AMen

Opening Prayer:
Lord, open my heart a little wider during this time of prayer. Help me to see how much you want to love me, and how I often get in the way. Let me set aside all worries, distractions, and fears, and say yes to your invitation to spend this time with you.
Encountering Christ:
Cherished: Jesus prayed not only for the disciples but for each believer, each one of us before we existed. We have been created out of love, and we are loved beyond our understanding. Do we believe this is true? Comparing ourselves to the saints, our friends, or social media posts often leaves us feeling deficient. “Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, and God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are something, so that no human being might boast before God” (1 Corinthians 1:27-29). Our misery attracts his mercy. As St. Therese wrote to her sister, “In order to love Jesus, to be his victim of love, the weaker one is...the more one is fit for the workings of this transforming and consuming love...let us stay quite far from all that shines, let us love our littleness” (I Believe in Love, Father Jean C.J. d’Elbee, 72). In the spirituality of St. Therese, this littleness is what causes the Father to sweep us up into his arms.
They Are Your Gift to Me: Did you know you are a gift to Jesus? How is it possible that Jesus treasures our existence? What did we do to deserve his love? The boundlessness of God’s mercy is beyond our human understanding. “We apply to the heart of Jesus the measure of our own miserable little hearts, so mean, so narrow, so hard, and we do not succeed in comprehending how good, how indulgent, how compassionate, how gentle, and how patient is Jesus himself” (d’Elbee, 73). The only way our tiny hearts and minds can grasp the love God has for us is to see it reflected in this prayer of Jesus to his Father. He prayed out loud not for himself, but for us to see how great we are treasured.
You Loved Me before the Foundations of the World: When we focus just on ourselves, we can become miserable very quickly. Jesus intended for us to share in the Trinitarian communion of love so “that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them.” When we are caught up in the Father’s arms, we forget about ourselves and we cast ourselves on his infinite mercy. Then the merits of Jesus are my own, as Therese says: “In the evening of this life I shall appear before you with empty hands, for I do not ask you to count my works...I want therefore to cloth myself in your own justice and receive from your love the eternal possession of yourself” (d’Elbee, 76). If we can get out of the way and let Jesus act, he can bring us to the Father as his child.
Conversing with Christ: Lord, I come before you with empty hands to receive the graces you want to give me. Help me to receive your love so I can radiate it to those around me.
Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will renew my trust in the Father’s love by saying, “Father, I love you, and I believe in your love for me.”

Reflection:
In the first reading, St. Paul, knowing that his audience was composed of two factions, Pharisees and Sadducees, starts to talk about a point of contention between them. This led to a bitter dispute between the two groups, and they forget about Paul whom they opposed because of his preaching of Jesus.
When there is no unity in a group, there is chaos, and that is what happened in the first reading. There are many obstacles to overcome in order to achieve unity.
We must work to achieve the unity that Christ prayed for at the Last Supper. In the Church the Eucharist is the sacrament which unifies all its members with Christ and with one another.
The sacrament of matrimony is also meant to portray the unity of the members of the Church with Christ, its head. Couples are called to be one in love for each other.
The Triune God is One in the Godhead, "three Persons equal in majesty, undivided in splendor, yet one Lord, one God." May all the believers and followers of Christ achieve the unity Christ prayed for at the Last Supper, as we pray on the feast of the Chair of St. Peter, Apostle, "Grant, we pray, almighty God, that no tempests may disturb us, for you have set us fast on the rock of the Apostle Peter's confession of faith."

