Suy Niệm Tin Mừng thứ Tu -Ngày thứ 7 Tuần Bát Nhật Giáng Sinh (31/12)
Trong khi chúng ta đang sống với ngày cuối cùng của một năm, chúng ta cần nên nghe lại Tin Mừng của John nới về sự hiện diện của Chúa Giêsu. Chúa Giêsu chính là Lời của Thiên Chúa đã mang ánh sáng vào bóng tối của thế giới chúng ta. Chúng ta đã và đang thấy những bóng tối trong những ngày chúng ta đang sống đây và chúng ta có thể lo sợ rằng những bóng tối này sẽ càng ngày càng lan rộng lớn to hơn trước. Nhưng Lời Chúa là "một ánh sáng tỏa sáng trong bóng tối, một ánh sáng mà bóng tối không thể chế ngự được".
            Bài đọc thứ Nhất hôm nay Thánh Gioan nhắc nhở người Do Thái và chúng ta "những người phản Chúa Kitô đã xuất hiện." Đây chính là tất cả các hành động của sự tham lam, lạm quyền, tham nhũng, ghen tương và tất cả những hành động của sự bất công và bóc lột người khác.
            Những hành động này không những chỉ là mối đe dọa cho xã hội, nhưng chúng còn luôn ở bên chúng ta và đang làm “ô nhiễm” cuộc sống tâm linh mỗi người chúng ta. Nhưng, nhờ qua phép rửa mà chúng ta đã được kết hợp với Chúa Kitô, qua Chúa Kitô, chúng ta đã được ưu đãi bằng ân sủng trong Chúa Thánh Thần.  Qua Phép Rửa, chúng ta  cũng như Thánh Gioan Tẩy Giả đã được mời gọi để làm chứng nhân cho  Sự Sáng và đem niềm hy vọng và lòng tự tin đến với những người đang sống trong bóng tối và sự sợ hãi. Cũng giống như Thánh Gioan đã nói với chúng ta là: tình yêu thật sự sẽ xua tan tất cả những sự sợ hãi của chúng ta.
            Lạy Chúa Cha Toàn năng, xin  giúp chúng con được chia sẻ hoàn toàn  cuộc sống của của chúng con trong Chúa Giêsu, Chúa của chúng con, vì nhờ Ngài, đã đem ơn cứu độ của Ngài đến cho chúng con.

As we come to the end of another year, we need to hear John's message about Jesus the Word bringing light into the darkness of our world. We have seen much darkness in recent days and we fear that there may be even greater darkness ahead. But the Word is “a light that shines in the dark, a light that darkness cannot overpower”. As the first reading reminds us “several antichrists have already appeared.” These are all the agents of greed and corruption, agents of injustice and exploitation.
            These are not just faraway threats. They have always been with us and each one of us is tainted with them. But, through our baptism and our incorporation into Christ, we have been endowed with the grace and truth that come to us through Him. We are called, like John the Baptist, to be witnesses of light bringing hope and confidence among those who live in fear and darkness. As John tells us elsewhere, true love casts out all our fear.  Father, help us to share fully in the life of Jesus our Lord, for through Him, comes the salvation that all are searching for.

