Suy niệm Tin Mừng Thứ Năm Tuần 7 Phục Sinh

            Khi không có sự hiệp nhất trong nhóm,  thì nhất định sẽ có sự hỗn loạn trong nhóm, và đó là những gì đã xảy ra trong bài đọc thứ Nhất hôm nay. Vì thế chúng ta phải đoàn kết, hiệp nhất trong việc làm để cùng đạt tới được sự hiệp nhất mà Chúa Giêsu Kitô đã cầu nguyện cho cho tất cả chúng ta là những thành viên trong Giáo Hội tương lai của Ngài ngay sau Bữa Tiệc Ly. Trong Giáo Hội Công Giáo, Thánh Thể là bí tích hiệp nhất tất cả các thành viên của Hội Thánh Công Giáo chúng ta để làm MỘT cùng với Chúa Kitô và với nhau.  Bí tích Hôn Nhân cũng có cùng một ý nghĩa là để miêu tả sự hiệp nhất của các thành viên trong Giáo Hội với Chúa Kitô là người đứng đầu của Giáo Hội, Những cặp vợ chồng được ơn gọi riêng biệt là đến với nhau, sống với nhau trong một tình yêu và tình yêu đã dành cho hai người Nam và Nữ khi họ và cùng thề hứa sống với nhau.

     Thiên Chúa có Ba Ngôi nhưng Ba Ngôi trong một Thiên Chúa, "Ba Ngôi bằng nhau trong quyền bính, ba ngôi bằng nhau và không thể phân chia trong sự vinh quang, nhưng chỉ có một Chúa, một Thiên Chúa."  Chúng ta hãy cầu xin cho tất cả các tín hữu và những người theo Chúa Kitô sẽ đạt được sự hiệp nhất trong Chúa Kitô như Chúa Giêsu đã cầu nguyện ngay trong Bữa Tiệc Ly. Chúng ta hãy tạ ơn Chúa Giêsu vì những lời mà Ngài đã cầu nguyện cho tất cả chúng ta. Chúng ta cầu nguyện xin Chúa cho chúng ta có thể sống nên một trong Chúa Giêsu và luôn biết kiên định trong đức tin của chúng ta mặc dù chúng ta đang phải đương đầu với rất nhiều cám dỗ và quyến rũ của thế giới hôm nay.

Reflection: 

     In the first reading, St. Paul, knowing that his audience was composed of two factions, Pharisees and Sadducees, starts to talk about a point of contention between them. This led to a bitter dispute between the two groups, and they forget about Paul whom they opposed because of his preaching of Jesus.  

     When there is no unity in a group, there is chaos, and that is what happened in the first reading. There are many obstacles to overcome in order to achieve unity. 

     We must work to achieve the unity that Christ prayed for at the Last Supper. In the Church the Eucharist is the sacrament which unifies all its members with Christ and with one another.

     The sacrament of matrimony is also meant to portray the unity of the members of the Church with Christ, its head. Couples are called to be one in love for each other.  

     The Triune God is One in the Godhead, "three Persons equal in majesty, undivided in splendor, yet one Lord, one God."      May all the believers and followers of Christ achieve the unity Christ prayed for at the Last Supper,  as we pray on the feast of the Chair of St. Peter, Apostle, "Grant, we pray, almighty God, that no tempests may disturb us, for you have set us fast  on the rock of the Apostle Peter's confession of faith."

^“Con không chỉ cầu nguyện cho những người này, nhưng còn cho những ai nhờ lời họ mà tin vào con”.

 Đây là một phần lời cầu nguyện của Chúa Giêsu với Chúa Cha cho các môn đệ của ngài và cũng như cho chúng ta. Chúa Giêsu cầu nguyện cho chúng ta là các thành viên hiện tại trong Giáo Hội của người.  Ngài cầu nguyện cho chúng ta ở đây để chúng ta được thông phần trong sự thân mật Thần Linh, đó là sự sống của Thiên Chúa Ba Ngôi.  Chúa Giêsu hiện đang sống trong chúng ta đã từng thể hiện lời nguyện này (Gioan 17: 20 -26) liên quan đến chúng ta là những tín hữu tại thời điểm này trong lịch sử. Ngay bây giờ tại thời điểm này Chúa Giêsu cầu nguyện trong chúng ta để chúng ta có thể cầu nguyện. Cầu nguyện trong quyền năng của Chúa Giêsu là được ở trong Thiên Chúa, để chiêm ngưỡng vinh quang của Ngài, để chia sẻ trong niềm vui của Ngài. Những ân sũng của sự chiêm niệm cầu nguyện là chúng ta ý thức được ngay lập tức là chúng ta  được kết hợp và hiệp nhất trong Chúa Kitô, Đấng là Thiên Chúa mà chúng ta không thể nào cò thể nhìn nhận như là một đối tượng bên ngoài của chúng ta.

