Suy Niệm Tin Mừng Chúa Nhật Giáng Sinh.

Bài Thánh Vịnh đáp ca mời gọi chúng ta hát một lên bài ca mới để chúc tụng Thiên Chúa. Chúng ta hát một bài ca mới vì "Thiên Chúa đã tỏ ra cho thiên hạ bết ơn Cứu rỗi của Ngài”, không phải chi qua những lời của các tiên tri bây giờ, cũng không phải là qua nhiều lời hứa của Thiên Chúa qua Cựu Ước, nhưng là việc Người Con trẻ đã được sinh ra cho chúng ta trong hang tối Belem. Trong sự kiện mới tuyệt vời này Thiên Chúa đã nhớ đến Chân lý và tình yêu của Ngài.

Qua Cựu Ước chung ta có thể được tóm tắt là bời vì Thiên Chúa vẫn còn nhớ lai những lời giao ức, nhưng dân Israe thì dã quên, Thiên Chúa nhớ lại, không phải vì tội lỗi của chúng ta, nhưng vì lời Hứa của Ngài, Chân lý, Sự Thật và Tình Yêu của Ngài. Con Người ở Do Thái rất dễ dàng quên đi Thiên Chúa và lời Giao Ước với Thên Chúa và họ đã lạm dụng những hồng ân tặng tuyệt vời của Thiên Chúa, cho dù là ơn sủng là được tạo thành, và những ân sủng của lòng Thương xót sự tha thứ của Thiên Chúa. Điều gì là sự thật thì tất cả là sự thật: chúng ta thường hay lãng phí những tài năng và ân sủng mà Thiên Chúa đã ban cho chúng ta.

Với hồng ân của Chúa Giêsu, thì đó là hồng ân của sự khôn ngoan. Hồng ân của sự khôn ngoan thì hướng dẫn cho chúng ta phải hành động liên tục hơn trong sự hiệp nhất với Chúa Giêsu để xây dựng Nước Thiên Chúa trên trần gian. Bằng những ân sủng và hồng ân của Chúa Giêsu và nhờ Đức Giêsu, Thiên Chúa vẫn tiếp tục tạo dựng nên chúng ta theo và giống như hình ảnh riêng của Ngài. Ngài vẫn luôn liên tục nuôi dưỡng và yêu thương chúng ta trong chân lý vĩnh cửu của Ngài và tình yêu ấy đã trở thành xác phàm trong Chúa Giêsu.

Lạy Chúa là Thiên Chúa, xin cho chúng con luôn luôn nhớ đến Chân Lý và Tình Yêu của Chúa. Xin Chúa luôn tiếp tục tái tạo lại chúng con theo hình ảnh của Chúa và được giống như o chúng con được trở nên giống như Chúa Giêsu Kitô mỗi ngày ột nhiều hơn.

Chúa Giê Su Kytô đã được sinh ra! Ngôi Hai vĩnh cửu của Ba Ngôi Chí Thánh đã xuống trần làm người như chúng ta. Lời Chúa, đã trở nên xác thịt và ở giữa chúng ta. Việc Giáng sinh của Chúa Kitô đã trong chuồng cừu này có ý nghĩa gì đối với tôi, đối với anh chị em, đối với thế giới?

Việc giáng sinh của Chúa Kitô có nghĩa là thực tế của nhân loại đang được thay đổi mong chóng. Trước Chúa Giêsu, con người chỉ là một bản thể vật chất. Chúa Kitô được sinh ra để có thể chất và thần tính của Thiên Chúa, nhưng Chúa Kitô của chúng ta đã từ bỏ bỏ thiên tính của Thiên Chúa trước sức mạnh của ma quỷ. Sự nắm bắt của ma quỷ vẫn còn từng trải trong nhiều người đang hướng về các giá trị thế tục của cuộc sống để tìm kiếm hy vọng, sự thỏa mãn và sự cứu rỗi. Sự quyến rũ, danh tiếng, quyền lực, uy tín và tiền bạc luôn là mối quan tâm của họ và nghị lực của họ đang hướng tới. Chúa Kitô là nguồn hy vọng cho thấy rõ là ngay từ những giây phút đầu tiên của cuộc đời sau khi sinh ra chúng ta đã tìm thấy được hy vọng trong Thiên Chúa, nhưng không phải ở bất kỳ hình thức vật chất n

Chúng ta có thấy buồn không khi nhiều người đã biến ngày kỷ niệm sự ra đời của một em bé trong chuồng cừu thành một ngày lễ của những xa hoa phù phiếm dầy vật chất?

Khi Thánh Phanxicô thành Assisi, người đã ôm lấy cái sự Nghèo khó, dựng lại cảnh Chúa giáng sinh đầu tiên vào năm 1223 tại Grecio, Ý, ngài kêu gọi mọi người ca tụng cuộc đời của Đấng Nghèo khó thực sự là Đấng Cứu Rỗi của chúng ta.

Chúa Giêsu Kytô là Đấng Cứu Rỗi của chúng ta. Tên của Ngài là Jesus, có nghĩa là Chúa cứu. Chúng ta cần có khả năng để phục hồi linh hồn của chúng ta. Chúng ta cần được cứu khỏi cái chết đời đời. Chúng ta cần được cứu khỏi quyền lực của sự dữ, của ma quỷ và sự thống trị của Satan. Chúng ta phải làm sao? Làm thế nào mà Ngài cứu được chúng ta?

Chúa Giêsu đã đáp lại sự căm ghét, hận thù của ma quỷ bằng Tình yêu của Thiên Chúa. Ngài đã để cho ma quỷ đối xữ với Ngài một cách tệ bạc nhất và ác độc nhất, vì sự vâng lời Chúa Cha và tình yêu thương dành cho con người chúng ta, những tạo vật mà được Thiên Chúa tạo thành theo hình ảnh của Thiên Chúa và được giống như Thiên Chúa. Chúa Giêsu Kitô được sinh ra trong nghèo hèn được đặt trong máng cỏ để rồi bị giết chết trên thập giá. Satan, kẻ từng là Lucifer, Người mang ánh sáng, muốn giống như Chúa. Satan và những kẻ theo ma quỷ tà ác của satan đã bị đuổi khỏi thiên đường bởi một thiên thần Michael, tên Michael của người có nghĩa là "Ai có thể giống như Thiên Chúa?"