Ba trăm sáu mươi sáu ngày hay 365 trong một năm, Chúa Giêsu đã luôn hiến dâng chính mình Ngài cho chúng ta trong Bí Tích Thánh Thể. Lời đã hóa thành nhục thể và Ngài đã tự mình hiến dâng chính mình lên Thiên Chúa Cha để làm của Lễ Hy Sinh trong sự yêu thương. Ngài đã sẵn sàng hiến dâng chính Ngài cho chúng ta nếu như chúng ta muốn Ngài. Đối với chúng ta, là những người con riêng của Ngài, Ngài đã đến.
            Trong ngày cuối cùng của một năm, chúng ta hãy quét dọn tẩy rửa tâm hồn  và lấy đi tất cả những  rác rới trong linh hồn đã thải ra trong  cả một năm. Chúng ta hãy hoàn tất những việc làm dang dở của chúng ta. Chúng ta hãy ăn năn và xưng ra tất cả những tội lỗi của chúng ta để làm hoà với Thiên Chúa. Và chúng ta cũng hãy tha thứ và hòa giải với tất cả những ai đã phạm lỗi và phản nghịch lại chúng ta. Chúng ta hãy đáp lại những lời mọi gọi của Thiên Chúa. Chúng ta không nên đợi cho đến năm tới để xin nhận những ân sủng của năm nay.
            Chúng ta không nên để những hành trang  (tham vọng, tội lỗi) trong những năm vừa qua làm khó khăn hơn cho chúng ta để đáp ứng những thử thách của những năm kế tiếp. Khi Chúa Giêsu chịu chết trên Thập Giá, Ngài nói: "Mọi sự đã hoàn tất." Chúa Giêsu đã vinh danh Chúa Cha bằng cách hoàn thành các công việc mà Chúa Cha đã trao phó cho Ngài làm. Thánh Phaolô cũng đã cầu nguyện: "Nhưng mạng sống tôi, tôi kể như không đáng nói tới, miễn sao tôi hoàn tất vận nghiệp của tôi, và công việc phục vụ tôi đã lĩnh nơi Chúa Giêsu, đoan chứng giảng Tin Mừng về ân sủng của Thiên Chúa.” (Act 20:24).
            Chúa hoàn tất những gì Ngài đã bắt đầu cho chúng ta. Chúng ta hãy để Ngài kết thúc năm nay với sự bình an của Ngài đang ngự trị trong trái tim của chúng ta.
            "Lạy Thiên Chúa Toàn Năng, là Cha của sự sáng, Ngôi Lời vĩnh cửu của Chúa đã nhảy xuống từ Trời trong sự im lặng của màn đêm. Xin Chúa hãy mở rộng tâm hồn và trái tim của chúng con, để chúng con có thể nhận ra được cuộc sống của Ngài và mở mắt của chúng con cho thấy rõi sự sáng chói của bình minh, để cuộc sống của chúng con được tràn đầy vinh quang và hòa bình của Chúa. "
 
REFLECTION
Three hundred and sixty-six days this year, Jesus offered himself to us in the Eucharist. The Word became flesh and he made himself lovingly available in case we wanted him. To us, who are "His own, He came."
On this last day of the year, let us take out all the garbage of all the years. Let us finish any unfinished business. Let us repent and confess all our sins. Let us forgive all who have sinned against us. Let us be reconciled with those who have something against us. Let us answer every calling from God. Let us not wait till next year to accept the graces of this year.
            We don't want the baggage of past years to make it more difficult for us to meet the challenges of next year. When Jesus died, He said: "It is finished." Jesus gave glory to the Father by finishing the work the Father gave him to do. Paul prayed: "I put no value on my life if only I can finish my race and complete the service to which I have been assigned by the Lord Jesus." The Lord finishes what He starts. Let Him finish up the year today with His peace reigning in our hearts.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only-begotten Son, full of grace and truth. John 1:1; 14

The Prologue to John’s Gospel, John 1:1-18, is one of the most profound and theologically rich passages in Scripture. It is both contemplative and mysterious, inviting us to come to know God in His essence through the depth of contemplative prayer.

The opening words, “In the beginning…,” echo the Book of Genesis, revealing the eternal and preexistent nature of the Son of God. Saint John the Evangelist, through a special grace of infused contemplative knowledge, understood that Jesus was the Word, eternally spoken by the Father, and co-existing with Him for all eternity. He recognized that the Word took on human nature, becoming flesh and dwelling among us.

Consider the thoughts of Saint John as he wrote these words for the first time. He had spent about three years with the Eternal Word made flesh—walking with Him, listening to His teachings, and witnessing His miracles, His rejection, His suffering, His death, and His Resurrection. He stood with the others as Jesus ascended into Heaven and experienced the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

After Pentecost, John’s understanding of Jesus deepened. Through prayer and the celebration of the Eucharist, John discovered his Lord in an even more intimate and transformative way. The Eternal Word, though no longer walking the earth, was now present within him by grace. This abiding presence became more real to him than ever before.

