Suy Niệm Tin Mừng Thứ Ba Tuần thứ Ba Mùa Thường Nien

Suy Niệm Tin Mừng Thứ Ba Tuần thứ Ba Mùa Thường Niên I

Reflection TUESDAY, 3rd Week in Ordinary Time
In this gospel, Jesus does not talk about the relationships that we have with our family, friends, but instead, He means to emphasize the relationships that are born through people congregating together to praise Him; those who become one and believe in Him. Jesus redefines the meaning of relationships. It is not just in the matter of flesh and blood, but anyone who "…does God's will…". Those people whom we see at Mass, and those who do good and follow the footsteps of Jesus, these are the people whom we should truly call our brothers and sisters.
Many of us in general have a strong bond with their families. This is overtly practiced by having family reunions, celebrating holidays and birthdays together. There is no problem with this relationship, but Jesus calls us to open up our minds, to welcome new relationships in our life with those who have the same Catholic beliefs, and most especially, to renew our relationship with him. Jesus shares a true and perfect relationship with us. Where in the world can we find someone who is as compassionate, understanding, loving and forgiving as God is? He challenges us to be the best that we can be and helps us to see through the darkness. There is always hope. Let us not forget that Jesus our Lord is capable of transforming us to become like him, to be more loving and generous to our fellow brothers and sisters. He invites us to do this together as a community, as a real family. May we continue to seek his guidance in strengthening these special relationships all rooted in our praise and worship of a loving Father.

Opening Prayer:
Lord, help me to pray as a true disciple, as one who prays out of obedience—not obedience forced by a tyrant, but obedience given freely to someone I love in order to please him.
Encountering Christ:
1. Make the Family Proud of You: Throughout the world in Jesus’s time and even in many places still today, the most important relationships were blood relationships. Each person was seen primarily as a member of a group related by blood. They were a member of a particular tribe, clan, or family and were expected to work to benefit that group. Nothing was more important.
2. Cousin Jesus Is Embarrassing Us: Jesus had begun to act in a strange way. Reports about him were getting back to Nazareth, and his family group didn’t know what to make of it. It sounded like he had gone crazy and was doing things that might bring shame upon the family, so they sent out a group to bring him back home and make him stop behaving so strangely. Perhaps they brought Mary along with them because they hoped she would talk some sense into him.
3. Water (of Baptism) Is Thicker Than Blood: Jesus made clear that he was teaching something new—that family ties were no longer the most important relationship a person can have. Instead he replaced them with a stronger bond—the bond of obedience that ties us to God. In doing this, he was rejecting the claim of these “brothers" over him, but not Mary’s, because no one was ever more lovingly obedient to God than she was.
Conversing with Christ: Lord, you give me the opportunity to be your child, not because I am related in any physical way to you, but through my childlike obedience. Children obey because they love their parents and want to please them. Help me to please you through my obedience and become your true child.
Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will try to live obedience to your will in every moment

REFLECTION Monday after 3rd Sunday of Ordinary
For our reflection today, we concentrate on one verse: "Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, never have forgiveness." What exactly is this unforgivable sin against the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit has two functions: to reveal God's truth to people and to enable people to recognize that truth when they see it and hear it. If a person refuses the guidance of the Holy Spirit long enough and often enough, he will in the end become incapable of recognizing the truth when he sees it. He can no longer recognize God's beauty and goodness. He comes to a stage when his own evil seems to him good and when God's good seems to him evil. He so often and consistently disobeys God's will to a point that this sinful behavior becomes a way of life with no qualms or conscience. That was the stage to which the Scribes and Pharisees had come. That is why they could look at Jesus and say that he was Beelzebul, the prince of devils, the all evil one.
Why should a sin against the Holy Spirit be unforgivable? What differentiates it from all other sins? When a person reaches that stage, repentance becomes impossible. There is only one condition of forgiveness and that is penitence. But if a person, by repeated refusing God's guidance, has got his moral values inverted until evil to him is good and good to him is evil, he is conscious of no sin, he cannot repent and therefore he can never be forgiven. So long as a person sees loveliness in Christ, so long as he hates his sin even if he cannot leave it, there is still hope for repentance and forgiveness. It is only when serious sin means nothing at all, when Christ means nothing anymore, that's when a person has shut himself out from the love of God and his kingdom. There is a dreadful warning here. We must listen to God in all our days that our spiritual hearing never becomes spiritual deafness.

