Suy Niệm Chúa Nhật 17 Thường Niêm Năm B

Nếu Chúa Giêsu đến với chúng ta hôm nay và hỏi chúng ta cùng một câu hỏi mà Ngài đã hỏi ông Philípphê. Chắc chắc chúng ta sẽ phản ứng không khác gì ông Philiphê. “Bao nhiêu tiển mới có thể mua đủ bánh cho ngần này người ăn?. Thế nhưng khi ông Anrê và cậu bé trong nhóm dâng lên Chúa 5 ổ bánh mì và 2 con cá của họ, Vậy mà đám đông cả mấy ngày người đã được ăn uống no nê.Năm cái bách và hai con cá đã quá đủ để nuôi mấy ngàn người người theo Chúa Giêsu vào ngày hôm đó.

Điều này cũng xảy ra với mọi kitô hữu chúng ta. Sứ mệnh mà chúng ta đã nhận, là sứ mệnh trở nên thánh, sứ mệnhcủa chúng ta là dùng những ân sủng và tài năng của mình để giúp người khác có được cuộc sống viên mãn, sứ mệnh của chúng ta là trở thành ánh sáng trong thế giới tăm tối này, ánh sáng hướng dẫn những linh hồn đang tìm kiếm hướng đi để hướng tới hy vọng của thiên đàng, sứ mệnh này nằm ngoài khả năng tự nhiên của chúng ta.

Sứ mệnh này quá nặng nề đối với chúng ta, có thể đó là một lý do khiến chúng ta có xu hướng không nghĩ về sứ mệnh này quá nhiều. Tài năng và trí tuệ thiên bẩm của chúng ta ai đủ để đánh bại thế lực của cái ác dường như đang nắm giữ thế giới? Sức mạnh bẩm sinh của chúng ta có đủ sức mạnh để chấm dứt sự ích kỷ, dục vọng và lòng tham đang hoành hành trong lòng con người? Chúng ta chỉ có năm ổ bánh mì và hai con cá; chúng ta không thể làm gì cả. Chỉ có khi nào chúng ta đặt tất cả những gì chúng ta đang có trong tay của chúng ta vào trong tay Chúa Kitô, cầu xin với Chúa chứ không phải cầu xin chính mình. Chỉ có khi cầu nguyện thì chính mình, chúng ta mới có thể hy vọng hoàn thành sứ mệnh cuộc đời mình và tạo ra sự khác biệt thực sự vì lợi ích của Nước Trời. Những gì mà chúng ta không bao giờ có thể tự mình đạt được, nhưng chúng ta có thể vượt qua những thử thách đó dễ dàng nếu chúng ta phó thác cho Chúa. Như chính Chúa Giêsu đã nói: “Đối với Thiên Chúa, không có gì khó mà Ngài không thể làm được” (Mt 19,26).

Có một câu chuyện về Một linh mục truyền giáo từng làm việc ở Trung Quốc nhiều năm trước đã kể lại, đây là câu chuyện có thật về một người biết rằng Thiên Chúa coi trọng những nỗ lực nhỏ bé của chúng ta để xây dựng Vương quốc của Ngài. Yo-San là một ông lão người Trung Quốc, theo đạo Thiên chúa, làm ruộng và sống một mình trong cảnh nghèo khó trên một chiếc thuyền trên sông.

Một ngày nọ, ông ta đến gặp và nói với vị linh mục truyền giáo: “Thưa cha, nếu chúng ta có một nhà thờ thật thì chắc hẳn tốt đẹp hơn cái túp lều bằng gỗ phải không cha?” Vị linh mục trả lời: “Thật vậy,” “nhưng nó Chúng ta sẽ mất nhiều thời giờ để huy động quên góp tiền mới có thể xây được nhà thờ mới. "Ông Yo-San nói: "Thưa cha, con muốn dâng số tiền cho việc xây một nhà thờ mới." Vị linh mục trả lời: "Tôi chắc chắn rằng ông cũng sẽ có thể đóng góp một phần của ông khi thời cơ đến." Nhưng ông Yo-San khẳng định, "Không; ý tôi là, tôi muốn tự mình dâng cúng hết toàn bộ chi phí." Vị linh mục giải thích rằng điều này là không thể, vì chi phí để xây nhà thờ mới tương đương 5.000 đô la. Vì vậy, trong bốn mươi năm sống không gia đình, không nhà cửa, ông ta ăn uống sơ sài cho qua bữa. ông đã cố gắng dành phần lớn số tiền lương ít ỏi của mình cho đến khi ông có đu khoảng tiền tương đương 5.000 đô la. Vị linh mục thậm chí còn kinh ngạc hơn, và phản đối kế hoạch này, vì thấy rằng ông Yo-San đã già và sẽ sớm cần tiền để tự trang trải cuộc sống khi không còn khả năng làm việc. Sau thánh lễ, ông Yo-San ở lại quỳ trong nhà thờ nhỏ xinh xắn đó rất lâu. Chiều hôm đó người ta thấy ông đã chết, và vẫn quỳ ở đấy, vì lòng ông quá sung sướng và biết ơn Chúa. Trong một giấc mơ đêm đó, vị linh mục truyền giáo thấy Chúa Kitô đón ông già Yo San vào thiên đàng, ông nói: “Hỡi tôi tớ tốt lành và trung tín, hãy vào Thiên Đường hưởng niềm vui cùng với Chúa ngươi. Ông Yo-San là một người hiểu được cái giá trị thực sự của việc dâng hiến những nỗ lực kém cỏi của mình cho Chúa.

Trong bài Tin Mừng ngày nay, Chúa Giêsu mong muốn các môn đệ của Ngài hãy chia sẽ những gì họ có, cho dù chỉ là một ít, 5 cái bánh và hai con cá, và Ngài sè làm việc vỹ đại với những món quàô nhỏ bé đó. Có lẽ Ngài cũng muốn chúng ta làm như vậy? những ổ bánh và những con cá nào mà Thiên Chúa mong muốn chúng ta dâng lên Ngài hôm nay, và ngay bây giờ để Ngài sẽ làm những điềm lạ ngay trước mắt chúng ta? Có lẽ chúng ta lo sợ vì dâng lên Chúa những gì chúng ta có quá ít?

Có thể Thiên Chúa đã hằng thì thầm với chúng ta một thời gian, Ngài mong mỏi chúng ta dành thêm ít thời giờ với Ngài mỗi ngày để cầu nguyện, đọc một cuốn sách thiêng liêng hay, suy ngẫm về Kinh thánh, hay phục vụ giáo xứ với tư cách là Giáo lý viên, hay làm những việc khác, và trong việc xây dựng giáo xứ của chúng ta. Nhưng, chúng ta quá bận rộn, Cũng được không sao Chúa biết, Dâng cho chúa tất cả những gì chúng ta có cho dù là chút ít thời giờ! Thiên Chúa sẽ làm nên điều kỳ diệu với bất cứ thời gian ngắn ngủi nào mà chúng ta có thể dành cho ngài.

Có thể Thiên Chúa đã đặt trong lòng chúng ta một ước muốn là làm điều gì đó cho ngài hoặc cho những người chung quanh của chúng ta, bắt đầu một điều gì đó mới, để tiếp cận những người đang cần sự giúp đỡ, nhưng, chúng ta đã không dám thử, bởi vì chúng ta sợ thất bại. Thiên Chúa sẽ nhân rộng bất cứ tài năng nhỏ bé nào của chúng ta, nếu chúng ta chân thành và ngoan ngoãn đặt nó vào tay của Ngài.

Có thể có ai đó trong đời mà chúng ta cần nói lời tha thứ, hay xin lỗi, hoặc muốn mời họ trở lại vơi Chúa đi nhà thờ, hoặc khuyến khích ai đó nên bỏ đi một số thói quen tội lỗi, Nhưng, chúng ta phải biết nói như làm thế nào đây? chúng ta biết phải làm sao để không làm cho người đối diện không bị tự ái? Thiên Chúa sẽ biến những lời nói nghèo nàn, vô nghĩa của chúng ta thành những hạt giống của ân sủng, nếu chúng ta đặt niềm tin vào tay Ngài và lắng nghe tiếng Chúa Thánh Thần hướng dẫn chúng ta phải nói gì..

