiên Chúa qua các vị tiên tri của Ngài. Ngoài việc là mùa của hy vọng, nó còn là mùa của sự kiên nhẫn và cầu nguyện. Trong bốn tuần Mùa Vọng này, chúng ta phải chuẩn bị cho sự ra đời của Đấng Mê-si. Cần lưu ý rằng trong khi chúng ta chuẩn bị về thể chất thì điều quan trọng nhất phải là sự chuẩn bị về mặt tinh thần.
Mùa Vọng là thời gian ân sủng đặc biệt được ban cho chúng ta để chuẩn bị đón Chúa Giêsu đến thăm trái tim và ngôi nhà của chúng ta. Trong Tin Mừng hôm nay Chúa Giêsu nói: “Anh em hãy tỉnh thức! Coi chừng! Các con không biết khi nào thì giờ sẽ đến… Điều Thầy nói với các con, Thầy bảo tất cả mọi người: ‘Hãy canh thức!’” (Mác 13:33,37)
Tại sao ngày nay chúng ta được yêu cầu phải cảnh giác và cảnh giác? Tất cả chúng ta đều biết rằng, chúng ta sẽ gặp Chúa Giêsu với tư cách là thẩm phán khi chúng ta chết hoặc khi Ngài đến lần thứ hai trong vinh quang, tùy điều nào đến trước, vì vậy chúng ta thực sự được yêu cầu chuẩn bị tâm hồn cho Chúa. Qua bài đọc thứ nhất hôm nay, chúng ta có thể nhìn vấn đề theo cách này.
Trong bài đọc thứ nhất chúng ta đã nghe: “Tất cả chúng tôi đều khô héo như lá, và tội lỗi chúng tôi như cơn gió cuốn đi” (Is 64:6). Có một ân sủng được ban cho chúng ta trong Mùa Vọng để có được những ưu tiên đúng đắn trong cuộc sống của chúng ta và sau đó chúng ta có thể nói như tiên tri Isaia trong bài đọc đầu tiên: “Chưa hề có tai nghe, mắt chưa từng thấy, không có Thiên Chúa nào ngoại trừ ông đang làm những việc như vậy.” cho những ai trông đợi Ngài” (Ê-sai 64:4)

Thực sự chỉ có một món quà duy nhất vào dịp Giáng sinh, đó là Chúa Giêsu. Đừng để bị lừa dối bởi sự ngu ngốc của thời gian này. Đừng quên Chúa Giêsu. Hãy nhớ những lời của Chúa Giêsu trong Tin Mừng: “Vậy hãy tỉnh thức; anh em không biết khi nào chủ nhà sẽ đến, dù vào buổi tối, lúc nửa đêm, lúc gà gáy hay buổi sáng. Cầu mong anh ấy không đột ngột đến và thấy bạn đang ngủ. Điều tôi nói với anh em, tôi cũng nói với tất cả mọi người: ‘Hãy coi chừng!’” (Mác 13:35-37)
Việc sẵn sàng cho Chúa là điều quá quan trọng để trì hoãn; Chúa đến trước và xứng đáng với điều tốt nhất của chúng ta. Điều gì xảy ra nếu chủ nhà đến và chúng ta chưa sẵn sàng? Chúng ta vừa trải qua một tháng cầu nguyện cho các linh hồn nơi luyện ngục.
Họ là những người chưa hoàn toàn sẵn sàng khi chủ nhân của ngôi nhà đến đón họ. Bí tích Hòa Giải quá quan trọng để trì hoãn. Việc sẵn sàng cho Chúa là điều quá quan trọng để trì hoãn; Chúa đến trước và xứng đáng với điều tốt nhất của chúng ta. Hãy để Chúa Giêsu đến thăm trái tim và ngôi nhà của chúng ta trong lễ Giáng Sinh này. Thực sự chỉ có một món quà duy nhất vào dịp Giáng sinh, đó là Chúa Giêsu. Khi chuẩn bị lòng mình, chúng ta có thể nhớ rằng Chúa đã ban phước dồi dào cho chúng ta với rất nhiều phước lành thuộc linh.