Refection the feast of Sts. Timothy Titus
After yesterday’s celebration of Saint Paul’s conversion, we now commemorate his two most important and trusted disciples, Timothy and Titus. We know a lot more about Timothy than about Titus, but what we know about them is what St Paul has to say about them. As with most other saints of the early Church, what we know about them is what is most important for the Church and for us: they were fervent Christians, Apostles of the Gospel and were revered as holy men by those who knew them and thus venerated as saints. As such they are models for all Christians.
Called to be Catholics and disciples of Christ, we know that God’s special grace comes to us along with the calling. The special grace is the grace to live according to the calling, to live as fervently as we can. We are not all called to be Apostles in the same sense that Jesus’ Twelve Apostles or Paul, Timothy and Titus were. Yet our faith is an apostolic faith for Jesus sent his disciples into the world to make disciples of all nations. Let us at least live so as not to be an obstacle to the Gospel. Lord Jesus, grant us the grace to live our faith fervently and responsibly as Your

Reflection Sts. Timothy and Titus, Bishops 2018
God never said it's going to be easy. With all our frailties and weaknesses, He knows that we must be able to conscientiously work towards goodness to be worthy of finding meaning and fulfillment in our lives.
This message is emphasized in St. Paul's letters to Timothy and Titus. His admonition for all is to spread the Good News unabashedly, and with strength, with joy and with conviction. The gospel too further cautions us that the mission is difficult and that many will not be of the same mind.
There are numerous belief systems today as it was then. Perhaps, the better and more effective way to share our blessed faith during this complicated, stressful and conflicted times is to conduct our lives with Christ always in our hearts.
Let us act as Jesus would. Be fair and honest in our dealings. Be full of mercy and compassion to those less fortunate. Treat everyone kindly and respectfully specially those who are subordinate to us. Avoid resentment, hurtful thoughts, words and deeds. Love all as God loves us.

Suy Niệm tin mừng Lễ Thánh Phaolô trở lại. 1/25

January 25: Conversion of St Paul the Apostle

Thursday January 25: Conversion of St Paul the Apostle
The conversion of Saint Paul and its consequences were in many ways the most significant cluster of events affecting the early history of the Church. In his Acts of the Apostles, St Luke is careful not to let Paul’s story completely override his account of Peter's authority and apostolic work.
So too for us. Whatever disputes arose in the early Church between Paul and the Apostles whom Jesus chose during his earthly life “to be with him” (Mk 3:14), we have no reason whatsoever to choose between Peter and Paul. Paul himself condemns such attitudes (1Cor 10-16). Both are key figures in God’s work of salvation. Our loyalty is to Jesus in the Church which he founded on Peter, a Church which, in spite of many weaknesses, has always, in God’s providential care, been served by great saints and teachers. The divisive attitude which St Paul condemns can often arise amongst us. Let us never on any account be guilty of causing divisions in the church community.
Lord, as we celebrate the conversion of Paul, grant us the grace always to remember that we are called to constant conversion, fidelity and perseverance and tolerance in Your Church.

Opening Prayer:
Lord, I am in constant need of conversion. Help me to pray well so that, like St. Paul, I will radiate Christ with my entire life.
Encountering Christ:
1. A Greater Experience Than the Apostles’: Our life is meant to be a proclamation of the Gospel to every living creature. The apostles experienced Jesus in their daily living with him. We experience him too—in our prayer, when we read the inspired words of Scripture, when we practice charity toward the least of my brothers and sisters. We also experience him in the sacraments, especially the Eucharist which is a deeper and more intimate experience than anything the apostles had up until the Last Supper.
2. A Transforming Encounter: This experience of Christ should transform us. We should be different from people who haven’t experienced Christ. How is it possible for someone who has received the living God himself in the Eucharist–even if it was only one time–how is it possible for that person to be unchanged?
3. Serve God, Serve Others: It is a great disgrace that Christians cannot easily be distinguished from non-Christians. Our experience of Christ should make us so different that whenever someone walks into a room, he or she should be able to tell who the Christians are within a few minutes. That doesn’t mean that we have to be talking about Christ all the time. It means that our life should be so transformed by reception of the Eucharist, and our other experiences of Christ, that he shines out in our actions, as he did in the first disciples.
Conversing with Christ: Lord, help me to stop resisting you. There are so many things in my life that compete with you for first place that you cannot show your goodness through me. Help me to see that until I open my heart to you entirely, I cannot be a saint—I cannot be a good person or even a nice person. Let me stop serving myself and dedicate myself to serving you and others.
Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will do something that is uncomfortable for me, something I would rather not do, but something that will allow you to reach those around me.

