Bài Tin Mừng hôm nay, chúng ta được nghe nói về nguồn gốc và tổ tiên của Chúa Giêsu được bắt đầu từ thời ông Abraham. Khi được nghe bản gia phả nói về dòng dõi của Chúa Giêsu hôm nay, chúng ta có thể thắc mắc là chúng ta sẽ học được điều gì hay đã được thâu hạch những thiêng liêng cho tâm hồn của chúng ta hôm nay.
Theo như chúng ta biêt Thánh Mathêuô là một Người Do Thái, vì thế khi viết Tin Mừng Mathêuô ông đã chú trọng cách riêng là viết cho người Do Thái đọc và để chứng minh cho họ biết là Chúa Giêsu đến, bằng nhiều cách sẽ thực hiện những lời hứa của Thiên Chúa là cho một đấng Cứu thế đến giữa dân của Ngài để cứu chuộc tội lỗi họ như lời Ngài đã hứa. Do đó, Mathêô đã bao gồm những dấu tích lịch sử của Israel để tìm ra tung tích gốc gác của Chúa Giêsu và đã chứng minh được là Chúa Giêsu là người thuộc dòng dõi vua "David, và của tổ phụ Abraham".
` Còn Phần Tin Mừng của Thánh Luca thì khác hẳn, ông Luca là người ngoại bang nên ông đã quan tâm để ý viết Tin Mừng cho những người dân ngoại để họ biết rằng Chúa Giêsu là một con người thật sự và Chúa Giêsu cũng là con người giống như tất cả mọi người như chúng ta có nguồn gốc từ tổ tiên loài người là ông Adong. Trong những khoản khắc khác nhau và bằng nhiều cách khác nhau, đã có trong lịch sử của Giáo Hội, trong đó bao gồm cả thời đại hiện tại của chúng ta, một số người có thể đã có xu hướng nghĩ rằng Chúa Giêsu cũng chỉ là một con người bình thường như chúng ta, Ngài là một thuyết trình viên có khiếu ăn nói tuyệt vời hay là một người chuyên môn làm những phép lạ ở giữa nơi cộng cộng, không có gì để nghi ngờ nữa vì Ngài cũng chỉ là một người bình thường như bất cứ một người nào đó thôi. Những điều này là để đưa đến một kết luận là quan điểm của thánh Luca không thể chấp nhận được, Nhưng chúng ta biết rằng Thánh Luca không bao giờ có một ý định như thế.
Qua bản gia phả chúng ta nghe hôm nay đã chỉ rõ cho chúng ta biết và hiểu thêm đến các khía cạnh về những mầu nhiệm của Chúa Giêsu được phát triển, giải thích rõ ràng và đầy đủ hơn trong những Tin Mừng, để tỏ ra cho chúng ta biết rõ về thiên tính của Chúa Giêsu Kitô , cũng như truyền đạt cho chúng ta hiểu rõ sự thật mà chúng ta đã được hưởng nhờ đó chúng ta đã được ơn cứu rỗi..
Lạy Chúa Thánh Thần, trong khi chúng con nhớ lại bản gia phả về dòng dõi gia đình xác thịt con người trong nhân loại của Chúa Giêsu tại thành Nazareth, Xin Thánh Thần Chúa giúp chúng con biết đào sâu đức tin của chúng con trong thiên tính của Ngài và nhờ đó để giúp chúng con có thêm niềm hy vọng trong ơn nghĩa của Chúa Phục Sinh