Trong bài đọc thứ hai: Thánh Phaolô viết cho giáo đoàn Cô-rin-tô: “Tôi luôn tạ ơn Thiên Chúa của tôi vì anh em vì ân sủng Thiên Chúa đã ban cho anh em nơi Đức Giêsu Kitô, rằng trong Người anh em được phong phú mọi bề… đến nỗi, anh em được không thiếu ân tứ thuộc linh nào trong khi chờ đợi sự mặc khải của Chúa chúng ta là Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ. (1 Cô-rinh-tô 1 4-5,7)
Có một năm mới hạnh phúc. Và một niềm hy vọng lớn lao trong Mùa Vọng này

the First Sunday of Advent Year B 2023
Happy New year! Today is the first Sunday of a new liturgical calendar year B, and the first Sunday of Advent. Advent is a season of preparing for the coming of our Lord.
What are we preparing for? to put the Christmas lights on the street?
A few weeks ago, we were in Singapore and we already saw the Christmas decoration everywhere in the city. It was only the beginning of November. So, what do we do for Christmas? Will we have a special guest this Christmas? What are you preparing when you are expecting someone to visit you this Christmas?
Clean your house, make room ready for the guest?
In our spiritual lives, there is One who wants to spend time with us this Christmas and longs for us to spend time with him, it is the Lord Jesus. We will make this the best Christmas we have ever had by opening our heart and our home to Jesus. Let Jesus come to visit our heart and our home this Christmas. We must prepare for the visit of this special guest and get room in our heart ready for Him.
Today we start the 1st day of Advent season and Advent is a season of hope. It is a period when we await the fulfillment of the promise of God through his prophets. In addition to being a season of hope, it is equally a season of patience and prayer. During these four weeks of Advent, we are expected to prepare for the birth of the Messiah. It suffices to note that while we prepare physically, the most important must be spiritually prepared.
Advent is a special time of grace given to us to prepare for the visit of Jesus to our heart and home. In the Gospel today Jesus says: “Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come…What I say to you, I say to all: ‘Watch!’” (Mark 13:33,37)
In the first reading we heard: “We have all withered like leaves, and our guilt carries us away like the wind” (Isa 64:6). There is a grace offered to us in Advent to get our priorities right in our lives and then we can say with the prophet Isaiah in our first reading: “No ear has ever heard, no eye ever seen, any God but you doing such deeds for those who wait for him” (Isa 64:4)
To receive this priceless gift, we must leave all of our sins and turn towards Jesus. That is why receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation is an important part of watching and preparing our hearts during Advent. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is too important to postpone.
Remember the words of Jesus in the Gospel: “Watch, therefore; you do not know when the lord of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning. May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to all: ‘Watch!’” (Mark 13:35-37)
Being ready for God is too important to postpone; God comes first and deserves our best. What happens if the lord of the house comes and we are not ready? We have just spent a month praying for the souls in purgatory.
They were those who were not completely ready when the lord of the house came for them. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is too important to postpone. Being ready for God is too important to postpone; God comes first and deserves our best. So, please take time and go to the confession this week or next 2 – 3 weeks. I know Fr. Donahue likes to seat the confessional every day and wait for us. Don’t wait because we won’t know what would happen tomorrow. Let’s us plan well for the coming of our Lord.
There is One who wants to spend time with us this Christmas and longs for us to spend time with him, is the Lord Jesus. Make this the best Christmas we have ever had by opening our heart and home to Jesus. Let Jesus come to visit our heart and our home this Christmas. There is really only one gift at Christmas, is Jesus. As we prepare our hearts, we can remember that the Lord has richly blessed us with so many spiritual blessings.