Third Sunday of Ordinary Time B – The Word of God Sunday
A couple of thousand years ago, a man walked and passed by the Galilee sea. He met a couple of brothers who were casting their nets to catch fishs. He called them and asked them to follow Him, and they left everything, even their own father, their business, their jobs, everything and followed him.
This man was Jesus and a couple of brothers were Peter, Andrew, James and John.
Jesus called them as his first disciples.
Through the Gospel, Jesus called many disciples, and out of those many he chose twelve whom he named his apostles (Luke 6:13). These apostles followed and heard Jesus preaching for three years. After Pentecost, they preached and taught what they had heard from Jesus preaching.
Then the evangelists collected and put all of the preaching from the apostles into writing, which we call the Gospels. So, the Gospels are the preaching of Jesus that was handed down by the apostles, and put into writing by the evangelists.
The Gospels are the Word of God.
The entire Bible is the Word of God.
In 2019 Pope Francis has instituted the Sunday of the Word of God to help us know that God wants to give us “peace of heart, the joy of being forgiven and feeling loved.” Pope Francis asked us to devote this third Sunday of Ordinary time every year to place of the Word of God in our lives (Aperuit illis).
Jesus continues to be present with us in the Eucharist and in His words in the Gospels.
It is a privilege for us to have Jesus present with us always in the tabernacle. Perhaps sometimes we don’t think about the other privilege we have: Jesus is also present with us in His words in Sacred Scripture.
Origen of Alexandria, a famous preacher in the third century said: “You receive the body of the Lord with special care and reverence lest the smallest crumb of the consecrated gift fall to the floor. You should receive the word of God with equal care and reverence lest the smallest word of it fall to the floor and be lost.”
We honor all the Bible as the inspired word of God but we give more honor to the Gospels. A lector can read the first and second reading, but only a deacon or priest may proclaim the Gospel. We sit when Sacred Scripture is read during Mass but we stand when the Gospel is proclaimed to show our greater respect for the Gospel.
In our life also, some parts of the Bible will have more meaning for us than other parts. Try to find those parts of the Bible that are most helpful for us.
When we are sick we go to the doctor and get a prescription to get some drug to heal us. In any kind of problem or sickness turn to Jesus for help. One way to find his help is by reading Sacred Scripture. The words of Jesus in the Gospels refresh and restore us. The words of Jesus in the Gospels bring us healing.
There are attitudes in the world today that are not healthy. Reading Sacred Scripture fills our mind with good thoughts to heal the negativity of the world. There are lots of images of violence in the media these days, but in the Bible, we read the words of Jesus, “love your enemies” (Mt 5:44).
Today TV, newspapers and internet do not reflect who we really are as sons and daughters of God, deeply loved by God and destined to spend eternity with God. Reading Sacred Scripture reminds us of who we really are: sons and daughters of God.
There is a beautiful passage Jesus tells us in Matthew chapter 6 that reminds us not to worry because of who we are before God. “I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not more important than they? But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you (Matt 6:25-26, 33)
Today we are reminded that the sacraments are not the only source of our missionary call. The Word of God, living and active, continues to invite and to guide us on our discipleship path. Pope Francis urged that we “make room inside ourselves for the Word of God!” If we do that, “we will discover that God is close to us, that he dispels our darkness and, with great love, leads our lives into deep waters.” And he ended with a simple and practical advice. “Each day,” he said, “let us read a verse or two of the Bible. Let us begin with the Gospel: let us keep it open on our table, carry it in our pocket or bag, read it on our cell phones, and allow it to inspire us daily.”
Jesus continues to be present with us today in the Eucharist and in his words in the Gospels. Reading Sacred Scripture fills our mind with good thoughts to heal the negativity of the world. In other words, let us find at least a little time to read the love letter God has written to us. And invite Jesus into our life.
2000 years ago, Jesus called his first Apostle to bring His words to the world. He continues calls each one of us today to follow Him and be His Apostle. Let us ask Him to strengthen our faith, give us the courage to live by His Words so that we may shine as true lights in the world, showing patience where it is needed, love where there is hatred, kindness where it is the least expected.
Let each and every one of us ask the Lord Jesus to bless our Parish with an abundance of active holy members to do His holy work. And finally, let each and every one of us brings His Words to the world by our works, and our example as a disciple of Jesus.