Meditation: “May they become perfectly one”
When you pray what do you usually ask for - God's help, blessing, guidance, and wisdom? One of the greatest privileges and responsibilities we have been given by God is to pray not only for ourselves, but for others as well. The Lord Jesus lived a life full of prayer, blessing, and gratitude. He prayed for his disciples, especially when they were in great need or danger. Mark tells us in his Gospel account (see chapter 6:46-51) that when Jesus was praying alone on the mountain he saw that his disciples were in great distress due to a life-threatening storm that was beating against their boat. Jesus immediately came to their rescue - walking on the waves of the rough waters before he calmed them! Luke records in his gospel account the words of Jesus to Simon Peter shortly before Jesus' arrest and Peter's denial of the Lord three times. "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers" (Luke 22:32). Jesus' prayers were personal, direct, and focused on the good of others.
The longest recorded prayer of Jesus is found in the Gospel of John, the "high priestly" prayer which Jesus prayed aloud at his last supper meal with his disciples (John 17). This prayer most clearly reveals the heart of Jesus - who and what he loved most - love for his Father and love for those who believed in him. His prayer focused on the love and unity he desired for all who would believe in him and follow him, not only in the present, but in the future as well. Jesus' prayer concludes with a petition for the unity among all Christians who profess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Jesus prays for all men and women who will come after him and follow him as his disciples. In a special way Jesus prays here for each one of us that as members of his body the church we would be one as he and his Father are one. The unity of Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, with the eternal Father is a unity of mutual love, service, and honor, and a oneness of mind, heart, and spirit. The Lord Jesus calls each and every one of his followers into this unity of mutual love, service, honor, and friendship with all who belong to Christ.
Jesus’ prayer on the eve of his sacrifice shows the great love and trust he had for his beloved disciples. He knew they would abandon him in his hour of trial, yet he entrusted to them the great task of spreading his name throughout the world and to the end of the ages. The Lord Jesus entrust us today with the same mission - to make him known and loved by all. Jesus died and rose again that all might be one as he and the Father are one. Do you love and accept all baptized Christians as your brothers and sisters in Christ?
The Lord Jesus included each one of us in his high priestly prayer at the last supper. He continues his high priestly office this very day as our intercessor at the right hand of the Father before the throne of heaven. Paul the Apostle tells us that it is "Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us" (Romans 8:34; see also Hebrews 7: 25). Do you join in Jesus' high priestly prayer that all who profess Jesus as Lord may grow in love and unity together as brothers and sisters who have been redeemed through the precious blood shed for us on the cross?
"Heavenly Father, have mercy on all your people and heal the divisions in the body of Christ. May all Christian people throughout the world attain the unity for which Jesus prayed on the eve of his sacrifice. Renew in us the power of the Spirit that we may be a sign of that unity and a means of its growth. Increase in us a fervent love for all our brothers and sisters in Jesus Chri

Reflection SG:

The Gospel readings for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for this 7th week of Easter are best taken together. They make up the seventeenth chapter of St John’s Gospel. They present us in prayer form the concerns that were in the heart of Jesus as he was about to leave the Supper Room for Gethsemane and Calvary.

While he prayed for “all people” he prayed in particular for those present in the Supper Room and all those others who worked with him in his mission to make present the Kingdom of God among the men and women of first century Jerusalem, Judea and Galilee.

Strikingly, however, he prayed explicitly for those generations to come who would believe in him because of the words of the disciples present in the room and of their successors. In short he prayed for you and for me, believers as we are in him. He prayed that we would be united and that is very important in this divided world. He prayed too that we would see him clearly, personally in his glory in heaven. What a thought to have in our minds for the day.

When we tell our friends that we are praying for them they are happy. We are happy and consoled when we know that they are praying for us. What a boost it is for us when we realize that Jesus prayed for us and is praying for us. How true are those words of the hymn, “What a friend we have in Jesus”!

Dear Jesus, friend and inspirer, help us to believe in your continuing, loving interest in us.

Opening Prayer: Lord, I come to this time of prayer with a desire to know you better. I want to know your truth by knowing your word. Fill me with the truth so I will be filled with joy.

Encountering Christ:

·         In the Name of God: Jesus lifted up his heart, prayed to his Father, and begged him on our behalf to “keep them in your name that you have given me.” Jesus’s name is the one by which “God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend (Philippians 2:9-10). The name of Jesus is different from other names, for it is what it signifies: Jesus (Y’shua in Hebrew) is “savior, deliverer”; he redeemed us and rescued us. When we whisper the Jesus Prayer: “Jesus, son of the Living God, have mercy on me, a sinner,” we invoke a name that is powerful in protecting us from evil and darkness. We can whisper this prayer, or simply his name, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,” when we are afraid or tempted.