In the second reading: saint Paul wrote to the Corinthians: “I give thanks to my God always on your account for the grace of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus, that in him you were enriched in every way…so that, you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Cor 1 4-5,7)
1st Sunday of Advent Year B
“Jesus said to his disciples: “Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.” Mark 13:33
To which time is our Lord referring? He is referring to the time of His coming. But it must be understood that even though He came to us once in the flesh long ago, and though He will return again in the flesh to judge the living and the dead at the end of time, He never ceases to come to us day and night by the transforming gift of grace. Are you attentive to this coming? Or do you miss out on the countless blessings of God’s grace that He wants to bestow upon you every day, all day?
The world has many distractions. We are distracted by the lure of riches, the indulgence of our appetites, and the constant noise of modern media, electronic gadgets and the like. These and many other daily distractions make it very difficult to be constantly “watchful” and “alert.” This is because our attention span is limited. Though some may learn to “multi-task” to a certain extent, no one can continually divide their attention between the presence of God and the distractions of the world.
Some may argue that it is necessary to engage the world today. It is not possible to continually pray and think only about God. But those who would be tempted to think this do not understand the attentiveness and watchfulness to which we are called.
Being watchful and attentive simply means that God is central in our lives and is the motivation and purpose of all we do every day. Our love for and service to God cannot be divided. We cannot set aside some time for the world and other times for God. Instead, everything we do, every day, all day, must have the glory of God and the fulfillment of God’s perfect will as the central and exclusive purpose of our lives. Thus, if we interact with the world, tune into social media, fulfill household chores, put in extra hours at work, etc., we must constantly ponder the simple question, “Lord, am I doing this for Your glory and in accord with Your will?” We must never fail to ask ourselves that question. We must always have the glory of God and the fulfillment of His will as the central purpose and motivation for all that we do. If we can live this way, then we will discover that it becomes increasingly easy to always and everywhere be attentive to and watchful for God’s will.
Reflect, today, upon that to which you most often turn your attention. What is it that you think about the most each day? To what are you most attentive and watchful? If the answer to that question is not the ongoing promptings of God and His grace, then make note of that fact. Humbly pray that you can change and begin to form a transforming habit of daily keeping your attention on our Lord so that He will become your daily guide and focus in all things.
Lord of all grace, You come to me day and night, speaking to me, calling me and desiring to guide me. May I learn to turn my full attention to You every day so that nothing but You and Your holy will lead me always. Jesus, I trust in You.

Opening Prayer: Lord, as we begin this new season of Advent, awaken my spirit within me so that I may be ready at every moment to recognize your presence in my life today and every day.
1. Pay Attention: Jesus had just given his discourse on what seemed to be the end of times, and his own passion and death. He does not intend to frighten us, but to call us to repentance and spiritual alertness. Jesus knows we can grow tired very easily....not just physically tired, but spiritually tired. Prayer can become routine--not a heartfelt conversation with him. As we go through the motions of our prayer, we might miss the movements the Lord wants to make in our soul. Jesus is inviting us during the season of Advent to regroup and “pay attention” when we pray.

We must prepare for the visit of this special guest and get room in our heart ready for Him.
Today we start the 1st day of Advent season and Advent is a season of hope. It is a period when we await the fulfillment of the promise of God through his prophets. In addition to being a season of hope, it is equally a season of patience and prayer. During these four weeks of Advent, we are expected to prepare for the birth of the Messiah. It suffices to note that while we prepare physically, the most important must be spiritually prepared.
Advent is a special time of grace given to us to prepare for the visit of Jesus to our heart and home. In the Gospel today Jesus says: “Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come…What I say to you, I say to all: ‘Watch!’” (Mark 13:33,37)
In the first reading we heard: “We have all withered like leaves, and our guilt carries us away like the wind” (Isa 64:6). There is a grace offered to us in Advent to get our priorities right in our lives and then we can say with the prophet Isaiah in our first reading: “No ear has ever heard, no eye ever seen, any God but you doing such deeds for those who wait for him” (Isa 64:4)
To receive this priceless gift, we must leave all of our sins and turn towards Jesus. That is why receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation is an important part of watching and preparing our hearts during Advent. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is too important to postpone.