Meditation:
Is the Lord Jesus honored in your home? Why would Jesus' relatives be so upset with him when he began his public ministry? On one occasion Jesus remarked that a man's enemies will be the members of his own household (Matthew 10:36). The Gospel of Mark records the reaction of Jesus' relatives when he went home: they came to seize him. They, no doubt, thought that Jesus must have gone mad or become a religious fanatic. How could a good home-body from Nazareth leave his carpentry trade and go off to become a traveling preacher? To their way of thinking, Jesus had thrown away the security and safety of a quiet and respectable life close to his family and relatives.
Do not be afraid to follow Jesus all the way
Jesus probably expected to meet opposition from the highest religious authorities in Jerusalem. For him to meet opposition from his own relatives must have been even harder. When we choose to be disciples of the Lord Jesus and to follow his will for our lives, we can expect to meet opposition from those who are opposed to the Gospel message and Christian way of life. But the hardest opposition may actually come from someone close to us, a family member or close friend who doesn't want us to take the Gospel message too seriously. Jesus met opposition - whether from family, friend, or foe - with grace and determination to fulfill his Father's will. Are you ready to obey and follow the Lord Jesus even if others oppose your doing so?
Lord Jesus, may I always put you first and find joy in doing your will. May your love and charity grow in me, especially in the face of opposition and adversity.

Opening Prayer:
Here I am, Lord, I come to do your will. In today's Gospel I see your commitment and self-giving. You are so generous with your time and your life. You are always present to all who need you. Help me to see and understand that the way you sacrifice and give yourself to the crowd is the way you sacrifice and give yourself to me.
Encountering Christ:
1. Total Self-Giving: Jesus went home, but even there he was not able to rest or eat. Jesus was human just like us and had the same human needs that we do, but here we see how he was ready to give up everything. His family members thought he was crazy. But this was God’s answer to man’s need. God gives us everything. Sometimes there are so many demands in our lives that it seems like following Christ is crazy. Yet, as his disciples, we willingly follow his example and give everything we have.
2. A Prefiguring of the Passion: This brief snapshot in the daily life of Christ prefigures what will happen in the culminating moment of his life. Men will crowd in upon him, constantly demanding more and more until they take his very life. Those who loved him did not want Christ to die on the cross and would have tried to find an escape, but that is not why God became man. He became man to give of himself for our sake. On the cross, that self-giving was made complete. Our daily self-giving is not a prefiguring of Christ's passion but a fulfilment of that passion in our own life.
3. A Prefiguring of the Eucharist: Even today, Jesus gives everything to those who press around him and demand his attention and his love. We experience this in the Eucharist. The Eucharist is all of God given to us, to be taken into our little hearts and bodies. What a gift from God! “When you look at the crucifix, you understand how much Jesus loved you then. When you look at the sacred Host, you understand how much Jesus loves you now” (St. Teresa of Calcutta). Christ doesn’t calculate or measure; he gives us all of himself. When we receive Christ in the Eucharist, he enables us to give everything, just as he does.
Conversing with Christ: Lord Jesus, have mercy on me. I can see your boundless love in this short anecdote from your daily life. Every moment of your life was lived with this generosity. You gave all on the cross, and you give us that all you are in the Eucharist. Thank you. I never want to forget your love and generosity. Please keep me always close to you.
Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will not be like those who try to limit Jesus’s generosity and self-giving. I will go to you many times during the day in prayer to ask you to heal me, to save me, to simply be with me. And I will spend ten minutes before the tabernacle in your Eucharistic presence.