Sa-tan đã gây chiến với con người tạo vật giống có hình ảnh giống như Thiên Chúa. Satan nói với ông A-dong loài người, và bà Ê-va, mẹ của những người sống, và phần còn lại của chúng ta rằng nếu chúng ta đắm mình trong vật chất, chúng ta có thể giống như Thiên Chúa, các thiên thần. Nhưng kết quả của việc mà chúng ta từ chối và đẩy xa Thiên Chúa ra khỏi cuộc sống của chúng ta hoàn toàn khác với sự mong đợi. Việc chối bỏ Thiên Chúa không khiến chúng ta trở thành thiên thần hay như các thánh. Thay vào đó, thế giới của chúng ta sẽ tràn ngập những hận thù và chết chóc. Nhưng Thiên Chúa vẫn luôn yêu chúng ta. Kế hoạch của Sa-tan là lợi dụng tình yêu thương của Thiên Chúa dành cho chúng ta để chống lại Thiên Chúa. Nếu Thiên Chúa trở thành con người như chúng ta, ma quỷ sẽ tiêu diệt Ngài bằng lòng căm thù và sự chết. SA tan nghĩ rằng chắc chắn, nhân loại sẽ nhận ra Thiên Chúa bất lực và Sa-tan có quyền năng như thế nào. Có lẽ Satan nghĩ rằng sau đó ma quỷ có thể chinh phục được thiên đàng.

Nhưng với cái chết của Ngôi Lời đã làm cho thân xác không mang lại chiến thắng của sự hận thù. Nhưng lại mang một sự chiến thắng của tình yêu. Và Sa-tan thấy được những tạo vật đã mất linh hồn, nay được phục hồi cuộc sống thiêng liêng trong Chúa. thiên thần trong Sách Khải Huyền cất tiếng gọi. "Ai có thể mở Sách Kế hoạch của Thiên Chúa?" Chỉ có con Chiên Con bị giết mới có thể làm được điều đó. Hài nhi trong máng cỏ, Chúa Giêsu, Đấng Cứu Thế, đã dẫn đến sự khải hoàn của Thiên Chúa. Tình yêu chinh phục tất cả.

Một đại lễ đáng nhớ đó là đại lễ ghi lại sự cứu rỗi của Thiên Chúa cho chúng ta, Sự sống trong Thiên Chúa làm cho tất cả cuộc sống của nhân loại chúng ta được trở nên đáng sống.

Cầu xin Chúa ban an bình của Chúa Giêsu, Đấng Cứu thế đến với tất cả chúng ta và ở lại với chúng ta luôn mãi mãi. Và sự bình yên này là gì? Đó không phải là sự kết thúc của chiến tranh, mặc dù chúng ta không ngừng cầu nguyện cho sự kết thúc tất cả các cuộc chiến tranh trên thế giới. Đó cũng không phải là sự hòa thuận hoàn toàn trong tất cả các gia đình của chúng ta, mặc dù chúng ta liên tục cầu nguyện xin cho các gia đình của chúng ta được bình an. The Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord: 

Pax Christi! Merry Christmas, everyone. May the Peace of Christ that draws us to the humble stable of Bethlehem, fill our minds and hearts. May our families have peace. May our country and our Church have peace. Every year brings with it unexpected blessings, and unexpected challenges. This year has been no different than any other. No matter what life has brought us, there is something extremely beautiful that at the end of the year we are celebrating our reason for hope. Jesus the Christ has been born! The eternal Second Person of the Holy Trinity, the Word of God, has become flesh and dwelt among us. What does this birth in a stable mean to me, to you, to the world? It means that mankind’s reality is being drastically changed. Before Jesus, man was merely a physical being. He was created to be physical and spiritual, but he forfeited his capacity for the spiritual to the power of evil. The grasp of evil is still experienced in many people turning to the secular values of life to find hope, fulfillment and salvation. Glamour, fame, power, prestige and money preoccupy much of their attention and energy. Many people, and perhaps, to some degree all of us, look for hope in the wrong places. Jesus Christ is the source of hope. His life is the antithesis of those secular values that so many grasp and that lead so many to despair. He is the King of Kings, yet He is born in a stable. Our nativity scenes often whitewash the fact that stables are dirty places, stinky places. We contemplate Jesus in a manger for his throne, but we forget that a manger is a place for animals to get their food. The One who is the source of hope makes it clear from the first moments of his life outside of his mother that hope is found in God, not in materialism of any sort. Isn’t it sad that many have transformed the day we celebrate the birth of a child in a stable into a celebration of materialism? When St. Francis of Assisi, the man who embraced Lady Poverty, built the first nativity scene in 1223 in Grecio, Italy, he called upon people to celebrate the life of the Poor One who was in fact our Savior.

Jesus Christ is our Savior. His name, Jesus, means God saves. We needed to have our capacity for the spiritual restored. We needed to be saved from eternal death. We needed to be saved from the power of evil, the dominance of Satan. How? How is it that He saves us? Jesus responded to the hatred of the devil with the Love of God. He let evil do its worst to Him, out of obedience to the Father and love for those creatures made in God’s image and likeness. He was born and placed in a manger so He could die on a cross. Satan, the one who had been Lucifer, the Light Bearer, wanted to be like God. He and his evil followers were cast out of heaven by another angel, Michael, whose name means “Who can be like God?”

Satan than waged war on the creature made in the image and likeness of God. He told Adam, mankind, Eve, mother of the living, and the rest of us that if we immerse ourselves in the material we could be like God, gods ourselves. But the result of our pushing God out of our lives was radically different than expected. It did not make us gods. Instead, our world was filled with hatred, and death. Even worse, infinitely worse, we no longer possessed the life of God, the spiritual life.

But God still loved us. Satan’s plan was to use God’s love for us against Him. If God were to become a man, the devil would destroy Him with hatred and death. Surely, mankind would realize how powerless God was and how powerful Satan was. Perhaps Satan thought that he could then conquer heaven. But the death of the Word made Flesh did not bring about a triumph of hatred. It brought a triumph of love. And Satan saw those creatures who had forfeited the spiritual, have their spiritual lives restored. “Who can open the Book of God’s Plan?” the angel in the Book of Revelation calls out. Only the Lamb who was slain could do that. The birth of the child in the manger, Jesus, the Savior, resulted in the Triumph of God. Love conquers all.

Today is a day of love. It is a day when families and friends express their deep love for each other. The gifts we give each other are mere tokens of our love for each other. We want to love today. But sin holds us back from loving. We cannot truly love the brother, the sister, the parent, the child, for whom we still harbor a grudge. The sinful person cannot love. Sin and love cannot coexist. But, sin can be and will be forgiven by the Savior. The thought that has been playing in my mind throughout Advent is that we cannot love the child in the manger unless we trust the man on the cross. Jesus came to forgive sins. He came to restore life. He came to restore love.