Nhưng chúng ta cảm nghiệm được rằng những hoạt động bên trong tâm thức của chúng ta về sự hiểu biết , yêu thương, và cảm giác của Ba Ngôi Thiên Chúa . Chính Tình yêu làm nên tất cả điều này. Tình yêu của Thiên Chúa tuôn ra bởi Thánh Linh tạo nên lời cầu nguyện trong chúng ta. Chúng ta chỉ cầu nguyện vì chúng ta đã được sống trong Thiên Chúa. Chúa Giêsu cầu nguyện cho ân sũng này. Trong Ngài chúng ta đã nhận được những ân sũng chia sẻ cho chúng ta trong sự sống của Chúa Ba Ngôi. Là những người biết tin vào Chúa, Chúng ta hoàn toàn hiệp thông với các giáo huấn của Chúa Giêsu cũng như các lời đã được truyền lại cho chúng ta bằng chữ viết và truyền thống đức tin của chúng ta.

Chúng ta hãy tạ ơn Chúa Giêsu và suy ngẫm về lời cầu nguyện cho tất cả chúng ta. Chúng ta cầu nguyện xin Chúa cho chúng ta có thể là một trong Chúa Giêsu và luôn biết kiên định trong đức tin của chúng ta mặc dù chúng ta đang phải đương đầu với rất nhiều cám dỗ và quyến rũ của thế giới hôm nay.

Meditation: “May they become perfectly one”

When you pray what do you usually ask for - God's help, blessing, guidance, and wisdom? One of the greatest privileges and responsibilities we have been given by God is to pray not only for ourselves, but for others as well. The Lord Jesus lived a life full of prayer, blessing, and gratitude. He prayed for his disciples, especially when they were in great need or danger. Mark tells us in his Gospel account (see chapter 6:46-51) that when Jesus was praying alone on the mountain he saw that his disciples were in great distress due to a life-threatening storm that was beating against their boat. Jesus immediately came to their rescue - walking on the waves of the rough waters before he calmed them! Luke records in his gospel account the words of Jesus to Simon Peter shortly before Jesus' arrest and Peter's denial of the Lord three times. "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers" (Luke 22:32). Jesus' prayers were personal, direct, and focused on the good of others.

The longest recorded prayer of Jesus is found in the Gospel of John, the "high priestly" prayer which Jesus prayed aloud at his last supper meal with his disciples (John 17). This prayer most clearly reveals the heart of Jesus - who and what he loved most - love for his Father and love for those who believed in him. His prayer focused on the love and unity he desired for all who would believe in him and follow him, not only in the present, but in the future as well. Jesus' prayer concludes with a petition for the unity among all Christians who profess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Jesus prays for all men and women who will come after him and follow him as his disciples. In a special way Jesus prays here for each one of us that as members of his body the church we would be one as he and his Father are one. The unity of Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, with the eternal Father is a unity of mutual love, service, and honor, and a oneness of mind, heart, and spirit. The Lord Jesus calls each and every one of his followers into this unity of mutual love, service, honor, and friendship with all who belong to Christ.

Jesus’ prayer on the eve of his sacrifice shows the great love and trust he had for his beloved disciples. He knew they would abandon him in his hour of trial, yet he entrusted to them the great task of spreading his name throughout the world and to the end of the ages. The Lord Jesus entrust us today with the same mission - to make him known and loved by all. Jesus died and rose again that all might be one as he and the Father are one. Do you love and accept all baptized Christians as your brothers and sisters in Christ?

            The Lord Jesus included each one of us in his high priestly prayer at the last supper. He continues his high priestly office this very day as our intercessor at the right hand of the Father before the throne of heaven. Paul the Apostle tells us that it is "Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us" (Romans 8:34; see also Hebrews 7: 25). Do you join in Jesus' high priestly prayer that all who profess Jesus as Lord may grow in love and unity together as brothers and sisters who have been redeemed through the precious blood shed for us on the cross?

            "Heavenly Father, have mercy on all your people and heal the divisions in the body of Christ. May all Christian people throughout the world attain the unity for which Jesus prayed on the eve of his sacrifice. Renew in us the power of the Spirit that we may be a sign of that unity and a means of its growth. Increase in us a fervent love for all our brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ."

