Này, ngươi sẽ thụ thai trong lòng và sinh một con trai, và ngươi sẽ đặt tên cho Người là Giê-su. Suy ngẫm: Chỉ có một người mẹ mới có thể bắt đầu hiểu được sự mầu nhiệm và vẻ đẹp tuyệt vời của tình mẫu tử. Nhưng chỉ có một người mẹ mới có thể bắt đầu hiểu được vẻ đẹp vô cùng sâu sắc của việc làm mẹ của Con Thiên Chúa. Sau khi Chúa Giê-su ra đời, các mục đồng đến thờ lạy Con trẻ và kể lại rằng một đám đông thiên binh đã hiện ra với họ, tiết lộ rằng Con của Đức Maria chính là Đấng Mê-si-a. Khi nghe những lời đó, Đức Maria suy ngẫm, chiêm nghiệm và giữ chúng trong lòng. Đây chỉ là lần đầu tiên chúng ta được biết về tấm lòng suy ngẫm của Đức Maria sau khi Con trai bà ra đời, nhưng chúng ta có thể chắc chắn rằng bà đã suy ngẫm về Người hết lần này đến lần khác, càng ngày càng đi sâu hơn vào mầu nhiệm tình mẫu tử của mình đối với Con Thiên Chúa.
Đức Mẹ được ban cho danh hiệu độc nhất vô nhị là “Mẹ Thiên Chúa” trước hết và trên hết để bày tỏ đức tin của chúng ta vào thần tính của Chúa Giê-su. Chúa Giê-su vừa là người vừa là Thiên Chúa, nhưng trong Người, hai bản tính này được kết hợp hoàn hảo. Do đó, không thể nói rằng Đức Maria chỉ là mẹ của nhân tính của Chúa Giê-su, bà là mẹ của Ngôi Vị. Và Ngôi Vị đó, đồng thời, vừa là Thiên Chúa vừa là con người.
Hãy nhớ rằng, khi Chúa Giê-su bắt đầu sứ vụ công khai và giảng dạy, có một người phụ nữ trong đám đông đã kêu lên: “Phúc cho lòng đã cưu mang Người và vú đã cho Người bú.” Chúa Giê-su đã sửa lại lời bà bằng cách nói: “Trái lại, phúc cho những ai nghe lời Thiên Chúa và tuân giữ lời đó” (Lu-ca 11:27). behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. ~Luke 1:31–33
: Only a mother could begin to understand the great mystery and beauty of motherhood. But only one mother could begin to understand the unfathomable beauty of being the mother of the Son of God. After the birth of Jesus, the shepherds came to adore her Child and recounted how a multitude of heavenly hosts appeared to them, revealing that Mary’s Child was the Messiah. As Mary heard those words, she pondered them, reflected upon them, and kept them in her heart. This was but the first time we are told of Mary’s pondering heart after the birth of her Son, but we can be certain that she pondered Him over and over, entering ever more deeply into the mystery of her motherhood of the Son of God.
As the Mother of God, Mary’s prayerful pondering was beyond our comprehension. The bond she shared with her divine Son far surpassed a mere human bond. Jesus was not only her Son, He was also her Savior. Therefore, she adored Him as a mother loves her child, but also as a servant worships her God. The relationship between this unique mother and Son is infinitely awe-inspiring.
Our Blessed Mother is given the unique title of “Mother of God” first and foremost to express our faith in the divinity of Jesus. Jesus was both human and divine, but in Him these two natures were perfectly united. Therefore, one cannot say that Mary was only the mother of the humanity of Jesus, she was the mother of the Person. And that one Person was, at the same time, God and man.
Recall that once Jesus began His public ministry and was teaching, there was a woman in the crowd who cried out, “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.” Jesus corrected her by saying, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it” (Luke 11:27). At first read, one could conclude that Jesus was downplaying the role of His own mother, but He was actually doing the opposite. Jesus was actually highlighting the most unifying aspect of His relationship with His mother. Mary was not His mother only in a biological sense. She wasn’t blessed only because she bore Him in her womb. Rather, her deepest union with her divine Son came from her spiritual union with His will and that of the Father in Heaven. She said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). She heard the word of God and observed it perfectly. She did that at the Annunciation, she continued to do so as she raised her Child, and she did it most perfectly as she stood before the Cross, offering her dying Son to the Father for the salvation of the world. Mary’s motherhood was one that encompassed her whole being. It was one that united her to her Son in ways we will never fully comprehend.
Mary is the Mother of God and, therefore, is the mother of all of God’s children, including you. Honor and love your heavenly mother today and rejoice as you reflect upon this glorious queen and holy mother. As we celebrate this greatest saint in the history of the world, ponder the ponderer. Ponder her love for her Son. Ponder her obedience to His divine will. Ponder Him as her Savior. Ponder every human and divine aspect of their loving relationship.