In the Church we have a season for Christmas and a season for Easter. We prepare for each by Advent and Lent. But really, there is just one celebration. That one celebration is the celebration of our salvation, the celebration of the Life that makes all life worth living.

“Pax Christi!” we shout out today and every day. May the Peace of Christ come upon you and remain with you forever. And what is this peace? It is not the cessation of wars, although we continually pray for an end of all war. It is not complete harmony in all our families, although we continually pray that our families be at peace. The peace of Christ is that which flows from union with God. The more we keep God in the center of our lives, then the greater that we will experience the peace of His Son.

A child is born for us today. A Savior is given to us. He restores our spiritual life. He gives our lives meaning and purpose and fulfillment. May we view every challenge and every joy from the perspective of the One who is the Center of all Creation. It is here for us. It is here for you. It is here for me. He is here for us. He is here for you. He is here for me. We can have peace. If we keep God in the center of our lives, we will have peace, a peace infinitely greater than any the world could provide. May the Peace of Christ be with you

Christmas

Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, today, the day after your holy birth, I want to open my heart more deeply to the mystery of your life. As I am before you today, let me be united to you through this prayer and receive from the Holy Spirit the gift of understanding you more fully. Let me be aware of your presence and wisdom as a guide in my life. Strengthen my hope to attain the holy life to which you have called me (2 Timothy 1:10).

Encountering Christ:

1. Seeking Jesus: Mary and Joseph were surprised by Jesus’ behavior and worried about him, just as any parent would be for a lost child. Jesus lived a family life like any of us, and in this moment Jesus did something quite unexpected by not following the caravan headed back to Nazareth. Mary was so exasperated that she voiced her concern aloud to Jesus: “Son, why have you done this to us?” Joseph searched within his own heart to understand. We know what it is like when unexpected events like miscommunication or misunderstandings complicate family or community life. Is our first impulse to voice our concerns to Jesus?

2. Jesus Responded: At Jesus’ response, did Mary and Joseph begin to see the unfolding truth of their Son’s mission beyond his immediate family? Jesus, their beloved son, yet also the beloved Son of the Father, was showing them where he was being led by God. He invited them to recognize that, even though his family was home, his place of growth and stability in love, he was being invited by the Father to a witness that would demand a complete “letting go,” a detachment from the two people he surely loved most deeply on earth. Our family is meant to be our stronghold, but ultimately we are all called to communion with Christ through a vocation and mission of our own. This often means letting go. "The mission of the Christian in the world is a mission for all, a mission of service, which excludes no one; it requires great generosity and in particular the gaze and heart turned heavenward to invoke the Lord’s help. There is so much need for Christians who bear witness to the Gospel with joy in everyday life. The disciples, sent by Jesus, 'returned with joy.' When we do this, our heart fills with joy" (Pope Francis, Angelus, July 3, 2016).

3. The Holy Family: Today’s Feast of the Holy Family reminds us that growth in grace and virtue originates in family life. We have a personal call to holiness, but it is lived out amid others in the close-knit experience of family. Jesus set the example for us by obedience to his earthly parents and total adherence to his heavenly Father’s will. We even have a commandment, “Honor thy father and mother.” So crucial is our loving participation in the family that St. John Paul II said, “As the family goes, so goes the nation, and so goes the whole world in which we live” (November 30, 1986).

Conversing with Christ: Dear Lord, thank you for calling me to a family, not only the family that I was born into, but also the family of God and the Church. Let me be aware that in this mystery, I join the mystery of your Incarnation. Help me to be united to you in the way I live my own life within my family and to trust that by my obedience I am growing in holiness and pleasing you. I ask the Holy Family especially to watch over and protect me, my family, and all those whom I love.

 Suy Niệm Tin Mừng Thứ Sáu Sáng 24/12.. (Lk. 1:67-79 )

Trong chúng ta, đôi khi có nhiều điều lo sợ khi nghĩ đến việc Thiên Chúa đến thăm viếng chúng ta, Vì chúng ta tin rằng việc có thể xẩy ra chỉ là sự dồng nghĩa với cơn thịnh nộ, với sự phán xét và trừng phạt. Nhưng Dacaria đã đúng: Việc viếng thăm của Thiên Chúa đã chứng minh lòng trung tín Thiên Chúa vì Ngài đã luôn giữ đúng với lời hứa của Ngài. Đó cũng là một dấu chỉ của tình yêu trung thành và lòng thương xót của Thiên Chúa, và Ngài đến để mang lại sự giải thoát, sự tự do, và đem ánh sáng của Ngài từ trời cao xuống để hướng dẫn chúng ta. Không có gì phải sợ hãi, trừ khi, chúng ta đã phản bội và chống lại những điều giáo huấn của Thiên Chúa đẵ thay thế công lý và tình thương bằng những sự lạm dụng quyền lực, tham những và bất công. Chúa Giêsu thực sự là ánh sáng ban mai từ trời cao và là sự hiện diện của lòng Thiên Chúa hay thương xót. Mỗi ngày chúng ta có thể đón nhận Chúa Giêsu vào trong lòng của chúng ta và như thánh Gioan Tẩy Giả đã chuẩn bị cho những người khác để họ nhận được những hồng ân của Thiên Chúa. Chúng ta cũng nên chuẩn bị tâm hồn của chúng ta để đón Chúa Hài đồng đến viếng thăm chúng ta trong đêm nay và Ngài sẽ trở lại để đón chúng ta về với Ngài trong một cuộc sống mới.

Lạy Chúa, cởi mở lòng chúng con, để chúng con biết đón nhận những hồng ân và món quà tinh thần của Chúa ban cho chúng con hôm nay.

December 24th  Friday 4th Week of Advent (Morning)

Many feared the visitation of God, believing that it could only mean wrath, judgment, and punishment. But Zechariah had it right: the visitation of God proved that God kept His promises. It was also a sign of God’s faithful love and tender mercy, and brought deliverance, freedom, and a guiding light from above. There was nothing to fear — unless, of course, you were opposed to all those things and dedicated instead to power and injustice. These were God's gifts — but have we opened our minds and hearts to receive them?

Perhaps we still live in fear or are strangers to a sense of joy and gratitude. Jesus is truly the dawning light from on high and the presence of God's tender mercy. Each day we can receive Jesus into our hearts and like John the Baptist prepare others to receive the gift of God. The visitation of God is truly new life.

Lord, open my heart to receive the gift of Your spirit.

December 24th 

Opening Prayer: Lord Jesus, I come before you for this time of prayer to be with you. Tonight, we celebrate your birth. And how I need you to be born into my heart, too. As I open my heart to you in prayer, fill me with greater faith in hope; root my heart in greater hope in you; and let me love you just a bit more this Christmas. Jesus, you come to me; I want to be here for you, too.