 Friday 7^th of Easter (May 22):  Scripture: John 21:15-19

15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." 16 A second time he said to him, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep." 17 He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love  me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Suy Niêm Tin Mừng Thứ Tư sau tuần 7 Phục Sinh - John 17:11-19

Những bài Tin Mừng trong ngày thứ thứ ba, thứ tư và thứ năm trong tuần này (tuần thứ 7 mùa Phục Sinh) là những bài đọc hay nhất và đã được gộp lại với nhau. Những bài này được rút ra từ chương XVII trong sách Tin Mừng của Thánh Gioan, những bài Tin Mừng này đã cho chúng ta thấy được sự chân thành trong lời cầu nguyện, những mối quan tâm mà Chúa Giêsu hằng âm ỉ giữ mải trong tâm khảm của Ngài khi Ngài biết rằng Ngài sẽ phải ra đi vào vườn Cây Dầu và lên đường chuẩn bị lên núi Calvary.

            Trong khi Ngài cầu nguyện cho "tất cả mọi người", đặc biệt, Chúa Giêsu đã cầu nguyện cho những người có đang mặt trong phòng Tiệc Ly và tất cả những người đã từng theo Chúa và cùng làm việc với Chúa trong việc làm cho Nước Chúa được hiện diện ở giữa những người trong thế kỷ thứ nhất tại Jerusalem, Giuđêa và Galilê .

            Điều đáng chú ý, tuy nhiên, Chúa Giêsu đã cầu nguyện một cách rõ ràng cho những thế hệ mai sau, cho những ai sẽ tin tưởng ở nơi Ngài qua những lời rao giảng của các môn đệ của Ngài và của người kế vị các Tông Đồ thay mặt Chúa giáo huấn cho mọi ngươì, Tóm lại, Chúa Giêsu đã cầu nguyện cho tất cả chúng ta, cho các tín hữu như chúng ta đang ở trong Người. Ngài cầu nguyện xin Thiên Chúa cho chúng ta mãi mãi được đoàn kết và đó điều rất là quan trọng trong thế giới đang bị đầy rẫy những chia rẽ này. Ngài cũng cầu nguyện cho tất chúng ta là sẽ gặp và thấy riêng Ngài trong vinh quang Thiên Chúa trên thiên đàng. Đây phải là một ý nghĩ cần phải có trong tâm trí của chúng ta mỗi ngày.

            Khi chúng ta nói với bạn bè của chúng ta rằng chúng ta đang cầu nguyện cho họ để cho họ có được niềm vui và hạnh phúc. Chúng ta cũng sẽ vui mừng và an ủi khi chúng ta biết rằng họ cũng đang cầu nguyện cho chúng ta. Thật là một thúc đẩy và hạnh phúc cho chúng ta khi chúng ta nhận biết được rằng Chúa Giêsu đã và đang cầu nguyện cho chúng ta. Không còn lời ca nào có ý nghĩa và đúng như lời ca của bài bài thánh ca, "Thật là một người bạn tốt mà chúng ta đã có trong Chúa Giêsu"!

Reflection SG:

The Gospel readings for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for this 7th week of Easter are best taken together. They make up the seventeenth chapter of St John’s Gospel. They present us in prayer form the concerns that were in the heart of Jesus as he was about to leave the Supper Room for Gethsemane and Calvary.

            While he prayed for “all people” he prayed in particular for those present in the Supper Room and all those others who worked with him in his mission to make present the Kingdom of God among the men and women of first century Jerusalem, Judea and Galilee.

            Strikingly, however, he prayed explicitly for those generations to come who would believe in him because of the words of the disciples present in the room and of their successors. In short he prayed for you and for me, believers as we are in him. He prayed that we would be united and that is very important in this divided world. He prayed too that we would see him clearly, personally in his glory in heaven. What a thought to have in our minds for the day.

            When we tell our friends that we are praying for them they are happy. We are happy and consoled when we know that they are praying for us. What a boost it is for us when we realize that Jesus prayed for us and is praying for us. How true are those words of the hymn, “What a friend we have in Jesus”!

Dear Jesus, friend and inspirer, help us to believe in your continuing, loving interest in us.

Reflection

Do we know what our mission in life is? Jesus' mission was to glorify his heavenly Father through obedience to His will. In the Gospel, we see Jesus who has finished his mission on earth and about to return to his Father in heaven.

Jesus' strength comes from the Father. We who aspire to become disciples of Jesus must pray for strength from the Holy Spirit. As his disciples, we are consecrated in God's truth and holiness. To "consecrate" means "to be made holy or to set apart for God". It also means to be equipped with the qualities of mind, heart and character for a task or service. Just as Jesus was called by the Father to serve in holiness and truth, so we too, are called and equipped for the task of serving God in the world as his representatives. God's truth frees us from ignorance and the deception of sin. It also reveals to us God's goodness, love, and wisdom. Is our life consecrated to God?

May the Lord, take our lives and make it wholly pleasing to him. May He sanctify us in His truth and may the Holy Spirit guide us that we may follow Him faithfully wherever He may lead us.