Qua đoạn trong Phúc Âm hôm nay, Thánh Matthêu cho chúng ta thấy nguồn gốc của xác thịt con người của Chúa Giêsu, để chứng minh rằng chúa Giêsu cũng là con người phàm xác thịt như chúng ta, cũng có cha, có mẹ, có ông bà tổ tiên. Phúc âm cũng cho chúng ta biết tầm quan trọng của nguồn gốc của con người, của gia đình. Cũng như Chúa Giêsu, cũng có một gia đình, có cha là Giuse và mẹ là Maria, môt gia đình luôn yêu thương và biết hy sinh cho nhau. Chúa Giêsu yêu thương quý trọng cha mẹ mình và là một tấm gương tốt sáng cho tất cả chúng ta biết rằng chúng ta cũng phải tôn trọng và vâng lời cha mẹ.
Qua phép rửa, tất cả chúng ta đã thuộc về gia đình của Thiên Chúa, Chúng ta đều là con cái Thiên Chúa, Thiên Chúa là Cha chúng ta ở trên trời, và có nhiều chỗ ở cho dành riêng cho chúng ta ở trên đó và Chúa Giêsu đã đi trước để chuẩn bị một nơi cho mỗi người chúng ta.
Giống như người con hoang đàng đã một lần sa ngã, lầm lỡ sống trong tội lỗi và đã xa lìa Thiên Chúa, chúng ta chỉ cần đến với Cha chúng ta ở trên trời với lòng ăn năn, sám hối, Ngài luôn luôn sẵn sàng chờ đợi và đón mừng khi chúng ta trở về với vòng tay rộng mở của ngài. Chúa đang mong chờ chúng ta trong bí tích Hòa giải, chúng ta đã sãn sàng đến và làm hòa với Chúa chưa? Nhất là trong những ngày mà chúng ta đang chuẩn bị đón mừng Chúa trong Giáng Sinh, làm người.

Do you know who your ancestors were, where they came from, and what they passed on from their generation to the next? Genealogies are very important. They give us our roots and help us to understand our heritage. Matthew's genealogy of Jesus traces his lineage from Abraham, the father of God's chosen people, through the line of David, King of Israel. Jesus the Messiah is the direct descent of Abraham and David, and the rightful heir to David's throne. God in his mercy fulfilled his promises to Abraham and to David that he would send a Savior and a King to rule over the house of Israel and to deliver them from their enemies.
The Lord Jesus is the fulfillment of all God's promises
When Jacob blessed his sons he foretold that Judah would receive the promise of royalty which we see fulfilled in David (Genesis 49:10). We can also see in this blessing a foreshadowing of God's fulfillment in raising up his anointed King, Jesus the Messiah. Jesus is the fulfillment of all God's promises. He is the hope not only for the people of the Old Covenant but for all nations as well. He is the Savior of the world who redeems us from slavery to sin and Satan and makes us citizens of the kingdom of God. In him we receive adoption into a royal priesthood and holy nation as sons and daughters of the living God (see 1 Peter 1:9). Do you recognize your spiritual genealogy and do you accept God as your Father and Jesus as the sovereign King and Lord of your life?
"Lord Jesus Christ, you are the Messiah and Savior of the world, the hope of Israel and the hope of the nations. Be the ruler of my heart and the king of my home. May there be nothing in my life that is not under your wise rule and care."

When we read or hear this genealogy, family record, of Jesus, we may wonder what spiritual fruit we can draw from it. Matthew and Luke, the two evangelists two give such a genealogy, differ greatly in their list of names as they approach the matter differently. Matthew, a Jew, is concerned in his Gospel to show that Jesus was the fulfillment of the promises of a redeemer which God in various ways made to Israel. Hence he is content to trace Jesus’ family record back to “David, son of Abraham”.
Luke, on the other hand, was a Gentile and was keen to show that Jesus was a human being and like all of us was descended from Adam. At various times and in different ways, there in the history of the Church, including our present age, some people can tend to think of Jesus as just a human being, a great teacher and a worker of apparent miracles, no doubt but merely a man. This is to carry Luke's perspective to an unacceptable conclusion, one he never intended. The genealogies point to aspects of the mystery of Jesus which are developed more fully in the Gospel, to reveal to us his divinity and convey to us the truth that sets us free.
Holy Spirit, as we recall the human family record of Jesus of Nazareth, deepen our faith in his divinity and so strengthen our hope in his gift of the Resurrection