Like John, we are called to know the Eternal Word as He continues to dwell among us through the Sacraments, in prayer, in the Scriptures, and within our souls. We are invited to be transformed by His presence so that we may become His living members within the Church.

This deep union with Christ is only possible when we allow ourselves to be drawn into the mysteries of the Incarnation and redemption. While our minds can grasp these mysteries to a certain extent, true understanding comes through infused contemplative knowledge, a gift of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us.

Reflect today on Saint John the Evangelist as he wrote his Prologue. Consider the gift of contemplative understanding he received, the transformation that occurred within his soul, and the intimacy he shared with God. Each of us is called to this same life of interior union and contemplation. Let this beautiful and mysterious Prologue draw you deeper into prayer and into the mystery of the Word made flesh.

My Eternal Word of God, You existed before time began, in perfect union with the Father and the Holy Spirit. During this octave of Christmas, we reflect on Your Incarnation, Your becoming flesh to dwell among us and within us by grace. Please reveal to me this great mystery so that I may believe with the same faith as Saint John, Your beloved disciple. Jesus, I trust in You.

 

January 1, Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God

The shepherds went in haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about this child. All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds. And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. Luke 2:16–19 

At the birth of Christ, the Blessed Mother’s Immaculate Heart was full of love and grace, so full that it overflowed in superabundance. Her human heart could not contain all that consumed it. Seeing her Child, having Saint Joseph near, and being accompanied by God’s creatures within that sacred cave near Bethlehem was all that she needed for her complete fulfillment. But God gave her even more.

As that holy night unfolded, an angel of the Lord appeared to the poor shepherds tending their flocks in the fields. The angel announced “good news of great joy that will be for all the people” (Luke 2:10). The angel went on to declare, “Today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:11–12). Then, a multitude of heavenly hosts appeared, glorifying God with their song of praise.

Such an experience compelled these lowly shepherds to immediately seek out this newborn Messiah. When they found Him, they revealed to our Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph what the angel had said to them, and “Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart” (Luke 2:19). It is this Immaculate Heart and the motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary that we celebrate today.

Because Mary’s Immaculate Heart was overflowing with love and grace, these humble shepherds gave her the opportunity to share that love and grace. While they blessed her and Saint Joseph by their presence and adoration, she blessed them even more by being an instrument and mediatrix of God’s love through her newborn Son.

Mary was not only the mother of the flesh of her Son, but the mother of the Person Who is the Son of God. For this reason, the Church, in Her wisdom, has ascribed to her the title, “Mother of God.” Jesus was her Son, and Jesus is God. Therefore, she is rightly honored as the Mother of God.

As the Mother of God, Mary’s Immaculate Heart continues to overflow with love and grace. Just as she did with the shepherds on that first Christmas night, her heart continues to pour forth all that it contains upon us, her spiritual sons and daughters. The extent to which we are members of Christ’s Body, the Church, is the extent to which the Blessed Mother’s motherhood is active in our lives, just as it was in the life of her Son and as it touched the lives of the shepherds.

Reflect today on this glorious title given to Jesus’ mother—the Mother of God. As you do, ponder the role she plays in your life and in the life of the entire Church. By giving birth to the Messiah, the Son of God, she gave birth to the Church, becoming mother and mediatrix to us all. Seek her intercession, mediation, and motherhood, knowing that doing so not only honors her Son, but also cooperates with His divine plan of salvation.

Most glorious Mother of God, your Immaculate Heart is overflowing with love and the fullness of grace. Your love for all of God’s children compels you to share that grace with all who come to you and your divine Son. Please count me among your children and lavish upon me all that is contained in your pondering heart of pure love and grace. Mother of God, pray for us. Jesus, I trust in You.
