REFLECTION SG 2017
It happened to the people of Israel in Moses’ time. It happened to the leaders of Israel in Jesus’ time: it keeps on happening in today’s world too; when people stop believing in God, that start to believe in anything at all, idols, superstitions, ideas, theories, self-proclaimed prophets and so on.
Jesus’ problem with the authorities of His day was simply that they did not believe, they did not or could not “read” and understand those very scriptures on which they placed such importance. Instead, they had added all sorts of detailed rules and interpretations which effectively obscured for them the message of God’s word. “Search the Scriptures”, Jesus told them, because these inspired writings testify to who He is.
In this time of Lent, we receive the same invitation to “search the Scriptures”. The object is not ‘information’ or ‘answers’, or proofs for some debate or religious argument of theory.  It's faith invitation, namely to learn how to “read” the divine word, just as we also need to “read” God’s presence, His purpose and His directing in the events of our times, in the events of our own personal lives of prayer and work and family, and in the life and worship of our Christian community.
There will always be people claiming to have new ideas about God and about Jesus, new revelations, even new devotions. What is their authority for these? Our faith is in Jesus and the Father’s authority that He’s shown us. Let us pray for the light and grace to be His faithful followers, able to discern His presence and action.

Ex. 32:7-14; Jn. 5:31-47
Politicians have a bad name today. This is a pity because politics are an essential part of life. When, for example, Mum and Dad bargain with little son or daughter and get him or her to do another fifteen minutes of home work before running to the computer, they are engaging in the necessary art of family politics. In today’s first reading we find Moses trying his hand at politics too.
Moses was trying to be a loyal servant of God and of his fellow Israelites. He also reminded Yahweh of his promises to his people.
Moses, great and holy as he was, was a man of the Old Testament. He had not seen the overwhelming goodness of God manifested in Christ. When begging God to be faithful to his people he didn’t realize how open the door was on which he was pushing. Yahweh was only too glad to help his people. But the people had to be ready to accept his goodness. They were the ones who had to change. Moses’ prayer may have helped to bring about that change. He was in solidarity with his people. His goodness and desire became theirs so that they were changed by the mercy of God.
During Lent, when we pray for “sinners” (not excluding ourselves) our prayers may be seen by God as a change of heart on the part of the whole human race and he will act accordingly. That is, he will act lovingly. Father, forgive us for we know not what we are doing.

REFLECTION
In today's Gospel Jesus is disturbed because the leaders of the Jewish people refuse to believe that he comes from God. He chides them because they could not see God at work in his miracles and teaching.  Unfortunately they could not read the signs of the times.
What does this mean, "to read the signs of the times? " It means to look at a secular event, a happening in our world, and through faith to see in it the meaning God puts into it. For instance, the crucifixion of Jesus was a secular event. It happened on a hill outside of Jerusalem. It was decreed by the civil authority, carried out by the police force of the state. But we look at this secular event and our faith sees there the meaning that God put into it, the Son of God suffering and dying to bring about our eternal redemption.
Why did the leaders of Israel not see in Jesus' miracles and preaching the meaning God put in them? Because they knew that if they did, they would have to give up their positions of power and wealth and live by Jesus' values. So they refused to read the signs of the times, to see God at work in the life of Jesus.
It is this same mentality that blocks us from finding God's meaning in the events of our lives. We do not want to give up what we cling to. Therefore we blind ourselves so as not to learn what it is he wants of us. Let us pray for openness to the Lord and to finding his will for us in the events of our lives. "Lord Jesus, fill me with your Holy Spirit that I may listen to your word attentively and obey it joyfully."

Reflection:
Jesus always speaks about doing the work of the Father. One of the work of the Father is to raise the dead to life, work that Jesus does as well. "The Son gives life to anyone he chooses," Christ says. He will raise us all from death on the last day; but he can also raise us from death during our lifetime. Whenever we sin, we are dead; we have no life inside us. Nonetheless, Christ came to give us life. And how does he do this? Jesus says in this Gospel that the dead who hear the voice of the Son of God will live. We hear his voice whenever the Word of God is proclaimed. Christ invites us to listen to it so we will have life. We truly listen by keeping his Word; and this is what raises us from death.

mY REFLECTION Wednesday 4th Lent
Is. 49:8-15;; Jn. 5:17-3
In today’s gospel passage provides the answers to two key questions.
Firstly, what gives Jesus the right to ‘work’ on the Sabbath by healing the sick?
Secondly, what gives Jesus the right to call God his Father, and in doing so, make himself equal with God.
To the first question, gospel passage states that there are two activities that God does not cease to do even on the Sabbath “giving life” and of “judgement”.Therefore, Jesus has the right to ‘work’ on the Sabbath because his Father does not cease to do the same.It is a right based on Jesus’ special relationship with the Father. His actions take place at the same time as those of his Father in “giving life” and in “judging”.If this is true, does not it mean that Jesus too is God?
Do Christians therefore believe in two Gods?
In response to this, gospel passage stresses the divinity of Jesus and the oneness of God.The relationship between the Father and the Son is one of mutual knowledge and love. The Father opens Himself fully in love to His Son, and hands over his works to the Son.The Father communicates His divine life to the Son without losing anything of the richness of His own divine life.
Therefore, the Son is to be given the same honor as the Father.Through Jesus the Father reveals His intimate love for his people, a love that is likened to the love of a mother for her child. And even if a mother forgets her baby, God never forgets His people.
Let’s us ask our Lord Jesus to help us make us understand that his judgment is that all may live in his love. And let’s give thanks to God for His faithfulness.