Khi Chúa Giêsu thực hiện phép lạ Thánh Thể trong Thánh Lễ này, chúng ta hãy củng cố lòng tin tưởng vào Chúa, và trao cho Chúa bất cứ ổ bánh và cá nào mà Chúa đang muốn xin chúng ta. Chắc chắn chúng ta sẽ không hối tiếc.

Lạy Chúa Jêsus, Chúa đáp ứng lòng khao khát sâu xa nhất của trái tim chúng con và Chúa nuôi dưỡng chúng con bằng loại bánh lúa mì tốt nhất (ThV. 81:16). Hãy Chúa hãy lấp đầy lòng biết ơn của chúng con và cho chúng con một trái tim biết rộng lượng để chúng con có thể sẵn sàng chia sẻ với người khác những gì Chúa đã trao ban cho chúng con.

God Can Work Wonders from Our Poor Efforts

If Jesus comes to me and asks me the same question He asked Philip. I may just nervously be like Philip and point out to the Lord that if everyone would receive one piece of medium Pizza. We will need about 1,875 pizzas (or 15,000 pieces of pizza (I assume that there were 5000 men, 5000 women, 5000 kids) … and if the cost of each pizza is $7.00 each, we will need total $13,945.00 including tax, but no tips. It is impossible for us to have that much money to pay for those pizzas! And also. I don’t think any pizza store or anyone can supply to us that many pizzas in a short period of time.

Even we double the dollar amount, we still could not buy enough food to satisfy those hungry people.

And yet, when Andrew and the boy in the group handed over their 5 loaves of bread and the 2 fish to the Lord, they became more than enough to feed those who followed Jesus on that day.

The same goes for every Christian, including ourselves.

The mission we have received, the mission of becoming saints, the mission of using our gifts and talents to help others lead fulfilled and fulfilling lives, the mission of being bright the light in this dark world, the light that guides searching souls toward the hope of heaven, this mission is beyond our natural capacities.

It's too much for us, which may be one reason we tend not to think about it too much. Whose natural talents and wisdom are sufficient to defeat the forces of evil that seem to hold the world?

Whose innate strength is sufficient to put an end to the selfishness, lust, and greed that rage within the human heart? We only have five loaves of bread and two fish; by ourselves we can do nothing. Only if we put all we have and all we are into Christ's hands, confiding in him and not ourselves, can we hope to fulfill our life mission and make a real difference for the good of the Kingdom; in our hearts and in society at large. What we could never achieve on our own, we can immeasurably surpass with God. As Jesus himself put it, "For God, everything is possible" (Mt 19:26).

There is a story about A missionary priest who worked in China years ago told us a true story about someone who knew that God values even our poor little efforts to build his Kingdom.

Yo-San was an old Chinese man, a Christian, who worked in the rice fields and lived alone in poverty in a boat on the river. He came to the missionary one day and said to the missionary priest: "Father, wouldn't it be good if we could have a real church instead of the wooden hut? “The priest answered: "Indeed it would,” “but it will take us a long time to raise the money."

Yo-San said: "Father, I would like to pay for the building of a new church." The priest replies: "Well, I am sure you will be able to contribute your share when the time comes." But Yo-San insisted, "No; I mean, I want to pay for the whole thing myself." The priest explained that this would be impossible, as the cost would be close to the equivalent of $5,000. Yo-San said he knew that, and then produced the actual amount of cash. The priest was astounded, and Yo-San had to explain.

Years ago, when he was a young man just receiving his first instruction in the faith, he had heard a former missionary explaining the words, "Hallowed be Thy Name" that the purpose of our life is to give glory to God. Hearing this, he conceived the desire to someday build a temple to God's name.

So, for forty years living with no family and no house, eating only a little rice, he had managed to lay aside most of his scanty wages till he had the $5,000. The priest was even more astounded, and objected to the plan, seeing that Yo-San was old and would soon need the money to support himself when he could no longer work. The old man said that God would take care of him and begged the priest to grant this life-long desire. The priest consented.

The church was built. And it was standing-room-only when the first Mass was celebrated there, all the Christians in the region overjoyed to have a church of their own. After the Mass, Yo-San stayed kneeling in the beautiful little church for a long time. That afternoon he was found lifeless, still kneeling, his heart broken with joy and gratitude. In a dream that night, the missionary priest saw Christ welcoming the old Yo San man into heaven, saying "Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Lord." Yo-San was a man who understood the real value of offering our poor efforts to God.

In today’s gospel, Jesus asked his apostles to hand over the little that they had, and he worked wonders with it. Could He perhaps be asking us to do the same? Which loaves and fish is God asking us to entrust to his care today, and right now? What do we have so little of that we are afraid to give it to God? Maybe God has been whispering to us for a while, asking us to spend some more time with Him each day in prayer, in reading a good spiritual book, in reflecting on the Bible, in serving the parish as Catechists, Ushers, Lectors, and others, and in building up our family.

But, we are so busy, well, if we have so little time! God will work wonders with whatever little bit of time we give him. Maybe God has put a desire in our heart to do something for him or for our neighbors, to start something new, to reach out to those in need, but, we have been afraid of trying, because, we are afraid of failing. God will multiply whatever little talent we have, if we put it sincerely and obediently into his hands. Maybe there is someone in our life that we need to speak a word of forgiveness to, or apologize to, or invite back to Mass, or encourage to walk away from some destructive, sinful habits. But, how will we know the right thing to say? God will turn our poor words into seeds of grace, if only we place them in his hands.

As Jesus performs the miracle of the Eucharist in this Mass, let's renew our confidence in him, and hand over whatever loaves and fish he is asking for. I'll guarantee one thing if we do: we won't regret it.

Trong đại lễ kỷ niệm fiesta của một số vùng nông thôn ở Philippines có những sự khá đặc biệt tất cả mọi người đều được hoan nghênh mời tham gia các bữa ăn tại bất kỳ nhà nào. Không cần mời; thức ăn mọi thứ đầy đủ và ngon miệng. Nhưng trong bài Tin Mừng hôm nay, việc cho hàng ngàn người trên ngọn đồi cỏ giữa nơi hiu quạnh xa làng phố hôm nay là một câu chuyện khác: nơi nào bạn tìm đủ bánh mì để nuôi năm ngàn người chỉ kể đàn ông, thậm chí không kể cả phụ nữ và trẻ em? Việc thú vị là Chúa Jêsus thậm chí còn hỏi một trong những môn đệ của mình là Philip là kiếm chỗ mua bánh để cho những người này ăn. Từ năm ổ bánh lúa mạch và hai con cá mà một cậu bé trong đám đông đã có, Chúa Giêsu đã cho hàng ngàn người ăn và họ còn thu được mười hai giỏ bánh mì vụn dư còn.

Trong bài đọc thứ Nhất, Sách các vua kể lại một sự cố tương tự là Tiên tri Elisha đã nuôi hơn một trăm người đàn ông với hai mươi ổ bánh mì do người Baal dâng. Phép lạ việc hoá bánh ra nhiều và cho nhiều người ăn là dấu hiệu cho chúng ta thấy được quyền năng của Thiên Chúa; Đấy cũng là một dấu hiệu của sự chăm sóc yêu thương mà Thiên Chúa đã dành cho con người nhất là những người đói ăn, khát uống.

Đối với chúng ta, đặc biệt là những phép lạ trên đã cho chúng ta thấy món quà vĩ đại của Chúa Kitô trong phép Thánh Thể, Chúa Giêsu đã cho chúng ta chính Mình và Máu của Ngài để làm của ăn và thức uống cho chúng ta để chúng ta có được sự sống đời đời. Chúa Giêsu luôn mãi mãi hiện diện bất cứ nơi nào và bất cứ khi nào phép Thánh Thể được cử hành.

