 Suy Niệm Tin Mừng thứ Tư tuần thứ 10 Thường Niên

Trong khi các đoạn Tin Mửng hôm qua (Mt.5: 13-16) Chúa Giêsu mô tả nhiệm vụ và bổn phận của các môn đệ, Bài Tin Mừng hôm nay chúng ta nghe Chúa Giêsu nói với chúng ta về sứ vụ của Chúa Giêsu liên quan đến các điều luật của Thiên Chúa. Nhiệm vụ của Ngài đến với Thế gian không phải là để tiêu diệt hoặc bãi bỏ lề luật của các tiên tri, nhưng Ngài đến để thực hành và làm gương để cho những Luật này được nên trọn vẹn. Vậy Chúa Giêsu có ý Khi Ngài nói là Ngài đến để thực thi luật của Chúa?

Chúa Giêsu đã đến để tỏ lộ cho chúng ta thấy rõ được ý nghĩa thực sự của Cựu Ước và do đó Ngài đã đến để hoàn thành. Nhưng thực thi theo Thánh Mathêu có nghĩa là phải triệt để và bén nhậy với những nhu cầu luật pháp, để phù hợp với việc loan báoTin Mừng Nước Thiên Chúa. Bằng cách này, mà Chúa Giêsu đã mời gọi tất cả mọi người phải nhận ra là tinh thần của luật pháp và thi hành những luật pháp ấy chứ không phải chỉ đơn thuần là thực hiện những chữ viết trong bộ Luật. Điều này cũng được khẳng định cho chúng ta thấy trong bài đọc thứ Nhất hôm nay (v. 6) trong đó Than1nh Phao lô đã nói và nhấn mạnh rằng là thật sự không phải là chữ viết của giao ước mới là vấn đề, nhưng là thần khí.

Những ”chữ viết”' ở đây đồng nghĩa với pháp luật như một tiêu chuẩn bề ngoài mà đặt trước tất cả mọi người, bởi vì con người là bộ phận hay phạm pháp hay phá vỡ luật pháp, một tội phạm bị kết án và bị kết án tử hình. Mặt khác, Thần khí (Chúa Thánh Thần) là Đấng ban sự sống là "Thần khí” của Thiên Chúa hằng sống, người mà đã đến để hoàn tất những ứng nghiệm lời hứa trong giao ước mới. Thần khí viết các lề luật tương tư như thế ngay trên bia đá trong tâm hồn của chúng ta " (v. 3). Đấy là Chúa Giêsu, bộ luật mới của chúng ta. Vì thế, chúng ta là, là những các môn đệ của Chúa Kitô, chúng ta phải biết tuân theo, vâng lời luật của Chúa mỗi ngày bằng cách là biết sống và làm theo ý muốn của Thiên Chúa, và sống theo cách của Chúa trong sự công minh, chính trực.

Lạy Chúa, xin giúp và ban chúng con có được ân sũng của Chúa ban mỗi ngày, để chúng con biết tuân giữ luật pháp của Chúa là luật biết yêu thương người. là biết tìm kiếm ý muốn của Thiên Chúa trong tất cả mọi việc con làm, Và Ngài sẽ chỉ cho chúng con thấy được lối mà con sẽ đi.. và khi ra giúp chúng con biết nhận ra Người trong mọi nẻo đường con đi và Người sẽ san phẳng các lối con theo.

Reflection SG Week 10 of Ordinary Time

While the preceding passage (Mt.5:13-16) describes he mission to the disciples, today’s gospel talks about the mission of Jesus in relation to the law. His mission is not to destroy or abolish the law and the prophets but to fulfill them. What does Jesus mean by fulfillment of the law?

Jesus came to reveal the true meaning of the OT and thus bring it to fulfillment. But fulfillment, Matthew means radicalizing and sharpening the demands of the law in accordance with the proclamation of the Kingdom. By this he was inviting the people to realize the spirit of the law and not mere observance of the letter of the law. This is reiterated in the first reading (v. 6) wherein stated that it is not the letter of the new covenant that matters but the spirit.

The ‘letter’ here is synonymous with the law as an external standard before which all people, because they are law breakers, stood guilty and condemned to death. On the other hand, the spirit who gives life is the ‘spirit of the living God’s, who, in fulfillment of the promise of the new covenant, writes that the same law inwardly on tablets of human hearts’ (v. 3). This is Jesus — our new law. So, as disciples of Christ, we respond daily to the law by doing God’s will with righteousness and as a way of life.