Opening Prayer:
Here I am, Lord, I come to do your will. In today’s Gospel you appoint and send out your Twelve Apostles. I know that you have appointed me in the very same way. You have called me, set me apart, and then sent me. Please give me the strength to respond to your call. I wish to do your will and be your apostle. Although I know you will give me the strength, oftentimes I feel the weight of this mission, and I begin to doubt. I want to renew my commitment and my decision to answer your call and your mission.
Encountering Christ:
1. To Be with Him: The Gospel shows us that Jesus appointed his Twelve Apostles primarily so that they could be with him. To be with Jesus is the first reason to be an apostle. Even though the Greek word for apostle means someone who is sent, the Gospel makes it clear that the apostle, first of all, needs to be with Jesus. All of us need this. We need to be with Jesus always. There’s no better reason to be an apostle than to be committed to accompanying Jesus side by side.
2. Sent Forth to Preach: Now we come to the meaning of the Greek word for apostle: someone who is sent forth. How can an apostle of Christ both be with Christ and sent forth? Maybe we can find the answer in why the apostles are sent forth—to preach. An apostle can preach Christ only when he is with Christ. And truly preaching Christ makes him present with us and present to those listening. What an amazing spiritual reality.
3. Authority to Drive Out Demons: The authority to drive out demons may strike us as an incredible superpower. But Christ lists it in last place of his reasons for calling the apostles. The power to expel demons is a consequence of being with Christ and preaching him. When we do this according to God’s will, there’s very little room for the enemy to act. With Christ by our side, the devil is powerless and can wreak no evil in our soul, even though we know he is constantly out to destroy us.
Conversing with Christ: Lord Jesus, you have called me to be your apostle. It is a mission well beyond me, and many times I do not understand how to do it well. I have tried to meditate on the reasons you have called me, the reasons you call all of us. Help me to stay close to you always. Help me to preach you fearlessly to everyone that I meet. Keep me strong against the temptations of the devil.
Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will reflect on the vocation you have called me to, and see how I can better be with you, preach you, and stand strong against the devil in my life and in the life of others.

Daily Reflection
"He appointed twelve, whom he also named Apostles, that they might be with him and he might send them forth to preach and to have authority to drive out demons."
Calling, appointing, naming the 12 Apostles, No small moment in Christian church history. What would it have been like to be called as an Apostle? Would we have had the courage to accept Jesus' call, appointment, and mission? Do we have the courage to be disciples today?
Mark's gospel makes it clear immediately before the naming of the Apostles that Jesus has stirred serious controversy by forgiving the sins of a paralytic man, dining with tax collectors and sinners, and healing a man's withered hand on the Sabbath. The controversy has grown so strong that immediately after naming the Apostles, Jesus' own family thinks he is "out of his mind" and scribes from Jerusalem (presumably sent by official religious authorities to investigate this potentially threatening person) have concluded that Jesus is "possessed by Beelzebub" and drives out demons by the authority of the Devil. By accepting their appointment and mission to preach and drive out demons like Jesus, the Apostles will be labeled as controversial and dangerous like their leader.
What demons would Jesus be driving out today? Whom would he be healing? With whom would he be eating? About what would he be preaching? What authorities would think he was mentally ill, threatening, or evil? Would I have the courage and faith to follow such a man when he called?
Of course, Jesus is calling each of us every day. We need to discern in our lives what that call is and if we are truly willing to accept it. Jesus' call looks different in different people's lives, but I believe that one way or another it involves dining with and caring for the poor and marginalized, loving, forgiving, healing, welcoming the stranger and the migrant, and tirelessly working for peace and justice.
Jesus, help us to hear your call. Grant us the courage to accept your invitation to join you in your mission despite the potential danger and controversy.