·         Son of Destruction: Jesus referred to Judas as the “son of destruction.” Jesus had called him, allowed him into his inner circle of disciples, and treated him lovingly. What sorrow Jesus must have felt by Judas’s betrayal. “Those who do wrong deserve our tears…For the covetous man and the slanderer, and the man guilty of any other wrongdoing injure themselves most of all […] Christ repaid the man who was going to betray him with just the opposite. For example, he washed his feet, reproved him without bitterness, censured him in private, ministered to him, allowed him to share in his table and his kiss. Yet, though Judas did not become better because of these things, Jesus himself persevered in his course of action” (St. John Crysostom). Jesus knew Judas would betray him, but he did not give up on Judas or neglect him. Jesus pursued him to the end, though eventually he was “lost.” What a beautiful challenge Christ sets before us by the loving way he treated Judas.

·         Consecrated in Truth: Jesus desired that his disciples share the fullness of his joy by sharing in his Trinitarian life, “because they do not belong to the world.” Jesus called his disciples to follow him on a path that renounced earthly goods. He knew that the world would hate them, for their mission was to follow Christ and find their joy in him, and not in the attractions of the world. Their joy was fulfilled in discovering their mission to share Christ with others, and the early Christians did this as they “devoted themselves to the teaching of the Apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers” (Acts 2:42). Simple Christian living in small community home churches spread through the whole world. We can imitate their devotion by sharing our joy in Christ with others, especially those in our parish and our neighborhood.

Conversing with Christ: Lord, I want to follow you with the authentic faith of the disciples. Help me find joy in living my faith. Keep me close to you, with your name on my lips and your joy in my heart.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will rediscover the joy of the first Christians by inviting a friend to Mass.

Reflection

Do we know what our mission in life is? Jesus' mission was to glorify his heavenly Father through obedience to His will. In the Gospel, we see Jesus who has finished his mission on earth and about to return to his Father in heaven.

Jesus' strength comes from the Father. We who aspire to become disciples of Jesus must pray for strength from the Holy Spirit. As his disciples, we are consecrated in God's truth and holiness. To "consecrate" means "to be made holy or to set apart for God". It also means to be equipped with the qualities of mind, heart and character for a task or service. Just as Jesus was called by the Father to serve in holiness and truth, so we too, are called and equipped for the task of serving God in the world as his representatives. God's truth frees us from ignorance and the deception of sin. It also reveals to us God's goodness, love, and wisdom. Is our life consecrated to God?

May the Lord, take our lives and make it wholly pleasing to him. May He sanctify us in His truth and may the Holy Spirit guide us that we may follow Him faithfully wherever He may lead us.

REFLECTION
Today's Gospel begins with the prayer Jesus says to his Father for all those who would be his followers. Jesus prays this prayer on the night before he is to die. He has no regrets. He knows he has done the work his Father gave him to do: to make his Father known among the people of his day.

Paul in the first reading also looks back over his life. He is about to set off from Ephesus for Jerusalem, where he knows will be the beginning of the end for him. He harbors no regrets about this life. He has made use of all the opportunities God had given to him to make the name of Jesus known among the Gentiles. He has fulfilled the mission given him by the Lord.

The difference between Jesus and Paul is perhaps the difference between the saints and the rest of us. We miss the opportunities the Lord gives us by always living in the future. "Tomorrow I will get down to doing something about my spiritual life." "Tomorrow I will reconcile with those who have hurt me." "Tomorrow I will start giving more time to my family."

As we get older, most of us discover and recall lost opportunities. The one consolation we have is that it was the Lord Jesus who said, excusing the weariness of his apostles, "The spirit is willing, the flesh is weak." But will it not be unfortunate if we will have to go empty-handed into the presence of so loving and understanding a Lord?

Opening Prayer:

Lord, open my ears and help me hear and understand your words to your disciples. Help me listen to your voice today and be open to what you are asking of me.