“Lord, grant us the grace to observe the spirit of the law of love.”

Wednesday week 10th of Ordinary Time

Opening Prayer: Come Holy Spirit, open my heart that you might write the new law of Christ upon it. Jesus, come and live in my heart always; dwell within me so others may encounter you through me.

Encountering Christ:

The Warning: This Gospel passage contains a warning and a promise. Breaking the commandments of the law, or worse, teaching others to break the commandments, leads do the warning. Later in Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus strongly explained this warning: “If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were fastened around your neck and you were drowned in the depth of the sea” (Matthew 18:6). His message is clear: if you lead children or people who have less knowledge than you to sin, you put a stumbling block in front of them, which is a mortal sin and separates you from God for as long as you remain unrepentant.

The Promise: The promise is that those who obey and teach the commandments will have a special place in Christ’s Kingdom. One does not necessarily need to be a teacher or catechist to teach others. We can teach others through our good examples. Parents have a special responsibility to teach their children to obey God’s commands. A good prayer to remind us of our commitment to follow God’s commands is the Jewish Shema prayer. The entire Shema is comprised of Deuteronomy 6:4-9, Deuteronomy 11:13-21, and Numbers 15:37-41. It begins: “Hear, O Israel, the Lord, our God, is Lord alone. You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. You shall keep these things that I command you today in your heart. Teach them to your children. You shall talk of them when you are sitting in your home, and when you are walking along the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up.”

Love Is the New Law: Jesus came to fulfill the law, not change it. According to the Catechism, “Jesus acknowledged the Ten Commandments, but he also showed the power of the Spirit at work in their letter” (CCC 2054). Jesus is the living, breathing law of God. God’s divine law was not nullified by Christ’s coming; it was united and perfected in him. He is the new law, which we fulfill through love: the commandments “are all summed up in this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ Love cannot result in any harm to the neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfillment of the law” (Romans 13:9-10). We can ask ourselves if we seek to fulfill God’s law each day by loving him above all things and loving my neighbors as ourselves.

Conversing with Christ: My Jesus, I glorify you and praise you, the new law of God. I am sorry for the times when I have failed to follow your commandments and especially for any times when I have misled others into breaking your commandments. Please forgive me for my past sins and lead me rightly so that I obey and teach your commandments always.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will do my duty to the best of my ability as an expression of my love for you and love for others.

REFLECTION 2019

For many of us laws are seen as restricting and preventing us from asserting our freedom. Laws tell us what to do and what not to do, thus confining and restricting us. Often we forget the origin, the spirit and the context in which laws were crafted and written. We easily forget that our leaders and hopefully wise men and women of the past had carefully studied and prepared laws for the good of society and future generations. Even simple traffic regulations exist not to restrict us but to ensure safety and order for all. Our short Gospel reading today from the Sermon on the Mount reminds us of the importance of our laws. The laws of God promulgated by Moses in the Ten Commandments will last as long as humankind lives: love and respect of God and neighbor cannot be changed nor repealed. Jesus had come to fulfill and perfect these laws.

    It is good for us to ask ourselves how we observe laws and regulations which govern our lives, be they from civil society or the Church or even smaller voluntary groups we have joined. How do we rate the importance of these laws and regulations in our lives? Do we feel obliged to observe them?

    In the Gospel readings we see Jesus respecting the Mosaic Law and at times, seemingly, breaking them for higher reasons. We see Jesus "ignoring" or "violating" the Sabbath to heal the sick and infirm. We see him associating with supposed sinners and dreaded lepers.

    Jesus was saddened, even made angry, by the teachers of the Law insisting on the precepts of the Law and at the same time unmindful of the sick and needy.

    Today we are asked to see laws as gifts from God, for a better and safer society. Indeed some laws may not be perfect and may even be unjust. Our task is to work with these laws and to improve them, so that, helped by the laws, we may have a better and more just society and indeed for God's greater glory.