Encountering Christ:

1. Blessing God: When Zechariah proclaimed that his son would be named John, as the Angel of God declared, his tongue was freed and he spoke blessing God. And what a hymn of praise it was! His words have been taken up by the whole Church and are recited daily by clergy, religious, and many laypeople around the world in the morning hour of the Liturgy of the Hours, Lauds. As we listen to these words on the eve of Christ’s birth, we are reminded that prayers of praise instantly place us in the proper disposition before God: as lowly creatures before our creator and beloved children before our Father. As we call to mind the awesome attributes of God, our hearts are humbled so that we can bow low before the infant in his manger.

2. The Savior Is Close: Zechariah proclaimed that God was sending a Savior from the house of David, and with warm words of fatherly love he welcomed his Son, “prophet of the most high.” His prayer, so eloquent and inspired, stirs our hearts into anticipatory fervor. The Savior is near! He will come as an infant king, a helpless newborn, a light in the darkness, and a guide in the way of peace. Let us gather up our busy, scattered hearts, to prepare to live these great mysteries on this Christmas night and tomorrow’s Christmas morn.

3. Knowledge of Salvation: The Savior of Zechariah’s prophecy won us forgiveness of our sins by his suffering, death, and resurrection. Just hours from celebrating Jesus’ birth, let’s take a moment to recall the words of the prophet John the Baptist and “repent.” Let’s acknowledge our sinfulness and thank Our Lord and Savior for the awesome demonstration of love by which he has made our salvation possible. The dawn of his compassion breaks forth upon us. He shines on our darkness and leads us to his peace.

Conversing with Christ: Jesus, very soon Mary and Joseph will hold you in their arms, you who are the salvation of all the world. You are my Redeemer, and you are Redeemer of all. I praise you for your goodness and mercy, and I beg you, come soon! Come with the grace and healing our world and my own heart so need. Remind me of your love; let me know you more deeply this Christmas, and love you more.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will strive to raise my heart and mind to you amidst

Trong Tin Mừng hôm nay, Thánh Luca mô tả sự ra đời của Thánh Gioan Tẩy Giả cũng như loan báo sự ra đời của Chúa Jêsus, giống như thế việc rao giảng của thánh Gioan Tẩy Giả là việc loan báo về sứ mệnh của Chúa Kitô. Thánh Gioan Tẩy Giả được Thiên Chúa chọn là một trong những tiên tri vĩ đại nhất của Ngài. Khi còn bé nhỏ, ngài bất lực và thiếu thốn. Là tiên tri, ngài đã cho chúng ta thấy sự khiêm tốn và luôn biết đặt mình vào sự phó thác nơi Thiên Chúa.

Qua phép rửa của chúng ta, chúng ta nhận được sự viên mãn của Chúa Thánh Thần. Chúng ta được cũng được rửa sạch và nhờ quyền năng của Thánh Linh mà chúng ta trở thành con cái của Thiên Chúa . Chúng ta cũng được xức dầu với ân sủng để làm tiên tri. Chúng ta làm chứng về ân sủng này qua việc chấp nhận một thái độ khiêm tốn thật trước mặt Thiên Chúa và những người chung quanh của chúng ta. Ân sủng của phép Rửa đã trao cho chúng ta một phẩm giá vượt xa Thánh Gioan Tẩy Giả.

Giống như Thánh Gioan , chúng ta được đặt tên mới. Giống như Thánh Gioan , chúng ta được ban cho một phần trách nhiệm quan trọng trong kế hoạch của Thiên Chúa, là để làm chứng cho cuộc sống mà chúng ta đã lãnh nhận trong Phép Rửa. Điều Thiên Chúa muốn chúng ta là làm chứng nhân cho Chúa Giêsu Kitô và đem Tin Mừng của Ngài đến với mọi người. Chúng ta không thể làm được điều này nếu không có sự trợ giúp của Chúa và chúng ta không thể nhận được sự trợ giúp của Chúa nếu chúng ta không có sự khiêm tốn, đó là điều mà Chúa Giêsu gọi là sự nghèo đói của tinh thần.

My Reflection on Dec 23

In today's Gospel, Luke describes the birth of John the Baptist as announcing the birth of Jesus, just as the preaching of John the Baptist would announce the mission of Christ.

John the Baptist was chosen by God to be one of His greatest prophets. As a baby he was helpless and needy. As a prophet, he displayed the same humility and need for God.

We, too, are anointed with the grace to be prophets. We testify to this grace through embracing a truly humble attitude before God and our neighbor. The grace of baptism confers on us a dignity that far surpasses that of John the Baptist.

In our baptism we receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit. We are justified washed clean and through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit we become children of God. Like John, we are given a new name. Like John, we are given a vital part to play in God's plan, which is to witness to the life that we have received in baptism. What God wants us is to be witnesses to Jesus Christ and his Good News. We cannot do this without God's help and we cannot receive God's help without humility, which is what Jesus called the poverty of spirit.

Our mouths were created to give glory and praise to God, and yet we use our mouths for many purposes other than to praise God. Sometimes we defame, curse, gossip, eat excessively and spread lies with our mouths.

The Gospel makes us ponder and underlines the importance of speech. When and where should we use it? Let us be fierce witnesses of God and speak about His goodness to all mankind. Let us use our tongues wisely and do justice to our power of speech.

Opening Prayer: Lord Jesus, I come before you for this time of prayer to be with you. Tonight, we celebrate your birth. And how I need you to be born into my heart, too. As I open my heart to you in prayer, fill me with greater faith in hope; root my heart in greater hope in you; and let me love you just a bit more this Christmas. Jesus, you come to me; I want to be here for you, too.

Encountering Christ:

1. Blessing God: When Zechariah proclaimed that his son would be named John, as the Angel of God declared, his tongue was freed and he spoke blessing God. And what a hymn of praise it was! His words have been taken up by the whole Church and are recited daily by clergy, religious, and many laypeople around the world in the morning hour of the Liturgy of the Hours, Lauds. As we listen to these words on the eve of Christ’s birth, we are reminded that prayers of praise instantly place us in the proper disposition before God: as lowly creatures before our creator and beloved children before our Father. As we call to mind the awesome attributes of God, our hearts are humbled so that we can bow low before the infant in his manger.

2. The Savior Is Close: Zechariah proclaimed that God was sending a Savior from the house of David, and with warm words of fatherly love he welcomed his Son, “prophet of the most high.” His prayer, so eloquent and inspired, stirs our hearts into anticipatory fervor. The Savior is near! He will come as an infant king, a helpless newborn, a light in the darkness, and a guide in the way of peace. Let us gather up our busy, scattered hearts, to prepare to live these great mysteries on this Christmas night and tomorrow’s Christmas morn.