Encountering Christ:

·         Communion of Persons: Jesus prayed out loud to his Father, and he gave us a glimpse into the depth of his Father-Son relationship. Jesus, God made flesh, walked on earth, but his heart was never far from his Father in heaven. They were continually united, heart-to-heart and Person-to-Person. Jesus asked his Father to “give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you,” and the Son was glorified at the Resurrection. When the disciples received the Holy Spirit (John 20:22), that outpouring of love that existed between the Father and the Son appeared as flames above the heads of the disciples. The communion of person is not only a lofty Trinitarian reality but also one we are called to make manifest in the world. “Man and woman, created as a ‘unity of the two’ in their common humanity, are called to live in a communion of love, and in this way to mirror in the world the communion of love that is in God, through which the Three Persons love each other in the intimate mystery of the one divine life” (Mulieris Dignitatem 7). Marriage and family life are a reflection of the life of the Trinity, and the everyday opportunities that present themselves to do something small for a spouse, son or daughter, or an aging parent are signs of that communion of love.

·         Jesus Conquered the World: Since the fall, human relationships have often been a point of contradiction and division. The “world” that Jesus referred to in the Gospel is not the world God created in the beginning, but the fallen natural world that is subject to concupiscence. The unity that men and women were called to is constantly at risk due to self-seeking and pride. “In the ‘unity of the two.’ man and woman are called from the beginning not only to exist ‘side by side’ or ‘together,’ but they are also called to exist mutually ‘one for the other’” (Mulieris Dignitatem 7). The mutual subjection of one to the other out of love for Christ is difficult because we often prefer domination and competition. Christ’s followers are called to live in Christian unity, and not give in to the worldly desire to manipulate one another. We are able to live Christian unity when we rely on the grace of God.

·         That They May Be One: The first of the four marks of the Church is that she is “One.” But this “oneness” is found in the unity of “the Trinity of Persons…because of her founder …because of her ‘soul’: ‘It is the Holy Spirit, dwelling in those who believe and pervading and ruling over the entire Church, who brings about that wonderful communion of the faithful and joins them together so intimately in Christ that he is the principle of the Church's unity’" (CCC 813). This communion of persons becomes the reflection of the Trinitarian relationship of God, for “man becomes the image of God not so much in the moment of solitude as in the moment of communion” (General Audience, November 14, 1979, St. John Paul II).

Conversing with Christ: Jesus, I want to discover the unity of your life in the life of my family and my parish community. Give me a sensitivity to your voice alive in the Scriptures and in the community of persons you have put around me. I know you are speaking to me in your word and in my life.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will listen to your invitation through the word to reconcile with someone I have been meaning to reach out to with a phone call or email.

REFLECTION Epriest daily

1. A Legacy of Prayer: The supreme hour of Jesus has come. As he anticipates his agony of self-giving love to the extreme, Christ has no thought for himself. His heart turns to its one and only love, the one for whose glory he has carried out every act of his earthly existence: his Father. But at the same time, that invincible love for his Father embraces all those whom the Father has entrusted to him. Christ leaves his followers a legacy that will remain their greatest source of confidence throughout the ages: his priestly prayer. In this, Christ teaches us how to pray. Christ prays first that his Father may be glorified by glorifying the Son. What is the supreme glory with which the life of the only Son of God will culminate? The answer is in his bloody immolation upon the cross.

2. The Cross is True Glory: “The word ‘glory’ refers to the splendor, honor and power which belong to God” (The Navarre Bible: St. John, pg. 202). How can Christ’s humiliating death on the cross and his abandonment by his closest followers give honor to God and reveal his splendor and power? How can the cross be Christ’s supreme glory? First, it reveals a love without limits, a love that does not say, “I will go this far and no farther.” Christ’s words, “Father, forgive them,” bear witness to a love that is stronger than sin. The Resurrection, which follows the cross, testifies to a love that is stronger than death itself. Second, the cross is the fulfillment of Christ’s mission. His obedience to the Father, even to death, redeems all of mankind. Have I embraced the cross in my own life as the one way to follow Christ? Embracing the cross is the only sure path to love Christ and glorify the Father.

3. Jesus Continues to Trust in Me: Throughout this Gospel passage, Christ’s words ring with unshakeable confidence. Even though he will die, abandoned by his disciples, in agony and humiliating failure, Christ continues to trust. He trusts both in his Father and in those very disciples who will soon desert him. Our Lord’s trust in us as his followers must inspire within us similar unwavering confidence in our mission to save souls, to bring others to Christ, and to transform society itself. By ourselves, we can achieve nothing. But we have the assurance of Christ’s prayers and the promise of his Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will speak in the hearts of all those who Christ calls to bring closer to him. Let us pray often to our great advocate: “Holy Spirit, inspire in me what I should think, what I should say, and what I should leave unsaid, so that I may achieve the good of all my brothers and sisters, fulfill my mission, and make Christ’s kingdom triumph.”