REFLECTION Sunday 17th in Ordinary Time

There is something very special in town fiesta celebrations in some rural areas in the Philippines: all are welcome to partake of meals at any house. No invitation is needed; food is plentiful and good.

But, as in the Gospel reading today, feeding thousands among hills is a different story: where do you find enough bread to feed five thousand men, not even counting women and children? Interesting that Jesus even asked one of his disciples, Philip, where to buy enough bread for the thousands of people

From the five barley loaves and two fish which a boy in the crowd had, Jesus fed thousands of people and had twelve baskets of left-over bread.

The first reading from the Book of Kings narrates a similar incident of the prophet Elisha feeding a hundred men with twenty loaves of bread.

The miracles of feeding multitudes with a few loaves of bread are signs of the power of God; they are also a sign of God's loving care for the people who were hungry and needed to be fed. For us especially the feeding miracles foreshadowed Christ's great gift of himself in the Eucharist, giving us his presence and himself as food and drink looking forward to eternal life, wherever and whenever the Eucharist is offered and celebrated.

Suy Niệm Tin Mừng lễ kính Thánh Giacôbê tông đồ - (7/25)

Lời Chúa là con đường hướng dẫn những Kitô hữu chúng ta đến sự sống đời đời. Như lời Chúa hôm này đã dạy cho chúng ta là: Trước tiên là phải Phục vụ những nhu cầu của người khác. Đó là một Lời trái ngược lại với tất cả những gì mà thế giới hôm nay đang dạy mà muốn chúng ta làm. Chúng ta thường nghe người ta nói: những gì thế lực hay sức mạnh mà chúng ta đang có trong tay?

Ngày nay đa số chúng ta ai cũng ta muốn có chức vụ cao, có quyền hành trong cơ quan của chính phủ, trong các trường học, hay cả trong giáo hội, và trên thực tế là trong tất cả các lĩnh vực hoạt động của con người để hưởng lợi, để được sống vinh hoa, phú quý. Cái tâm lý chung của thế giới là để thống trị người khác. Đó là sức mạnh của thế lực mà chúng ta có thể được hưởng lợi, được người khác cầu cạnh đút lót. Và cuối cùng chúng ta sẽ được người khác phục vụ chúng ta theo như những gì chúng ta muốn và cần.

Nhưng đối với những người Kitô giáo chân chính thực sự thì đấy là điều ngược lại! Để trở thành người Kitô giáo đích thực, người Kitô hữu phải có sự suy nghĩ như Chúa Kitô, phải có những hành động như Chúa Kitô. Có nghĩa là sống trong một cách triệt để theo như Chúa Kitô, đó là sống trái ngược lại với các giá trị của thế giới bên ngoài.

Tin Mừng hôm nay Chúa mời gọi chúng ta đến với hạnh phúc thật sự, đó là đến để phục vụ như Chúa đã phục vụ người khác chứ không phải là để được phục vụ. Và nếu chúng ta làm đuợc như lời Chúa thì phần thưởng của chúng ta sẽ nhận được là chúng ta sẽ được gọi là con cái của Thiên Chúa và sẽ được ngồi cùng một bàn bữa tiệc trên Thiên quốc với Chúa, có lẽ chúng ta sẽ không được ngồi ngay bên phải hoặc bên trái của Chúa, nhưng chắc chắn là chúng ta được một chỗ nào đó trên thiên đàng.

Hôm nay chúng ta mừng kính thánh Giacôbê Tông Đồ, chúng ta hãy nên bắt chước và học hỏi nơi thánh Giacôbê người đã biết lắng nghe và thực hành lời Chúa và phục vụ Chúa trong việc mang Chúa đến với người khác và phục vụ cho đến chết và Ông đã chết vì đem Tin Mừng cho tất cả.

REFLECTION

St James was the son of Zebedee and brother of John, Evangelist and Apostle. He was born at Bethsaida in Galilee. He was the first apostle to die, martyred by Herod Agrippa I.

Today's Gospel is truly a word of life for all of us. Indeed, it shows the path of life for Christians. It gives us as a guideline: "Serve first the needs of other people. It is a word that is contrary to what the world tells us today. We often hear people say: What are we in power for? Today this is said in government, in school, in the family, in the church and in practically all areas of human activity. The mentality of the world is to dominate people. It is to have power so that we may benefit from that power. And in the end we will be served according to g lời Chúa

But Christianity is the opposite! To be Christian means to think like Christ, to act like Christ. It means to live in a radical way, that is, to live contrary to the values of the pagan world.

This Gospel invites us to the true happiness, which is to serve. And the reward will be that we shall be called sons and daughters of God and will sit at the Heavenly banquet, maybe not right or left, butbsurely somewhere there in Heaven. Let us all learn from James who served up to the end when he was martyred bring the Good News to all.

REFLECTION

St. James was one of the apostles who accompanied Jesus on Mount Tabor where the Transfiguration took place. After receiving the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, he went out and began to preach the gospel so persuasively that he infuriated the Jewish leadership to such an extent that they killed him.

Jesus knows us and will only call a few to the honor of imitating him so closely…"laying down your life for your friends" as St. James did. And while the vast majority of us will never come close to being a martyr in the physical sense, the Church gives us St. James' example of wholeheartedly following Jesus wherever he may take us. What Jesus asks of us is to try to discern what he wills for us and then try our very best to do that and to accept where it will lead us. This can sometimes be very difficult and the decision to accept it is sometimes as difficult a decision as the one that a martyr may have to make.

The idea that Jesus insists on: the desire to be great or `the first of all' must include being willing to be considered as a servant. In other words, in performing any act of service to others, it is best to remain anonymous; otherwise, as Jesus said, `they have already received their reward."

Reflection:

If we are serving the Lord, people may assume that we have already grown spiritually. But actually when we are faced with difficult problems, our faith is challenged and we fail to understand God's plan for us. During these times, we depend on our human strength and ability in coming up with solutions that more often lead us to failure after failure. We fail to put our trust wholly in God and forget that only He has the best solution to our problems. Thus we complain and worry. But despite our unfaithfulness, God has always been a faithful God and this can only be seen through the eyes of faith and with His grace. At times He does this by sending people to us at the right time and when we need them most. In our case, God sent us relief through the payment of a debt that was long overdue. It also came in the form of spiritual guidance from people who helped form us and bring us back to God. How blessed are we because God enabled us to experience His goodness.

Reflection:

In today's Gospel reading Jesus teaches us about his mission "to serve and to give his life to redeem many."James and his brother John supported by their mother asked for places of honor with Jesus. It was an opportune occasion for Jesus to teach them and his other disciples about the real meaning of service."To serve and give his life to redeem many:" Jesus served and gave his life to save humankind; he gave his life to show his love for us. He did everything out of love.

By experiencing Jesus' love and his goodness, hopefully we learn to love like Jesus. When we love like Jesus, the expression of love will come freely. When you truly love someone, it may cause you to suffer; authentic love remains even if we suffer, just as how Jesus loved as he suffered.

There is a saying that goes: "You have not loved enough if you have not suffered." Perhaps, this was the message of Jesus to his disciples when he taught them about service and giving up life for others.

He was already telling his disciples of the experience of the paschal mystery. Serve, suffer for the one you love. Die to yourself and you will experience the glory of the resurrection to meet our Father in heaven.

Reflection

«Can you drink the cup that I am about to drink?»

Today’s fragment of the Gospel narrates an episode that places us in front of a situation which is not unusual in the various Christian communities. Indeed, John and James have been very generous leaving behind their households and their nets to follow Jesus the Christ. They have heard the Lord announce a Kingdom and offer eternal life but they still fail to understand the new dimension the Lord puts forward to them. It is because of this that their mother is going to ask for something which is good enough, but which doesn’t go beyond a simple human ambition: «Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom» (Mt 20,21).

Similarly, we listen to the Lord and follow Him, like the first disciples, but not always do we fully understand his message; we then sometimes follow our personal interests and ambitions within the Church. We forget that when we accept the Lord we have to give ourselves wholly and with full trust in Him; that we cannot think in obtaining the glory without having accepted the cross.