Đối với các thầy thông giáo và người Biệt Phái, việc chấp hành nghiêm chỉnh luật Moisen và những luật do thái khác của họ thì rất cần thiết và quan trọng cho đời sống tâm linh của họ. Tuy nhiên, đối với Chúa Giêsu, thì việc bắt dận chúng thực hành đúng như các quy định và luật lệ này thì thật quà là một gánh nặng cho nhiều người, bởi vì những người dân nghèo ít học không thể nào hiểu nổi những điều căn bản về những luật này. Tuy nhiên, những khi Ngài chỉ trích những người Biệt Phái và những người theo họ đã mù loà đễ tuân thủ những luật Do Thái, Ngài cũng đã Nhấn mạnh là Ngài không đến để xóa bỏ chúng. Vậy chúng ta đã hiểu được những gì khi Ngài đã nói với những có mặt và môn đệ của Ngài là sự công chính của họ thậm chí phải vượt xa sự công chính của các thầy thông giáo và người Pha-?

    Một số quy chế và luật lệ được để bảo vệ mối quan hệ của chúng ta với nhau. Chúng ta cũng có quy tắc chi phối mối quan hệ của chúng tôi với Thiên Chúa. Khi những quy tắc nhất định được đưa ra để làm tiêu chuẩn, hầu hết mọi người chỉ cần làm theo chúng mà không cần suy nghĩ hoặc phản ánh về ý nghĩa của nó. Nhiều người nhắm mắt hay mù quáng làm theo nhuững chữ viết trong luật mà hiếm khi suy nghĩ về ý nghĩa tinh thần của cái luật ấy. Đây là những gì mà Chúa muốn chỉ ra cho chúng ta thấy rõ trong Tin Mừng hôm nay. Chúng ta hãy tự hỏi về cái thái độ của các kinh sư và người Pharisêu, những người nghiêm túc tuân thủ luật lệ tôn giáo của họ. Nhưng, Chúng ta cũng phải quan tâm đến thái độ và tâm lý của một số rất nhiều người trong chúng ta. Có bao nhiêu người trong chúng ta ở trong số những người thiểu số khi nói đến đức tin và mối quan hệ của chúng ta đối với Thiên Chúa? Có lẽ ố đông chúng ta cũng đã đang sống theo những quy tắc và điều răn quy định mà chúng ta không hề hiểu biết đến do đó chúng ta không thể nào có thể tiếp thu được chúng.

    Khi những quy định này trở nên quá khó khăn để sống, chúng ta chắc chắn sẽ không thèm để ý đến bỏ qua những luật lệ này hay chỉ biết miễn cưỡng làm theo vì chúng ta sợ bị lên án đời đời. Cho một cái thí dụ căn bản như là Thánh Lễ, thử nghĩ đã có bao nhiêu người trong chúng ta thực sự và hết lòng cầm lòng, cầm trí tham dự và hiểu ý nghĩa của Thánh Lễ?

    Hôm nay, chúng ta hãy suy niệm về mối quan hệ và thái độ của chúng ta đối với Thiên Chúa. Có phải chúng ta là những người Kitô hữu lãnh đạm, thờ ơ? Hay chúng ta là những Kitô hữu theo Chúa một cách theo thời vì có lợi cho bản thân? Hay chúng ta là những người Kitô hữu theo cảm hứng và chịu sự hướng dẫn người khác trong mối quan hệ của họ với Thiên Chúa?

REFLECTION

For the scribes and Pharisees, the strict observance of the Mosaic law and many of their commentaries serve as a guide to almost every activity they do. However, for Jesus, the strict observance of these rules or regulations becomes more of a burden to most of the people, because these people do not understand the basis of such practices. Yet, even as he criticized the Pharisees and their followers for their blind and strict observance of the law, he emphasized that he did not come to abolish them. So, how are we to understand what he meant when he told his listeners that their righteousness must even exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees?

    Certain practices or regulations govern our relationship with each other. We also have rules that govern our relationship with God. When certain rules are established as the norm, most people just follow them without thinking or reflecting on its meaning. Many people blindly follow the letter and rarely ponder on the spirit of the law. This is what our Lord wanted to point out in today's Gospel. We may wonder at the attitude of the Scribes and Pharisees, who seriously observe their faith. But, we also encounter this attitude and mentality among many of us. How many of us are minimalists when it comes to our faith and our relationship with God? We follow the many prescribed rules or commandments without much understanding and hence we fail to internalize them.

    When these rules become too difficult to follow, we end up ignoring them or follow them reluctantly because we fear eternal condemnation. For something as basic as the Mass, how many of us truly and wholeheartedly participate and understand its meaning?

    Today, let us reflection on our relationship and attitude towards God. Are we lukewarm Christians? Are we Christians of convenience? Or are we one who inspire and guide others in their relationship with God?