Những lời cầu nguyện của Chúa Giêsu với Thiên Chúa Cha trong bài Tin Mừng hôm nay cho chúng thấy được là: Chúa Giêsu đã cầu nguyện cho tất cả những ai đã, đang và sẽ  theo Ngài.  Trong đêm trước khi Ngài bị bắt, chịu khổ hình và phải chết, Chúa Giêsu đã cầu nguyện, Ngài không hề hối tiếc những việc Ngài đã làm vì vâng phục theo như Thánh Ý Chúa Cha.  Ngài biết là Ngài đã thực hiện những công việc mà Thiên Chúa Cha đã giao phó cho Ngài để làm, và để làm cho mọi người trong thế giới này được nhận biết ra được Thiên Chúa Cha .

            Trong khi Thánh Phaolô đang chuẩn bị rời khỏi thành Êphêsô để được sai đến thành Jerusalem, nơi mà ông biết là ông sẽ phải kết thúc việc rao giảng công khai của ông. Ông ấp ủ không hối tiếc về cuộc sống này. Ông đã sử dụng của tất cả những cơ hội mà Thiên Chúa đã trao cho ông để ông làm sáng danh Chúa Giêsu ở giữa những người dân ngoại. Ông đã hoàn thành tất cả những nhiệm vụ mà Chúa đã trao phó cho ông.

            Qua hai bài đọc, chúng ta thấy có sự khác biệt giữa Chúa Giêsu và thánh Phaolô. Có lẽ như là sự khác biệt giữa các thánh và con người của chúng ta. Chúng ta đã bỏ lỡ những cơ hội Chúa ban cho chúng bằng cách luôn luôn tìm sống với và trong tương lai. "Ngày mai, tôi sẽ nhất định sẽ làm một cái gì đó cho cuộcc sống tâm linh của tôi." "Ngày mai tôi sẽ hòa giải với những người đã làm tổn thương tôi." "Ngày mai tôi sẽ bắt đầu dành nhiều thời giờ hơn cho gia đình tôi…"

            Khi chúng ta già đi, hầu hết chúng ta mới khám phá, nhớ lại và tiếc hối những cơ hội mà chúng ta đã đánh mất.

Một niềm an ủi cho chúng ta là có Chúa Giêsu đã sẵn sàng thông cảm và tha thứ cho sự mệt mỏi của các tông đồ của Ngài, "Tâm thần tuy sẵn sàng, nhưng xác thịt thì yếu nhược". (Mt 26:41) ." Nhưng việc này sẽ là dịp may lớn cho chúng ta, nếu chúng ta biết từ bỏ tất cả mọi thứ vật chất để hướng vào sự hiện diện của một Thiên Chúa luôn rất yêu thương và hiểu biết.

REFLECTIONToday's Gospel begins with the prayer Jesus says to his Father for all those who would be his followers. Jesus prays this prayer on the night before he is to die. He has no regrets. He knows he has done the work his Father gave him to do: to make his Father known among the people of his day.

            Paul in the first reading also looks back over his life. He is about to set off from Ephesus for Jerusalem, where he knows will be the beginning of the end for him. He harbors no regrets about this life. He has made use of all the opportunities God had given to him to make the name of Jesus known among the Gentiles. He has fulfilled the mission given him by the Lord.

            The difference between Jesus and Paul is perhaps the difference between the saints and the rest of us. We miss the opportunities the Lord gives us by always living in the future. "Tomorrow I will get down to doing something about my spiritual life." "Tomorrow I will reconcile with those who have hurt me." "Tomorrow I will start giving more time to my family."

            As we get older, most of us discover and recall lost opportunities. The one consolation we have is that it was the Lord Jesus who said, excusing the weariness of his apostles, "The spirit is willing, the flesh is weak." But will it not be unfortunate if we will have to go empty-handed into the presence of so loving and understanding a Lord?

REFLECTION Epriest daily

1. A Legacy of Prayer: The supreme hour of Jesus has come. As he anticipates his agony of self-giving love to the extreme, Christ has no thought for himself. His heart turns to its one and only love, the one for whose glory he has carried out every act of his earthly existence: his Father. But at the same time, that invincible love for his Father embraces all those whom the Father has entrusted to him. Christ leaves his followers a legacy that will remain their greatest source of confidence throughout the ages: his priestly prayer. In this, Christ teaches us how to pray. Christ prays first that his Father may be glorified by glorifying the Son. What is the supreme glory with which the life of the only Son of God will culminate? The answer is in his bloody immolation upon the cross.