Reflection SG.

Jesus has finished speaking to his disciples with words full of encouragement great promises. Now he enters into his passion by praying for his disciples and for all of us who have come to believe in him. There is a nice suggestion that this solemn prayer to his Father is like the Preface of the Mass. With the Preface, we turn to prayer as we enter into the consecration. So, too, after his final teaching, Jesus enters into prayer, which he will continue in a different way in the Garden of Olives as he offers himself to the Father.

`In his prayer, Jesus makes an extraordinary statement referring to his disciples: “It is in them that I have been glorified.”  Judas has already gone out to betray him and in a short while Peter will deny him and all of them except John will desert him at the end. We may well then wonder how Jesus finds that he is glorified in them. Possibly, Jesus is taking all of history, past present and future into his prayer and so into his sacrifice.

After the Resurrection and Pentecost and through the ages many will glorify God by a holy life or a martyr’s death.

Courage! I have overcome the world

Today, we may have the feeling that the world of faith in Christ is weakening. Many are symptoms against the fortitude and courage we would like to receive from a life integrally based on the Gospel. Consumerism, capitalism, sensualism and materialism values are very much in fashion and against any representation that may be in tune with the evangelical demands. Nevertheless, this combination of values and life ways do not provide either our own personal plenitude or our peace; in fact, it rather brings an intimate feeling of discomfort and uneasiness. Could not it be because of this circumstance that, today, we see lots of people in public sulking, lost in though and worrying about a rather obscure future, most probably because they have pledged it against the cost of a car, a flat or some holidays they simply cannot afford?  Jesus' words inspire confidence: «Courage! I have overcome the world» (Jn 16:33), that is, through his Passion, Death and Resurrection, He has attained the eternal life, life with nothing to stop it, a limitless life because it has overcome all limits and all difficulties.

We, soldiers of Christ, can overcome these difficulties too, as He did, in spite of the fact we may have to go throughout our life through many deaths and resurrections, never wanted but certainly assumed by the very Paschal Mystery of Christ. For “deaths” indeed are, losing a friend, parting with a beloved person, the failure of a project or the limitations our own human weakness impose upon us…

But «in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us» (Rm 8:37). Let us be witnesses to God's love, because He has, with us, «done great things» (Lk 1:49) and has given us his help to overcome all difficulties, even death, because Christ is sending us the Holy Spirit.

Opening Prayer:

Lord, I am searching for you and I want to follow you. I know you are here with me in this time of prayer. I want to be filled by your presence. Give me the courage to follow you more closely.

Encountering Christ:

·         Just Tell Me What to Do: Do you wonder if the disciples grew tired of trying to interpret Jesus’s parables to understand what he meant? He had just finished telling them that he came from the Father and will be returning to the Father. The disciples must have thought, “Suddenly everything is clear! Or is it?” Just like the disciples we are never going to completely understand everything before we feel called to do it. By our faith we show that we are willing to follow Jesus. We don’t read the signs and follow the directions. We are often called to follow him without seeing the whole picture. Jesus asked, “Do you believe now?” because he knew the disciples’ faith would be tested during the dark time to come: Jesus’s Passion. He asks us the same question, “Do you believe?”

·         Scattered and Alone: The “hour” of Jesus’s Passion was approaching, and Jesus foretold that his disciples would fall short in the measure of their friendship with him. His agony in the Garden of Gethsemane would test their loyalty, and their love. They fell asleep “from grief” (Luke 22:45) and then scattered when the High Priest’s soldiers came to arrest Jesus with the temple guards. One disciple ran off without clothes (Mark 14:52), Peter struck the High Priest’s servant’s ear (John 18:10), Judas betrayed Jesus with an embrace (Luke 22:48). Are we surprised at the weakness of the disciples’ ability to stay awake and pray with Jesus, to stand beside him during this most difficult time? We fail in similar ways when we neglect our night prayers because we’re too tired; struggle to stay awake for an hour of adoration when it is so quiet and warm in the chapel; or shorten our visit to Jesus in the Tabernacle, pressed for time—and Jesus loves us anyway! "Jesus is not an idea or a feeling or a memory. Jesus is a living ‘person’ always present among us. Love Jesus present in the Eucharist" (St. John Paul the Great).