The answer Jesus gives them puts the stress precisely on this aspect: in order to have a share in his Kingdom what matters is to drink from his same «cup» (see Mt 20, 22), i.e. to be ready and willing to give our own life for the love of God and dedicate ourselves to the service of our brethren with the same merciful attitude that Jesus showed. In his first homily Pope Francis emphasized that in order to follow Jesus we have to carry our cross, because «when we make our way without the cross, when we confess a Christ without his cross, we are not disciples of the Lord»As a consequence, following Christ demands from us great humility. From the minute of our Baptism we have been called to be his witnesses in order to transform the world. But this transformation will only be achieved if we are able to be servants of our brethren, with a spirit of great generosity and self-giving, but always joyful because we are following and making the Lord present.

Today, in the fragment of St. Matthew's Gospel we can find many teachings. I will however limit myself to underline just one, which refers to God's total control of events throughout time: whether of all men together (mankind), or of each and every human group (in our case, for instance, the family group of the Zebedees), or of any individual person. This is why Jesus clearly tells them: «You do not know what you are asking» (Mt 20:22).

To sit at Jesus Christ's right is for those his Father has prepared it: «To sit at my right or at my left is not for me to grant. That will be for those for whom the Father has prepared it» (Mt 20:23). Just like that, in a clear-cut way. There is an English saying that goes «Man proposes and God disposes». And it is so, precisely because God is God. Or we could also say it the other way round: if it was not so, God would not be God.

Before this fact, unquestionably overpowering any human determining factor, at the beginning, men are left with nothing else but acceptance and worship (because God has revealed himself to us as the Absolute); while marching on, with confidence and love (because God has revealed himself to us as a Father, too); and at the end..., that grand and definite end: to sit at Jesus' side (whether at his right or at his left, it does not matter at all). On our side, the enigma of divine election and predestination can only be solved with confidence. A milligram of confidence placed in God's heart is worth more than all the weight of the world put on our poor little scale pan. In fact, «St. James did not live long: this is because from the very beginning he was already burning with a great vehemence: he scorned all human things and climbed to such ineffable ceilings that he died immediately» (St. John Chrysostom).

Meditation: "Not to be served but to serve"

Who doesn't want to be first, and to be esteemed and honored by others? We seem to have an unquenchable thirst for recognition and fame, power and authority to rule our own lives as we please as well as the lives of others. Should we be surprised to see the disciples of Jesus thirsting for power, position, and authority? James and John, the sons of Zebedee, urged their mother to strike a deal with Jesus, their Master and Messiah. They wanted the distinction of being first and most important in position, next to Jesus, of course!

Jesus turns authority and power upside down

When Jesus called the twelve apostles to be his inner circle of disciples who would teach and exercise spiritual authority on his behalf, he did the unthinkable! Jesus taught contrary to the world's understanding of power, authority, and position, by reversing the order of master and servant, lord and subject, first and last! Jesus wedded authority with love, position with sacrifice, and service with humility. Authority without love is over-bearing and slavish. Position without respect and concern for the subordinate is demeaning and rude. And service without generosity and sacrifice is cheap and unkind.

Those who wish to serve with the Lord Jesus and to exercise authority in God's kingdom must be prepared to sacrifice - not just some of their time, money, and resources - but their whole lives and all that they possess! Jesus used stark language to explain what kind of sacrifice he had in mind. His disciples must drink his cup if they expect to reign with him in his kingdom. The cup he had in mind was a bitter one involving crucifixion. What kind of cup does the Lord have in mind for us? For some disciples such a cup entails physical suffering and the painful struggle of martyrdom. But for many, it entails the long routine of the Christian life, with all its daily sacrifices, disappointments, set-backs, struggles, and temptations.

Christ's way of love and service

A disciple of Jesus must be ready to lay down his or her life - each and every day in the little and big sacrifices required - and even to the point of shedding one's blood if necessary for the sake of Christ and his Gospel. What makes such sacrifice a joy rather than a burden? It is love - the kind of "love which God has poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us" (Romans 5:5). An early church father summed up Jesus' teaching with the expression: "to serve is to reign with Christ." We share in God's reign by laying down our lives in humble service and love for one another, just as Jesus did for our sake. Are you ready to lay down your life and to serve others as Jesus has taught and modeled for us?

"Lord Jesus, make me a servant of love for your kingdom, that I may seek to serve rather than be served. Inflame my heart with love that I may give generously and serve joyfully for your sake."

Meditation: 2 Corinthians 4:7-15 Saint James, Apostle (Feast)

We hold this treasure in earthen vessels. (2 Corinthians 4:7)

Have you ever come to the end of a long day and felt as if you were nothing but an earthen vessel—and a cracked pot at that? If someone were to ask you to take care of just one more thing, you would probably be tempted to say, “I couldn’t possibly … I just can’t … There’s no way.”

James the apostle was also an earthen vessel. His only trade was fishing, backbreaking manual labor for someone from the lower class. His personality was explosive too, earning him the nickname “sons of thunder” along with his brother, John (Mark 3:17). Remember, these were the two who wanted to call down “fire from heaven” to decimate a whole town that didn’t give Jesus the welcome they thought he deserved (Luke 9:54)!

It seems that James had a hard time understanding Jesus’ mission. After spending so much time following the Lord and watching him devote himself to tending to the wounded and troubled, all James wanted was to make sure he would get to play a prestigious role in the new regime (Matthew 20:20-28).

But despite all these weaknesses, Jesus invited James into his inner circle. He was right there when Jesus was transfigured, when he raised a little girl from the dead, and when he struggled in Gethsemane to unite his will with the Father’s. Through it all, James observed Jesus closely and tried to deepen his understanding and obedience. And his efforts were not in vain.

The next time you feel like an earthen vessel, “afflicted … perplexed … persecuted … struck down,” turn your attention to the treasure that you hold in this vessel (2 Corinthians 4:8, 9). It’s true that on your own, you lack the power to follow through, but it’s also true that the same power that filled and transformed James is just as alive and active in you. May James and all the apostles pray for us and help us learn how to rely on the grace that God has given us!

“Jesus, you are my greatest treasure. Thank you for choosing me just as you called James. Lord, I lay down my life at your feet.”

Nhiều khi trong cuộc sống thường ngày, chúng ta có những thái đô và hành động không khác như những người Biệt Phái Do Thái. Khi ai đó trong chúng ta lỡ may làm một điều gì đó sai lầm hay phạm một lỗi gì thì chúng ta chắn chắn sẽ sẵn sàng, không ngại ngùng lên án và phán xét họ, chúng ta theo Chúa, nhưng chúng ta lại phân loại những người chung quanh chúng ta và cắt đứt liên hệ với người chúng ta không thích.

Ngày và giờ cho sự phán xét vẫn chưa tới, Nước Trời của Thiên Chúa trong thời kỳ đang phát triển. Chúa Giêsu đã kiên nhẫn với mọi người chúng ta, đặc biệt là những người tội lỗi. Ngài rất miễn cưỡng để loại bỏ chúng ra. Trong sự liên hệ của chúng ta với những người khác, chúng ta phải nên ghi nhớ rằng cho dù trong một tâm hồn có bao nhiêu là ác ý, tội lỗi, nhưng ít nhất trong tâm hồn đó cũng có ít nhất một tia sáng của sự tốt lành. Và trong một quả tim dù có tốt lành bao nhiêu đi nữa thì thế nào cũng có một góc nhỏ trong trái tim đó cũng có chứa một chút ác.

Tất cả chúng ta là những hạt giống được gieo rãi bởi Thiên Chúa trong cùng một lĩnh vực, Chúng ta cùng chịu ngâm mình trong nước mưa, cùng chịu ảnh hưởng bay dạt trong gió bão, Chúng ta hãy xin Chúa ban cho chúng ta những ân sủng của Ngài để chúng ta có thể giúp đỡ lẫn nhau, để cùng được phát triển và hướng tới những gì mà Ngài đã kêu gọi chúng ta trong cuộc sống riêng của mỗi người, để tất cả chúng ta được xứng đáng là những người con yêu quý của Ngài.