Remember the words of Jesus in the Gospel: “Watch, therefore; you do not know when the lord of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning. May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to all: ‘Watch!’” (Mark 13:35-37)
Being ready for God is too important to postpone; God comes first and deserves our best. What happens if the lord of the house comes and we are not ready? We have just spent a month praying for the souls in purgatory.
They were those who were not completely ready when the lord of the house came for them. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is too important to postpone. Being ready for God is too important to postpone; God comes first and deserves our best. So, please take time and go to the confession this week or next 2 – 3 weeks. I know Fr. Donahue likes to seat the confessional every day and wait for us. Don’t wait because we won’t know what would happen tomorrow. Let’s us plan well for the coming of our Lord.
There is One who wants to spend time with us this Christmas and longs for us to spend time with him, is the Lord Jesus. Make this the best Christmas we have ever had by opening our heart and home to Jesus. Let Jesus come to visit our heart and our home this Christmas. There is really only one gift at Christmas, is Jesus. As we prepare our hearts, we can remember that the Lord has richly blessed us with so many spiritual blessings.
In the second reading: saint Paul wrote to the Corinthians: “I give thanks to my God always on your account for the grace of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus, that in him you were enriched in every way…so that, you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Cor 1 4-5,7)
1st Sunday of Advent Year B
“Jesus said to his disciples: “Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.” Mark 13:33
To which time is our Lord referring? He is referring to the time of His coming. But it must be understood that even though He came to us once in the flesh long ago, and though He will return again in the flesh to judge the living and the dead at the end of time, He never ceases to come to us day and night by the transforming gift of grace. Are you attentive to this coming? Or do you miss out on the countless blessings of God’s grace that He wants to bestow upon you every day, all day?
The world has many distractions. We are distracted by the lure of riches, the indulgence of our appetites, and the constant noise of modern media, electronic gadgets and the like. These and many other daily distractions make it very difficult to be constantly “watchful” and “alert.” This is because our attention span is limited. Though some may learn to “multi-task” to a certain extent, no one can continually divide their attention between the presence of God and the distractions of the world.
Some may argue that it is necessary to engage the world today. It is not possible to continually pray and think only about God. But those who would be tempted to think this do not understand the attentiveness and watchfulness to which we are called.
Being watchful and attentive simply means that God is central in our lives and is the motivation and purpose of all we do every day. Our love for and service to God cannot be divided. We cannot set aside some time for the world and other times for God. Instead, everything we do, every day, all day, must have the glory of God and the fulfillment of God’s perfect will as the central and exclusive purpose of our lives. Thus, if we interact with the world, tune into social media, fulfill household chores, put in extra hours at work, etc., we must constantly ponder the simple question, “Lord, am I doing this for Your glory and in accord with Your will?” We must never fail to ask ourselves that question. We must always have the glory of God and the fulfillment of His will as the central purpose and motivation for all that we do. If we can live this way, then we will discover that it becomes increasingly easy to always and everywhere be attentive to and watchful for God’s will.
Reflect, today, upon that to which you most often turn your attention. What is it that you think about the most each day? To what are you most attentive and watchful? If the answer to that question is not the ongoing promptings of God and His grace, then make note of that fact. Humbly pray that you can change and begin to form a transforming habit of daily keeping your attention on our Lord so that He will become your daily guide and focus in all things.
Lord of all grace, You come to me day and night, speaking to me, calling me and desiring to guide me. May I learn to turn my full attention to You every day so that nothing but You and Your holy will lead me always. Jesus, I trust in You.
Opening Prayer: Lord, as we begin this new season of Advent, awaken my spirit within me so that I may be ready at every moment to recognize your presence in my life today and every day.
1. Pay Attention: Jesus had just given his discourse on what seemed to be the end of times, and his own passion and death. He does not intend to frighten us, but to call us to repentance and spiritual alertness. Jesus knows we can grow tired very easily....not just physically tired, but spiritually tired. Prayer can become routine--not a heartfelt conversation with him. As we go through the motions of our prayer, we might miss the movements the Lord wants to make in our soul. Jesus is inviting us during the season of Advent to regroup and “pay attention” when we pray.