Meditation:
What is God's call on your life? When Jesus embarked on his mission he chose twelve men for the task of preaching the kingdom of God and healing the sick in the power of that kingdom. In the choice of the twelve, we see a characteristic feature of God's work: Jesus chose very ordinary people. They were non-professionals, who had no wealth or position. They were chosen from the common people who did ordinary things, had no special education, and no social advantages. Jesus wanted ordinary people who could take an assignment and do it extraordinarily well. He chose these men, not for what they were, but for what they would be capable of becoming under his direction and power.
When the Lord calls us to serve, we must not shrug back because we think that we have little or nothing to offer. The Lord takes what ordinary people, like us, can offer and uses it for greatness in his kingdom. Do you make your life an offering to the Lord and allow him to use you as he sees fit?
"Lord Jesus, fill me with gratitude and generosity for all you have done for me. Take my life and all that I have as an offering of love for you, who are my All."

Friday 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today’s first reading reveals the greatness of David. This story is a perfect example of how to love one's enemy. Saul, who was tracking David down to kill him, slept in his tent. David, with his men, came in quietly and cut off a part of Saul’s cloak as he slept. David could so easily have killed Saul and thereby saved his own life. That is what any ‘normal’ soldier would have done in the circumstances. When Saul became aware of what happened, he was filled with shame. “You have repaid me with good while I have repaid you with evil.”
To repay evil with evil is to double the amount of evil. To repay evil with good can result in forgiveness, reconciliation and peace. Remember Jesus as He was being brutally nailed to the Cross. “Father, forgive them…” It is sometimes very difficult but it is really the only way to go. O Lord, let me be more and more a living example of Your unconditional love for all.

Amen.

Thursday after 2nd Sunday of Ordinary
Lord, I know that you are present here and I trust in your divine intervention. Open my mind and heart to hear your words and be changed by them.
Is there anything holding you back from giving yourself to God without fear or reservation? Jesus offered freedom to everyone who sought him out. Wherever Jesus went the people came to him because they had heard about all the wonderful deeds and miracles which he performed. They were hungry for God and desired healing from their afflictions. In faith they pressed upon Jesus to touch him. As they did so power came from Jesus and they were healed. Do you seek to lay hold of Jesus' presence in your life that he may touch and heal you?
Draw near to Jesus with expectant faith and he will answer Augustine of Hippo (354-430 A.D.) remarked:
"It is by faith that we touch Jesus. And far better to touch him by faith than to touch or handle him with the hands only and not by faith. It was no great thing to merely touch him manually. Even his oppressors doubtless touched him when they apprehended him, bound him, and crucified him, but by their ill-motivated touch they lost precisely what they were laying hold of. O worldwide church! It is by touching him faithfully that your 'faith has made you whole' (Isaiah 1:10-18; Matthew 9:22; Mark 5:34; Mark 10:52; Luke 8:48; John 20:29)." (excerpt from SERMONS, ON EASTER 148)
The Lord Jesus has power to heal, restore, and make us new. Why did Jesus perform so many countless miracles and signs during his earthly ministry? Cyril of Alexandria (376-444 AD) wrote that these signs and miracles showed that Jesus was truly God - the eternal Word who was made flesh for our salvation:
[Jesus] performed very many wonderful miracles, rebuking demons, delivering from incurable diseases whoever drew near to him, and displaying his own most divine power. He did these works so that both the Jews, who had run together to him, and those from the country of the Greeks might know that Christ was not some ordinary man of those in our degree but, on the contrary, God. He honored these chosen disciples with the dignity of the apostolate. He was the Word that was made man but retained nevertheless his own glory. "For power went forth from him and healed all." Christ did not borrow strength from some other person, but being himself God by nature, even though he had become flesh, he healed them all, by the demonstration of power over the sick.
Why did the demons tremble in the presence of Jesus (Mark 3:11)? They recognized that his power and authority came from heaven and not from earth. But while they confessed Christ and trembled in his presence, they did not respond in love.
Receive God's word with expectant faith, persevering hope, and fervent love. When you read God's word and consider all that Jesus said and did, how do you respond? With indifference, hesitation, or skepticism, or with expectant faith, love, and willing obedience? Ask the Lord Jesus to draw you to himself with increasing faith, fervent love, and eager readiness to do his will.
Lord Jesus Christ, you are the Son of God and the Savior of the world. Inflame my heart with a burning love for you and with an expectant faith in your saving power. Set me free from all that hinders me from drawing closer to you.