Meditation: "An enemy sowed weeds among the wheat"

What can malicious weed-sowing tell us about the kingdom of God? The image Jesus uses here is a common everyday example of planting, harvesting, and sorting the good fruit from the bad. Weeds can spoil and even kill a good harvest if they are not separated and destroyed at the proper time. Uprooting them too early, though, can destroy the good plants in the process. Just as nature teaches us patience, so God's patience also teaches us to guard the word which he has planted in our hearts and to beware of the destructive force of sin and deception which can destroy it. God's word brings life, but Satan, the father of lies, seeks to destroy the good seed which God plants in the hearts of those who listen to his word. God's judgment is not hasty, but it does come. And in the end, God will reward each person according to what he or she has sown and reaped in this life. In that day God will separate the evil from the good. Do you allow God's word to take deep root in your heart?

"Lord Jesus, may your word take deep root in my heart and may I bear good fruit for your glory. May I hunger for your righteousness now that I may also look forward to the day of judgment with joy rather than with dismay."

Opening Prayer:

Lord Jesus, send your Spirit to sharpen my spiritual awareness of the influence of good and evil spirits in my daily life.

Encountering Christ:

1. The Kingdom of Heaven Here on Earth: Jesus made use of many parables to help us understand the value of the kingdom of heaven. He also taught us to pray for the kingdom to come and he preached repentance, “for the kingdom of God is at hand.” Listening to Jesus preach about the kingdom, we begin to understand that it is a dynamic process at work among us. He is the kingdom in his very presence. He desires to reign in us so we may possess his very life within. As we enter into his mystery and participate in the life of grace, the kingdom of God grows within and among us. But Jesus does not force it upon us. Being made in his image, we are free to receive or reject life. Part of this freedom involves being aware of the influences that affect our free choices. While on earth there is a battle brewing between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan. Are we aware of the battle? Which kingdom are we participating in?

2. Patience: As the good seed is sown, so also is the enemy at work, sometimes in unseen ways. God must exercise a lot of patience to allow for the growth of both types of seed to grow in the midst of his creation, a creation that he made good. If there were no hope of a decent harvest, the Lord might be “tempted” to strike down the world in one fell swoop. But he does not. He is patient, allowing us to share in his providential plan. The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us of the great dignity to which we are called. “To human beings, God even gives the power of freely sharing in his providence by entrusting them with the responsibility of subduing the earth and having dominion over it. God thus enables men to be intelligent and free causes in order to complete the work of creation, to perfect its harmony for their own good and that of their neighbors. Though often unconscious collaborators with God's will, they can also enter deliberately into the divine plan by their actions, their prayers, and their sufferings. They then fully become ‘God's fellow workers’ and coworkers for his kingdom” (CCC 307).

3. Deliberate Decisions: At the end of the parable, the Master instructed all the harvest to be collected. The weed was tied into bundles for burning, whereas the wheat was gathered into the Master’s barn. The image offers us food for thought and personal examination. What will we be able to harvest in our own life, Lord? What are the weeds? What is the wheat that we are tending? Life is too short to allow random growth and hope for the best. Let us be aware of our deliberate decisions. The choices we make are not indifferent to the kingdom of God. Let us ask him to sow good seed, to be attentive to any weeds, and to nourish the crop so that it may find its way to our good Master’s “barn.”

Conversing with Christ: Lord Jesus, help me to be attentive to the work of the good and evil spirits so that I may freely participate in building your kingdom in my heart and in the world. Thank you for your patience with me as I am transformed by your grace.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will be aware of the deliberate and intentional decisions I make that lead me toward you or away from you. I will desire to consciously participate in and build your kingdom.

REFLECTION

In the first reading the Prophet Jeremiah assures the people of God's promises and reward for those who are faithful to him and his commandments. God has special care for "the stranger, orphan or widow" and the little ones who are in great need: so should we.

`In the Gospel reading Jesus teaches us about the kingdom of God by comparing it to a field with good seed and weeds sown be an enemy. At harvest time the weeds will be gathered and burned and the wheat produce gathered. So also the good will be rewarded and the evil ones sent to eternal punishment.

Jesus came to proclaim the Good News of salvation. The evil One and his forces will do their best to prevent us from following Jesus and his commandments. We pray daily: "Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil."

We have to be steadfast in our ways and persevere in our following of Jesus.. Jesus is our leader in our journey; he will always be there to help us.

Chẳng có gì xảy ra, khi chúng ta không chịu mở lòng trí của chúng ta và từ chối chấp nhận lời Chúa, cũng như khi chúng ta không chịu rời khỏi chỗ để xem coi những điều gì đang xảy ra ngay bên cạnh mình. Khi chúng ta mở rộng tầm nhìn của chúng ta, chúng ta có thể trở biết nhiều hơn và trở thành một phần của cái gì đó lớn hơn bản thân mình.

REFLECTION

Once we open ourselves to the Word of God, we will grow in knowledge and understanding like the seed growing infertile soil. If we harden our hearts to what God hopes for us, then like seed in parched land that seed will not grow. Nothing happens. When we close our minds and refuse to accept His word, we do not leave room to consider anything else. When we widen our vision, we become part of something bigger than ourselves.

Our Lord is so generous to us. He continually showers His blessings upon us. He wants to share His life and His love in everything that we do. It is a continuous experience of birth and rebirth. We are made whole and new all over again.

The choice is up to us. We can decide to learn and enter into a world of self-discovery and love, or we can choose to shut out the light. Where would we rather be? It's a blessing to be in God's shining presence and to be refreshed by His words.

Opening Prayer:

Lord Jesus, you have the words of everlasting life. Grant that I may listen and preserve your precious word in my life.

Encountering Christ:

1. Let the Seed Be Sown: Jesus’s explanation of the parable was like an examination of conscience for our own lives. Let’s ask the Holy Spirit to elucidate his word for us. Jesus spoke of many obstacles to letting the seed be sown and bear fruit. The first scenario was a seed that fell on the path; the person lacked understanding, and hence the evil one came and snatched the word away. How quick we can be to let the word of God pass in one ear and out the other. An eager disposition to listen and understand is necessary to prepare the soil of our souls. The enemy is shrewd. He desires to snatch the word of God from our midst before it reaches our heart, particularly in the reading of the Gospel at Holy Mass. As Christians, we must be “shrewd as serpents” with anticipation of welcoming God’s word so that it may be sown and take root in our hearts and minds.

2. The Rocky Ground: Jesus warned of the seed that was sown on rocky ground. While it may have offered much joy initially, the person’s perseverance wavered quickly at the first sight of difficulties. How does this manifest itself in our lives? Does God’s word console us in times of ease and plenty? When circumstances are unfavorable, do we reject God’s word, seeking to forge our own path rather than looking for God’s presence and hand in the crosses of daily life? A rocky ground requires tilling and preparation of the soil to prepare for deep roots to settle in. What are the rocks in our life? How can we till the soil to prepare the way for deeper faith?

3. From Thorns to a Rich Harvest: Jesus used the analogy of thorns to refer to the anxieties and lures of the world. A heart clinging to possessions has little room to let God reign. The thorns can grow from our desire to control all circumstances or our grasping at security in the possession of material items. St. John of the Cross speaks of giving up all in order to possess all. A bird can fly only so high as his attachments permit him. Anxieties and lures of the world represent the string that keeps the bird flying in circles but never truly free. True freedom consists in being willing to let go of all in order to cling solely to God. In clinging to God, we are set free to fly. From the heights, we are then able to see and hold all things in and through God’s eyes. Then and only then, will we “bear fruit and yield a hundredfold.”

Conversing with Christ: Lord Jesus, open my mind and heart to your word. Help me to keep the soil of my soul always tilled and ready to receive your word. Give me right vision to live according to your will and bear fruit for your kingdom.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will ask the Holy Spirit to help me to listen to his word and let go of whatever fills the space that he should possess.