3. Knowledge of Salvation: The Savior of Zechariah’s prophecy won us forgiveness of our sins by his suffering, death, and resurrection. Just hours from celebrating Jesus’ birth, let’s take a moment to recall the words of the prophet John the Baptist and “repent.” Let’s acknowledge our sinfulness and thank Our Lord and Savior for the awesome demonstration of love by which he has made our salvation possible. The dawn of his compassion breaks forth upon us. He shines on our darkness and leads us to his peace.

Conversing with Christ: Jesus, very soon Mary and Joseph will hold you in their arms, you who are the salvation of all the world. You are my Redeemer, and you are Redeemer of all. I praise you for your goodness and mercy, and I beg you, come soon! Come with the grace and healing our world and my own heart so need. Remind me of your love; let me know you more deeply this Christmas, and love you more.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will strive to raise my heart and mind to you amidst the busyness and preparations and pray, “Come, Lord Jesus!”

Qua đoạn trong Phúc Âm hôm nay, Thánh Matthêu cho chúng ta thấy nguồn gốc của xác thịt con người của Chúa Giêsu, để chứng minh rằng chúa Giêsu cũng là con người phàm xác thịt như chúng ta, cũng có cha, có mẹ, có ông bà tổ tiên. Phúc âm cũng cho chúng ta biết tầm quan trọng của nguồn gốc của con người, của gia đình. Cũng như Chúa Giêsu, cũng có một gia đình, có cha là Giuse và mẹ là Maria, môt gia đình luôn yêu thương và biết hy sinh cho nhau. Chúa Giêsu yêu thương quý trọng cha mẹ mình và là một tấm gương tốt sáng cho tất cả chúng ta biết rằng chúng ta cũng phải tôn trọng và vâng lời cha mẹ.

Qua phép rửa, tất cả chúng ta đã thuộc về gia đình của Thiên Chúa, Chúng ta đều là con cái Thiên Chúa, Thiên Chúa là Cha chúng ta ở trên trời, và có nhiều chỗ ở cho dành riêng cho chúng ta ở trên đó và Chúa Giêsu đã đi trước để chuẩn bị một nơi cho mỗi người chúng ta.

Meditation:

Facing death, Jacob called his sons together and blessed them.

For our reflections on the mystery of Christ, the blessing given to Judah, selected for today’s first reading, is the most significant as it includes Judah’s descendants, David and Jesus: “The sceptre shall not pass from Judah until he comes to whom it belongs.” That first of all refers to King David, but only as a symbol of the Messiah. The angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary reveals the true meaning of this blessing: “the Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David; he will rule over the house of Jacob and his reign will have no end.” (Lk 1:32-33). Matthew’s Gospel was designed in many ways to demonstrate that Jesus was truly the Messiah, since all the prophecies of the Old Testament were fulfilled in him. Thus Matthew begins with a genealogy, demonstrating that Jesus was a descendant of Abraham, through Jacob, Judah and David.

The Alleluia verse proclaims that God’s divine wisdom guides creation with power and love. The first reading and the Gospel, each in its own way, demonstrate that God guides human history to its fulfilment in Jesus with the same wisdom, power and love.

Opening Prayer: Lord Jesus, draw me into this moment of prayer, this place of encounter with you, together with your Mother and my mother, Mary. I believe you have something to say to me today; I trust that even if I feel you are silent, you are with me. Help me to receive your word in this moment of prayer and to welcome you, soon, into my heart on the day of your birth. Mother Mary, draw me into the wonder and praise that flow from your heart in your Magnificat.

Encountering Christ:

1. Praise Goes up First (cf. Judges 20:18): Praise spontaneously flowed from Mary’s heart as she encountered her cousin and was called “Mother of the Lord” for the first time. Her words were true at the moment she prayed them, and they are still true, on this day as Mother Church is united around the world praising God for the gift of his Son. Today we make her words our own. Our souls proclaim the greatness of the Lord.

2. He Lifts up the Lowly: Our Lady knew well how God lifted up the lowly throughout the history of her people, and now she was experiencing it personally in a way beyond her imagining. She wholeheartedly acknowledged her lowliness and must have marveled that God asked her to participate so intimately in his plan of salvation for the whole world. Perhaps resting her hands on her slowly growing baby bump, she would also contemplate how he had come to make himself lowly—an infant, totally helpless and in need of love, so as to bring us the Father’s love and let us love him, too.

3. He Remembers His Promise: Mary reminds us that God did not forget his people as they continued throughout the Old Testament to seek his face. And he doesn’t forget us as we beseech him for graces and blessings! In the words of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, “Often, his plan is hidden under the opaque terrain of human vicissitudes, in which the ‘proud,’ the ‘mighty’ and the ‘rich’ triumph. However, in the end, his secret strength is destined to manifest who God's real favorites are: the ‘faithful’ to his Word, ‘the humble,’ ‘the hungry,’ ‘his servant Israel,’ namely, the community of the People of God that, as Mary, is constituted by those who are ‘poor,’ pure, and simple of heart” (February 16, 2006).

Conversing with Christ: Jesus, you have come into this world as an infant to make yourself lowly so that I can approach your mangerside without fear of judgment or rejection. I wish to praise you for your goodness and mercy! Grant me your grace, these last days of Advent. Grant me the grace to be unafraid to present my lowliness before you. I will not hide my lowliness, for I know that you love faithful and humble souls. And oh Jesus, you have come for love of me. I want to stay at the mangerside for love of you, too.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will strive to pray the Magnificat in my examen prayer at the end of, or at some moment during, the day.

Đức Maria thể hiện trong hành động rất thực tế. Thiên Chúa đã đến thăm Đức Maria. Reflection on: Luke 1:39-45

What is the significance of Mary's visit to her cousin Elizabeth before the birth of Jesus? God's grace, like good news, is something that must be shared. Mary demonstrates in practical action. The Lord has visited her. So now she brings the Lord to her cousin Elizabeth and the child John in her womb. God's gifts are not for personal price and profit but for self- giving, sharing and service. Saying "Yes" to one grace opens the door to a whole storehouse of graced responses, first the elderly mother's blessing and then the unborn child's dance for joy. God's visit is acknowledged and then celebrated. The God who has visited his people in times past continues to come into our lives. Let us bring him to those who need his blessing.