Suy niệm Tin Mừng, Dec 18 Matthew 1:18-25
Trong phúc âm hôm nay, chúng ta thấy sự yếu hèn của Thánh Giuse, Vì ngài cũng chỉ là con người như thấp hèn như chúng ta. Nhưng với là con người thích sự công chính, và nhờ vào sự cầu nguyện và tin vào lời của Thiên Chúa, mà thánh Giuse đã nhận Đức Maria làm vợ và nhận đứa trẻ trong lòng bà là Đấng Cứu Thế như lời đã hứa. Cũng Như Đức Mẹ, Thánh Giuse là một mô hình của đức tin cho chúng ta, Nhờ Thánh Giuse là một người công chính, một nhân chứng trung thành mà một phần kế hoạch cứu rỗi của Thiên Chúa đã được thực hiện.
Còn chúng ta, chúng ta đã sẵn sàng để tin vào lời Chúa đã hứa,? Ngay cả trong những khi chúng ta phải đối mặt với hoàn cảnh khó khăn bối rối và những vấn đề nan giản không lối thoát?
Thiên Chúa đã không để cho chúng ta phải mồ côi một mình, nhưng Ngài đã đem chính Con một của Ngài là Đức Giêsu Kitô, Đấng Cứu Thế đến với chúng ta. Vì vậy chúng ta hãy nên chuẩn bị tâm hồn để đón mừng Chúa Giáng sinh, Chúa Nhập Thể với tâm hồn trong sang và vui tươi. Chúng ta cũng hãy canh tân đức tin và niềm hy vọng của chúng ta vào Thiên Chúa và trong công cuộc cứu chuộc của Ngài.
Lạy Chúa Giêsu, xin Chúa đến để cứu chúng con thoát khỏi mọi tội lỗi và sức mạnh của sự chết, Xin Cho chúng con luôn luôn được vui mừng với sự cứu rỗi của Chúa và luôn biết tin tưởng vào những kế hoạch thiêng liêng mà Chúa đã sắp sẵn cho con.
REFLECTION
Joseph was a just man. In the Bible, as consequently in our Christian life, the justice which matters most is never any mere human social or political justice but only the justice of God. Joseph’s justice, as well as his relationship with Mary, is only known to us from Scripture. The Word of God, is therefore revealed to us only as part of the mystery of the Incarnation. A first superficial and common notion is that Matthew accepted that Joseph was just with respect to the law of Moses, which seemed to demand that, not knowing how Mary came to be pregnant, he should divorce Mary, but being a kindly man, he decided to do this “quietly” or secretly. This notion, however, is not adequate or commensurate with the whole atmosphere of holiness and divine mystery which pervades the whole Gospel account. A more reasonable explanation is that Joseph was a holy man, sensitive to the presence of God and this would have naturally led him to the realization that somehow Mary’s situation was the work of God and that he should withdraw so as not to interfere with God's work. Teach us, Lord, to be just and sensitive to Your presence in our lives so that we may never be a hindrance to Your work

Gentle Righteousness: Joseph was faced with a devastating series of events. He had become betrothed to Mary in a binding religious ceremony, committing to her as his wife. Since the precepts of his time dictated a waiting period between the formal betrothal and taking her into his home as his wife, her pregnancy was a terrible shock to him. He had every reason to believe that his betrothed wife had been unfaithful. Yet, instead of bringing down the full wrath of the law on Mary, he planned to divorce her quietly. She could have been put to death for adultery, and Joseph, as heartbroken and mortified as he must have been, simply did not want that. What a gentle and kind heart he must have had. Are we as gracious and kind when we believe we have been wronged?