Bài Tin Mừng hôm nay muốn chúng ta chiêm ngắm Thiên Chúa như một người nông dân tốt và đại lượng, người mà đã quá cao thượng và phong phú trong lĩnh vực gieo trồng trên đất ruộng của mình. Ngài đã không tiếc bất cứ điều gì để cứu chuộc con người; Ngài đã trao phó tất cả mọi thứ trong tay Con Một của Ngài, là Chúa Giêsu, người mà đã ví như hạt giống được gieo vào đất tốt (cái chết và sự chôn lấp), với sự phục sinh lành thánh của Ngài, đã trở thành cuộc sống và sự sống lại của chúng ta.

Thiên Chúa là một người nông dân biết cách chờ đợi, Thời gian thuộc về Thiên Chúa Cha, vì Ngài là người duy nhất biết được về ngày giờ (Mc 13:32) của vụ thu hoạch. Reflection «Now listen to the parable of the sower»

Today, we contemplate God as a good and magnanimous farmer, who has so richly sown his field. He has not spared anything for the redemption of man; He has vested everything in his own Son Jesus Christ who, as the seed sown in the good soil (death and burial), with his saint Resurrection has become our own life and resurrection.

God is a farmer who knows how to wait. Time belongs to the Father, for He is the only one to know about the day or the hour (cf. Mk 13:32) of the harvest and threshing. And God waits. And we must also wait while synchronizing the watch of our hopes with God's design of salvation. St. James says: «See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains» (Jas 5:7). God waits on the crop that grows thanks to his grace. And we must also stay on our toes; we must collaborate with God's grace by giving him our cooperation and opposing no obstacles to this transforming action of God.

God's crop, which here on earth, grows and bears fruit, is a feat visible through its effects; we can see them in actual miracles and in clamorous examples of saintliness of life. There are plenty of people that after having heard all the words and din of this world are hungry and thirsty for the authentic Word of God, wherever it is, alive and incarnated. There are thousands who live their belonging to Jesus Christ and to the Church with the same enthusiasm than in the first times of the Gospel, because the divine word «finds the soil where to germinate and bear fruit» (St. Augustine); we must therefore raise our morale and look at our future with the eyes of the faith.

The success of the crop does not depend upon our human strategies or upon our marketing techniques, but upon God's initiative of salvation “rich in mercy” and upon the efficiency of the Holy Spirit, that can transform our lives so we can bear the delicious fruits of charity and of contagious joy.

Meditation:

How good are you at listening, especially for the word of God? God is ever ready to speak to each of us and to give us understanding of his word. This parable of Jesus is a warning to those who hear and who preach the word of God. What makes us ineffective and unresponsive to God's word? Preoccupation with other things can distract us from what is truly important and worthwhile. And letting our hearts and minds be consumed with material things can easily weigh us down and draw us away from the treasure that lasts for eternity.

Allowing God's word to take root in our heart

God's word can only take root in a receptive heart which is docile and ready to hear what God has to say. One lesson is clear: the harvest is sure.While some seed will fall by the wayside and some fall on shallow ground and never come to maturity, and some be choked to death by the thorns; nonetheless a harvest will come. The seed that falls on good soil, on the heart that is receptive, will reap abundant fruit. Are you teachable and eager to learn God's truth? And do you allow anything to keep you from submitting to God's word with joy and trusting obedience?

The parables of Jesus

Today, we wonder: can Jesus' words be also intended for us? The fullness of time is brought with him, and we find ourselves in this fullness; we are already in Christ's time, in Salvation's time...

Certainly, we have not seen Jesus with our own eyes, but we have, indeed, known Him. We do know Him. We have not heard his voice with our own ears, but we have definitely heard his words. We do hear them. The knowledge our faith gives us, even though not perceptible, is a true knowledge, which brings us near the truth making us, therefore, feel happy and jubilant. Let us not look at Jesus from today to yesterday, but from today to today; let us actually share his time, a never-ending time. Jesus, the prayer and the Eucharist assure us this nearness to You, and make us really happy while looking at You with the eyes and ears of our faith.

«Blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears, because they hear»

Today, we remember the “encomium” Jesus Christ addressed to those around him in those days: «Blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears, because they hear» (Mt 10:16). And we wonder: can Jesus' words be also intended for us, or only for those who saw and heard him directly? It looks like they, who were lucky enough to share their lives with Jesus, and physically and sensibly remained by his side, should be the only blessed ones. Whereas we should rather belong in the group of the upright people and prophets —without being either the upright ones or the prophets! — we would have liked to see and hear.

But we should not forget the Lord is referring to righteous people and prophets before his arrival, before his Revelation: «For I tell you that many prophets and upright people would have longed to see the things you see, but they did not» (Mt 10:17). The fullness of time is brought with him, and we find ourselves in this fullness; we are already in Christ's time, in Salvation's time... Certainly, we have not seen Jesus with our own eyes, but we have, indeed, known him. We do know him. We have not heard his voice with our own ears, but we have definitely heard his words. We do hear them. The knowledge our faith gives us, even though not perceptible, is a true knowledge, which brings us near the truth making us, therefore, feel happy and jubilant.

Let us be grateful to our Christian faith, let us be joyous. Let us try to make our relationship with Jesus not a remote one, but as close as possible one, as that of those disciples, who were by his side, who saw and heard him, treated him. Let us not look at Jesus from today to yesterday, but from today to today; let us actually share his time, a never-ending time. Prayer —to speak with the Lord— and the Eucharist —to receive him— assure us this nearness to him, and make us really happy while looking at him with the eyes and ears of our faith. «Receive, therefore, God's image, that you lost because of your bad deeds» (St. Augustine).

Reflection

The encounter of the Israelites with God on Mt. Sinai was a terrifying experience. It was dangerous, requiring all sorts of precautionary measures and purifications. The ancient peoples believed that an experience of the divine was fraught with danger, and they tried to keep their distance. This is certainly not the sort of God we pray to, or the sort of God who was incarnate in Jesus Christ. We need to put the frightening images out of our mind and know that we can approach God through Jesus as though to a friend.

Why didn’t Jesus give all of his teachings in a plain and clear manner? Why did he use parables? Often we do not benefit from what is merely given to us. We need to wrestle with teachings, pondering over the meaning. Parables are designed to rest in our mind and work on our way of looking at things. If we are spiritually alive, we will benefit from the parable over time. Our life can be like a parable too — many things do not make immediate sense. It is only when we reflect and pray in light of our experience that things become clearer.

Those with an open heart and mind are usually able to break open the inner meaning of the parables. Let us not be too quick to make judgments or decisions, but take the time to probe the deeper levels of meaning. Lord, grant me a discerning heart and mind.

Hôm nay chúng ta mừng lễ Thánh nữ Maria Mađalêna, một người phụ nữ không những chỉ là một đệ tử trung thành và thân tín Chúa Kitô mà còn là một người thật sự yêu kính Chúa Giêsu. Đáng tiếc thay là trong thời chúng ta đang sống hôm nay, nhiều người trong chúng ta có lẽ lo ngại hay có sự nghi ngờ về ba Maria Mađalêna. Nhiều người trong chúng ta cảm thấy khó chịu trong sự thân mật mà cô đã dành cho Chúa Giêsu. Trong bài đọc Tin Mừng hôm nay, Thánh Gioan mô tả những cuộc gặp gỡ của bà với Chúa Giêsu có vẻ như thân thiện hơn nhiều so với sự thân mật bình thường. Vì thế nó không giúp ích cho Maria Mađalên khi bà đã bị người khác nhầm lẫn và miêu tả bà ở trong phim trường Hollywood như là một người tình bất hợp pháp của Chúa Giêsu hay là một cô gái đã từng làm nghề mại dâm (mà cô thực sự là không phải thế..vì có rất nhiều Maria trong những bài Tin Mừng.)