Reflection on Dec 21: Luke 1:39-45

Opening Prayer: Heavenly Father, you invite me to enter into this encounter with you in prayer. Thank you for calling me to be with you and to know you. I need you. You know, better than I do, just how much—and so you come to me. Thank you, Father, for sending your only Son. As the day of his birth draws closer, help me to open my heart to you in this moment of prayer and enter into this passage once more.

Encountering Christ:

1. Wonder of Mary: Mary, a newly pregnant young woman, got up in haste and traveled over hills and valleys to help her cousin prepare for birth. In her heart, did Mary wonder what Elizabeth would say? Would Elizabeth understand her condition as a blessing? Would Elizabeth recognize the Lord within her womb? Mary no doubt brought these concerns to Jesus as he allowed himself to be carried to Elizabeth's home. Let us pause in wonder at this mystery and join Mary in her intimate dialogue with Jesus.

2. Wonder from Elizabeth’s Heart: When Mary arrived at Elizabeth’s home, words of wonder poured forth from Elizabeth’s heart: “Who am I, that the Mother of my Lord should come to me?” Elizabeth–who was once barren, whose husband was struck dumb, who carried a mysterious child so late in life–must have had to let go of her plans, to trust and hope in the Lord over and over again. Great, indeed, must have been the wonder that welled up from her heart as she greeted Mary. “Who am I?”—to be so blessed by a greeting from the Mother of my Savior, a young woman who happens to be my cousin. “Who am I?”: to be tended to for weeks by the Mother of God? “Who am I?”—that I would live to see the fullness of time, the fulfillment of God’s promises? When we find ourselves wondering at God’s action in our lives, may we draw strength and consolation from Elizabeth, who saw God’s promises fulfilled beyond her wildest dreams.

3. Wonder from the Waiting World: Elizabeth recognized Jesus in his Incarnation and was then able to rejoice in his presence in Mary’s womb. Not only had God fulfilled the deepest desire of Elizabeth’s heart, but he was fulfilling his promise to his chosen people too. As we draw one day closer to the birth of the Lord, may Elizabeth’s wonder become ours. Like her, may we learn to encounter God in the most unexpected places and worship him there!

Conversing with Christ: Jesus, you are coming soon. Help me to prepare my heart for your coming. I wish to wonder at your faithfulness, marvel at your goodness, and entrust everything to you, as Mary and Elizabeth did.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will make an act of trust and hope in you, giving over to you one of my worries or problems.

Là người phụ nữ Israel trung thành với Thiên Chúa Giavê, Maria đã biết cầu nguyện xin cho sự xuất hiện của Đấng Thiên sai ngay từ lúc còn bé. Khi Maria còn là một cô gái trẻ, Maria đã khám phá ra rằng mình chính là một phần trong câu trả lời của Thiên Chúa nhưng theo một cách trổi vượt xa hơn những lời cầu xin mà Maria đã xin: không phải là Đấng Thiên sai chỉ là con của Maria, mà con trai của Maria cũng chính là Thiên Chúa. Sự đồng ý tán thành của Maria với Tổng lãnh Thiên Thần Gabriel, đã khởi sự việc chuẩn bị sẵn sàng cho sự ra đời của Đức Giêsu, Đấng Thiên sai.

Để mang lại niềm vui cho người khác trong mùa Giáng sinh này, chúng ta nên bắt chước Đức Maria là hãy mang Chúa Kitô đến với mọi người. Ngài là món quà tuyệt vời nhất mà chúng ta có thể mang đến cho bất cứ ai mà chúng ta yêu mến. Tất cả các món quà vật chất trên cõi đời này đều không có gì sánh bằng. REFLECTION December 21, 2019 -

Mary is truly the model of how we should be living Advent in preparing for Christ’s arrival. God the Father prepared her from the first moment of her conception to be the worthy mother of his Son. Like a faithful daughter of Israel, she had prayed throughout her youth for the coming of the Messiah. When she was a young lady, she discovered that she was part of God’s answer to that prayer, but in a way that would have far exceeded any Hebrew maiden’s prayers: not only would the Messiah be her son, but her son would also be God. Her “fiat,” her wholehearted “yes!” to the Archangel Gabriel, launched the proximate preparation for the birth of Jesus the Messiah. Let us enter into Mary’s response of faith, which is a guide for us along our pilgrimage of faith. Let us listen to the beat of Mary’s contemplative heart, so that our Christmas may be as fruitful as that first Christmas.

By going to Elizabeth’s aid, Mary carrying the tiny Jesus in her womb — became the first missionary, the first bearer of the Good News that would change all of human history. Mary was able to bring incredible joy to both Elizabeth and John the Baptist in her womb precisely because she was bringing Christ. And Mary was able to burst out with her beautiful Magnificat for the very same reason. To bring joy to others this Christmas, we have to bring them Christ. He is the greatest gift we could ever bring to someone we love — all the material goods in the world fall flat in comparison. Without sharing Jesus, we are not giving our loved ones anything that is truly lasting. Bring Christ, and you bring everything.

REFLECTION

The gospel reading from Luke provides us with a wonderful example of belief and trust. This is expressed in the lives of two ordinary women. In yesterday's gospel, we were able to recognize Mary's belief when she said "yes" to Gabriel's announcement that she was to become the mother of Jesus. This event prompted Mary to travel to Elizabeth.

There Mary sees the sign of God's power at work in the womb of Elizabeth. These events confirm Mary's belief in the greatness of God.

The Holy Spirit to whom Mary and Elizabeth responded is the same Spirit that each one of us received in Baptism and Confirmation. We too are filled with the Holy Spirit. We only need to listen to the call of the Spirit and say "yes" to God as often as we can as we seek to reach the level of belief and trust like Mary and Elizabeth. When we apply God's promises to our own lives, we, like Mary and Elizabeth, will know the excitement and serenity that come from having complete faith in our God.

Opening Prayer: Heavenly Father, the birth of your Son is drawing nearer. As you make yourself present to me today in your word, open my heart to be nourished by your grace, strengthened in trust by your love, and able to respond freely and lovingly to your invitation to my heart. Mother Mary, be very close to me and pray for me and with me.

Encountering Christ:

1. A New Grace: The liturgy presents this very familiar passage to us so that we may consider it anew. Were we to read this story every day, we would not exhaust the riches Our Lord has placed there for us. “For such is the depth of the Christian Scriptures that, even if I were attempting to study them and nothing else, from boyhood to decrepit old age, with the utmost leisure, the most unwearied zeal, and with talents greater than I possess, I would still be making progress in discovering their treasures” (St. Augustine). May we consider once again with the eyes of faith this moment when the history of the universe depended on a young girl’s answer to God and was forever changed by her generosity and God’s great grace.