·         Conquered the World: By his death and Resurrection, Jesus conquered sin and death. He has already won the battle for our souls. This should give us great peace. Our failures to love Jesus shouldn’t dismay us. We know that Jesus is there to pick us up and brush off our scrapes and bruises. When we acknowledge our weaknesses, we have an opportunity to ask for the gift of fortitude. Fortitude “strengthens the resolve to resist temptations and to overcome obstacles in the moral life. The virtue of fortitude enables one to conquer fear, even fear of death, and to face trials and persecutions” (CCC 1808).

Conversing with Christ: Jesus, sometimes I am discouraged by my failure to stay faithful to my prayer life. Help me to run to you, rather than give in to these feelings. I can count on you to help me if I ask for the grace of fortitude. Please give me the grace of a courageous heart.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace  I will turn over to you an area of my life that I have been struggling with on my own. Jesus, help me to overcome the temptation to give up by your gift of fortitude. Strengthen me.

Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, we rejoice in your Ascension! You are the king of glory and the king of my life. You show me that there is meaning in our suffering. You have gone before us to give us peace and hope in this life. Help me to be a witness of this peace and hope to others.

Encountering Christ:

·         The Glory of God: Christ's Ascension marks the definitive entrance of Jesus's humanity into God's heavenly domain. Jesus Christ, the head of the Church, precedes us into the Father's glorious kingdom so that we, the members of his body, may live in the hope of one day being with him forever (Catechism of the Catholic Church 665 and 666). For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face (1 Corinthians 13:12). Every time we receive the Eucharist, we receive a “taste of heaven,” which by God’s grace can deepen our faith and our holy anticipation of eternity.

·         Fidelity to His Will: Pope Francis said that “entering the glory of God demands daily fidelity to his will, even when it demands sacrifice and sometimes requires us to change our plans.” It is known that Jesus’s ascension happened on the Mount of Olives where he had prayed to the Father before the Passion. It was Our Lord’s love of his Father that enabled him to endure suffering and death, and then return to the place of encounter to be raised into heaven. Through our relationship with the Father, we also receive the grace to be faithful to God’s will, and may we one day reap the benefits—eternity with him. With Jesus, we say, “Not my will but yours be done” (Luke 22:42).

·         Never Alone: Pope Francis adds,“The Ascension does not point to Jesus’s absence, but tells us that he is alive in our midst in a new way. He is now...present in every space and time, close to each one of us. In our life we are never alone: we have this Advocate who awaits us, who defends us.” Before Jesus died on the cross, he promised that he would send the Holy Spirit to be with his people to accompany them. It is through this gentle Spirit that we perceive the presence of God and receive comfort, consolation, and wisdom to prepare us for our eternal destiny.

Conversing with Christ: Dear Jesus, thank you for always being with me. Without the power of your Spirit in my life, I can do nothing. While I am still here on earth, help me to conform my will to your Father’s will. Help me endure hardships with love for you. Let the thought of heaven with you console my heart deeply.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will offer up a prayer for a friend or family member who has been feeling hopeless.

Reflection

It is normal to think that, at his Ascension into heaven, Jesus left us. It is true that Jesus left this world but that does not mean that he left us. At the feast of the Ascension each year we have a good opportunity to reflect on Jesus' relationship with us, his enduring presence among us and within us.

When Jesus rose from the dead, he spent forty days appearing to his disciples, those who knew him before his death and believed in him and loved him. The purpose of these appearances was to bring them to understand that though he had died he was alive in a new way and still cherished his relationship with them, though it was now expressed in a new way. His ascension into heaven was part of this series of appearances, the last one and the one which would establish his relationship, not only with those who had seen him in his earthly life but all those throughout the ages who would come to believe in him in the Church. Born to be Immanuel, he would be Immanuel, God-with-us, forever.