Trong suốt các bài Tin Mừng, Bà Maria Mađalêna đã phải tranh đấu với những khó khăn và sự sỉ nhục, đau thương. Bà cũng bị quỷ ám và cũng bị mọi người thân cận bỏ rơi trước khi Chúa Giêsu trừ quỷ và chữa khỏi bà. Và bà cũng chính mắt chứng kiến cái cái Chết cực hình của người bạn thân thương nhất của bà là Chúa Giêsu đã chết trên thập tự giá. Tóm lại, trong thời gian của bà và cho đến ngày nay, chúng ta đã không chịu để cho Maria Mađalêna có được nhiều thời gian nghỉ ngơi. Ngoại trừ Đức Giêsu, Đấng đã làm.

Chúa Giêsu là người bạn thật chân tình của bà trong tất cả các bạn. Ngài không những chỉ chữa cho bà được khỏi bệnh, nhưng cũng giảng dạy riêng cho bà về Nước Trời nữa mặc dù những người khác phàn nàn và khiếu nại, Để đáp lại, bà Maria Mađalên đã hiến dâng cho Chúa tất cả, Bà đã đầu hàng tầt cả những gì mà bà có và hàng ao ước để lắng nghe và sống trưởng thành với đức tin của mình trong Chúa Giê-su. Bà Maria Mađalên là một mô hình của đức tin và tình bạn hữu của Chúa cho chúng ta. REFLECTION

Today we remember St. Mary Magdalene, a woman who not only was a loyal and faithful disciple of Christ but also a person who truly loved Jesus.It is unfortunate that in our present day, many of us are apprehensive or suspicious of Mary Magdalene. Many of us find discomfort in the intimacy she had with Jesus. In today's gospel reading, St. John's description of the meeting of Mary and Jesus may seem more than friendly than it is joyful. It doesn't help that Mary Magdalene has been mistakenly portrayed in Hollywood as an illegitimate lover of Jesus or as an ex-prostitute (which she really wasn't).Mary Magdalene throughout the Gospels contended with difficulties and traumas. She was possessed of demons and likely an outcast before Jesus cured her. And she watched her friend Jesus die on the cross. In short, during her time and up to the present, we haven't been giving Mary Magdalene much of a break. Except Jesus who did.Jesus was her one true friend throughout it all. He not only cured her, but also taught to her, and stuck with her despite the complaints of others. In response, Mary gave her all to listen to and grow her faith with Jesus hence it comes as no surprise she became one of His most faithful disciples and best of friend.Mary Magdalene is a model of faith and friendship. In the face of antagonism and negative sentiment, which we often experience today, we could really use her example in our own personal relationship with the Lord "Lord, may I never fail to recognize your voice nor lose sight of your presence in your saving word."

Opening Prayer: Lord Jesus, grant me a heart that seeks to encounter you, and in finding you, desires to share you with others.

Encountering Christ:

1. The Long Wait: How eager Mary Magdalene must have been early Sunday morning to go in search of her rabboni, if only to see him one last time and finish the preparations of his burial. Imagine her long wait. How does your own heart long to encounter the Lord? At the first possible moment, when Sabbath finally was officially over, she set out in search of him. To her dismay, her hope was not immediately satisfied. He was nowhere to be found. But Jesus did not disappoint. He saw her longing heart and answered the prayer expressed in her desires. Do we trust that Jesus also answers the deepest longings of our hearts, when they are centered on what is essential—to encounter our living God?

2. Stop Clinging to Me: Unsurprisingly, Mary clung to Jesus as soon as she realized who stood before her. Yet Jesus had other plans. Perhaps her faith was to be further purified, making her already-converted heart even more beautiful. Jesus helped her to realize how she would relate to her God now: “I am going to my Father and to your Father.” She would no longer cling to Jesus in the human way she desired before. She would discover her identity as a daughter, called by the Son, to be a beloved child of a heavenly Father. While she might not understand this immediately, her love for Jesus was bolstered in trust as she came to a deeper awareness of his plan. In our life, are we willing to wait patiently for understanding, and to trust that Jesus has a greater plan for us, beyond what we immediately grasp and cling to?

3. “I Have Seen the Lord”: With Mary’s new identity came a new mission: “Go to my brothers and tell them…” With what promptness she took on this mission! She was sent and did not hold back. She went to the leaders of the pack. Without doubt, she was the Apostle to the Apostles, as tradition states. Neither the Apostles’ status, nor their opinions, deterred her from sharing the good news. And me? Does my heart leap to share the good news wherever and whenever the Spirit prompts me?

Conversing with Christ: Lord Jesus, help me to know more fully my identity as a beloved child of a heavenly Father. From this identity, grant me the courage to witness your victory over sin and death.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will reflect on how I can be an apostle to those around me, as Mary Magdalene was.

Reflection

Today, we celebrate with joy Saint Mary Magdalene. With joy and benefit for our faith!, because her trail could very well be ours. Magdalene came from afar (cf. Luke 7: 36-50) and she did go very far... Indeed, at the dawn of That morning, Jesus Christ discovered her the most important fact of our faith: that she was also God’s daughter.

In Mary of Magdala’s itinerary, we discover some important aspects of our faith. In the first place, we admire her courage. Though a gift from God, faith requires courage from the believer. Generally, we tend towards what we can see, what can be seized with our hand. God being essentially invisible, faith “represents the risky enterprise of accepting what plainly cannot be seen as the truly real and fundamental. It involves a leap out of the tangible world” (Benedict XVI). Mary, by seeing the risen Christ can also "see" the Father, the Lord. On the other hand, the "leap to faith" «is reached through what the Bible calls conversion or repentance: only he who changes receives it "(Benedict XVI). Was not this Mary’s first step? Should not this also be a reiterated step in our lives?

In the conversion of Magdalene, there was much love: she did not spare any perfumes for her Love. Love!: here is another "vehicle" of faith, because we neither hear, nor see or believe whom we do not love. In John’s Gospel it clearly appears «believing is to listen and, at the same time, to see (...)». In that dawn, María Magdalena takes risks for her Love, she listens to her Love (to hear Him saying "Mary" is enough for her to recognize Him) and she meets the Father. «On the morning of Easter (...), María Magdalena, is asked to contemplate Him as He ascends to the Father, and finally to her full confession "I have seen the Lord" (Jn 20:18)» (Pope Francis).

Reflection

Today, we celebrate the festivity of St. Mary Magdalene. Youngsters usually get crazy over a movie to the point of identifying themselves with some of the characters there. We, Christians, should always be young at heart before the life of Jesus of Nazareth, and identify ourselves with this great woman, Mary of Magdala, whom the Gospel speaks to us about. She followed Jesus' path, she listened to his Word, and Christ reciprocated her by granting her the historic privilege of being the person whom Christ's feat of resurrection was first communicated to.

The evangelist says that, initially, she did not recognize him. And she took him for the gardener. But when the Lord calls her by her name: «Mary», maybe because of the peculiar way to say it, this saint woman did not doubt anymore: «She turned and said to him, ‘Rabboni’ —which means, “Master”—» (Jn 20:16). After this first meeting with Jesus, she was the first one to run out to announce it to the other disciples: «So Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord, and this is what he said to me’» (Jn 20:18).

Christians that, in their daily life programs, care about his relationship with Christ in the Eucharist by devoting a few instants to contemplative praying and cultivating the assiduous reading of Jesus' Gospels, will also have the privilege of hearing that personal call from the Lord. It is the same Christ who personally calls us by our name and encourages us to follow the steady path to saintliness.

«Prayer is conversation and dialogue with God: contemplation for absent-minded, certainty of what we are expecting, equal basis of honor with angels, progress and increase of goods, remission of sins, remedy for all ills, fruit of current goods and, guarantee for future goods» (St. Gregory of Nyssa).

Let us tell the Lord: —Jesus, make my friendship with you so strong and profound that, as Mary of Magdala, we know how to recognize you in my life.

Meditation: "I have seen the Lord!"