2. Pondering: Advent and Christmas are seasons for pondering; they are seasons for simple, quiet awe. As the world outside may be covered in quiet blankets of snow or chilled, glittering frost—let us not be afraid or too impatient to sit in silence and ponder. Let us learn, here, from Mary, that it doesn’t matter if we grasp it all or not; it is more a mystery to be contemplated than to comprehend. Perhaps the Lord wants us simply to receive and be docile in these moments of prayer, as she was, trusting each step along the way that he will give what we need.

3. The Holy Spirit Will Come Upon You: God was faithful to his promise to Mary. Not only had God fulfilled the deepest desire of her heart, but he was fulfilling his promise to his chosen people. In her, he is faithful to all the promises he made to the chosen people recounted in the Old Testament and to each of us. As Christmas draws closer and our journey to the mangerside is reaching its final days, let us unite our hearts to Mary and find strength in her fiat to offer our own as a gift to the Christ child. He promises to send the Holy Spirit. How do we wish to receive him?

Conversing with Christ: Jesus, your coming on Christmas is drawing so near. Help me to continue preparing my heart to receive you, to take you in my arms and heart, as Mary did, to be in awe of the goodness of our God who would bow so low for love of us, and to respond generously to whatever you may be asking of me.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will try to give you “space” in my mind and heart, in my interior, to reveal or inspire where and how you are asking for my “fiat,” as you did Mary’s.

"Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with you." When the angel first uttered these words, Mary was disturbed. And yet we see that after Mary's fiat that day, we can greet each other today saying, "Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with you." We are in fact, a grace-filled people. The Lord has chosen to be with us always until the end of time. Pause for a while and listen while we say these words to ourselves, "Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with you". I know that our hearts will surely be stirred by these words. God, in His love and mercy, continues to live within us despite our shortcomings. How can we ever be worthy to stand in front of Him knowing what we know about ourselves? And yet, here we are, filled with His grace. What more is there to want?

Today most specially, we are invited to remember how our Lord loves us, how He longs to be with us, how we cannot be complete without Him. Our hearts pour out in gratitude that our Lord has chosen to be one like us. We thank Mary for her decision to say yes to the invitation of the Lord.

Lord, keep us close to you, do not let us stray too far from you. Keep our hearts grateful for the many graces of your love and mercy. Grant us the grace, so that like Mary, we can keep constantly at prayer, recognize your voice and be ready to say yes to your invitation.

Qua bài Tin Mừng hôm nay, chúng ta có thể thử tưởng tượng Đức Maria đã có cảm giác như thế nào khi Thiên sứ đến truyền tin? Vào lúc mà Đức Maria được Thiên sứ truyền tin thì Đức Maria còn rất trẻ, lúc đó Maria mới khoảng chừng 13 - 15 tuổi, và còn trong trắng. Và khi sứ thần của Thiên Chúa đến nói với Maria rằng cô sẽ mang thai Con Thiên Chúa. Nhưng thay vì đặt câu hỏi về Thiên Chúa hay từ chối những gì mà thiên sứ dã truyền, Đức Maria đã chấp nhận ngay mà không có sự đòi hỏi nào khác. Bởi vì Đức Maria luôn đạt niền Tin của Cô nơi Thiên Chúa, Cô chấp nhận tất cả đớn đau tủi nhục của xã hội để nhận làm Mẹ Thiên Chúa một cách mù quáng vâng (theo nghĩa Thế gian). Nếu chúng ta là Đức Maria hôm nay, chúng ta sẽ phải đáp lại lời của Thiên sứ như thế nào? Chúng ta có dám khiêm tốn nói rằng chúng ta cũng sẽ làm theo như ý Chúa như vậy chăng?

Để học nơi gương Đức Maria và bắt chước như Đức Maria, Chúng ta phải biết đầu hàng tất cả mọi thứ đang cản trở niềm tin tưởng của chúng ta vào Thiên Chúa, chúng ta phải biết quên chính mình và khiêm tốn. Đức Maria đã có một đức tin vẹn toàn, và đã cô đặt vững niềm tin đó hoàn toàn trong những việc mà Thiên Chúa đã làm trong cuộc sống của cô. Cô đã có một thái độ rất khiêm tốn, như một người đầy tớ, nữ tỳ của Thiên Chúa.

Thánh Maria, Đức Mẹ Chúa Trời, chúng con cảm tạ và khen ngợi Mẹ vì tình yêu quảng đại và can đảm của Mẹ trong việc Mẹ đã khiêm tốn xin Chúa hãy thực hiện nơi Mẹ theo ý Chúa. Nguyện xin Mẹ Maria cầu bầu cho chúng con để chúng con biết mong muốn được sống như Mẹ, và khi Thiên Chúa giao cho chúng con một nhiệm vụ nào đó, dù có khó khăn hoặc có thể không thể thực hiện được, Xin giúp chúng con biết đặt niềm tin vào Thiên Chúa và biết lắng nghe tiếng mời gọi thật sự cùa Ngài, để Ơn Chúa Thánh Thần hướng dẫn và giúp chúng con.

Suy Niệm Tin Mừng Chúa Nhật Thứ Tư Mùa Vọng Năm C

Hôm nay, Giáo Hội đã giới thiệu cho chúng ta hai bà mẹ tương lai, với sự háo hức đầy hứng thú và vui mừng vì sắp được làm mẹ. Hành động đầu tiên của Đức Maria trong vai trò Mẹ của Đấng Cứu Thế đã làm là mang lại tình yêu và lòng nhân hậu của Thiên Chúa đến với người chị họ của mình, là bà Isave.

Việc Đức Maria đến thăm bà Isava là để chia sẻ tin mừng mà cô đã nhận được từ sứ Thần Gabriel với người chị họ lớn tuổi của mình, để chứng kiến sự tốt lành của Thiên Chúa đã đem lại cho cuộc đời của bà Isave, người mà mọi người gọi là son sẻ.

Còn bà Isave đã được ơn Chúa Thánh Thần, và đã lớn tiếng kêu lên “Bởi đâu mà tôi được Mẹ Thiên Chúa của tôi đến với tôi như thế này?" (Lk 1:43).

Chính là đức tin và lòng khiêm tốn của bà, mà Chúa Thánh Thần đã làm cho bà thấy được rằng người em họ của bà chính là Mẹ Thiên Chúa.