2. The Cross is True Glory: “The word ‘glory’ refers to the splendor, honor and power which belong to God” (The Navarre Bible: St. John, pg. 202). How can Christ’s humiliating death on the cross and his abandonment by his closest followers give honor to God and reveal his splendor and power? How can the cross be Christ’s supreme glory? First, it reveals a love without limits, a love that does not say, “I will go this far and no farther.” Christ’s words, “Father, forgive them,” bear witness to a love that is stronger than sin. The Resurrection, which follows the cross, testifies to a love that is stronger than death itself. Second, the cross is the fulfillment of Christ’s mission. His obedience to the Father, even to death, redeems all of mankind. Have I embraced the cross in my own life as the one way to follow Christ? Embracing the cross is the only sure path to love Christ and glorify the Father.

3. Jesus Continues to Trust in Me: Throughout this Gospel passage, Christ’s words ring with unshakeable confidence. Even though he will die, abandoned by his disciples, in agony and humiliating failure, Christ continues to trust. He trusts both in his Father and in those very disciples who will soon desert him. Our Lord’s trust in us as his followers must inspire within us similar unwavering confidence in our mission to save souls, to bring others to Christ, and to transform society itself. By ourselves, we can achieve nothing. But we have the assurance of Christ’s prayers and the promise of his Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will speak in the hearts of all those who Christ calls to bring closer to him. Let us pray often to our great advocate: “Holy Spirit, inspire in me what I should think, what I should say, and what I should leave unsaid, so that I may achieve the good of all my brothers and sisters, fulfill my mission, and make Christ’s kingdom triumph.”

Reflection SG.

Jesus has finished speaking to his disciples with words full of encouragement great promises. Now he enters into his passion by praying for his disciples and for all of us who have come to believe in him. There is a nice suggestion that this solemn prayer to his Father is like the Preface of the Mass. With the Preface, we turn to prayer as we enter into the consecration. So, too, after his final teaching, Jesus enters into prayer, which he will continue in a different way in the Garden of Olives as he offers himself to the Father.

`In his prayer, Jesus makes an extraordinary statement referring to his disciples: “It is in them that I have been glorified.”  Judas has already gone out to betray him and in a short while Peter will deny him and all of them except John will desert him at the end. We may well then wonder how Jesus finds that he is glorified in them. Possibly, Jesus is taking all of history, past present and future into his prayer and so into his sacrifice.

   After the Resurrection and Pentecost and through the ages many will glorify God by a holy life or a martyr’s death.

Suy Niệm Tin Mừng John 16:29-33 Thứ Hai sau Tuần 7 Phục SInh

Trong mùa Phục Sinh này, chỉ có một chân lý rõ ràng và bền vững nhất đó là việc Chúa Kitô đã chinh phục thế giới, mặc cho tất cả các những vấn đề của thế giới, và sự hoảng loạn của con người. Chúng ta lo ngại khi chúng ta cảm thấy triệu chứng lão hóa, già nua, hoặc khi chúng ta ngã bệnh, vì những hạn chế sức khoẻ của chúng ta. Trong tất cả các "thánh giá" của cuộc sống nơi chúng ta, Chúa Kitô đã đến khuyến khích với chúng ta là: "Hãy can đảm!" Chúa Kitô biết rõ những khó khăn, gian khổ của chúng ta, nhưng Ngài mời gọi chúng ta phải dũng cảm để chiến đấu với những cám dỗ hàng ngày trong cuộc sống. Chúa Kitô hiện diện nơi chúng ta, Ngài không bao giờ bỏ rơi chúng ta. Thời điểm của Chúa thật hoàn hảo. Sẽ có những lúc khi chúng ta đã sẵn sàng, và những khó khăn, gian khổ chắc chắn sẽ đến, đến không phải để tiêu diệt chúng ta, nhưng đến để thanh tẩy chúng ta và cho chúng ta thấy vinh quang của Thiên Chúa.

Chúa Thánh Thần sẽ ban cho chúng ta sự  an bình mà thế gian không thể cho. Và chúng ta sẽ được nếm qua cái hương vị của thiên đàng với Thiên Chúa và với lòng tin tưởng là Đức Kitô thực sự là Con Thiên Chúa. Khi chúng ta cảm thấy lo âu khắc nghiệt hoặc lo lắng do các vấn đề riêng tư, cá nhân của chúng ta, chúng ta hãy tự hỏi: Lạy Chúa, con chắc chắn Chúa đã đem đến cho con những khó khăn này với một lý do. Xin cho con có lòng can đảm, để con có thể yên tâm rằng có những nguyên nhân đằng sau tất cả những sự việc này. Nhưng, con tin chắc rằng Chúa đã thực sự chinh phục được thế giới và xin Chúa sẽ chinh phục những khó khăn đang đến với chúng con!