Lord Jesus, present with us in all ages, bring us joyfully to eternal life with You in the Father’s presence forever and ever.

Scripture: John 17:11b-19

7th Sunday of Easter (B)

People talk a lot about loving God. Sometimes these same people fall short in the way they treat other people. John insists that we cannot have one without the other. We have never seen God. We understand very little about God. Yet we have each other — and we are all created in the image and likeness of God and God dwells in us. Other people become the ‘representatives’ of God — we love and serve them and in so doing love and serve our God. We have so many opportunities each day!

Jesus knew that those he left behind would have a rough time. His prayer to the Father was that they be protected in his name — another way of saying his love and grace. Those who really do walk in the ways of Jesus do not belong to the world. They live and work here but the light that guides their path is very different from the ways of the world. And the world will not love them for it! Jesus prayed that his followers may be one just as he and the Father are one.

In other words, Jesus wants us to experience God and to experience others as he does — in unity, love, and harmony. This all sounds like a bit too much to ask, but we learn each day step by step. Let us listen to the gentle voice of the spirit within us rather than the noise around us. Lord, help me to love others

Opening Prayer:

Lord, I turn to you as you turned to the Father. Protect me and guard me. Help me to be open to your word in Scripture and in my everyday life. Grant me your grace so I can turn to you to seek truth, rather than the empty promises of the world.

Encountering Christ:

·         Keep Them in Your Name: Jesus invited his disciples to a new Passover where he instituted the Eucharist and the priesthood. In the Gospel of John, the Last Supper was celebrated on the night before the celebration of the Jewish Passover, marking this meal as a New Covenant in Jesus’s Body and Blood. At the first Mass, where the matzo and wine were transformed into his flesh and blood, Jesus also installed his disciples as his first priests. They were to begin their mission after Jesus went to the Father. He “protected” and “guarded” them as his chosen brethren. Jesus is the High Priest, and the one “who prays for us is also the one who prays in us and the God who hears our prayer” (CCC 2749). When Christ instituted the priesthood at the Last Supper, “Jesus [also] became the guarantee of an [even] better covenant. Those priests were many because they were prevented by death from remaining in office, but he, because he remains forever, has a priesthood that does not pass away” (Hebrews 7:22-24).

·         I Sent Them Into the World: The disciples would not have an easy path as the first priests of the New Covenant. Called to imitate Christ, the disciples would need an infusion of divine grace, and Jesus prayed to the Father to ask for protection and fidelity to the “word” of God. Jesus is the Word incarnate, the divine revelation handed to the early Church. The disciples saw his human nature; they knew he laughed, had splinters, sleepless nights, and long days. But what was revealed to them at the Last Supper was his relationship with the Father, his heart-to-heart Father-Son filiation, his deep and anxious care for his disciples, and his desire for them to share in the communion of love available to each soul who desires to love God with his whole heart.

·         Consecrated in Truth: Christ prayed that the priests of the New Covenant be consecrated in truth, set apart for a holy purpose. Just as the bread and wine are consecrated in the Eucharistic prayer at Mass, so the priest himself is transformed during ordination to become alter Christus, another Christ. “As an alter Christus, the priest is profoundly united to the Word of the Father who, in becoming incarnate, took the form of a servant… Because he belongs to Christ, the priest is radically at the service of all people: he is the minister of their salvation, their happiness and their authentic liberation, developing, in this gradual assumption of Christ's will, in prayer, in ‘being heart to heart’ with him” (Benedict XVI, June 24, 2009). Rather than being elevated by priestly consecration, ordination defines priests as the servants of all, and at the service of the Church. The hands of the priest are anointed with chrism oil by the bishop as he prays, “That whatever they bless may be blessed, and whatever they consecrate may be consecrated in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” The hands of the priest will consecrate bread and wine, anoint, baptize, and absolve, carrying on the action of Christ in the world.

Conversing with Christ: Jesus, you are the Lord of my heart. You have called me to serve others out of love for you. Help me to discover this call to service more deeply in myself, so that, in imitating you, I may grow in my love of God the Father.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will perform some act of service out of love for you.