Trong Tin Mừng hôm nay, chúng ta được nghe kể là Đức Maria đã đính hôn với Thánh Giuse và mỗi người đang còn sống riêng trong thời gian tìm hiểu. Theo phong tục Do Thái thì khoảng thời gian tìm hiểu này là khoảng một năm, Trong thời gian đó hai người sống với gia đình riêng của họ, vẫn tách biệt không gần gũi nhau. Vì vậy, khi biết Đức Maria đã thụ thai, thì việc này coi như thể là Đức Maria đã phạm tội ngoại tình và phản bội Thánh Giuse trong thời gian của mà họ đang hứa hôn. Theo như luật Môisen, Đức Maria sẽ bị ném đá cho đến chết vì đó là hình phạt cho tội ngoại tình.
Reflection Dec 18
When Joseph received the angel’s message, he could not have understood exactly how, through the power of the Holy Spirit, God had become a human being in Mary’s womb. However, he chose to trust God's message. In the midst of this difficult situation, he chose not to be afraid. He chose to say ‘yes’ to God.
The story of Jesus’ birth includes people taking risks in God. Instead of agreeing to only what they could understand or control, both Mary and Joseph choose to trust deeply in God even when they cannot see the road ahead. It is precisely in such moments of vulnerability and deep trust in God that our faith grows. Such trust pleases God. Such cooperation leads to blessing for our lives and blessing for those around us.
Lord, help me not to be afraid. Help me to recognize and trust Your voice in my life.
Reflection:
We cannot underplay the role of both Mary and Joseph in our salvation history. What a leap of faith it was for Mary, who was a very young girl at that time of the angel's visit, to accept an illogical message that she was pregnant even without relations with a man! She knew deep in her heart that this was part of God's divine plan and that she was chosen to have an integral part in it. Even Joseph had his share of shock with the visit of the angel of God in his dream! Despite his natural reaction of planning to divorce Mary, he ungrudgingly and willingly obeyed and brought Mary home as his wife and gave the name of Jesus to his son. We cannot imagine how our salvation history would pan out if either Mary or Joseph had doubts about the message of the angel and refused to follow! We, too, need to be humble and empty ourselves of our own plans, of our own desires which are not aligned to God's will and plan for our lives. Have we ever heard God speak to us through the Holy Spirit and call us to do something, yet we delay since we think it is impossible, or because what He is asking us to do is difficult and outside of our comfort zone? Maybe we are not following God's call because we feel we are not capable of doing it. God only wants what is best for us, so delaying in taking action on His call will mean delay in achieving success.

Since the precepts of his time dictated a waiting period between the formal betrothal and taking her into his home as his wife, her pregnancy was a terrible shock to him. He had every reason to believe that his betrothed wife had been unfaithful. Yet, instead of bringing down the full wrath of the law on Mary, he planned to divorce her quietly. She could have been put to death for adultery, and Joseph, as heartbroken and mortified as he must have been, simply did not want that. What a gentle and kind heart he must have had. Are we as gracious and kind when we believe we have been wronged?

Theo phong tục Do Thái thì khoảng thời gian tìm hiểu này là khoảng một năm, Trong thời gian đó hai người sống với gia đình riêng của họ, vẫn tách biệt không gần gũi nhau. Vì vậy, khi biết Đức Maria đã thụ thai, thì việc này coi như thể là Đức Maria đã phạm tội ngoại tình và phản bội Thánh Giuse trong thời gian của mà họ đang hứa hôn. Theo như luật Môisen, Đức Maria sẽ bị ném đá cho đến chết vì đó là hình phạt cho tội ngoại tình.
When Joseph received the angel’s message, he could not have understood exactly how, through the power of the Holy Spirit, God had become a human being in Mary’s womb. However, he chose to trust God's message. In the midst of this difficult situation, he chose not to be afraid. He chose to say ‘yes’ to God.
The story of Jesus’ birth includes people taking risks in God. Instead of agreeing to only what they could understand or control, both Mary and Joseph choose to trust deeply in God even when they cannot see the road ahead. It is precisely in such moments of vulnerability and deep trust in God that our faith grows. Such trust pleases God. Such cooperation leads to blessing for our lives and blessing for those around us.
Lord, help me not to be afraid. Help me to recognize and trust Your voice in my life.
We cannot underplay the role of both Mary and Joseph in our salvation history. What a leap of faith it was for Mary, who was a very young girl at that time of the angel's visit, to accept an illogical message that she was pregnant even without relations with a man! She knew deep in her heart that this was part of God's divine plan and that she was chosen to have an integral part in it. Even Joseph had his share of shock with the visit of the angel of God in his dream! Despite his natural reaction of planning to divorce Mary, he ungrudgingly and willingly obeyed and brought Mary home as his wife and gave the name of Jesus to his son. We cannot imagine how our salvation history would pan out if either Mary or Joseph had doubts about the message of the angel and refused to follow! We, too, need to be humble and empty ourselves of our own plans, of our own desires which are not aligned to God's will and plan for our lives. Have we ever heard God speak to us through the Holy Spirit and call us to do something, yet we delay since we think it is impossible, or because what He is asking us to do is difficult and outside of our comfort zone? Maybe we are not following God's call because we feel we are not capable of doing it. God only wants what is best for us, so delaying in taking action on His call will mean delay in achieving success.