Courage! I have overcome the world

Today, we may have the feeling that the world of faith in Christ is weakening. Many are symptoms against the fortitude and courage we would like to receive from a life integrally based on the Gospel. Consumerism, capitalism, sensualism and materialism values are very much in fashion and against any representation that may be in tune with the evangelical demands. Nevertheless, this combination of values and life ways do not provide either our own personal plenitude or our peace; in fact, it rather brings an intimate feeling of discomfort and uneasiness. Could not it be because of this circumstance that, today, we see lots of people in public sulking, lost in though and worrying about a rather obscure future, most probably because they have pledged it against the cost of a car, a flat or some holidays they simply cannot afford?  Jesus' words inspire confidence: «Courage! I have overcome the world» (Jn 16:33), that is, through his Passion, Death and Resurrection, He has attained the eternal life, life with nothing to stop it, a limitless life because it has overcome all limits and all difficulties.

We, soldiers of Christ, can overcome these difficulties too, as He did, in spite of the fact we may have to go throughout our life through many deaths and resurrections, never wanted but certainly assumed by the very Paschal Mystery of Christ. For “deaths” indeed are, losing a friend, parting with a beloved person, the failure of a project or the limitations our own human weakness impose upon us…

But «in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us» (Rm 8:37). Let us be witnesses to God's love, because He has, with us, «done great things» (Lk 1:49) and has given us his help to overcome all difficulties, even death, because Christ is sending us the Holy Spirit.

Suy Niệm Tin Mừng - Lễ Chúa Lên Trời

Qua sách Công Vụ Tông Đồ hôm nay Thánh đã mô tả sự ra đi của Chúa Giêsu qua việc Ngài được cất lên trời về với Chúa Cha trước mặt các môn đệ của Ngài. Trước khi Chúa Giêsu lên Trời, Chúa Giêsu đã bảo đảm với các môn đệ rằng họ sẽ được "Thánh tẩy trong Thánh Thần" để họ sẽ trở thành những "nhân chứng của Ngài ở Jerusalem, ở khắp xứ Giu-đê và cho đến tận cùng trái đất." Sau những năm tháng dài sống ở giữa thế gian này với nhân loại và con người chúng ta, giờ đây Ngài trở về với Cha của Ngài ở trên trời, để ban muôn ơn phúc lành của Ngài xuống trên con người chúng ta.

Trong Kinh Nguyện hằng Ngày với những thánh vịnh gia, "Thiên Chúa là vua của cả trái đất", chúng ta hãy mừng vui, tán tụng vương quyền cao cả của Thiên Chúa. Thánh Phaolô đã nhấn mạnh là những yếu tố làm chứng của đời sống Kitô hữu đích thực là cách đã nói: "Xin Thiên Chúa soi sáng con mắt tâm hồn của chúng ta để chúng ta có thể nhận biết những niềm hy vọng lớn lao mà khi chúng ta đã được gọi." Vì vậy, chứng lớn nhất của chúng ta là làm sao để cho có sự hiện diện của Chúa Giêsu ở giữa chúng ta và sự hiệp nhất với Thiên Chúa được thấy trong cuộc sống của chúng ta trong sự kết hợp trong hoà bình.

Trong Tin Mừng hôm nay, Chúa Giêsu đã khuyên nhũ các tông đồ của mình là hãy hiệp nhất, tin yêu vào Ngài và hãy thông hiệp với Chúa Thánh Thần của Ngài, và cuối cùng hứa và chúc lành cho các môn đệ của Ngài trước khi Ngài từ giã về với Chúa Cha. Như Đức Giáo Hoàng Phanxicô đã nói, Chúa Giêsu lên trới về với Chúa Cha, " và từ đó Ngài sẽ tiếp tục cầu bầu cho chúng ta mỗi ngày, và mỗi lúc. Chúa Giêsus đứng ngay bên tay phải của Chúa Cha. Ngài đã ban cấp sự sống của Ngài cho sự cứu rỗi của chúng ta và vì vậy chúng ta hãy cùng cầu nguyện cho nhau."

Lạy Chúa, xin giúp chúng con sống đời sống Kitô hữu đích thực của chúng con và giúp chúng con có sự can đảm để biết triệt để làmg chứng nhân cho Chúa Kitô trong mọi nơi, mọi lúc và trong mọi trường hợp.

The Book of Acts describes Jesus’ ascent to the Father. Jesus assures his disciples that they will be “baptized with the Holy Spirit” so that they become his “witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and to the ends of the earth.” From being on the earth with human beings he is now with his Father in heaven, showering his choicest blessings on us.         As the psalmist prays, “God is king of all the earth”, let us also celebrate God’s universal kingship. St. Paul amplifies the witnessing element of the authentic Christian life by saying, “May God enlightens the eyes of our heart so that we may know the great hope to which we have been called.” Therefore, our greatest witness to the presence of Jesus in our midst is our unity with God seen in our living with one another in peace and harmo.