Prayer: Most holy Mother of God, you were blessed beyond all people, graced beyond what I will ever comprehend. Thank you for your “Yes” to God in all things. Thank you for your pure and holy love for your Son, for your motherly heart, your motherly pondering, and your motherly care for all your children. Pray for me that I may become more like your Son so as to merit you as my mother and queen. Mother of God, pray for us. Jesus, I trust in You.
The shepherds went in haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about this child. All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds. And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. Luke 2:16–19
As that holy night unfolded, an angel of the Lord appeared to the poor shepherds tending their flocks in the fields. The angel announced “good news of great joy that will be for all the people” (Luke 2:10). The angel went on to declare, “Today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:11–12). Then, a multitude of heavenly hosts appeared, glorifying God with their song of praise.
Mary was not only the mother of the flesh of her Son, but the mother of the Person Who is the Son of God. For this reason, the Church, in Her wisdom, has ascribed to her the title, “Mother of God.” Jesus was her Son, and Jesus is God. Therefore, she is rightly honored as the Mother of God.
As the Mother of God, Mary’s Immaculate Heart continues to overflow with love and grace. Just as she did with the shepherds on that first Christmas night, her heart continues to pour forth all that it contains upon us, her spiritual sons and daughters. The extent to which we are members of Christ’s Body, the Church, is the extent to which the Blessed Mother’s motherhood is active in our lives, just as it was in the life of her Son and as it touched the lives of the shepherds.
Reflect today on this glorious title given to Jesus’ mother—the Mother of God. As you do, ponder the role she plays in your life and in the life of the entire Church. By giving birth to the Messiah, the Son of God, she gave birth to the Church, becoming mother and mediatrix to us all. Seek her intercession, mediation, and motherhood, knowing that doing so not only honors her Son, but also cooperates with His divine plan of salvation.
Most glorious Mother of God, your Immaculate Heart is overflowing with love and the fullness of grace. Your love for all of God’s children compels you to share that grace with all who come to you and your divine Son. Please count me among your children and lavish upon me all that is contained in your pondering heart of pure love and grace. Mother of God, pray for us. Jesus, I trust in You.
Hôm nay chúng ta Mừng lễ Mẹ là mẹ Thiên Chúa, Khi tưởng nhớ đến Đức Maria là chúng ta ghi nhớ đến những hồng ân của Thiên Chúa , Vì Thiên Chúa đã làm biết bao việc kỳ diệu tuyệt vời cho những con người thấp hèn, khiêm tốn, với tấm lòng đơn sơ. Vậy hôm nay chúng ta mừng lễ Đức Mẹ là Mẹ Thiên Chúa. Chúng ta cần phải tự hỏi: Làm thế nào mà Đức Maria nhận được một vinh dự như vậy? Trong thư Thánh Phaolô gửi tín hữu Galatians đã hé mở cho chúng ta thấy. Như chúng ta đã được biết, "Thiên Chúa đã sai Con một của Ngài xuống thế gian và được sinh ra bởi một người nữ, theo quy định của luật định thế gian ..." Không có gì đặc biệt về "người nữ." January first used to be celebrated as the Octave Day of Christmas and the
Circumcision and Naming of Jesus. The celebration has been changed to the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God., the principal and most important title and role of the Blessed Virgin Mary. "Mother of God" is the literal translation of Mater Dei in Latin and Theotokos in Greek, the "Bearer of God," which was defined at the Council of Ephesus in 431.
The Gospel reading still celebrates the circumcision and naming of Jesus in accordance with Jewish law and custom: truly God, he was also truly man and subjected himself to all the usual conventions and practices of man, except that he was sinless. Made man through Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus is the redeemer of the world.
Celebrating Jesus and Mary at the beginning of each year, we are reminded to dedicate the whole year to the Lord, realizing that each one of us in our own and specific way is tasked to be a "bearer of God." We are tasked to bring Christ to everyone and to everything in our lives, to our families, friends and work associates, to those who have lost their longing for God, to those who have been alienated from God -that each one of them may find and recognize God's presence in the world.
Through this celebration the Church challenges and encourages us to pray for the Lord's Holy Spirit to enable us to be earnest bearers of goodness, hope and love, bearers of Christ to one another. May Mary, Mother of God and our blessed Mother, who pondered all these mysteries in her heart, inspire and guide us today and throughout the coming year.
1. The Light of Faith: After the Annunciation, the Gospel tells us that the angel departed from Mary (Luke 1:38). The angel had not explained how every detail of Jesus’s birth would happen, how Joseph would finally take her into his home, how they would have to travel to Bethlehem for the census. Like all of us, Mary had to hold on in faith to the promise. She had to trust God although she did not know the specifics. Mary must have been consoled when the shepherds arrived at the manger and shared the story about the angels appearing to them. Their visit was a confirmation that everything was happening according to God’s plan. At times we can feel like our faith gives us just enough light to take the next step. We can be consoled and grateful when Our Lord sends little confirmations to encourage us along the journey.