Opening Prayer:
Lord, I know that you are present here and I trust in your divine intervention. Open my mind and heart to hear your words and be changed by them.
Encountering Christ:
1. They Came to Him: A “great multitude” followed Jesus from Galilee. “Hearing all that he had been doing” impelled them to seek him out. Who was this mystery man? Some were intrigued by his words. Many sought physical healings, and Jesus was their last hope. Would they believe that Jesus was more than a prophet, more than a teacher? Would Jesus impress upon them his authority, his majesty, his individual love for each of them? An encounter with Jesus brings with it great promises of abundant grace, spiritual awakening, forgiveness, and more. What did this great multitude experience? We can experience the same graces every day when we pray.
2. They Would Not Crush Him: The crowds surrounding Jesus were weighed down by spiritual, emotional, and physical afflictions. Jesus would not be “crushed” by the weight of their burdens, rather, “He took on [their] infirmities and carried [their] sorrows” (Isaiah 53:4). When our anxieties, our afflictions, our worries weigh us down, we can cast them confidently onto Jesus. Nothing is so overwhelming that Jesus cannot carry it for us, if we will only give it to him to handle.
3. You Are the Son of God: The demons knew that this man, Jesus, was more than he seemed. Jesus silenced them. Why didn’t Jesus claim his title, “Son of God”? Because, it was not yet the time appointed by his Father. In all things, large or small, Jesus obeyed the Father’s will, setting an example for each of us.
Conversing with Christ: Lord, I am filled with afflictions in body, mind, and soul. I come to you and beg of you to take the weight from me, so that I no longer feel crushed by it. Replace my worries with faith and hope so that my very being cries out, “You are the Son of God!”
Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will remember to bring my troubles, pains, and worries to you in prayer before I act.

Meditation (SG 2017)
Pride and competition can be our destruction. Saul was angry and jealous because many of the people sang David’s praises louder and more enthusiastically than his. As David’s reputation grew, Saul felt diminished, and began to lash out in rage and paranoia. True humility is being comfortable with who and what we are.
We can always strive to grow and improve, but this should be for its own sake and not because we feel angry or threatened by the success of others. So much of our grief stems from our attempts to outshine others - it is far better to thank God, each day, for who and what we are. To do otherwise is to reject and dishonour the gift of life that we received from God.
The demons and evil spirits seemed to know exactly who and what Jesus was, and they were afraid. He forbade them to speak. Others seemed to be attracted to Jesus because of his healings and exorcisms, although they probably did not understand much about him. They were driven by desperation and need, just as so many are today. When those who bear the name of Christ give hope, courage, compassion, and enlightenment, people will come. But when platitudes, harsh language, or condemnation are the only dishes on the table, they will stay away, and we should not be surprised. Let us each day strive to give others hope and healing. Lord, I thank You for who I am.

Meditation (SG 2016)
Saul was upset and beside himself. Although the people sang his praises, they sang them quite a bit louder for David. Saul had killed thousands of the enemy (what a terrible thing to brag about!) but David had killed tens of thousands. There had always been bad blood and animosity between Saul and David, and now it increased
Our wounded egos and hurt feelings can be deadly things and cause a lot of damage. Pride is a form of fear when we are content with who and what we are, we do not feel a need to ‘defend’ ourselves.
The crowds were desperate, for they suffered greatly from many afflictions: disease, demonic possession, deformities, and all manner of unhappiness. They pressed in on Jesus until they were in danger of overwhelming him. In addition to their pain, they felt great hope. Jesus had shown them the mercy and compassion of God. They dared to believe that there was a way out of their misery. Perhaps the greatest service that we can do for God and other people today is to give hope. Hope is very scarce; we live in a very uncertain and frightening world, and many people feel that they have no future.
We turn to Jesus in our need, but we also share with others what he gives to us. Kindness, mercy, and compassion are the best way to proclaim the Gospel. Lord, may I give hope to others.