The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord: The Presence that Matters

            What a huge difference in the two partings of the Lord.  The first time He left His disciples was when He died on the cross.  They were stunned.  They were grief stricken.  Their hopes crashed.  Their faith waned.  They felt abandoned–for 48 to 72 hours.  Then He appeared to them in His resurrected body. Shortly after that He left them again.  He ascended into heaven.  This time the disciples did not grieve.  Their hope and faith was stronger than ever.  He left them to go to the Father so He and the Father could send them their Holy Spirit.  The Presence they needed remained.

             The Presence they needed, the Presence we need, is also the only presence that matters.  All of us want to lead lives that make a difference in the world.  The only way we can do this is to live in the Presence that Matters.  Sometimes we are so bogged down in the materialistic aspects of our society that we get tempted to join the lie that having possessions will make a difference in the world.  Therefore, we work hard not just to provide for others, but also to have the very best of as much stuff as possible.  How many families suffer from an abundance of things but an absence of the presence of one or both parents, and an absence of the Presence that Matter, the spiritual presence?  How many other families celebrate their love with far less material things but with a great spiritual presence?

             I was thinking about the sad life of t Bernie Madoff, the Ponzi scheme criminal who became a billionaire by stealing from those who trusted in him.  Aside from the criminal aspects of his actions, Madoff had already done serious damage to his family by making possessions the goal of his life.  I found it poignant that his mansions in New York City, Montauk Point, Long Island, and Florida as well as all the stuff he put into them did not bring his family joy.  They were just places of confined rage.  The presence his family needed was the presence of a man of truth and love, a man of God.  Madoff could not or would not provide that for his family.

             You and I have witnessed so many families who are bound together by love not by possessions.  These are the families that everyone here works hard to cultivate. You may be able to provide the best possessions for your families, you may not; but you are always able to provide that which your family needs, care, concern, and love that remains after the gifts are opened and stored and forgotten.

             The Church gives us saints as examples of how to live in the Presence that Matters.  Consider St. Therese of the Child Jesus, Therese or Theresa of Lisieux.  She was born Therese Martin, the fifth daughter of two very religious people, Louis and Zelie, who themselves would be canonized.  When Therese was four, her mother died of breast cancer.  The family remained devout.  On Christmas of 1886, when she was 13, Therese felt a deep complete conversion.  She was absolutely convinced that she had to give her life for Christ. 

             That next summer the French newspapers were full of the stories of a Henri Pranzini who had murdered two women and a child.  Pranzini represented all that was indecent in life. He showed no remorse for his actions. Theresa prayed fervently for his conversion. Then she read in the newspapers that just before his execution, Pranzini grabbed a crucifix and kissed it three times.  Theresa was convinced that prayers had saved him.  She wanted to devote herself to praying for others.  The next year her family made a pilgrimage to Rome and Therese met the Pope, Pope Leo XIII, and begged him to allow the Discalced Carmelite Nuns to relax the rule that no girl could enter the convent until she was 16.  The Swiss Guard carried her off, but eventually, she and the Lord won the battle and she was able to enter the convent in Lisieux. 

            Therese was only a Carmelite for nine years before her own death in 1897, but during that time, she was a powerhouse of prayer. She prayed for priests, many of whom she came to realize were not the spiritual men that the world needed them to be.  Her determination to care for the spiritual lives of priests has resulted in her being named the patroness of vocations.  Therese also prayed for the missions.  She was overwhelmed by the thought that millions would die without having the opportunity to learn about Jesus. She never left the convent, but she is also recognized as a patroness of foreign missions.  Therese’s life filled the world with the Presence that Matters.  She is called the Little Flower because her life and her prayers filled the world with the fragrance of God’s love. 

             Therese wrote about the “Little Way” of doing all things, even the smallest thing, for the glory of God.  Her autobiography, The Story of a Soul is one of the great spiritual works of the Church, so much so that in 1997 she was named a Doctor of the Church. 

            Sadly, Bernie Madoff’s life, at least to this point, does not matter. His presence has not changed the world for the better.  It has done the opposite.  However, Therese’s life does matter.  And so can your life.  And so can my life. Like Therese, we also can make a difference in the world.  We can fill the world with the Presence that Matters.  We can and we must unite the world to Jesus Christ through our own union to Jesus Christ.  This takes determination.  This takes courage.  This takes love.  We have to have the determination to do everything we can for the Lord.  We have to have the courage to be different from those people in the world who have no place for God in their lives.  We have to have the courage to be holy.  And we have to have a love of God that is so intense that the fire of that love inflames all we meet.

             There is no reason for us to look up into the sky.  We have the Presence we need.  Now we must go out into the world and provide others the Presence that Matters.