Bà đã vui mừng với Đức Maria, người đã được ơn phúc trước mặt Chúa. Mà không hề có sự đố kỵ hay ghen tương.Còn về phần Đức Maria, cô gái trẻ đầy tương lai đã bừng nên với niềm vui. Đức Marìa đã phải chịu thiệt thòi khi phải mang thai, hơn nữa sự việc không phải là sự lựa chọn mà cô muốn, nhưng với niềm tin vào Chúa, Đức Maria đã chọn để vâng phục và chấp nhận Ngôi Lời của Thiên Chúa ở trong cô.  Lời mời gọi sự hợp tác của Thiên Chúa qua tổng lãnh thiên thần Gabriel, và tiếng xin vâng của Đức Maria đã được biến thành mầu nhiệm Ngôi Lời Nhập Thể. Và Thiên Chúa đã trở nên một con người phàm tục, nhỏ bé trong cung lòng của Đức Maria.

Đức Maria có thể từ chối và nói "Không" với Thiên Chúa, Cô có thể đưa ra hàng triệu lý do tại sao cô không muốn hy sinh để cưu mang Thiên Chúa làm Người. Cũng giống như chúng ta, chúng ta thường đưa ra cả hằng triệu lý do tại sao chúng ta lại phải hy sinh trong việc này, hay sự hy sinh này quá to lớn, hoặc là tại sao chúng ta phải chịu quá nhiều mất mát!

 Nhưng đối với Đức Maria, với một lòng tin tưởng vào Thiên Chúa và lòng khiêm tốn cô đã thưa “Xin Vâng”. Và chính nhờ vào sự tuân phục đó, tiếng xin Vâng của Đức Maria đã đem lại cho nhân loại, con người chúng ta được ơn cứu rỗi.

Giống như Đức Maria, chúng ta cũng có thể mạnh dạn thưa Xin Vâng với những kế hoạch của Thiên Chúa đã sắp đặt sẵn cho chúng ta. Vì những kế hoạch và công trình của Thiên Chúa mà những việc kỳ diệu của Ngài đã được thực hiện nơi những người đã đặt niềm tin vào Ngài.

Thiên Chúa đã đến và ở giữa chúng ta. Ngài đã đến để đem sự bình an thật sự và để cứu rỗi cho chúng ta. Chúng ta nên phải vui mừng, nhưng chúng ta không thể chỉ hưỏng niềm vui đó một mình, mà chúng ta phải biết chia sẻ niềm vui đó với những người xung quanh của chúng ta, sự chia sẽ đó không phải là sự khoe khoang về những gì mà Thiên Chúa đã làm và đã ban cho chúng ta, nhưng là sự phục vụ với lòng quảng đại và khiêm tốn, Và cũng không phải là sự ghen tường hay so bì với những người khác.

Reflection:

Today we commemorate the Second Joyful Mystery, when Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth. Why did Mary visit Elizabeth? Mary wanted to see with her own eyes the wonderful news of Elizabeth having a child in her old age. Mary wanted to join Elizabeth in her gratitude to God's goodness to her. And Mary wanted to be of help to her cousin in her pregnancy.

Mary herself had been especially chosen and blessed by God: she carried within her the Son of the Most High. She had humbly and graciously accepted God's invitation for her to bear the Son of God, by the power of the Holy Spirit. She was the first and foremost disciple of the Lord Jesus, with a privileged role as Mother of God: from her conception she had been kept free of all sin.

When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child within her "leapt for joy." "You are most blessed among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb! How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to me? The moment your greeting sounded in my ears, he baby within me suddenly leapt for joy. Blessed are you who believed that the Lord's word would come true."

The Visitation shows us the mysterious ways of God with people: two extraordinary women bearing children announced by angels, one though barren and in her old age, the other a virgin and by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit. Both had special roles in God's plan of salvation for all: one carrying the Son of God, the other carrying his Precursor.

Mary came to assist her cousin Elizabeth. In her Magnificat Mary humbly and joyfully acknowledges God's great works in her.

As followers of Jesus, we are also asked to have roles in God's salvific plan and work. Are our minds and hearts open to hear God's invitation, as Mary did? We look at Mary our Mother in her unconditional loving and trusting response to God's invitation, "I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me as you have said." We pray we can do the same.

Mary took time to visit Elizabeth, to share her joy and to be of assistance to her: may we also share ourselves with others in need.

Bottom line: Mary went "in haste." We ask her intercession to overcome sloth regarding the things of God.

Pope Benedict has given us a nice Christmas gift: his book "Jesus of Nazareth, the Infancy Narratives." You may know that he has written two other books on Jesus. The first book covers the events from the baptism in the Jordan until the Transfiguration. The second deals with what happened during Holy Week.

In these books the pope offers the fruit of his scholarship, pastoral care and prayer. Regarding the Infancy Narratives (the stories about Jesus' birth) he addresses these questions: "Is what I read true? Does it concern me? If so, how?" The pope's frankness and clarity may surprise you but I am sure it will increase your appreciation of who Jesus is and what he has done for us.

Sometimes the pope can take a single phrase and make a striking reflection. Let me give you an example from today's Gospel. We hear that when Mary, already pregnant with Jesus, went to visit her kinswoman, Elizabeth, she did so "in haste." Pope Benedict notes that the shepherds also made haste, when they heard about Jesus birth. He asks:

"How many Christians make haste today, where the things of God are concerned? Surely if anything merits haste - so the evangelist is discreetly telling us - then it is the things of God."

Pope Benedict is indicating one of the main problems of our modern world. We are busy - sometimes even frenetically busy - but when it comes to the "things of God" we tend to be lazy.* Right before Christmas, we are busy about many things, but do we stop and ask, "What is Christmas, anyway?"

I have nothing against Christmas shopping and preparing family celebrations. Those things are good and they require a lot of work and sacrifice. They are part of what I asked you to do last Sunday: Build a family.

This year, however, I am doing a different kind of family building. I am with six college-age youth on a Christmas Mission Trip to Peru. It involves first a pilgrimage to the shrines of St. Rose and St. Martin de Porres. For Christmas itself we are going to the Peru Highlands. We will spend Christmas eve with children of the Mary Bloom Center. We will be having a "chocolatada" - Christmas party that involves sharing a cup of hot chocolate with bread.

Maybe you are thinking: I wish I could be with Father Bloom and those college students. Well, in a certain sense you are with us by your prayers and support. And I ask you to join us in taking a step back - to recognize the blessings we have receive, especially the greatest blessing, Jesus himself.

On Christmas we will focus on what Jesus brings us. Pope Benedict will help us. He asks this question: What did Jesus actually bring, if not world peace, universal prosperity and a better world? What has he brought? I will save that question for the Christmas homily. Meanwhile I ask you follow the example of the Mary. She went "in haste." And let's ask her intercession that, regarding the things of God, we might overcome sloth and laziness - that we might make haste to encounter the only one who can save us: the newborn King, Jesus the Lord.