Do you recognize the presence and reality of the Lord Jesus in your life? How easy it is to miss the Lord when our focus is on ourselves! Mary Magdalene did not at first recognize the Lord Jesus after he had risen from the grave because her focus was on the empty tomb and on her own grief. It took only one word from the Master, when he called her by name, for Mary to recognize him.

Recognizing the Lord's presence in our lives

Mary's message to the disciples, I have seen the Lord, is the very essence of Christianity. It is not enough that every Christian know something about the Lord, but that each one of us know him personally and intimately. It is not enough to argue about him, but that we meet him. Through the power of his resurrection we can encounter the living Lord who loves us personally and shares his glory with us.

The Lord Jesus gives us "eyes of faith" to see the truth of his resurrection and his victory over sin and death (Ephesians 1:18). The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of our hope - the hope that we will see God face to face and share in his everlasting glory and joy.

Without having seen him you love him; though you do not now see him you believe in him and rejoice with unutterable and exalted joy. As the outcome of your faith you obtain the salvation of your souls (1 Peter 1:8-9).

Do you recognize the Lord's presence with you, in his word, in the "breaking of the bread", and in his church, the body of Christ?

"Lord Jesus, may I never fail to recognize your voice nor lose sight of your presence in your saving word."

Meditation: John 20:1-2, 11-18 Saint Mary Magdalene (Memorial)

Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark. (John 20:1)

Few women in Scripture have been the subject of as much speculation and scrutiny as Mary Magdalene, whose feast we celebrate today. Yet despite all this attention, popular culture still confuses her with the penitent “sinful woman” in Luke 7:36-50. But rather than being remembered for repentance, contrition, and sinfulness, Mary should stand out in our minds as a model of faithfulness.

Mary had good reason to be faithful to Jesus. He had driven seven demons out of her (Luke 8:1-2). This was most likely the beginning of her journey with him, and it set her on a path of discipleship, a path that led her to become one of the foremost women who followed him. As one of a group of women who supported Jesus financially, Mary was no mere camp follower. She believed enough in him that she was willing to back it up with her money and to leave behind a comfortable life in order to walk with the Master.

Imagine the miracles Mary must have witnessed and the excitement she must have felt on this journey! But it wasn’t all signs and wonders. It was a difficult path as well, a path that led her to the foot of the cross, where she watched Jesus die an agonizing death. Mourning and confused, Mary must have felt like a ship adrift. “What now?” she must have asked.

Here is where we see Mary’s faithfulness and love most clearly. Rejecting the urge to flee and to distance herself from Jesus’ disciples, she was one of just a few people to stay with him as he was buried. She was one of the three women who risked arrest just to anoint his body. And in the end, her loyalty was rewarded: she was the first person in history to see the risen Lord!

What an honor! Rightly does Mary deserve the title “Apostle to the Apostles.” One of the greatest women in the Bible, her story is an example of the closeness with God that rewards a grateful, faithful heart that pursues him ardently. “Lord, thank you for the example of Mary Magdalene and her life. Help me to emulate her love and devotion.”

Trong bài đọc một, Tiên tri-Jeremiah được thiện Chúa chỉ định và đặt tiên tri. Thiên Chúa "biết", "chuyên dụng", và "bổ nhiệm" ông làm tiên tri cho dân của Chúa. Ông Jeremiah đã cố từ chối và việc cớ rằng "Tôi không biết cách ăn nói; Tôi còn quá trẻ " đó là nỗ lực mà ông muống tránh thoát khỏi những khó khăn khị (bị) được gọi làm tiên tri. Ông Jeremiah biết là các tiên tri thường phải sống một cuộc sống cô đơn, thường bị khinh thường, bị chối bỏ và bị ngược đãi trong cuộc sống và có thể bị giết hại. Lạy Chúa, giúp chúng con trung thành trong viện loan báo Tin Mừng.

Reflection Wednesday 16th Ordinary Time

Unless someone is called by God and sent as God's prophet to the people of the Covenant, there is no reason why they should listen to him. So, Jeremiah establishes his credentials as a prophet. That is, God “knew”, “dedicated”, and “appointed” him to be “a prophet to the nations”. Jeremiah’s excuse that “I do not know how to speak; I am too young” is an attempt to escape the difficulties of the prophetic call. Jeremiah knew the prophets lead a lonely life, are frequently scorned, often persecuted and rejected during their lives. Jeremiah’s only assurance is God’s promise, “I am with you to deliver you.” In the Gospel, Jesus preaches the parable of the sower. The sower casts the seeds everywhere in the field, but is unable to tell what may be the result of his sowing. A great number of seed may seem wasted. Bible commentators say that Jesus told this parable to encourage his followers. He knew that, like him, they will face ridicule, rejection and even persecution when proclaiming the Good News. They will face discouragement when what they sow does not seem to bear fruit. Yes, a great number of seed may seem wasted, yet the success and abundance of the seed is assured. There is so much evil, and vengeance in the world, so it is our duty to sow seeds of goodness, love and forgiveness. By doing so, we show our faithfulness to our God. To be faithful to God is to try to imitate his goodness, to tell people about his existence and to defend the oppressed and the lowly. Despite much opposition from religious and political leaders, and poor response from the people, Jesus expresses confidence that God will see to the triumph of his kingdom and of its proclamation. Lord, help me faithfully proclaim the Good News.

Opening Prayer:

Lord Jesus, open my spiritual ears to hear your word. Grant me true freedom that welcomes you with a spirit ready to obey your promptings.

Encountering Christ:

1. Jesus’s Availability: During Jesus’s public life near the Sea of Galilee, he began to attract many followers. The large crowds were quick to find him and he attended to their needs, making himself available so that they would be fed, not only with food that nourishes the body but with his word that nourishes the spirit. Two thousand years later he continues to make himself available, in his word and in the Eucharist. We need only to have a heart like those who sought him out and stood along the shore to take in every word and accept his gift of “our daily bread.”

2. A Parable to Remember: Jesus used imagery that spoke to something very familiar in his followers’ lives— the sowing of seed. They could identify with the preparation of the land and all the elements that could work contrary to good cultivation of the seed. But the parable speaks to us today as well. Nature hasn’t changed. His words can still resonate in our twenty-first-century hearts. What are the thorns, the sun that scorches, or the rocky ground that threatens the life of Christ within us? How well do we cultivate the soil of our soul to receive the word of God?

3. Ears to Hear With: Jesus ended his parable saying, “Whoever has ears to hear, ought to hear.” He was reminding us that we are all capable of receiving his word, but perhaps we do not permit it. True listening requires the right disposition, which is a spirit ready to use our freedom to obey the voice of God. We must be ready, like Elijah, to hear God's voice that comes as a soft breeze or whisper. We must be willing to root out the distractions that create thorns and rocky soil, so as to truly receive the Lord, ready and willing to speak to our hearts.

Conversing with Christ: Lord Jesus, thank you for revealing yourself and your holy will through your word. Help me to reverence you as I listen to sacred Scriptures. Help me to take the time to pray and ponder your word.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will set aside time to pray with sacred Scriptures, asking the Holy Spirit to open my spiritual ears to hear what you wish to speak to me.

Reflection Wednesday 16th Ordinary Time

In the Gospel, Jesus preaches the parable of the sower. The sower casts the seeds everywhere in the field, but is unable to tell what may be the result of his sowing. A great number of seed may seem wasted. Bible commentators say that Jesus told this parable to encourage his followers. He knew that, like him, they will face ridicule, rejection and even persecution when proclaiming the Good News. They will face discouragement when what they sow does not seem to bear fruit. Yes, a great amount of seed may seem wasted, yet the success and abundance of the seed is assured.

There is so much evil, and vengeance in the world, so it is our duty to sow seeds of goodness, love and forgiveness. By doing so, we show our faithfulness to our God. To be faithful to God is to try to imitate his goodness, to tell people about his existence and to defend the oppressed and the lowly. Despite much opposition from religious and political leaders, and poor response from the people, Jesus expresses confidence that God will see to the triumph of his kingdom and of its proclamation. Lord, help me faithfully proclaim the Good News.