Đã bao giờ chúng ta tự hỏi là Chúa Giêsu  đã suy nghĩ những gì trong tâm trí của Ngài khi Ngài đã bỏ ra rất nhiều giờ để cầu nguyện trong đêm trên sườn đồi ? Với bản chất Con người cũng như bản chất Thiên Chúa, Ngài đã phải lo lắng cho những người theo Ngài vì họ quá ngây ngô, quá chậm hiểu Ngài là ai, và tại sao Ngài đã đến. Ngay cả sau khi Ngài đã sống lại, chúng ta biết Ngài rất quan tâm lo sợ khi phải để họ ở lại một mình cho đến khi Chúa Thánh Thần đến.

                Trong Tin Mừng hôm nay, chúng ta thấy Chúa Giêsu đã tuân đổ tình yêu của Ngài cho họ và cho những người sẽ đến sau như chúng ta . Ngài cầu nguyện cho họ có được sức mạnh và lòng dũng cảm. Chúa rất quan tâm lo ngại nhất là việc họ vẫn chưa biết mối quan hệ của Ngài với Đức Chúa Cha, hoặc họ chưa hiểu là làm thế nào mà  Thiên Chúa Ba Ngôi trong cùng một Thiên Chúa.  Ngài rất mong muốn họ có thể hiểu được sự sôi động, cuộc sống hạnh phúc của thiên đàng. Và vì thế Ngài cầu nguyện xin đức tin cho họ và cho tất cả những ai sẽ nghe Lời Ngài, cũng như Ngài cầu nguyện cho sự hiệp nhất ràng buộc giữa Giáo Hội trần thế với Giáo Hội trên thiên đàng.

                Tất cả chúng ta hôm nay đang sống trong một Giáo Hội đang bị bao vây tứ phía;  từ sự thiếu lòng tin, từ những giận dữ  vì tội lỗi, vì Giáo Hội không hoàn hảo,  vì lo sợ rằng Chúa Thánh Thần đã bỏ rơi chúng ta;  Chúng ta cần phải đọc kỹ Phúc Âm hôm nay, và toàn bộ bài giảng trước khi chia tay của Chúa Giêsu trong đêm trước khi chịu khổ hình . Như các tông đồ lúc đó, và sau đó họ tập hợp cầu nguyện với Đức Maria trong nhà Tiệc Ly, chúng ta cần phải tin tưởng vào sức mạnh và lời hứa của Chúa Giêsu đã hứa với các môn đệ của Ngài.

                Trong ngày Chúa  Nhật cuối cùng  trước Lễ Hiện Xuống, chúng ta hãy xin cho chúng ta có thể có được can đảm bắt chước theo gương của thánh Têphanô , và có tầm nhìn của Thánh Gioan trong sách Khải Huyền, và cuối cùng là cái nhìn tuyệt vời của Chúa Giêsu về một thế giới hòa bình sống trong sự hiệp nhất và yêu thương. Chúng ta hãy cầu xin Chúa cho ngày hôm nay với lời cầu nguyện của Chúa Giêsu cho sự hiệp nhất trong hội thánh, trong các trong xứ đạo, và trong Giáo Hội phổ quát. Chúng ta hãy cầu xin Thiên Chúa cho chúng ta có được đức tin mạnh mẽ hơn và tình yêu mạnh dạn và lòng can đảm mạnh mẽ hơn trong việc làm chứng nhân cho Chúa sống lại và lên trời.

Did you ever wonder what thoughts went through Jesus' mind as He spent long hours in prayer on a mountain side in the darkness? Being human as well as divine, He must have worried that His followers were so slow to understand who He was, and why He had come. Even after His resurrection, we know He was very concerned about leaving them alone until the Holy Spirit came. He knew that this idea of founding a Church was a risky venture. Would it survive?

                In today's Gospel, we hear Jesus pour out His love for them and for those of us who would come later. He prayed for their strengthening and their courage. He is very concerned that as yet, they still do not know His relationship with the Father, or how the Persons of the Trinity meld into one God. He so wishes that they could understand the vibrant, joyful life of heaven. And so He prays for faith for them and for all who will hear the Word, as well as for that unity that will bind the Church on earth to the Church in heaven.

                For all of us today who live in a Church under siege--from unbelief; from anger at a sinful, imperfect Church; from fears that the Holy Spirit has abandoned us--we need to carefully read this Gospel and the whole farewell sermon of Jesus that night before His Passion. As the apostles then, and later gathered in prayer with Mary in the Upper Room, we need to trust in the power and promise of Jesus to His followers.   

                As there were martyrs soon after Pentecost, like Stephen (in the first reading), so there are thousands since then who have "washed their robes so as to have a right to the tree of life." Our own century has produced more martyrs for the faith than all the preceding centuries of Christianity put together. While none of our readers will ever be stoned to death, many Catholics feel spiritually stoned from parish closings, and from lack of enough priests to live in our midst as consoling ministers of the Word and the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist. We feel under attack from an indifferent, secular society.
